By

At +.827 WPA, Raul Ibanez just had the fifth biggest playoff game in baseball history. He saw three pitches. The game recap will be up … eventually.

  1. Winter says:

    RAAAAUUUUUL!

  2. Get Phelps Up says:

The Yankees are so winning the World Series this year.

  3. JFH says:

    Raul Ibanez….True Yankee.

  4. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Great pitching and Raul.

    What else do they need?

  5. Cy Pettitte says:

    Raul….my god.

  6. The Real Greg says:

I don’t care if Saunders is a lefty. START HIM TOMORROW

  7. DT says:

.197/.246/.246 vesus lefties this year. NO Homeruns. And he hits his first one off Matsuz in the play offs. HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

  8. Psy says:

    RAhhhh Ouullllll

  9. forensic says:

Ibanez says screw you Girardi for benching me!!!

That went from the most boring game ever to an incredible game.

If only there weren’t so many bad things still there, but at least it’s better to have those in a win than a loss.

  10. BJ says:

    My sweet dick, it’s magic!

  11. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

Oh my god I got home just in time to see it RAUL MOTHER FUCKIN IBANEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Nice Scheister of Shrooms says:

Your handle went from funny to annoying to EPIC throughout the season. Never change it. Ever.

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Ha, I was wondering what you decided to do, and whether you were missing this incredible shit with your non-baseball friends.

  12. OxFredEagle says:

Woke up in bed, opened up game cast on my phone. Caught it just going into mid 12th, and saw blip about Raul hitting ninth inning hr. Then he’s at bat, and before pitch even registers online, the score updates to 3-2. Seriously considered that I might be dreaming…

  13. Jim Ross says:

I want to have your baby, Raul! FYI, I’m a dude.

  14. DM says:

Ibanez is good and all — but I wish he was better in the clutch.

  15. Nice Scheister of Shrooms says:

Retire his number. He shouldn’t start, ever. He should close all the games, with his bat. Beyond clutch. ALL his homers look the same, beautiful. I said the Yanks would plate the last run, and it happened. Awesome victory!!

  16. Dan says:

See the game thread pre start where I called for ibanez to dh…ride the hot hand

  17. Eddard reboot v.1.0 says:

There’s something special about this team. Martin in Game 1, Raul in Game 3, both off Jim Johnson. Girardi making all the right moves, outmanaging Buck. Who would have thought that he would PH for A-Rod? Great move. Phil tomorrow for the series win. Raul should be DHing, A-Rod plays 3rd only because it’s a LHP.

  18. TheSaint says:

    Raul Ibanez=TRUE YANKEE

  19. Jerome S. says:

I remember at the beginning of the season, thinking how useless Ibanez was.
    Now… tears…

  20. Get Phelps Up says:

Although in our hearts we all knew that Johnny Damon would have hit the walkoff HR in the 9th inning and spared us extras.

  21. Eddard says:

If Detroit finishes this off it just makes tomorrow’s game 4 all that more important. Our chances vs Detroit are severely diminished if they can throw Verlander in Game 1, Fister in Game 2 and we have to throw Pettitte in Game 1, Phelps in Game 2. Our rotation matches up with theirs starter for starter but only if we can line it up.

  22. Mike says:

There is one person I”m mad at a right now, and that’s myself. Why did I sell my tickets to this game!!!!!! GRRRRRRRR.

  23. Alkaline says:

Raul has just been silly. I love me some Voldemort.

  24. The Real Greg says:

You have to admit. Girardi nedded balls to make that move.

  25. Eddard says:

Ichiro is Johnny Damon, Raul is Hideki. It just has that feel of 2009. If we can win tomorrow and set our rotation for the ALCS I like our chances against Oakland or Detroit. But we have to win tomorrow.

    • hogsmog says:

Good thing the Yanks have all the ingredients they need to win this year, which are apparently two aging lefty outfielder/DHs.

  26. Rek4gehrig says:

    Rah ooooolllllll

  27. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

True Yankee? Serious question. Dude’s hit some HUGE homers for us.

  28. Coolerking101 says:

Sadly this is the closest A-Rod comes to being clutch!

Respect to Girardi for sitting him down.

    • Jim Is Bored says:

A-Rod had his clutch moments in 2009. He knows what it feels like, albeit only rarely.

    • Laz says:

      Forget 2009?

      • Coolerking101 says:

Nope I just remember the vast majority of his Yankee career.

        • DT says:

Other than 2009, did you forget when he carried a mediocre team to the play offs in 2007? his 1.000+ OPS in the 2004 play offs before the entire team choked? his 2005 MVP year? Yeah he has done nothing or the team in his career.

        • YanksFanInBeantown says:

So what you’re saying is that you don’t forget 2009.

You know, the year he almost single-handedly carried us to a World Series Championship

          • Joe Girardis Braces says:

What happens with a-rod from here, he said all the right things after the game but u know hes hurt by this, I know most people hate him but this has to be a personal low for him and a team high for him all in the same night. U know hes mad at girardi, does he start hitting from here or is he mentally done

  29. Edmond says:

Thank you joe for having the guts to put Raul in there! Thank you! Thank you!!!!!

    • Nice Scheister of Shrooms says:

All of this. My opinion of Joe has changed after tonight. That took man sized balls I didn’t know Girardi had.

  30. Bartolo's Colon says:

i was one of the biggest ibanez haters ever during the season. I apologize to all yankee fans for that. i still don’t want to see him in the outfield, but man dude can hit when it counts.

cano, arod, grandy, swish, and tex are pressing. they all blow right now, really hoping this wakes them up so they go back to their normal approaches

  31. mlbtv stranded says:

    A rod secretly pissed?

    • GT Yankee says:

I think and hope A-Rod has matured into a team player. He vaulted his hands above his head when it happened. Perhaps he was even a bit relieved. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

      • mlbtv stranded says:

He can be happy for Raul and the team win, and at the same time, the fiery competitor in him may feel upstaged.

Having the spotlight shine on his short-comings is nothing new, so I’m hoping it just shakes things up a bit in a positive way, and unleashes the player we need him to be. (assuming he’s healthy)

    • DT says:

He seemed pretty happy in the dug out.

  32. ANSKY says:

Funniest comment came from Smoltz when they zoomed to the dugout celebration:
“Look at CC. He’s thinking he’s guaranteed another start.”

Yeah in Game 1 of the ALCS…dick.

  33. Ethan says:

    Amazing. Absolutely amazing!

  34. thenamestsam says:

So fucking cool. Seriously, so fucking cool.

  35. ItWasaThing says:

Damn, it’s too bad those home runs didn’t count since you can’t hit them in the postseason.

  36. BigBlueAL says:

Jim Johnson is the new Joe Nathan.

  37. Rey22 says:

    RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Holy.Fucking.Shit.

  38. CountryClub says:

    1. Let’s not forget how good Kuroda was tonight.

    2. Cross your fingers for Jeter’s foot. Broken bone would be devastating.

  39. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

Favorite part about this: nobody in the dugout looked happier than Alex. Dude knows he’s struggling, and knows the team is more important than him.

    • Eddard says:

Yeah, he looked lost against Johnson so I’m sure he understands. Alex needs to be ready to go tomorrow. LHP with a chance to win the series. Jeter might be down so everyone needs to step up, including Alex.

    • TomH says:

Of course he’s happy about the result.

The thing is that Ibanez is old too. I don’t buy this crap about ARod being finished. He busted a hand. We saw him during the season hit some real monster shots. People his age, great hitters have had considerable success. The hand will heal over the winter, and the hand is the simplest explanation for what’s happened to him this month: therefore the explanation of choice. It will affect both bat speed and power–and timing and confidence too.

And yet Girardi did make the right move to pinch hit for him, embarrassing as it must have been for Alex.

The violence of some of these insults during the game thread are appalling. They can only come from people who haven’t lived long enough to know how difficult life is.

  40. Get Phelps Up says:

Also, let’s not forget that awesome start by Kuroda. Dude was absolute money tonight.

  41. CUYanks says:

All Hail Joe! All Hail Joe! All Hail Joe! Raul!!!!!

    That is all.

  42. BigBlueAL says:

Saunders starting Game 4. Yankees offense has a chance to get healthy tomorrow.

    • forensic says:

Based on history I’d rather they face Tillman, but hopefully it’ll work out well. Need to sit Grandy or Swish and play Ibanez and Ichiro in the OF (assuming Jeter has to DH).

  43. goterpsgo says:

All my 0′s-rooting friends are booing me but what can they say?!?! This year leading after 9 innings, 0′s are now 76 AND ONE!!!!! :D

  44. Cy Pettitte says:

Best part about this series so far has definitely been beating the O’s where they’re strongest. So sick of hearing about their 7whatever-0 record when winning after 7 and their extra inning games winning streak.

    • Eddard says:

Yes! And it’s our bullpen that got the job done tonight. All 3 games have really came down to the Os pen. They held in Game 2, blew it in Games 1 and 3. The starters for both teams have been phenomenal. Unbelievable baseball these past 3 games.

  45. Pete says:

Any link to the Sterling call yet?

  46. Total Dominication says:

I’ve never experienced a moment quite like that walkoff blast. The closes I can remember is A-rod’s 16th inning homer, but this was the playoffs. I was literally jumping up and down and hugging people. All Hail Lord Voldemort!!!!!!!!!

  47. Get Phelps Up says:

Although O’s fans can take solace in the fact that Johnson lowered his postseason ERA in the last 2 games from 135.00 to a much more manageable 13.50.

  48. DM says:

Mike, if we release Ibanez today then sign either Damon, Matsui, Vlad, Branyan, Cust to replace his bat — would any of them be eligible for the post-season roster?

  49. Ethan says:

anyone just see that Oak-Det play by Drew? Man what a dumb play!

  50. Raul is so cool says:

High on this game! So good raaaaauuuuullll!!!!

  51. mustang says:

I THINK THEY SHOULD DFA RAUL IBANEZ RIGHT NOW OF HIS SPRING TRAINING NUMBERS!!!

  52. Stratman9652 says:

Does anyone else notice the funny whiplash like thing Raul has going on at the end of a home run swing? The way his head and shoulders snap back is really odd looking,

  53. DT says:

Raul pulling some of that 2009 ARod shit tonight.

  54. wilk says:

    Game 4 Lineup
    Jeter SS
    Suzuki LF
    Cano 2B
    Teixeira 1B
    Swisher RF
Ibanez DH- I DON’T CARE IF SAUNDERS IS A LEFTY
    Rodriguez 3B
    Martin C
Granderson CF- not coming anywhere near the ball

  55. mustang says:

Anyone know where pistol Pete is at?

    LOL

  56. I am not the droids you're looking for says:

    Homers ftw. No, seriously.

    Homers.

    For. The. Mother. Fucking. Win.

  57. Mike c says:

    yankee magic never gets old

  58. Bob Buttons the Cat says:

Random thought: 2 of the top 4 +WPA in post season history belong to the very same team in the very same game.

Freese and Berkman in WS game 6 last year.

  59. youngmanalex says:

question, (as usual). looking into next year, I think AROD is done. Done being the #3#4, he is just done, today’s benching was a testament to that.. do you guys agree?

    • youngmanalex says:

basically what im saying is that, I think he’s lost his leash as being a middle of the line up threat. as much as cashman was pushing it.

      • Eddard says:

I’d probably give him one more game tomorrow vs the LHP to show something before I move him down. If he does nothing again I’d move him down to 6th. Bump Cano up to 3, Teix and Swish 4 and 5. The thing is, nobody outside of Jeter, Martin and Raul are swinging the bat that well. Pick your poison.

        • Deep Thoughts says:

Mark Shapiro and the Cleveland front office must be kicking themselves for jumping the gun and hiring Tito when they did, thus missing out on all the awesome managerial talent posting on RAB tonight.

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

Yes. I’m a huge A-Rod fan, he WAS great. Now when it comes to his peers he is simply very good. When I say that I think he’s done as a middle of the order hitter I don’t mean that I think he’s ‘done’ as a baseball player. Alex still has very good on base skills when at 100% as well as an above average glove defensively, with great baserunning awareness and some power (20-25 hrs if healthy). I think he would be an ideal 2 or 6 hitter personally.

  60. JRod says:

That was a Reggie level performance.

  61. pistol pete says:

Just listened to ARod and he was extremely gracious, couldn’t have handled it better.

  62. asdf says:

    He-who-shall-not-be-Arod

  63. Dino says:

Why is the media acting like Girardi pinch hit for the 2007 version of Alex Rodriguez?

  64. Joe F says:

I was there section 203! Nuts. I was on tv!

    • Betty Lizard says:

Wow, Joe F! I’m happy you were there! Perhaps you magically tipped the walk off scales in the Yankees’ favor . . . .

  65. Mike says:

Probably been mentioned somewhere, but Saunders is starting tomorrow. I wonder why no Chris Tillman.

    • forensic says:

I would’ve started Saunders too. He’s been pitching regularly, helped them through Texas, is a lefty sinkballer in YS, and though he has bad numbers against the Yankees, Tillman has absolutely horrid numbers against them. Even this year he struggled against them, despite seemingly improving overall.

  66. Rocky Road Redemption says:

For the first home run I jumped in the air, pumped my fist, and screamed very loudly.

During the second home run my TV was on mute and I looked up and seriously considered for a moment whether or not the HR was a replay and I just remembered the spot it landed wrong. Then I took off the mute and started yelling.

The Mysterious Force is good-very good. Mystique and Aura are better.

  67. nick says:

Ibanez has clinched his invitation to future old-timer’s days in my book. :-)

  68. King George says:

Guys…lost in all this is what a game Hiroki pitched. Dude pitched a hell of a game. 2 ER in 8 IP.

  69. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Hey guys, this win doesn’t count. You can’t win with home runs in the playoffs.

  70. Hummingbird S. says:

I gotta give credit when credit is due. Girardi PH for A-Rod, can’t say I expected that one, but it was absolutely the right thing to do. GREAT MOVE Joe.

    btw, RAAAAUUUUUL!

  71. Mike says:

Some Yankee writer tweeted that the media would have screamed and blamed this loss on Girardi had Ibanez get out in the 9th inning

I’m sorry I just don’t by that at all. I can’t guarantee they wouldn’t have, and of course it’s something we won’t know, but do you expect A-Rod, who has like 1 HR in his last 60 AB overall and 0 HR in his last 65 postseason AB, would have done the same thing?

Even if Ibanez had struck out, I’d call that an equal production of A-Rod.

  72. bill says:

If you followed that link from axisa, you would see that a-rod is in the top 50 WPA swings 3 times. Interesting.

  73. 27 rings says:

    Play Gardner over Granderson.

  74. Mike says:

Hoping for an A’s comeback in the bottom of the 9th.

  75. Dela G says:

Even Reggie Jackson has to think that was an epic performance

  76. Chris in NC says:

You guys should already know this… Mystique and Aura only start to dance after 11.

    They are professionals, ya know.

  77. forensic says:

If I may add, Lets go A’s!

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

I was about to ask, is anybody watching this? Tying run just scored!!

      • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

        This is awesome.

If they win this, Verlander is used for Game 5, plus I have tickets to the ALCS in Oakland and I’m hoping to be able to watch the Yankees there.

        • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

I hate picking match ups, because regardless of who the Yankees play we still have to execute, but just cause you’ve got possible tickets I hope the A’s win.

  78. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

  79. Get Phelps Up says:

    Go A’s!

  80. anon says:

A’s tie it up at 3 in the 9th!

  81. Ethan says:

Anyone watching the A’s game? Crazy day in baseball!

  82. I Collect Brett Gardner Cards says:

    mr. smith!
    what a night!

  83. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

Horrid AB there..hopefully Pennington can end this before the Daily Show re-airs.

  84. forensic says:

Well Derek Norris, that sure was pitiful.

  85. Get Phelps Up says:

    Wow…generous strike call there.

  86. anon says:

    A’S WINNN!!!!

  87. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Yes!!!!! Not as awesome as the Yanks game, but what a night of baseball.

  88. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Way to atone for your error, Coco.

    LoLverde.

  89. Ethan says:

    What a day for baseball!

  90. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:

Terrible Defense there. I’m happy though I want these guys to play as many games as possible.

  91. Eddard says:

What a night for us. The Amazin As have forced a Game 5! Verlander cannot pitch Game 1 of the ALCS!

  92. dkidd says:

    what a game

who would want to play the Al’s right now?

  93. Get Phelps Up says:

The Yankees-A’s ALCS is gonna be fun.

    • forensic says:

I have concerns about facing either team. I’m just thrilled that no matter what they’re both going to have to use their game 1 starters again.

  94. anon says:

Nice job CoCo atoning for your FB error earlier in the series. Glad to see the Tigers will waste Verlander in game 5 tomorrow prior to the ALCS

  95. I Collect Brett Gardner Cards says:

have a great start tomorrow Justin.
    :)

  96. forensic says:

Yeah A’s! Thank you for forcing Verlander to pitch again. Nicely played Garcia!

Now the Yanks need to keep CC off the mound on Friday!

  97. Mike says:

Do you guys realize what this A’s win does to the Tigers if in fact the Tigers end up winning the 5th game?

It means Justin Verlander is only going to be pitching ONE game in the ALCS (and that would be Game 4). He has never pitched on 3 games rest, ever, and Leyland still refuses to the day to do it.

Imagine facing Verlander ONCE in a 7 game series.

Whoever wins this series betweeen Yankees and O”s just caught a HUGE break if the Tigers in fact win game 5.

  98. Joe F says:

So fucking awesome. I met Michael Kay, Merideth, and Bald Vinny.

  99. forensic says:

As an aside, could you imagine a booth of Ernie Johnson and buck Martinez? Even separate their voices almost buzz kill some of the wins/celebrations tonight. Imagine if they were doing the same game…

  100. Eddard says:

I have been critical of Bud for this horrible scheduling fiasco but this really has been a great postseason thus far. Os-Yanks is so close. The other 3 series are too. Two Game 5s tomorrow. Gonna be another great day of baseball.

  101. Tonight may have been more remarkable than Sept. 28, 2011.

    I am not kidding.

  102. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Lost amidst all of the truly epic whining, from regulars, optimists, and trolls alike, was this gem by Big Member:

    http://riveraveblues.com/2012/.....nt-4937571

…BTW, that game thread was horrible. I DEFINITELY made the right decision to avoid game threads in the playoffs (at least until the game ends). Seriously, almost every single person in that thread was ludicrously over the top with the criticism-before the game was over!

I’m not saying I wouldn’t be as bad if I was on the thread, but honestly that’s because it’s hard to be positive with both the team playing badly AND everybody on here crying for the dismemberment of various players (yes, I’m exaggerating).

If you guys find yourself getting too emotionally negative, get up and watch the game away from any sports blogs. Trust me, it makes a HUGE difference. That’s not to say it isn’t depressing, but at least you don’t need to hear a gazillion different people saying it all the time.

    • I Collect Brett Gardner Cards says:

      Yep.
I avoid the game threads outside of a post game hurrah.
Not sure how many of those peeps have hit puberty yet the way some of them act.

no guys, a strikeout in the 5th is NEVER the end of the world.
      :)

  103. anon says:

Did the reporter on Jim Leyland’s post game press conf just ask him to comment on Valverde getting “raped”?

  104. David N says:

So what dance was Valverde doing tonight?
