Granderson hit by pitch in right arm in Extended Spring Training game

Austin homers, Rondon rocked in Trenton loss
Game 30: End of the Homestand

Via Mike Fitzpatrick: Curtis Granderson is fine after being hit by a pitch in the right arm during an Extended Spring Training game yesterday. It’s the same arm he had broken by an errant J.A. Happ pitch during Spring Training. “It was going to happen one of these days,” he said afterwards.

Granderson, 32, has been playing in ExST games since Wednesday, and Fitzpatrick says he has spent time in all three outfield positions. The Yankees insist he will return as the center fielder, so it will be interesting to see how the outfield shakes out once he returns. I don’t think anyone expected Vernon Wells to hit as well as he has, which has complicated things for the time being. We can worry about the outfield alignment when Curtis is actually ready to rejoin the team, I guess.

    That was a terrifying headline.

  • BigDavey88

Saw the link on twitter, no explanation of the result of the pitch, had a heart attack.

You had me for a few seconds Mike.

As a righty in a lineup in need of righty power, Wells has to play as long as he’s hitting. DH and four-man rotation OF, with maybe one of the other three sitting when there’s a lefty on the mound.

  • Pseudoyanks

He needs to wear Big Papi armor from now on.

    • Mattinglyfan03

Ortiz’s battle armor covers the elbow. Grandy Man was hit (in spring training) further down on the forearm. If he wore a piece over that part of the arm, it would interfere with his swing.

Jeez. I was about ready to throw something when I saw the headline. Glad he’s alright.

As for the outfield situation…this is a good problem to have. If Wells keeps hitting and makes things complicated, that’s good. As of right now, I probably play Wells/Grandy/Gardner, with Ichiro becoming the 4th OF. The only issue I see here is that neither Wells or Gardner is really a right fielder. Wells only has 25 career games in RF and Gardner has none. I guess there could be some DH swapping with Wells DHing against lefties and Ichiro in the OF. That solves some of the problem.

I never really paid attention to Wells’ arm, you guys think he could fake RF enough? If he keeps hitting, they can’t afford to take his bat out of the lineup.

  • trr

I’m OK with a 4 man rotation in the OF and DH. Gardner has the skill set to adjust to RF, and. I think Wells would be passable. Need his RH bat!

    • RetroRob

It wouldn’t make sense to put Gardner in RF. If they are going to move him off CF when Granderson returns, they might as well put him in the larger LF at Yankee Stadium. RF is pretty forgiving. It helps turn fly balls in HRs and it can help cover up weaker-armed OFers who have less distance to throw from.

Wells was once a good defensive OFer. He still seems good out there. I would put him in RF on days when Ichiro is out.

      • trr

A strong arm RF can also stop runners advancing 1st to 3rd. As mentioned this a good problem, and will sort itself out in time.

  • JonS

With the team treading water pretty well right now, why not let him spend a week or two more in ExtST to play and get comfortable with the other positions? It will make the team that much stronger when he returns. I’m glad they are playing him in all 3 positions.

    • The Real Me

With the way this team has been compiling injuries and DL time this season, I’d say bring him up now before there’s a chance for something else to happen.

My vote is to keep Gardner in center and move Granderson to left or right. The fans get a vote, right?

    • trr

      We wish!

      • Havok9120

        No. No we don’t.

It’d be disastrous for everyone involved.

  • Pat D

I saw the headline but didn’t absorb the word “extended” and thought the site had gone back to February or something.

And, yes, kind of a mini heart attack.

  • Dinner with Gabe Paul

    I enjoyed the Cashman quote….

  • Cool Lester Smooth

Wells shifts to RF and Ichiro, with his sub-.300 wOBA, becomes the 4th OF when Grandy comes back.

    Seems pretty simple to me.

Who hit him? WHO HIT HIM!? No ONE GOT THE MEMO NOT TO HIT HIM?!
