Update: Cashman confirms plan is to have Teixeira & Youkilis back with big league team on Friday

1:03pm: Brian Cashman told Josh Norris the plan is to indeed have both Teixeira and Youkilis back with the big league team on Friday. Both have to make it through tomorrow’s game fine first, obviously.

12:39pm: In their first minor league rehab games with Double-A Trenton, Mark Teixeira (wrist) and Kevin Youkilis (back) both went 0-for-2 with a walk in a planned seven innings of play. Teixeira struck out swinging and popped up to the shortstop in his two at-bats, and his only defensive plays at first base involved receiving throws from other infielders. Youkilis popped up to the first baseman in foul territory and was robbed of a base hit on a nice play by the right fielder, fielding just one ball — a soft line drive — at third base.

Both Teixeira and Youkilis will play for the Thunder again tomorrow night, and I assume they’ll play a full nine innings. The official word from the team is that both will be re-evaluated after that game, but there have been hints both could be activated off the DL in time for Friday’s game against the Red Sox.

Tex clearly in mid season form.

  2. Eddard says:

Having both in the lineup will add length to the lineup, power and better options vs LHP. I’d keep Adams and Overbay on the roster for depth. I’m sure it’ll be Boesch that goes but it should be Ichiro. Option down Nuno as Andy will come off the DL soon. That will buy more time to think what to do with Adams/Overbay.

    • Eddard says:

And when Andy returns I’d option down Nova. We already have Warren as a long man. Nova should be in AAA refining his pitching. That will buy even more time to figure out what to do.

    • The Real Me says:

Not that it makes much difference, but Nova should probably go down to try to work things out before Nuno. And Ichiro still offers elite (or well above average) defense and speed (although he hasn’t used it much), 2 things that Boesch doesn’t, so at least the Yankee leadership can use that as the reason for sending Boesch down. That and the fact that they Boesch can still be sent down, while Ichiro would have to be released. Something I’m sure they don’t want to do only 2 months into a 2 year contract.

      • jsbrendog says:

sadly they have to send boesch down cause he is the only one they really can who has an option that isn’t a pitcher or useful (adams)

and, while i agree with you about ichiro speed means nothing if you can’t get on base. god i hope he at least regresses to league average.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

I’d be very surprised if they went with only Nix as a backup OF, especially since he’s currently being used as the primary SS.
I think they’ll keep Overbay for the time being and demote Adams.
In that scenario, I’d think Musty makes more sense than Boesch as the 4th OF, especially if they think he’s at least passable at 3B. I doubt they go that route though.

          • jsbrendog says:

they arenot going to add someone to the 40 man when boesch is already on it with options i would guess.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Yeah, I don’t think they’ll do it. Though I don’t think potentially losing Boesch is horrible thing that must be avoided. Musty could theoretically just replace Boesch (or even Mesa) as an OF with options on the 40-man roster whenever they need that roster spot down the road.

              • jsbrendog says:

but again, boesch actually has mlb success. I don’t know what they’re gonna do nor what they should, i’m just sayin what i think based on how theyve handled it in the past.

      • Eddard says:

Above average speed and defense is great if he’s a late game PR or defensive replacement. That’s what he should be. I know he won’t be DFA’d though because the FO says he sells too much merchandise.

        • mitch says:

Neither option is very good. Neal and Mustelier probably aren’t any better, but they’re at least different.

Realistically, they’d have to make a trade to upgrade the outfield. Any combination of Gardner and Ichiro/Wells/Nix/Neal/Mustlier/Boesch isn’t going to be very productive.

          • Kosmo says:

Mitch I respectfully disagree. Neal and Mustelier can hit and they´re both RH.
If NY can trade for someone like Alex Rios, who might be available at some point, where does that leave Granderson?

            • mitch says:

I said before i’d like to see Neal get a shot. I think he’s probably more of a 4A player, but so are Ichiro and Boesch at this point. Maybe he gets hot for a few weeks before Granderson gets back.

            • jsbrendog says:

neal and mustelier can hit in aaa and are 1000% unknowns at the ml level. im not saying theyre not going to hit but no one knows. they could just as easily be worse than ichiro (shudder to think)

and isnt rios killing it? why would chi trade him and if they do wouldn’t they want a lot back? and sweet leaping javy vazquez rios and wells on the same yankee team? i find that horrifying yet intriguing at the same time

              • Kosmo says:

if Chicago folds up their tent come July it has been suggested they would listen to offers for Rios. They would save about 20 million if he is traded at or before the deadline. The only problem would be the logjam created in the Yankee OF. Rios is not a great OBP guy but he hits in the clutch and he´s a RH bat.

        • Kosmo says:

let Ichiro sell merchandise elsewhere. He can´t hit a lick and the FO isn´t going to wait for Ichiro to catch fire for a 2-3 weeks. Better to give one of NY´s 3 AAA OF a shot.

          • trr says:

we still owe him $$$ for this year and another $13 million next year. doubtful the team will walk away from that until late next year

            • The Real Me says:

Another $6M, next year (on top of this year’s salary), I thought.

              • Kosmo says:

That´s correct 6.5 mill x 2 yrs. Just think of all the money Jeter, Arod and all the paychecks injured players are receiving. paying Ichiro off for 10 mil or so seems like chump change to me in Yankee world.

    • Kosmo says:

Tex and Youk don´t add any length to the lineup, they´re just replacing Overbay and Adams. Let´s hope they hit better.
Yanks might consider bringing up one of Mustelier, Neal or Almonte to bat 2nd and play RF. Then you might create “length“ in the lineup.

      • Mike Axisa says:

Yeah, it’s going to real hard to Teixeira and Youkilis to improve those .290-ish OBPs they’re getting from Overbay and Adams.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

Didn’t you write an article just this morning about help arriving at the wrong positions?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

So a guy who’s never had a MLB AB gets the second most AB’s, while the best offensive player on the team (so far anyways, realistically Cano should outperform him), bats 6th?
How about Musty actually shows he can hit MLB pitching before giving him a prime lineup spot?

        • Kosmo says:

Cano is batting 4th not 6th and he could just as well bat 3rd. I´m all for letting Mustelier audition down in the order to see if he can hold his own etc.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

I was referring to Hafner batting 6th.
He’s got a better OPS and wRC+ than Cano, currently. Not that I’d expect that to last, but he seems to be clearly one of the best overall hitters on the team.

  3. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Seems like way too aggressive a timetable for Tex, considering the nature of the injury.
Why not give him a little longer to make sure the wrist is fully healed and he has a chance to get his swings more locked in?

  4. jsbrendog says:

I am nervous Teix is gonna pull a Nick “mustard stain” Johnson….

  5. Robert says:

Love Youk but his back is shot,it will only be a matter of weeks before he gets back on the DL.
Tex is an upgrade over Overbay but his health could be an issue.
Our outfield needs help bring up Musty and Neal.
Play Romine his defense alone will be a trade chip come July when Cervelli gets back

Unfortunatly SS is a problem Our best prospect is playing 2B at A ball.

    • jsbrendog says:

i like how you said teix health COULD be an issue but youk is 100% shot, toast, done.

musty and neal arent on the 40 man roster and have no mlb track record and could not only be worse than ichiro/boesch but then would be at the cost of a possibly useful 40 man spot esp when all the injured guys come back. (jeter, cervelli, etc.)

romine isnt trade chip he is hopefully the catcher/backup catcher/tandem duo catcher of the next 5 or 6 yrs.

      • SDB says:

Hopefully the catching duo of the next few years will be Sanchez/Murphy.

I imagine Romine would be a trade chip this winter or next season when Sanchez is (hopefully) in the majors. Though right now I’ll take any catching situation that doesn’t include the words “Chris Stewart”.

        • trr says:

I’m thinking it will be quite a bit longer before the combo of Sanchez/Murphy are holding down the ML catching job.

        • jsbrendog says:

all hope aside your catching tandem going forward is cervelli/romine with no one else really looking ready next yr, you don’t trade one of those guys uinless there is something better….which to be honest there isnt. they can do for $500,000-$650,000 what other useless ppl like chris stewart et all can do for a mil

      • Kosmo says:

no one could be worse than Ichiro/Boesch. Granderson does return in a few weeks so it might be a good time to find out what Mustelier or Neal can do.

  6. mt says:

If Nova gets sent down I hope he handles it with maturity and a commitment to get better – I know he went down when they had to bring back Phil Hughes in 2011 and that stint seemed to do him good. Howvwer, now that we are 2 years later, after he has had some success at major league level, he may (wrongly) feel “punished” by having to go to AAA even though he was not pitching well before he got hurt and also late last year.

I am fearful of Tex and Youk lackluster offensive performance in first few games becuase they will be facing ML pitching in real games as opposed to extended spring training or AA picthing. At the very least hopefully they can extend the starters’ pitch counts before they get into some type of offensive groove. (Granderson’s first 8 or 9 games I think produced a couple of hits before he seemd to be getting better in his last full game before he got hurt again so that may be a test case of time it takes to get settled in. Everyone is different but at I hope they can at least manintain Overbay and Adams performance levels initially.)

    • jsbrendog says:

when he went to the pen he complained he didnt want to pitch out of the pen and wasnt comfortable. i doubt he will get better or even try. granted it is based off one comment and could mean nothing but dude, you have suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked and dont even really deserve an ML BP job and should prob be in the aaa rotation. shut your mouth, do what your told, spit cliches to the media, and EARN it back.

  7. Pat D says:

So who gets sent down? Adams obviously goes for Youkilis. He has to play everyday.

But who goes for Teix? Is Lyle’s time done? I don’t think so. I think they’ll keep him around for now. I think it’s much more likely that Claiborne or Nova goes back down. I would think Nova makes more sense at this point, no?
