Yankees sign Robert Coello to minor league deal, continue to add to bullpen stockpile

Via Ken Rosenthal: The Yankees have signed utility man Yangervis Solarte to a minor league contract. I assume he received an invitation to Spring Training since Rosenthal says he will compete against Eduardo Nunez, Dean Anna, Corban Joseph, and Scott Sizemore for a bench job in camp.

Solarte, 26, has hit .282/.323/.404 (~91 wRC+) with 23 homers in 1,145 plate appearances for the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate these last two years. He’s been a super-sub thoughout his career and he played at least 20 games at second, third, short, and left field over the last two seasons. Solarte has never played in the big leagues and he’s likely at the very bottom of the infield depth chart.

    Scrubs for 2B.
    Scrubs for SS.
    Scrubs for 3B.

Why not a scrub for all three?

    • BFDeal

You must be new to baseball, because teams stockpile depth pieces on a routine basis.

    • Laz

Do you complain on every thread?

AAA needs players too, especially if one of them is able to make it to the majors.

      • BFDeal

That’s his MO, regardless of what screen name he uses.

I like this approach a lot. The FA/trade market absolutely sucks, and I’m glad Cashman isn’t going for someone like HanRam with all his injury baggage, or Headley who’ll cost a ton.

I’m a fan of the Anna/Sizemore signings, and I prefer that to Reynolds – as we know how inconsistent he can be with the bat, and his glove is awful.

    • BFDeal

      But teh homrz!

I find it ironic that many of the commenters clamoring for Reynolds are the same ones that constantly complained about Granderson’s strikeout rate.

    • Laz

I would bring him in on a minor league deal if they can.

If he can regain his 2011 form of .323 obp and 37 hr I would take that, where he has fallen to though as a 20 hr at .300 obp is really unacceptable as a corner infielder.

  • Get Phelps Up (looking for a new name)

Mr. Sterling will have fun coming up with a home run call for him.

No problem with the signings. In fact I welcome them because of the lack of talent in the FA market. No sense in over paying as was the route taken in years past.

One or two of these guys may catch on especially if the Yanks show some interest and let them play on a fairly regular basis. If scissor hands (Nunez) was able to play a better D. He might be more of a fixture instead of one usually spoken about in negative terms.
