Sherman: Yankees avoid arbitration with Shawn Kelley

By

Via Joel Sherman: The Yankees and Shawn Kelley have agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.7625M, avoiding arbitration. He gets another $25k if he appears in 55 games. Kelley was projected for $1.5M by Matt Swartz. The 29-year-old had a 4.39 ERA (3.63 FIP) with a 11.98 K/9 (31.3 K%) in 53.1 innings last season.

The Yankees still have three remaining unsigned arbitration-eligible players (projected salaries in parentheses): David Robertson ($5.5M), Brett Gardner ($4M), and Ivan Nova ($2.8M). They avoided arbitration with Frankie Cervelli yesterday ($700k). Today is the deadline to file salary figures.

I wish the yankees would just lock up Drob. Maybe throw a 18/3 at him? he’s worth it!

I agree. Great player for an extension, though 18/3 won’t be anywhere near getting it done. Probably more like 27/3, given his expected earnings once he starts getting saves.

Little incentive for Robertson to do that right now.

Wait – what? If Kelley appears in 55 games, his salary goes from $1.7625m to $1.7875m? Why would anyone bother to negotiate a bonus that small?

(Small for MLBers, that is. If anyone feels like throwing me a $25k bonus, I certainly won’t mind.)

Got this feeling that Nova is gonna be stubborn & go to arb.

Not begrudging him his right to do so, but that number looks a little low for him.

      Must have been gas.
