Sherman: Yankees sign Dean Anna, Vidal Nuno for 2014

Inside the A-Rod trade

Via Joel Sherman: The Yankees have signed infielder Dean Anna and left-hander Vidal Nuno to one-year contracts for 2014. While in MLB, Anna will earn the $500,000 league minimum while Nuno will earn $504,500. Both guys still have all six years of team control remaining and can not become free agents until after the 2019 season at the earliest. I’m sure we’ll see both Anna and Nuno with the big league team at some point this summer, maybe even on the Opening Day roster.

I want to be a fringe MLB player when I grow up.

    • Tanaka is my Shidoshi (AKA Electric Nunez ll)

I’m already there if you just drop the “MLB” part…

    • Eselquetodolosabe

“The Fringes”, where all the fun resides.
I find myself rooting so hard for Dean Anna. Great MiLB numbers last year, albeit under hitter friendly conditions, but still. If this guy can be a revelation, that would be cool as heck.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Oh, I was referring more to the 500K.

    • nycsportzfan

This is my first thought. Dean Anna is gonna make 500, Jesus!

      • http://google A/C Bob

What have you ever done in life, this guy is in the majors. Keep dreaming loser.

  • Betty Lizard

    I’m just fringe, period.

    (I miss Walter.)

    • Tanakapalooza Floozy

+1000000000 internets! When Walter sat in the burned out car listening to Yaz I totally cried. And I’m a dude, despite my handle.

      • Betty Lizard

Me too. And I love Yaz, so how perfect.

  • Leg-End

I hope Dean Anna makes it purely because he has made it this far with the handicap of having both a boy and a girls name.

    • Chip Rodriguez

I hope Dean Anna makes it because I want to hear John Sterling’s HR call.

      • W.B. Mason Williams

        Dean Ann-ihilates one!

        • jjyank

          I like that one.

          • Ghengis McCann

I agree. It’s almost too good for Sterling though. A John Sterling call has three characteristics. Characteristic 1: It must be awful. Characteristic 2: It must be a slightly obscure reference. Characteristic 3: It can’t really make that much sense. I can see something like “Anna get your gun, Dean Creamed it!” or “Dean-o-Machine-o drops an Anna-Bomb!”

            • Kevin

“Anna get your gun, Dean Creamed it”

Who be ye, John Sterling incarnate?

      • Alkaline

        Dean Anna, WHAT A MANA-A

        DEAN ANN I’M A FAN!

These are pretty bad. I feel like I should do better.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

          ANN-A BOY, DEAN!!

    • kenthadley

I thought he was Chair of the history department at Rutgers.

      • Farewell Mo

If he is, he doesn’t hold a candle to Dean Wormer

        • Tanakapalooza Floozy

          AD FTW

  • jjyank

Let me preface this by saying that I don’t really know anything about Anna other than what his Fangraphs page says.

I know he’s not exactly young (he’s 27), but his minor league numbers aren’t bad at all. He had a pretty huge year in AAA last year (140 wRC+) and the rest of his stats are respectable. Sure, he could be a AAAA player, but maybe he’s a wildcard in this whole infield situation.

You simply cannot repeat this level of OBP without a real skill set. Having this, plus the ability to play 6 positions and having done work to prepare as an emergency catcher makes you a huge bench piece or adequate starter. Your first clue this is true is when you get traded and get an MLB deal after another organization f’d up and ran out your clock.

Dean Anna is a great story. He fights and battles every season with every club from A ball on up to the majors and with every club he always manages to prove his critics wrong!! Numbers are numbers and he belongs as a starter in the pin stripes this year !! Pay the man !!
