Game 19: Win it for Ivan

(Brian Blanco/Getty)

These last two days have been really rough on the Yankees. The Rays blew them out twice and decimated their bullpen in the process, all leading up to today’s spot start by Vidal Nuno. He hasn’t pitched in 12 days. Joe Girardi said he will be happy if they get 75 pitches out of him this afternoon, so the bullpen will be pressed into duty again.

Thankfully, the Yankees are off tomorrow and they will have a chance to catch their breath. These last two days have been pretty rough. Grabbing a win to earn a series split and halt the little losing streak before the off-day would make for a pretty good Sunday afternoon. Things are pretty hectic right now but they aren’t as bad as it seems. Here is the Rays lineup and here is the Yankees lineup:

  1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury
  2. SS Derek Jeter
  3. RF Carlos Beltran
  4. DH Alfonso Soriano
  5. 1B Mark Teixeira
  6. 3B Yangervis Solarte
  7. LF Brett Gardner
  8. 2B Brian Roberts
  9. C John Ryan Murphy
    LHP Vidal Nuno

It’s hot and humid in the Tampa area, but there’s no rain. Doesn’t really matter though. Tropicana Field has a dome. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40pm ET and you can watch live on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Roster Moves: As expected, Mark Teixeira (hamstring) was activated off the 15-day DL while both Preston Claiborne and Bryan Mitchell were called up. To make room on the roster, Ivan Nova (elbow) was placed on the 15-day DL, Scott Sizemore was optioned to Triple-A, and Matt Daley was designated for assignment.

This game has disaster written all over it. Exhausted bullpen that has looked awful the last two days, spot starter who hasn’t pitched in almost two weeks, playing against the Rays in the Trop (which always sucks). Luckily, baseball games never seem to turn out the way anyone expects them too. Who knows what will happen today?

  • JGYank

I’m glad I missed the last two games (I’m behind on a research paper). Wouldn’t have been able to watch those at all. Hopefully this one goes our way, but I’ll probably miss this one too. As for Nova, it sucks for him and the team, but a 5 man rotation never stays healthy throughout the season and we do have some options to replace him with. Could be worse. At least Tex is back and Drob will be here in a few days. The pen has different guys everyday but it wasn’t supposed to be the strength of our team. If we have our starters go deep into games, Drob, Kelley and Thornton should do fine.

  • Wheels

Just win and get the hell out of Tampa.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Matt Daley ended up being the sacrificial lamb after all following whichever night it was he crapped the bed. One appearance does not a pitcher make, and I hope he chooses to return to AAA. Can he refuse an assignment at this point?

Once we heard Sizemore had the option, I’d figure they’d go with Anna. Do not fret, Team Sizemore. You can’t keep that animal caged for long.

If we pray for anything on 4/20 Easter, it’s to not have a Bryan Mitchell mop-up appearance. That could make the past two games look like the 2009 World Series.

    It gets better.

    • forensic

He told Chad Jennings that he does have an option left, but he’s in some weird contract situation where they had to DFA him to get him to AAA. He said he does hope to be able to end up there though.

      • forensic

I should specify, that’s Daley that I’m talking about.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

          Ah. Thanks.

They’ve shown too much willingness to stick with him to just cut him loose after one shitty appearance.

  • forensic

Not thrilled with the lineup, but hopefully they can still do some work against Ramos. I’m just not sure if it’ll be enough given Nuno and Mitchell pitching for the Yankees (and the couple of not pretty spots in that lineup).

Here’s hoping they somehow pull out a split though!

  • Dalek Jeter

I’ve figured out why we’ve lost the last few games: We’ve gone very easy on the Prussia dedication so today: Für König, für das Vaterland widmen wir diesen Sieg zu Ehren des preußischen Königreich!

    • vicki

i unfollowed that bastard jordan brink.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        Embedded Red Sock Jordan Brink.

  • robbiewho?

typical series at Tampa, place is a dump to play. But honestly even though the season is early, there is something special about this team. Even with a couple bullpen meltdowns, Yanks are gonna do big things this year

  • Capo

God, I can’t wait until they get out of the Trop. I can’t stand how many of our fly balls are just dying on the warning track here this series.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Um? Okay…

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Oh, that’s what a pick at 1B looks like.

  • forensic

Numbers don’t lie, John??? Yeah, those numbers in 3(!) career starts and 17 innings mean everything!

  • forensic

That helps, especially when it’s hit within Jeter’s ‘range’.

  • forensic

I see we’re going to have way too much Meredith today.

    • lou

I know geez we need to hear the same story told in 10 different ways.

“Well I spoke to Nova toady and he felt upbeat”
“I spoke to nova today and he’s upset he can’t help the team like this but will take it one day at a time”

Please get rid of her I can’t stay her and her voice and the SAME NEWS told in 10 different way 40 times over and over and over.

“I spoke to Joe today he’s upset but hey it’s baseball”

      GTFO

  • nycsportzfan

    Nice hitting Tex!

    • lou

      Savior that momernt.

  • forensic

Wow, Tex even went to the wrong side of 2B!

  • nycsportzfan

Gardy and Tex with oppo field hits. I love that!

  • johnnysteeler

    Happy 53rd to Donnie Baseball

  • BigBlueAL

Id rather have Sizemore at 3b and Solarte at 2b vs a LH SP. Wish they wouldve found a way to keep Sizemore on the roster for now.

    • johnnysteeler

      Easy – dump Roberts

      • BigBlueAL

With Tex back meaning Johnson is back to 3b Im curious to see how long a leash they give Roberts considering Solarte’s emergence. Im sure it will be a pretty long one though.

        • johnnysteeler

Until Ryan is ready I guess. Then it’s either Anna or Roberts to go.

          • forensic

No doubt, Anna will go when Ryan is ready. They’ve always said the only reason he made the roster is as Ryan’s replacement as the backup SS. Roberts isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

    • lou

Wish they would fine a way to get full time players who can all together play a whole week without a day off….

  • Wheels

    Bummer.

  • Farewell Mo

Brian Roberts looks like he’s toast. Maybe they can sign Jed Lowie next offseason. .

    • forensic

I can’t help but put some of that on Girardi right now. Sitting the guy after he finally has a big 3-4 day? Way to actively try to screw him up.

  • forensic

Geez, Flaherty, is there anything you can come up with that isn’t wrong? Longoria’s 26 HR vs. the Yankees are 9 more than any other active player??? Just to name one, Ortiz has 39 homers against the Yankees.

  • nycsportzfan

How do you not love Nuno? This guy throws everything and he pitches between like 70mph and 90mph.lol

  • nycsportzfan

Also, Nuno has such a free and easy pitching motion.

  • vicki

rays’ bats are just tired, i guess.

    • Farewell Mo

      Lol

The Rays must be exhausted after all the running around the bases they’ve done this weekend.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

I can’t wait to not listen to Dewayne Staats, Brian Anderson & Todd Kalas

  • BigBlueAL

Alot of 1st pitch swinging by the Yankees.

  • forensic

    Everybody swing 1st pitch!

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Clearly, there’s a big Easter dinner waiting for them at the end of the game.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Jeter caught a couple breaks here; take advantage

  • Mick taylor

I turned off the t.v Friday night when I saw Joe west crew was umpiring. Yanks almost never win series when his crew umps. This goes back at least10 years, including his reversing the arod interference play against the red sox which probably gave the series to the sox.. Not that reversing that call or the earlier red sox foul ball call were wrong , but it was unprecedented. The arod play should not have been reversedas baseball is littered countless close or blown calls not reversed.Likewise, in the playoffs he made calls such as ruling the runner safe at second because cano did the phantom tag. Therehave been countless closeplays in games where he almostalwaysrules against yanks. At least with instant replay the fat fuck will not be able to get away with it as much

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Joe West is with a different crew this year. He was with Bob Davidson two years ago when Girardi got tossed only 3 times that year – all with that crew (and all against the Tigers I believe).

    • Sweetness

That crew had Thursday’s game too. I suppose you kept the TV on for that game.

  • Wheels

The Trop just sucks the life out of everyone.

  • forensic

Come on, Beltran! Yanks need a big hit here!

    • johnnysteeler

Even Beltran is in a hurry today

    • forensic

Or just swing at the first pitch like everyone else too, and then weakly fly out.

  • Scarfonso

Sucks about Nova. Although, let’s not forget that DJ Mitchell is ready and available – and I don’t think he’d mind geting out of his contract with the Bridgeport Bluefish: http://www.pointstreak.com/bas.....rid=607061

  • nycsportzfan

    Nuno beasting!.lol

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

    ALPHONSO!!!

  • forensic

Wow Sori, no hop, skip, and double toe-tap???

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

All hell just broke loose in Pittsburgh.

Carlos Gomez the lightning Rod again

    • forensic

      What happened?

Not surprised in the least though, Gomez is an enormous shithead.

      • johnnysteeler

Tripled then started mouthing off at Gerrit Cole.

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Gomez hit a deep fly to center off Gerritt Cole and walked it off.

It hit the base of the wall. Gomez still got a triple. Cole started talking shit at Gomez, Gomez comes off the base and came at him.

        Benches cleared punches thrown.

        • forensic

Sucks that he still got the triple (he’s against my fantasy team this week) but at least he was ejected too. Hopefully he somehow got hurt also (I have zero sympathy for that piece of shit).

          • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

FWIW, Travis Snider landed a punch.

  • nycsportzfan

Texy having a good game. Now its time to get this run in.

  • robbiewho?

Nuno looking good, hope it holds second time through the lineup

  • nycsportzfan

Holy shit, crazy brawl between brew crew and pirates.lol

    • robbiewho?

      roid rage

      • nycsportzfan

Boys will be boys, type thing.

    • Winter

Gomez stood at the plate and watched his not-homer.

  • nycsportzfan

    Hell yeah, Sori!!!!

  • robbiewho?

Yanks hitting it hard…just right at people. If Nuno can hold Yanks will break this one open

  • WhittakerWalt

    Worst Sterling call EVER.

  • robbiewho?

thats an inside park home run….the fielder tried to sell it as a catch and the runner kept going

  • Wheels

How could the umps get that wrong in the first place?

  • robbiewho?

not an ground rule double if the fielder pretends to catch it and not throw it back in

  • nsalem

This is interesting. Myers knew he didn’t catch the ball so he should he not be held responsible knowing he didn’t get catch it and Gardner is given the Home Run.

  • nycsportzfan

    Wow, what the fuck!

  • forensic

    Son of a bitch!!!

Please have hit the wall first!

  • Long-Past-His-Day-Rod

They should give Gardner the inside the parker for running it out.

  • Wheels

    Nice!!

    • Wheels

At least it scored a run.

  • nycsportzfan

Gardy driving in runs this yr.

  • nycsportzfan

Fuck you Myers, you cheater!!lol Gardy gets er done! Thank god for Replay!

    • nsalem

I wouldn’t really all that cheating. It’s part of the game which every player on every team does.

  • forensic

Now, stupid umpire discretion will possibly mess up where Gardy ends up. At least it’ll get a run home, if nothing else.

    • forensic

Yup, he likely should’ve been at 3rd, but they treat him like some normal baserunner and just leave him at 2nd. That blows.

  • Lukaszek

    Yo umpires, check dat catch!

  • Grit for Brains

How on earth is that not a homerun???????

  • Alkaline

I don’t agree with the placement at all. It was Myer’s choice to not throw the ball in to stop Gardy. Any league I played where an outfielder tried trapping the ball, the runner kept on going if the umpire didn’t call the out until they threw the ball in.

    • Winter

But in this case the umpire did call the out…

      • Alkaline

Yup. Didn’t see that till replay.

  • marechal

Wow, this is ridiculous. You are basically rewarding the outfielder for trying to trick the umpires.

    • nycsportzfan

How can you say for sure that Myers didn’t think he caught it, though? Thats the problem you get.

  • Farewell Mo

Should be an inside the park home run. Myers knew he didn’t catch it. Yanks shouldn’t be penalized for rays failed attempt at cheating.

    • robbiewho?

      exactly…this is bullshit

    • nsalem

That was my first reaction also, but once the umpire calls him out I guess the play is considered dead.

    • forensic

I could see a triple much more than a homer.

  • JMK

That’s bullshit. It should clearly be an inside-the-park home run.

    • Sweetness

      Clearly??

      • JMK

Yes. The live ball was not caught in play, and the runner touched all the bases. That’s an inside-the-park home run.

        • forensic

It’s not a live ball once it’s called an out.

        • Sweetness

The live ball was not caught in play

Huh? Go eat an Easter egg or something. You are clueless.

  • nycsportzfan

Damn, I thought off the bat, it was leaving the yard. How’d that stay in the park? I’m happy we got a lead though.

  • Axis of Mike

Can anybody explain the rule on that? If the ball hits the fence, it’s… what? Why wasn’t it either an out or a dinger?

    • forensic

The yellow line is above the fence, which is still in play. On the replay, it’s umpire’s discretion on where to place Gardner.

  • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

Don’t understand why that’s a ground rule double. The ball was still in play and Gardner crossed home so the run should count.

    • forensic

It’s not a ground rule double. It’s umpire’s discretion placing him at 2nd. And technically, the play was called out, so the ball wasn’t still in play.

      • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

        Ah, that makes sense.

    • Wheels

      Good point.

    • Sweetness

The umps shut the play down by calling an out. It’s easy to score when nobody is trying to get you out.

      • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

I don’t know, I knew a guy in school who couldn’t score a run even if he sneaked into the park at night to run the bases.

      • Alkaline

Okay, that I get at least. Still irksome.

      • Wheels

Umps screwed it all up by calling it an out. How could they not see it hit the wall first from their vantage point?

        • forensic

Because his glove was turned around and blocking the view from the IF area.

          • Wheels

Look st the replay, it was way over his mitt. And to the side.

            • forensic

Which is easy to see on a zoomed in camera replay. Not so much from field level 200+ feet away.

              • Wheels

But, but, they’re trained professionals! ha

  • vicki

    there goes the nuno-no.

  • robbiewho?

Only silver lining is without replay they would have called that a catch, so even though Gardner got jobbed out of what should be an inside the park home run, at least the Yanks got one run instead of none

    • Sweetness

No way in hell that if Myers plays that ball live and does not try to fake out the umps by selling a catch that Gardy acquires home on that play.

  • nycsportzfan

John Flaherty is one dumb ass dude. I’m sorry if that offends some of you that like em, but my god.

    • forensic

I’m sorry if that offends some of you that like em

I don’t think you have anything to worry about there.

      • nycsportzfan

He said how he didn’t understand why Gardner wasen’t allowed to score, as you assume Myers knew he didn’t catch that.

Uhhh, hey John, thats the problem, you can’t assume Myers knew he caught it.

    • John Flaherty

      Phuck you you phitty pheller.

  • Alkaline

So I know no one cares about my fantasy team, but I now have 6 people who hit the DL this year since Nova did. This is Bolshevik.

    • Winter

Unfortunately, Nova hitting the DL might have been good for your fantasy team.

  • nycsportzfan

Look where longo’s standing, go outside and low nuno!

  • nycsportzfan

    Sit down Longo! Yeah!!!!

  • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

Wil Myers will now try to sell a foul tip as a home run.

  • nsalem

Don’t let Myers beat you. With Loney on deck.

  • nycsportzfan

Okay, way to battle Nuno! You da man!

  • robbiewho?

    nice!

  • nycsportzfan

Wow, Nuno losing it quick here. 4pitch walk to Brandon Guyer? Thats the kinda stuff that bites you directly in the butt cheek.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Brandon’s last name makes me think of Kevin Millar.

    I wanna punch him.

  • forensic

They’re starting to square up Nuno a bit. Glad the bullpen is getting going.

    • forensic

And clearly his control is going too. Hopefully the change doesn’t come too late. Certainly can’t let him go much longer, at least not to Rodriguez, who has an annoying tendency to destroy Yankee lefties.

      • nycsportzfan

If he gets outta this jam, do you start em in the 6th?

        • forensic

No way, they’ve been really squaring him up and there’s a switch-hitter and a bunch of righties coming up. He did a great job, let him sit and enjoy it and hope for the best for 4 innings of relief.

          • nycsportzfan

I’d give him Zobrist, then take him out.

  • forensic

I don’t know why, but it really bugs me how everytime Flaherty says ‘Larry Rothschild’ he feels the innate need to say ‘The Pitching Coach’, like it’s one full name.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Flaherty seems to have forgotten he played for Rothschild.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Please don’t have me have to sit through Bryan Mitchell today. It’s fucking Easter.

  • johnnysteeler

Running out of gas. Get pen working quick.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

He’s going to start the 6th inning, too.

    • forensic

I sure as hell hope not.

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Under 70 pitches and you want Zobrist to bat right-handed, not left.

        • forensic

He’s already losing it with balls being squared up and walking guys and Zobrist has already had two good AB’s against him. I want the fresh pitcher to face him and give him a different look.

          • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Ok. We’ll see. I’m just saying I think that’s the way Joe is going to go.

            • forensic

He could, I just wouldn’t agree with it. 69 isn’t that far off the 70 or even the 75 he thought he might be able to get from him.

              • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

He’s not pitching to 3,4,5 just Zobrist

                • forensic

                  Yeah, that’s a given (theoretically).

                • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

                  You win.

                  • forensic

All I want is four scoreless innings, then we can all win. :-)

  • forensic

Whew, great job Nuno and Murphy! Terrific plan that Ab!

  • nycsportzfan

Thank god, I coulden’t take Ryan Hanigan beating us back to back days.

  • nycsportzfan

Way to fucking battle, Nuno! 5shutout innings! Just like last yr for the crafty lefty!

  • forensic

I don’t care that he’s one out away from qualifying for the win. No way I would let him face Rodriguez here. Hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite them.

    • nsalem

      100% agreed

  • nsalem

    Oh Oh Rodriguez

  • robbiewho?

5 scoreless from Nuno??? take that all day

    • nycsportzfan

Hes extremely crafty. He pitches fast, and can differ his MPH by quite a bit(70′s-89) and has 3pitches. He can certainly help. Also, he peppers the strikezone.

      • robbiewho?

absolutely…has pitched out of some jams too.

  • nycsportzfan

Beltran with a infield single..lol I’ll take it!

  • johnnysteeler

He’s done his job. Now for bullpen to sort themselves out.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Nice hustle, Carlos

  • forensic

    Beltran with the wheels!

  • forensic

A lined shot base hit to CF??? It was a groundball that just avoided the shift.

  • nycsportzfan

Sexy Texy with multi hit game! I guess it was a good idea to play him today instead of wait till Boston series. Good call Joe.

  • forensic

    Terrible strike call there.

  • nycsportzfan

I’d love to have McGee in our bullpen. A terrible call by the ump though on that 1-1 pitch to Solarte.

As much as I think McGee’s good, I really hope we get him today.

  • forensic

Screw you Myers, I’m getting tired of your shit!

  • robbiewho?

alright Meyers that was a good REAL catch

  • nycsportzfan

Jesus Christ, the ball just woulden’t freaking hit the ground!

  • forensic

    Ugh…

  • forensic

Come on Gardy! Got a third hit in you today?

  • nycsportzfan

Gardner just missed to great pitches to hit. Hes pretty much screwed now.

  • nycsportzfan

God, I want this game! After the last 2games, how nice would it be, after all that, to of given nothing to the rays but a split?

  • forensic

Ok Phelps, channel the you that faced the Red Sox, not the you from the rest of the season.

  • robbiewho?

    lets go Phelps

  • nycsportzfan

So far, so good, for Phelpsy here. He might be able to go multi innings if he gets this last guy out.

    • forensic

I certainly give him a shot in the 7th. He’ll have Loney as a lefty, and maybe a pinch-hitter in Joyce/Dejesus, but he did well that inning. If it lines up right, maybe try Thornton against one of those PHer’s, but I haven’t built up much faith in him yet.

      • nycsportzfan

Welp, hopefully we get that faith in Thornton built a bit today, because hes coming in.lol Solid 1.1 outta Phelpsy.

  • nycsportzfan

People always talk about Betances command, but Phelps is always behind in the count it seems, and he does walk guys. I’m more nervous when Phelps is out there then Betances. I love me some Phelps, but he makes me mad nervous.

I’m a diehard Irish fan as well.

    • Bryguy084

Same here! ND student, so I’m pulling double for BGDP! It’s tough though, with how he’s always behind in the count. Ugh

  • nsalem

Guess Nuno will go next Saturday,

    • nycsportzfan

Who we playing, just outta curiosity?

      • forensic

        The Angels, in the Bronx.

  • nycsportzfan

The Captain can ball at SS, I don’t give a fuck what anyone says! Hes having a great yr in the field so far!

    • Wheels

      You cannot objectively say that.

      • nsalem

You can it’s just not true. Some people choose to ignore his inability to go to his left. The person who made that comment didn’t think that Nunez was a terrible fielder.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

You’re expecting something different from him?

        • Wheels

          no

  • Wheels

    niceee.

  • forensic

    Fall-down range FTW!!!

JR Murphy is going yard here.

John Ryan can kiss my butt

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Life is about taking risks

  • robbiewho?

time for Roberts to sit for a while

  • forensic

The YES cameras keep missing the first base ump making the call on the appeals. They gotta be a little quicker on the switch over there.

  • nycsportzfan

    Jesus, McGee is tough.

  • forensic

No Flaherty, it’s not all about Maddon knowing his bullpen better than ‘we’ do. It’s about you being a dumbass and refusing to look at numbers, such as the reverse splits that both McGee and Peralta have.

  • nycsportzfan

Come on Yanks, lets get us a shutout today. 1-0 WIN would be kinda neat, after giving up so many runs the past 2games. Takes alot of the built up momentum away from the Rays.

  • forensic

Guess Cano didn’t like that he was on the verge of dropping under both a .250 BA and .300 OBP today as he put two hits on the board. Of course, he was also caught stealing, which I’ll never understand why he seemingly continues trying to run periodically.

  • forensic

Nice Phelps, now a lefty and then maybe PH lefties. This is where it gets interesting…

Ok, guess not that interesting, decision-wise. Phelps was rolling, not a huge fan of this move, but I guess if you’re going to have a Thornton on your team you might as well use him now (though he’s going to face righties after Loney). I just don’t have faith in him yet.

  • nsalem

Yes. Everyone was raving about the new and improved Smoak after the first week of the season but he seems to have returned to his former self. I’m shedding crocodile tears. We will see them close up in about 8 days. Should be fun.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Ryan Roucco in the Bob Lorenz role today?

    • forensic

He was there yesterday too. Don’t know if he took the back-up job from Shearn/Newman, but if so, Awesome! (even though I know almost nothing about Ruocco, he can’t possibly be worse than Newman)

      • Wheels

He co-hosts a radio show with Stephen A. Smith, and he’s pretty decent. Seems to have a brain.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Longtime NYC radio guy. Hosts early afternoon show with Stephen A. Smith. Not terrible. Face definitely for radio.

        I like Nancy.

        • forensic

Yeah, I googled him yesterday since I was getting him confused with Ryan Hurley from The Michael Kay Show and Ryen Russillo from the SVP show.

          Too damn many Ryans!

          • Jorge Steinbrenner

Hurley’s the producer you only heard called out every five minutes, usually as a punchline, on the Kay show.

  • nycsportzfan

Freaking Thornton! Now he starts Guyer off with a ball.

  • forensic

Ugh, and there’s the problem. Thornton fails to do his most important job, get the lefty out, and now he’s stuck facing a bunch of righties with a guy on base and still two outs to go.

  • robbiewho?

oh boy here goes Girardi tinkering too much with the bullpen trying to be smarter than Madden.

    • nsalem

I would put in a decent performing lefty against Loney every chance I could.

      • robbiewho?

yup worked like a charm. I get the logic…but with the bullpen getting destroyed the last two games, Phelps coulda pitched a couple more innings…esp being the 7th inning and their was no one in scoring position. Now another change. Girardi does this a couple times a year where he tries to be too cool for the room with match ups and it usually doesn’t end well

  • forensic

    Damnit Roberts!!!

    You piece of shit!

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Oh, Brian. That could be game-changing.

    • forensic

No matter what, it is game-changing. It forces Warren in really early and they have to somehow get 8 outs from Warren and Kelley starting with two guys on base without allowing any runs to score. This is serious trouble right now. REALLY need another grounder from Escobar here.

  • forensic

Someone tell these dumbasses that dropping it on the transfer no longer counts as a catch.

  • Winter

Those are some good pitching matchups coming up this week.

  • forensic

No Flaherty, it’s not only umpire’s decision now because it’s the 7th inning.

Seriously, how does he keep this job???

  • nycsportzfan

Roberts can’t do anything right. So sick and tired of watching him swing at garbage in the dirt and then the dude can’t even make as routine a catch and transfer are your gonna get? Maybe him being fairly healthy this yr is a bad thing?

  • nycsportzfan

    Fuck you Roberts! FUCK YOU!

  • Winter

How has no one in the YES booth heard about the new transfer rule? Knowing about baseball is literally their job.

    • nsalem

      Tell that to Mike Francessa.

    • Mikhel

And now it seems that rule is gonna be changed to what it used to be, because it is a dumb rule, if you already made the catch THEN it is a catch, but right now it is not a catch even if you took various steps and later dropped it trying to get it out of the glove.

  • nycsportzfan

I can’t even watch right now. If they give up runs here, i’m jumping on a flight to Tampa, and gonna blow on roberts, and break his leg!

  • forensic

I’m getting a very Greg-like feeling of this game unraveling like Friday did.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

But are you getting a full-on rage nycsportzphan feeling?

  • nycsportzfan

Thanks Roberts. Thanks alot, you fucking asshole!

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Ugh. The fall down range giveth and the fall down range….

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Ugh, noodle arm Beltran.

Lol, Loney was actually galloping he is so slow

  • nycsportzfan

Also, lets not let Girardi off the hook here, the idiot should of kept Phelps in the game, he was pitching extremely well. Baseball managers are so stupid, with there locked in situations. Do these guys have any instincts at all?

  • Mykey

Yeah Roberts, it’s just not working out.

  • nycsportzfan

Welp, thanks to a combonation of Giardi and piece of shit Roberts, its now a tie game. God fucking damn it!

    • Winter

What did Giardi do this time?

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

        Not enough “r”‘s.

        *waits for applause*

        • Truther

Not surprisingly you are still waiting.

          • Havok9120

Seriously, comment on other things. Maybe someone will start to take you seriously.

This stalking of two commenters is just sad.

      • nycsportzfan

Girardi should of never took Phelps out for Warren. He was pitching really well, and you burned your one lefty in the pen. Thank god, when they started pinch hitting for all there lefties, it didn’t bite us, but it could have.

      • robbiewho?

just some unnecessary tinkering with the bullpen. Phelps was doing fine and then Binder Joe struck a little too early with trying to do match ups with a depleted bullpen. Problem now, its a tie game and two innings to go. Not much left in the bullpen

        • Cesar “Stairs” Cabral

          *nods*

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

Slippery slope. You’re blaming him for things that haven’t happened yet. Yanks score here and hold lead and, suddenly, this isn’t a problem.

      • Mikhel

He took Phelps out because RHP can not dominate LHB, got a LHP (Thornton) but couldn’t get the LHB out, and the guy he dominated (Guyer, a RHB) ws called safe because Roberts couldn’t make the out, then he had to bring a RHP who surrendered the lead with a hit and a sac fly.

Basically, he took his RHP for fear a batter would tie the game (Loney), but ultimately ended up with a tied game and three less pitchers in the bullpen (Phelps, Thornton and Warren).

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Closer play at the plate than I thought it would be, at least.

  • BigBlueAL

Im shocked 1 run wasnt going to be enough to win this game.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      I laughed, then nodded.

    • nycsportzfan

Well, Roberts made sure 1run won’t be enough, thats for sure.

    • nycsportzfan

And if not for the Roberts error, we got Kelley pitching to end this game right now. So in essence, if our closer does what hes supposed to, 1run could of very well been enough.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

I’m not blaming Girardi for anything. You’d think we could score more than 1 run off Cesar “Freaking” Ramos.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Very little reason to blame Girardi. Not enough offense. Easy out that extended an inning in a close game bobbled.

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

        Right. There you go.

      • forensic

The 1 run is pitiful (as was Roberts’ play), but Girardi had a lead with a rolling pitcher on the mound and felt the need to make too many pitching changes. The more pitchers you use, the more likely it is you’re going to run into someone who doesn’t have it, especially when you go to a Matt Thornton.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

Like I said above, if they score now, and hold that lead with their best relievers, it’s no longer a problem.

I get what you’re saying, but he prioritized “now” over “three innings from now.”

          • forensic

Even if they score now, holding the lead is in even more trouble because he already forced Warren to throw double-digit pitches in the 7th inning.

And either way, (arguably) poor decision-making isn’t negated by getting bailed out later.

            • Jorge Steinbrenner

I don’t think it was optimal decision-making. I just don’t think it’s a costly mistake until Bryan Mitchell is out there in a tie ball game.

              • forensic

Well, thanks to all his needless moves, they’re one inning away from either Claiborne or Mitchell pitching the 10th inning.

                • Jorge Steinbrenner

And THEN you’ll be right. :)

                  • forensic

So if Kelley blows it in the 9th inning, then you and Girardi are right, since Mitchell didn’t end up pitching? ;-)

                    • Jorge Steinbrenner

This is all about Bryan Mitchell. :)

In that case, I think we’re just all wrong.

                    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I can’t imagine many scenarios in which you still wouldn’t have Kelley out there in the ninth.

I’d much rather have had Thornton still sitting in the bullpen for afterwards rather than used up already, though.

          • Mikhel

Sure, and for that reason, he should have taken into account that Phelps was pitching fine NOW, at most Phelps needed a confidence vote to keep pitching, he has been a starter and long reliever, I see no reason to limit him.

          • forensic

And really, prioritizing ‘now’ means he would’ve stuck with Phelps who was already rolling and pitching well, rather than going to the unknown.

    • robbiewho?

its the same thing Rays fans (all 2 of them) are saying about Nuno. But both starting pitchers did their job. Difference is after the last two games Yanks bullpen has been destroyed. Phelps was fine, but Girardi felt the need to out manage Madden, problem is he probably out managed himself from a series split here. I get the lefty lefty match up, but 7th inning with a lot of baseball to go and a depleted bullpen the change was pre mature. hopefully the Yanks can put up some runs against their bullpen and Yanks can get out of the Trop and get a day off.

  • nycsportzfan

    So frustrated right now.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      We didn’t notice.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Come on, old man. You can do it.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Ok, come on old man #2. I believe in you.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Son of a!

    • forensic

lol, I was gonna say ‘old man’ applies to so many options in the lineup.

  • Wheels

    Beltran, it’s winning time.

    • Wheels

      almost..

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

    That was……..foul?

  • BigBlueAL

Offense is averaging 3.8 runs per game. Unfortunately games like today have been pretty normal this season so far.

    • Mikhel

That’s why I don’t like those kinds of averages, for example yesterday Tampa scored 16 runs and with today’s run they average 8.5 runs in two games, and yet today’s game is tied at 1.

A better way to measure an offense could be to contabilize in how many innings they score per 9 played.

  • forensic

    Ugh, so close…

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

You knew “swing at strike three” was coming next as well.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

I don’t think the Yankees have ever hit Joelle Peralta.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Surely old man #3 can do it.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      Brittle Man on deck.

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

That’s MR. Brittle man, to you!

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Problem with 3-2 counts to Sori is that he refuses to walk.

  • nycsportzfan

I swear the Orioles are paying Roberts more then the Yanks, to sabotage us. Its like baseballs version of “Turn”.

  • nycsportzfan

We got McCann and Ichiro on the bench to PH, with a day of tomorrow, I hope we don’t shy away from using them.

    • nycsportzfan

      off

    • robbiewho?

days off for those guys are to never be messed with. Only tired arms in the bullpen shall be used to exhaustion….so says the binder

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Have you noticed how you’re the only person bringing up the binder schtick on here?

    • forensic

Ichiro won’t PH for anyone. McCann certainly could if they get to Murphy in the 9th (or 10th if they’re still going).

  • forensic

Good job not screwing that one up, Roberts…

  • Wheels

    Jesus Tex.

  • robbiewho?

    ugh

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

That wasn’t on the mark, Teixeira.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

No bobble at 2nd! Hey hey!

    :)

  • YankeeDJW

Roberts held on to that one, at least.

  • nycsportzfan

    hahahhaha!

  • nycsportzfan

Can someone just hit a freaking HR, so we can get Kelley in there and go on with are day, please?

  • forensic

And just like the first week of the season, Tex screwing up defensively again.

    • Mikhel

I don’t know what is happening to him, last season was the same when he first came back from that awful injury. It is as if he forgot how to field and what to do with the ball.

  • YankeeDJW

    Tex blows another one…

  • Winter

See, that’s what happens when you have an inexperienced first basema– oh, wait.

  • Mikhel

Teixeira with another error?!?! Mark has been playing very erratically since his comeback of last year, though not every error has been charged to him and the scorers have given “infield hits” like when Omar Vizquel’s errors were charged to the 1st baseman or were deemed infield hits when he played in Cleveland.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Think about how erratically he’s played in a season now. There’s rust there.

      No harm, no foul, though.

      • YankeeDJW

If he doesn’t get his act together, it’s going to cost us eventually. He’s booting plays he would’ve made in his sleep two years ago.

      • Mikhel

Yeah, I hope he gets better, he is definitely one of the best fielding first baseman in the game. Not like Mattingly (Teix was a diehard fan of Donnie and he molded himself to try and play like him) but he is very good.

  • forensic

Two closers potentially in a tie game? Please let theirs blow it before ours.

  • alittleblackegg

If the Yankees are going to play a game like this, they need to do it in the evening, when I can have a couple drinks. This is rough going on a Sunday afternoon.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Tex is mad at all of you

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      See how pissed he is?

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

He’s going to punch the kid in the clubhouse

        • Mikhel

          LOL

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’ve never seen him that pissed. Every right to be too.

  • nycsportzfan

Ankle high fastball called strike 3!!! Bullshit!!!!!

  • Wheels

    Bullshit.

  • robbiewho?

    holly shit…what a horrible call

  • nycsportzfan

This team is jekyl and hyde offensively. My god.

  • forensic

Well, that was a quick inning.

  • Lukaszek

The elephants called; they want their strike zone back

    • Mikhel

      hahahahahaha +1

  • forensic

Anyone mind if I just choose to blame this whole potentially lost weekend on Flaherty?

    No? Ok, good…

    • nycsportzfan

Well, the fact we’d be one out away from a split right now if not for ROberts error, I must insist you give some blame to Roberts as well.

  • BigBlueAL

How many extra innings will it take for the Yankees to score again?? 5?? 6?? 10??

  • nycsportzfan

Great, this ones over. Can all ready see where this ones going.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

This would be a bad game to go to extras

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’ll have to tell forensic he was right. We can’t have that.

    • forensic

At this point, it’d be a terrific game to go to extras. Certainly better than the alternative.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

So what it Bryan Mitchell is the WINNING pitcher in extras?

  • nycsportzfan

Just thinking this should be to end the game, not to keep it tied is killing me, right now. Someone go tickle Roberts with a feather and break his ribs, please!

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Either the best, or worst, sac bunt ever.

  • Mikhel

    I hope Loney doesn’t hit a HR here…

  • Wheels

    Nice play.

  • nycsportzfan

How fitting, a terrible hitter and super slow runner Jose Molina could be the one who gets us here.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Gee, I wonder how this will end

  • Wheels

    Awesome, make up call

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

We get this third out for Prussia.

  • http://thesportsquotient.com Eduarvis Solunez

What goes around comes around on that strike 3…

  • Axis of Mike

We got it back, but that was even more clearly a ball!

  • YankeeDJW

Same ball Tex was punched out on.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

We win in extras for Prussia!

  • YankeeDJW

He has no idea where the ball is going.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

That called strike three would disagree.

      • YankeeDJW

Even a blind squirrel will find a nut once in a while ;)

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

This team employed several blind squirrels last year. Most played third.

  • robbiewho?

so glad we payed so much attention to Loney who has a career 87 home runs in the 7th with no one on. Def demanded all the attention of Girardi to go to the bullpen. And now lets pitch away from the guy batting .136…am I in the twilight zone?

  • nycsportzfan

Haha, and the makeup call for Tex!

  • robbiewho?

    make up call for Tex

    • Axis of Mike

Only explanation. Low AND outside to boot!

  • nycsportzfan

Would it be fair for Nuno to give a bitch smack to Roberts after the game?

  • Havok9120

Alright boys, I’ve been elsewhere the entire game. But we’ve gotta pull this out for the glory of Prussia.

    We got ‘dis.

  • jjyank

Ah fuck it, it’s 4/20. I’ll be a late game thread addition.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

      *lights…absolutely nothing…..up*

    • Truther

      Gotta love potheads. 4/20 dude…..

      Give me a break

      • jjyank

        Gotta love trolls.

        • Truther

Yeah dude. Puff puff pass brother. HAHAHA

          • jjyank

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

          • Havok9120

And making a “heh heh, he’s a pothead” clearly proves you’re not a troll.

I’d be more annoyed if this didn’t let me keep wondering which poster you are.

      • Havok9120

        Nice to see you, man.

I mean, it would be nice if this screenie was used to do anything besides stalk a pair of regulars, but the wit and intelligence displayed in your one-liners….

        You’re basically Voltaire.

      • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

You are such a fucking stalker.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

          *brushes lint off fancy jacket*

          • Truther

Off of your fancy new Jose Fernandez jersey.

            Fixed that for ya.

            • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Wow, you don’t even know how to do that joke.

            • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’d be proud to wear his shirt, actually.

            • Havok9120

Even if you were right (you’re not, I know the guy), what exactly do you think that would prove? The two teams virtually never play each other. When, exactly, would him being a fan of both teams matter?

And how would that not still make you a troll?

  • nycsportzfan

    Roberts= FAIL!

  • forensic

Wow, this ump must not understand that they use bats in this sport, not golf clubs.

    • jjyank

He definitely has a low zone.

    • Havok9120

It’s been low the whole game, but it’s gotten worse as we’ve gone.

  • forensic

Really got a hold of that one, McCann.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

    Officer McCann reporting for duty.

  • nycsportzfan

Can we get a fucking guy on base, please? Freaking boring ass offense.

    • forensic

      14 in a row retired.

      • nycsportzfan

        Crazy

        • nycsportzfan

          Finally, its over! Cappy!

  • nycsportzfan

What do we got 2runs in are last 20innings or some shit? I don’t even think we got 10hits in are last 20innings, do we?

    • Mikhel

2 R, 9H in the last 21 innings. 25 R, and a shitload of hits received in that same span.

  • Naved

Can Betances go today if need be?

    • forensic

Nope (unless something REALLY crazy happened). He threw over 40 pitches yesterday.

  • nycsportzfan

    Snooze fest.

    • Havok9120

It’s baseball. A game of offensive failure. The Rays have played roughly as bad offensively, and neither performance is all that far outside the norm.

We’re not gonna score 10 runs and steal half a dozen bases every game.

  • Alkaline

Come on. Get a big W for ze off day.

  • forensic

And this now shows how much of an overreaction unnecessary the two pitching moves were. You bring these guys up because you don’t want to wear out your normal guys, but Girardi is so afraid to go to them that he’ll use Kelley for a 2nd inning anyway instead.

I’m not looking forward to see Claiborne or Mitchell pitch, but the inevitable walk-off winner from Longoria off Kelley is just going to make this even more of a waste.

    • forensic

      reverse unnecessary and overreaction…

      • Havok9120

        Really though.

I completely understand the point you were going for, but your last sentence was definitely channeling your inner Greg.

    • forensic

      Whew, thanks Kelley.

  • jjyank

    Shawn Fuckin’ Kelly. Straight baller.

  • robbiewho?

Ok Kelly! now lets go offense

  • Wheels

    Nice Kelley.

  • OldYanksFan

Can someone tell me how/where we got Shawn Kelly from?

    • forensic

Trade from the Mariners for Abe Almonte, who is now undeservedly their leadoff hitter.

    • Mikhel

Released by the Mariners, I think.

  • Havok9120

    Alright, boys, with the bats.

  • Alkaline

    Shawn KKKKelley

    • Havok9120

You’ve reverted to your old handle?

      • Alkaline

        Ah forgot. Different PC.

  • Wheels

    Seize victory here.

  • jjyank

Nice Cap. Keep it moving boys.

  • forensic

Wow, good job Joe. Wasn’t sure he’d have the guts to pull Jeter to improve something.

  • forensic

Heath Bell? The offense might actually have a chance to get a baserunner and, quite possibly, even score…

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

If you can’t score a run off Heath Bell you don’t deserve to win.

  • forensic

Wow, got a gift there Beltran. Please make it pay off now.

  • Alkaline

    Steal Ze Base!

  • jjyank

Does Ichiro steal here against Molina? Normally I’d say yes, but I’m not sure against Molina.

    • Havok9120

      If he’s not….why the PR?

      • forensic

I see both sides. You want the steal, but even if he doesn’t, Ichiro has a much better chance of scoring on a gapper than Jeter does.

        • Havok9120

Have to be a looonnng double. This isn’t Jeter vs. 30 year old Ichiro.

I certainly see both sides too, but it seems like a waste.

      • jjyank

Better chance to score from second on a single, should he get there. I’m not saying I’m against it. Just don’t think it’s a slam dunk.

        • Havok9120

Gotta get him to 2nd though.

          • jjyank

Considering the call is in review, him being safe ain’t a slam dunk either.

      • Mikhel

JoeG is not the kind of manager to bring a pinch runner to steal a base, maybe the next batter will hit a double play and Girardi’s “strategy” will backfire… again.

  • Alkaline

This is why we got you Beltran. Let’s go!

  • Havok9120

The Captain, quietly having a nice month.

Holy cow, a PR for Jeter.

  • forensic

Three games in the 11th inning or later at the same time. Pretty cool.

  • Wheels

    dammit

  • Mikhel

Ichiro as a pinch runner, so… I forecast he won’t steal the base; JoeG uses his PR to go and sit at 1st base for IF somebody gets a hit afterwards.

  • forensic

Flaherty: “Heath Bell struggling a little bit lately.”

So, ‘lately’ now encompasses a 2 1/2 year time span…

    • Mikhel

Even a bit more, in SD he got hit hard a lot of times, but the sea breeze at PetCo helped him a lot. Lots of balls batted to RF and CF died.

  • forensic

    Whew, that was close.

  • robbiewho?

    nice Ichiro

  • nycsportzfan

Is Beltran in this game today? Seems like his heads in the clouds.

    • Havok9120

Or he’s just having a bad game.

But it being a mental problem does make for a much better story.

    • Mikhel

He left it at that midget wall where he crashed himself the other day…

    • jjyank

Having a bad day at the plate now means that his head isn’t in the game. Okay then.

      • nycsportzfan

        I asked. I didn’t say.

  • nycsportzfan

    Ichiro is safe!

  • Wheels

    safe.

    • Wheels

      shit, nope.

  • BigBlueAL

Real close, looks like he might be safe. What do YES replays show??

    • Wheels

      looks out.

    • forensic

The glove got down on his foot pretty clearly before he touched the base.

  • nycsportzfan

I’m starting to get a headache from this game.lol

  • Hall and Nokes

Overturn is bad for the Yankees BUT it means Joe West is wrong. This is a tough one, folks.

  • forensic

Shit, that’s going to be overturned.

    • nycsportzfan

      No, its not.

      • nycsportzfan

        Fuck,it might be.

  • jjyank

    God damn it.

  • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

Too close to call. They should have let it stand.

    • forensic

No way, that was pretty clearly out.

      • Havok9120

Agreed. Two angles showed him clearly out.

      • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

        I don’t agree.

  • BigBlueAL

Shit, looks like he is out with a freeze frame on the Rays broadcast.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    He’s out

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Heath F@cking Bell

  • Wheels

    Ugh.

  • robbiewho?

and the Yanks continue to make scrubs look like all-stars

  • nycsportzfan

Nice hitting Yanks. You guys are awesome. God, i’d like to smash Brian Roberts right now.

  • nycsportzfan

We can’t even score off Heath Bell..lol Are best hitter gets K’d looking against Heath Bell.lol A fucking fan could hit Heath Bell.lol

Ok, i’m flat out cranky now. Taking deep breath.

    • Truther

Hey maaaan 4/20 it up and everything will be fine.

      • jjyank

Just awful, awful trolling. I’m just disappointed.

      • Havok9120

To think we used to have guys like Big Member jerking our chains.

        Now we’re stuck with you.

        • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

At least Rose was entertaining with his dissertation on Ohio not being a state.

  • robbiewho?

come on Tex…blast one, this is Heath Bell for fuck sake

  • forensic

And for everyone who still complains about the Yankees not ‘pitching to the shift’, just watch Tex’s AB’s more carefully. Every AB, most of the pitches are on the outer part despite them playing him to pull. You don’t pitch him inside just because you’re shifting.

    • Mikhel

Not every batter is the same, Teixeira will always try to pull the ball, if you pitch him away he’ll most likely hit a pop fly, if he gets to pull that pitch, it’ll be a weak grounder. That’s why there was talk he was going to begin to just put the bat on the ball to slap hits to where he is being pitched (like David Ortíz began to do a couple of years ago), if they’re giving you a lot of space and pitches in the outer part of the plate, then take those opportunities to try and get slap singles or even doubles down the line.

      • forensic

And the batters who aren’t the same as him don’t get shifted on as much. The reason all the shifts are happening is because there are a lot of guy like him who try to pull everything, and if they do that on outside pitches then it’s going to be an easy grounder.

        • Mikhel

Yup. But I don’t know if its because they are too stubborn to change their approach, don’t do it because it could “destroy” (so to speak) their power swing or… I don’t know.

I remember when Cecil Fielder came to the NYY and he used to pull everything but with the Yanks he changed his approach and began to slap hits, his career was basically over after playing half a season next year in NY because he no longer was viewed as a threat (or so I thought back then, I could very well be wrong). I can’t remember if if was Watson the hitting instructor back then.

  • nycsportzfan

I’d let Sori go now as well. Why the heck not?

  • BigBlueAL

We need 3 more walks in a row to score a run.

  • No 2013 again

Horrible offense. Cant even hit the corpse of heath bell

    • nycsportzfan

Horrible offense, horrible defense. I swear its pretty much we look like studs on Pineda and Tanaka days, and then its a crap shoot the rest of the time.

  • OldYanksFan

    Wow…. blown opportunity.

  • alittleblackegg

Did Heath Bell just get Tex out with three fastballs?

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

This is leaning towards forensic being correct.

  • forensic

Holy shit, these guys look like the Bad News Bears out there.

    • nycsportzfan

Offense and defense. I’m actually happy we have a day off tomorrow, as I need a break from them, myself.

  • 28 this year

Need some more fielding practice apparently

  • mustang

What the fuck was everyone saying about Anna playing SS

    • mustang

      Ryan heal fast!!!

      • Wheels

Heard he had a setback now with his hamstring.

        • mustang

Yankees’ Brendan Ryan suffers setback in recovery, Joe Girardi says

          Your not kidding!!!!

          FUCK ME

          • forensic

Probably just a few days to a week setback.

Not that it matters, he’s not much help either way anyway.

            • Mikhel

Is Brendan’s second name Pavano or Brown?

            • mustang

“Not that it matters, he’s not much help either way anyway.”

Did you see the Anna play?

  • YankeeDJW

This infield could be historically bad.

  • Wheels

    D’oh!

  • WAjohn

    Oh boy

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

They pinch-runner for Jeter and the PR gets thrown out stealing and the defensive replacement makes an error.

    Dumb luck, but geez.

  • WAjohn

    Helluva throw mccann

  • jjyank

    Suck it, Myers.

  • Havok9120

I don’t know if Jeter makes that play, but…sheesh. You use a PR, let 10 pitches go by before the steal, and then the replacement botches a play. Ick.

    • mustang

Jeter makes that play. Range is bad yes but right in front him its almost automatic.

      • Havok9120

        That’s my thinking as well.

  • nycsportzfan

Destined to see Bryan Mitchell today, I guess.lol

    • forensic

Girardi loves using Claiborne for multiple innings. Of course, he refused to see that that’s when Claiborne started running into a lot of his problems last season.

  • nycsportzfan

    Sit the fuck down Myers!

  • mustang

Dude they been calling that ALLLLLLL DAY!!!!

might not be strike but it is today

    LOL

  • Havok9120

    Wow. Half a mile.

  • Havok9120

    ‘Dat strikezone.

    Sigh.

  • BigBlueAL

Rays broadcasters wanted a replay because they thought Myers mightve been safe. Replay showed out by a country mile. Screw them lol.

    • YankeeDJW

So happy I don’t have to listen to them anymore.

    • Havok9120

I was afraid he was out by so much he’d be able to slide around the tag, but I can’t see the umps overturning that.

  • Kosmo

nice change up for the K

  • WAjohn

    Good start boys. let’s go

  • Eric Young

Am I reading this right that there are no remaining offensive players on the bench, and only Mitchell and Betances in the pen?

    • Winter

Johnson’s still available off the bench, right?

      • forensic

Yup, but Betances wouldn’t be used anytime before Mitchell, so he might as well not even be out there.

    • Havok9120

      It looks that way.

      • Eric Young

KJ’s not listed on gameday for some reason. thanks.

  • WAjohn

If Brett doesn’t bunt, we are wrong.

    • Winter

With Brian Roberts hitting behind him? Naw.

      • WAjohn

I like my chances to have roberts or Mccann to get a base hit vs expecting Gardner to not pop it up or hit a ground ball at someone

  • Tom

    Why are they bunting?

  • forensic

    Geez…

Trying to give away an out? Yuck.

    These bunt attempts? Double Yuck.

  • robbiewho?

the guy with speed that can’t bunt…useless

    • jjyank

      Gardner is far from useless.

  • forensic

Geez Gardner, what the hell was that? You can’t play chicken with the low part of the zone with this ump.

  • Wheels

    Not what we needed Brett.

  • mustang

    Have him STEEEEEAL!!

  • mustang

I don’t know if its because i been on this site for so long but now I HATE BUNTING!!!

  • Winter

I know Gardner is terrified of stealing for some reason, but he has to run here.

  • BigBlueAL

    Bunting with 2 strikes???

  • mustang

    Bunting with 2 strikes

    ITS KILLING ME

  • Havok9120

    Steal. All the steals.

  • Havok9120

Roberts is just getting robbed at this point.

Good sign for the long term, but now? Just annoying.

    • nycsportzfan

Yeah, but he deserves it, as its his error, that has us playing still right now.

  • jjyank

Ahh shit. Gardner had that if he didn’t get the red light.

  • forensic

Wow, I want to see another angle on that. I would’ve liked see Thompson take a shot on that.

    Geez, he scores EASILY!!!

Thompson just can’t seem to get much right over there.

    • forensic

      *no ‘p’s in there.

  • WAjohn

Well if he steals he scores without a doubt. and that’s why you bunt

  • Havok9120

    He woulda made it.

  • nycsportzfan

I think Rob Thompson just fucked up. Hopefully Ells makes it a moot point. 0-5 so far. Ouch!

  • WAjohn

Honestly, watching gardner sit at first is more annoying than watching the anti gun folks spew their nonsense

    • Havok9120

      0_o

    • Wheels

      yeah ok

    • jjyank

      Wow.

    • Truther

      TRUE But it’s very close.

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Yea, always a good topic to bring up on this site.

  • Eric Young

Gardner’s on a pace for under 20 steals this year.

  • BigBlueAL

Holy crap for a second I thought Gardner was going to try to score.

  • forensic

They sound so shocked for some reason. Clueless as usual.

There’s a base open, even if it’s not 1st base. Who would you rather face, Ellsbury or Anna???

That’s why Thomson needs to send Gardner.

  • mustang

No way he would of been out

    • nycsportzfan

I don’t know. Looking at the replay, he was about 15steps past 3rd and the throw was in to 2nd.

      • jjyank

The throw went into second. He would have been safe pretty easily.

        • mustang

And it was in the second basement hands

          • mustang

            Brett wasn’t even half way

            • jjyank

Because he stopped. I’d be willing to bet he scores.

  • BigBlueAL

We need a HBP or BB lol.

  • Tom

Time for Anna to “pierzynski” one.

Anything inside he best be dipping that elbow into it.

  • BigBlueAL

IBB Ellsbury to pitch to Anna??

  • Eric Young

Gardy not stealing = it comes down to Anna.

  • Havok9120

    You’re killing me Rob Thompson.

    • nycsportzfan

      In hindsight, it worked out.

      • Havok9120

        Which I’m happy- ecstatic!- about.

That does not mean it was the correct call.

  • mustang

    For Beltran!!!!!

    • mustang

      sorry

  • mustang

The Joe move that keeps on paying…SMH

    • mustang

      SHUT ME UP ANNNA

      • mustang

        Thank you!!!!

  • BigBlueAL

    Good at-bat at least.

  • jjyank

    DEANNA

  • nycsportzfan

    Anna baby!!!lol

  • BigBlueAL

    He walked him!!!!

  • Wheels

    yes!

  • jjyank

That was a hell of an at bat.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Nice eye, Anna. Way to work this AB

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Yes!

  • forensic

    WHEW!!!!!

    Nice Anna!

  • Tom

Anna sucks! Should’ve sent him down…

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Shut the fuck, Maddon. Quit whining, you bitch.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Up

  • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

    The Maddon move backfires. Joygasm!

  • YankeeDJW

Joe Maddon is such a goon sometimes. You got yourself in the mess; don’t bark at the umpires.

    Great at-bat by Anna.

  • BigBlueAL

Good check swing, even the Rays announcers admitted he held up.

    • nycsportzfan

      And replay confirms.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

They’re back-tracking on it now. The call came in from upstairs.

  • Yangeddard Solarte

BALL 4! BALL 4! ANNA HAS WALKED IN THE GO AHEAD RUN!

  • forensic

Just four or five more of those guys and we might feel ok with this being in Claiborne’s or Mitchell’s hands

    • nycsportzfan

Do you push Betances at this point?

      • forensic

No way, as little faith as I have in Claiborne or Mitchell, I have less faith in a very tired Betances being able to find the strike zone.

        • nycsportzfan

Now, I def woulden’t. Sori coming through gives me enough faith to go with Claiborne and Mitchell at this point.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    YES!!!

  • mustang

    Sorry Joe

    Sorry Anna

Sorry Mom for taking that dollar

  • WAjohn

    Carlos!!!##

  • Yangeddard Solarte

    CARLOS! THERE IS YOUR DAGGER!!!!!!!

  • BigBlueAL

Frustrating game has turned into a potentially great win lol.

  • forensic

Ok Beltran, PLEASE add some here.

    • mustang

      THIS!!!

    • forensic

      YES!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wheels

    Finish them!

    • Wheels

      yes!

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    How didn’t that hit him?

  • nycsportzfan

Come on Beltran, open this up.

  • mustang

    YESSSSSSS!!!!!

  • jjyank

    BELTRAN!

  • nycsportzfan

Beltran comes through! Like I said, Beltran looks great today. Hehehe!

    • Havok9120

      ietc

  • BigBlueAL

I think this lead might now be Claiborne proof.

  • Wheels

    Happy Easter.

    • mustang

      THIS!!!!!

  • nycsportzfan

Beltran is 1st to get to double digit ribs for Yanks.

  • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

YEAH! THAT’S WHAT U’M TALKN ‘BOUT!

  • Tom

By the way…. kind of lost in this was a pretty good move by Joe after the Ichiro PR move.

He could have channeled his NL managing days and did a double switch; Ichiro at RF in for Jeter at SS, Anna at SS for Beltran in the #3 spot.

Instead he just directly subbed in Anna for Ichiro and kept the better bat in in RF. (which was the exact right move)

And as I type this… Beltran!

    • Mikhel

Yeah, the first double move is used in one sided games… like in yesterday’s game.

  • YankeeDJW

    I still don’t trust a 3 run lead.

    • Wheels

How bout a 4 run lead?

      • YankeeDJW

        Now we’re talking.

  • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

    Dean Anna 2015!

  • mustang

    mustang says:
    April 20, 2014 at 12:59 am
It was only yesterday in the 5 inning that the Yankees were up 4-2 on a 5 game winning streak with the bullpen rested rotation healthy and Tex and D-Rob round the corner.
Next day bullpen burn down a starter and on the edge of losing 3 out 4 to division rival.
CAN NEVER EVER EVER EVER HAVE TOO MUCH PITCHING!!!!!!!!
    Especially the starting kind.

BUT with that said they win tomorrow split the series have an off day to rest the bullpen and their young studs line-up vs. Boston.
    Its game 18 of 162

    LOVE BASEBALL!!!!!!!!!!

My wife calls baseball a mens soap opera she solo right.

      • mustang

        sooo right

        • Mikhel

I know women as die-hard fans of baseball as men, or even more… and maaaaan it is BEAUTIFUL!! That’s why I love going to my local team’s games, lots of pretty girls yelling at the umpire for a bad call while gulping industrial amounts of beer :’)

          • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

            who is your local team?

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Put up 10 more runs. Break their powder blue spirit

  • forensic

    Keep scoring! I want 16!!!

    Or not…

    • nycsportzfan

Hey, if we can hold on 5-1, then we beat them 10-2 and 5-1 in our 2 wins. Evens things up alittle bit.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

  • alittleblackegg

RBIs against Josh Lueke. It’s a beautiful thing.

    • vicki

      hell yes.

  • nycsportzfan

God, that Sprint Framily commercial is fucking stupid.

    • forensic

      Framily

Come on, can’t you even spell ‘family’ rig…, oh wait…

      :-)

      • Mikhel

I hate that commercial… but I do like the girl that acts like the mom (I think she used to be in the tv show “Arrested Development” quite a few years ago).

  • TheRealGreg

    Can you imagine this?

Two blowout losses and now an extra innings game? Bullpen will definitely need this day off.

Nuno came up big and will probably be our fifth starter

  • WAjohn

Please tell me we have someone (Mitchell) warming up

    • TheRealGreg

      He is

  • mustang

and the soap opera goes on

  • forensic

Ugh, great way to start Claiborne…

    • nycsportzfan

How about BB’ing Molina on 4pitches??lol You can’t script this stuff.

  • vicki

wow, seattle. swept by the marlins.

    • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

cano already planning his october vacation for the next ten years

  • forensic

Walking Jose Molina on 4 pitches? Yuck.

At least he clogs the bases a little…

  • Yangeddard Solarte

And Preston just walked Molina on 4 pitches.

  • WAjohn

    One more. That was smoked

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Yikes.

    One more out, come onnnnnnnn

  • nycsportzfan

4 pitch walk to Molina?? Are you freaking kidding me??

  • WAjohn

    Uh, Joe? You there buddy?

  • BigBlueAL

From frustration to elation. Crazy game but in the end a great win.

  • Wheels

    Spark em up.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

    Yankees win!

    Hey, forensic….. ;)

    THANK YOU!!!!

All that and they get a split.

    LOL

    • nycsportzfan

      Exactly!lol

    • Chip Rodriguez

a whole lot of shuffles to/from the minors, a run differential of -9 for these four games, a serious injury – and a split.

      Awesome.

      And whew.

  • nycsportzfan

Yes!!!! Good work Claiborne!! Thank god, we didn’t lose this one!

  • mustang

    Happy Easter to all!!!

    • nycsportzfan

      Agreed. I’m out!

    • Matzahman

Happy Passover to all as well!!!!

A split is a great outcome in this house of horrors. Have their two aces lined up against Boston and will get their closer back as well.

      • FIPster Doofus

        Tragicana Field.

  • Mikhel

    Happy easter everybody!!!

I’m gonna look for my eggs! (in spanish that sounds funny :3 ).

  • Tom

Great job by the bullpen , 7IP, 3 hits, 1 unearned run

And of course Nuno who threw 5 scoreless. Have to assume he takes Nova’s spot in the rotation? (at least for a while)
