Update: Yankees call up Cesar Cabral

Yankees' rotation is dominating the strike zone early in 2014
Game Eight: Beat the Birds

Tuesday: Cabral has officially been called up, the Yankees announced. Lots and lots of lefties.

Monday: Via George King: The Yankees are planning to call up left-hander Cesar Cabral to replace David Robertson, who was placed on the 15-day DL with a Grade 1 groin strain earlier today. Three lefties in the bullpen is not ideal, especially since two of them (Cabral and Matt Thornton) are pure specialists, so Vidal Nuno is going to have to take on some more responsibility. He figures to be asked to get both righties and lefties out now.

Interesting, but since he’s on the 40-man, it is understandable. As a lefty specialist, I was leaning towards him over Nuno, but Nuno does have the ability to be more than just a lefty specialist due to his experience starting.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

Both the idea of going balls out and calling Greene up or going with the three-lefty look were intriguing to me.

If we’re going to be this short-changed, might as well find an advantage in other ways.

    Welcome back, Stairs.

    • Alkaline

Hmm. How did Robertson hurt his groin again?…

          So much lurking

      • Havok9120

        He’ll never tell.

Some stairs have longer falls than others, after all.

  • forensic

That seems not really worth it. Replace a first baseman with a 3rd catcher. Replace a closer with a 3rd lefty. Doesn’t make much sense to me.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

The product of a much less than optimal 40-man roster construction.

    • The Great Gonzo

In fairness Cervelli IS getting the start at 1st base today… Sooooooo yeah

  • bpdelia

It’s early and not a huge deal but if Claiborne wasn’t going to get called up in this situation he should probably be dfa’d in favor of canzler or another corner infielder. Having 5 catchers on the roster is obviously not ideal but I understand its necessary.

But having 3 on the 25 man without an actual first baseman is a problem.

Seems like the best move is canzler for clairborne and then canzler for Romine.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I don’t understand the news for Canzler if Johnson has been playing a serviceable first and Sizemore could be an ideal partner for both Solarte (?!) at third and Roberts at second, and has a 5/1 opt-out to boot.

    • Fernando

Between Cabral and Claiborne, the choice is Cabral. He pitched much better in Spring Training than Claiborne did. I would have preferred to see Herndon, but for just two weeks made sense to not DFA anyone.

      • vicki

truth. but guy’s point stands, that if claiborne didn’t get the call NOW, he’s just taking up space.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’d argue that Turley, Campos, and about half the catchers take up more space, but yeah, if you’re not going to be a shuttle-running reliever, that space could be used elsewhere so that we don’t need to replace our first baseman with a third catcher next time.

  • ALZ

How did they get around the rule 5 draft pick rules with Cabral?

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

I’m pretty sure he cleared waivers at some point and that was the end of it.

      • forensic

Yup, he cleared waivers in June, then was re-added to the 40-man for a September call-up last year.

  • scooter10

I second the motion of adding Sizemore by DFAing Clabirone and sending Romine to Scranton. Limited sample size (3 games) but hitting .556/.636/.667 and has experience at 2B/3B. Plus he has a May 1st opt-out. Might as well see what we have. I think KJ will continue to play 1B until Teixeira.

    • Looser Trader Droids Kenobi FotD™

I think what you outline is only a matter of time, especially because I have a sneaking suspicion ( based on nothing but my own irrational mind) that Teix is going to be out even longer than expected.

  • Mickey Scheister

Sizemore should have been called up in lieu of Romine, who’s basically worthless as a third catcher. This hamstrings the team. Don’t mind the Cabral move if it means Nuno is put in more high leverage situations.

  • mike

cervelli can now be used to pinch hit or dh.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Still would rather have Sizemore there. You’ve got about 13 position players on your 25-man roster. Three don’t need to be catchers. Not in 2014.

      • nyyankfan_7

I think they Sizemore to have more than 3 games under his belt to see what they have.

If that roster spot is going to sit the bench most of the next 2 weeks why waste it on Sizemore who they want to see get regular at-bats? Solarte is on fire and Roberts has been doing fine so Sizemore would be called up to sit the bench. Let him play everyday for another week and then call him up if he seems worth it.

If they have so little confidence in Claiborne then why didn’t they DFA him instead of Nunez?

    • nyyankfan_7

perhaps they have more confidence in him producing in the future, just not this week considering the awful spring he just had.

  • Yangeddard Soly

And now Joe has triple barrel lefties at his disposal in that bullpen. Just imagine how many matchups he can use to close out the ballgame. I think today’s going to be an issue for the pen. He may be hesitant to use Warren and Kelly 3 days straight so Thorton is the closer and guys like BGDP, Delin and Eduardo Nuno are going to have to step up.

    • mt

Kelly now officially out for today; have not seen any mention of Warren being out today but, you are right, he may be very well out also given his recent use.

I guess it is Matt Thornton today as closer (!) or maybe Dellin (depending on number and quality of righty batters in any 9th inning save situation – not very good.

How about Yanks score some heavy runs today so it is a nice easy non-save game :-)

  • The Great Gonzo

What does the binder say about the Triple LOOGY approach? Maybe its in anticipation of marathon games with Boston and needing the LOOGY depth there as well? I don’t have anything to back this outside of pure unadulterated speculation, but yeah.

  • John Duci

Everyone calling for Sizemore but he’s not the answer. Cervelli is way better to have in the lineup. Sizemore sucks.

    • TWTR

Which Sizemore? v2011.1 was pretty good. Is he that player or will be again? Who knows?

    • Mr. Roth

      Great analysis there, Duci.

  • John Duci

Nova is going the distance today no worries about the pen boys

Is it the right push off leg/groin or left plant leg for DRob? May have missed that written/discussed elsewhere. With his stride/extension to home plate, (which Mike has reviewed before) not a surprising injury. Better rest it well and not re-injure by coming back too soon.
