It’s not a mystery why Yankee CFs have low UZR. It’s the exact same reason why the Yankee LF has a high UZR. Three of the four components of UZR are based on how many plays they make compared to the average at their position. The Yankees have a particularly rangy LFer, so he “steals” plays from the CF.
On Refsnyder as a bad defensive 2B– certainly that was true a year ago. But is there evidence he has not improved dramatically as he has gained experience? By one metric– errors– he has improved enormously; his errors are way, way down, to the point where he is pretty solid in that area. Obviously that only measures one aspect of his play; but is there concrete evidence the other aspects have not improved as well? I’m genuinely curious.
