Yankees call up Scott Sizemore, claim Wade LeBlanc

The Yankees have called up infielder Scott Sizemore from Triple-A Scranton, the team announced. Zoilo Almonte was sent down in a corresponding move. Sizemore, 29, has hit .265/.333/.361 (96 wRC+) with the RailRiders this year. The Yankees will face four lefty starters in the next seven games and six lefties in the next dozen games. I’m guessing that’s why the righty hitting Sizemore is up.

In other news, the Yankees also claimed left-hander Wade LeBlanc off waivers from the Angels. That’s French for David Huff. Michael Pineda was transferred to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot. He’s already been on the disabled list for a month and just suffered a setback, so yeah. The 29-year-old LeBlanc made a spot start for the Halos the other day (four runs in 6.1 innings) and has a 3.69 ERA (4.46 FIP) in 53.2 Triple-A innings this year. His best attribute is that he’s not Alfredo Aceves. I’m guessing Aceves will get the axe when LeBlanc joins the team in a day or two.

I suppose Scott Sizemore might also be less of a butcher at 1B than KJ.

No complaints about LeBlanc, though I was hoping Venditte would get a call up. Perhaps later though.

    • ArchStanton says:

Yeah, me too. Venditte has worked his tail off (granted, most ballplayers do). It’d be nice to see him get a shot at some point.

    • ALZ says:

Let’s hope so. KJ destroys the defense everytime he plays. When they put him at 1B he is subpar. When he is at 3B is just awful.

You could’ve also said “French for Alfredo Aceves” but, either way, brilliant.

  4. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Against LHP this year:
    Roberts: 66 wRC+
    Solarte 80 wRC+
    Johnson 85 wRC+

They can certainly use some IF improvement against LHP. May as well give Sizemore a try.

  5. Chris says:

Any chance Kelly Johnson gets axed if they sign morales??…. Kelly has shown nothing at the plate and his glove has been horrible too…

    • Chip Rodriguez says:

Almost certain that Kelly gets the chop if that happens. Wonder if Morales will be asked to try out 3B.

    • rbibaseball says:

kind of hard to show anything when the corpse of Brian Roberts keeps getting time at second.

      • mitch says:

There was a time when I thought Johnson should get more ABs, but he’s been given a pretty fair opportunity with Tex out and has been just as mediocre as Roberts.

  6. Dr. Martin van Nostrand says:

you know what’s weird? My posts keep on having a time stamp two minutes earlier than what my computer says, and it keeps on jumping posts.

It’s 4:05 on my system when I type this. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if it jumps above Chris and/or NP&H’s posts. Lets see.

    • Dr. Martin van Nostrand says:

that time the timestamp was about two minutes later. This is wonky enough that even a deranged lunatic like me (Dr. Martin van Nostrand) am left baffled.

    • nyyankfan_7 says:

You know what’s really weird? A new study shows that if your hand is bigger than your face it means you are immune to lung cancer; be sure to do this test in front of a very good friend so they can get the proper measurement.

  7. The Other Matt says:

“Wade LeBlanc … That’s French for David Huff.” Safe to say, Mike you’ve just made my day.

  8. Tanaka got AL pitcher of the month, sweet.

    As for Wade LeBlanc, WHY?!

  9. Cool Lester Smooth says:

    Sizemore’s got a 96 wRC+, not 29.

  10. Cuso says:

    “That’s French for David Huff.”

  11. Pinedamaybegreata (formerly Monterowasdinero) says:

Exciting moves. How is ARod doing in those games he’s been playing across the street at McCombs Dam Park or whatever they call it these days?

  12. Zach says:

Since Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts are bad at defense, replacing them with Zelous Wheeler and Jose Pirela can’t hurt.

It is hard to know whether or not they can hit in MLB but it would be nice if they were able to join Solarte’s Minor Leaguers to save Yankees’ sorry butt club.

    • Mike Axisa says:

Yes, it can hurt. It hurt about a thousand times worse. Example: Pretty much everyone they called up last year.

Johnson needs to play more at a position he is actually familiar with. He has no chance to be productive with this once or twice a week at first base nonsense.

      • Cool Lester Smooth says:

Not to mention that KJ is a fine defensive second baseman, much better than Pirela, for example.

      • Chip Rodriguez says:

Ah yes, how soon (easily) we forget the likes of Luis Cruz, Jayson Nix and Youkilis at 3B.

      • Deathstroke Heathcott says:

The “can’t be any worse” argument is the worst one to be parroted around RAB in a long time, especially coming off a year in which we saw first-hand, yes, it can be much worse.

  13. Roy Munson says:

“In other news, the Yankees also claimed left-hander Wade LeBlanc off waivers from the Angels. That’s French for David Huff”

Hysterical … one of your best ever, if not the best

  16. TWTR says:

Sizemore may be limited, but that may still be an improvement over Roberts, who should be DFA’d.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Maybe a platoon. It’s unlikely Sizemore will be any better, and he may be worse, against RHP.

  17. Tom says:

    Jose Veras was just DFA’d.

His #’s aren’t great this year, but I’d rather see the Yankees take a shot on him. I wonder if he will be dealt in the DFA period or will clear.

  18. Wolfgang's Fault says:

Sizemore’s playing 3b and Solarte’s moved to 2b. Good chance this is how they’re going to go w/Sizemore and Johnson platooning at 3b and Solarte permanently moved to 2b. Good chance Roberts will probably be released upon the return of Beltran &/or Cervelli. I’ll hate to see him go as I always liked him as a player in his Oriole heyday. Dude can still play this game & he’s still got enough to help another club in need of a 2b. He’s still rusty & needs to play, but the Yankees don’t have the luxury of waiting for him under the circumstances.

    • Deep Thoughts says:

I sadly agree. He does have 2 triples in a game, and he’s a tough at-bat most of the time. But the noodle arm is hard enough to take on grounders he reaches without factoring in the misses and drops.

It was tough to see Cano back in his old stomping grounds wearing the wrong jersey. Breaking up is hard to do.

  19. Another Guy Named Mike says:

Eric Jagielo hit another homer in his previous game. He’s the 3B of the future, let’s start the future tomorrow!

  20. Jason says:

Hey, Yanks just can’t pass up another Wade. There’s been a real hole on this club since Corey has been gone.
