2014 Midseason Grades: The Rotation

Some notes, including a few promotions. It’s that time of year:

  • 3B Eric Jagielo and LHP Ian Clarkin have been activated off the High-A Tampa DL and Low-A Charleston DL, respectively, the teams announced. Jagielo missed more than a month with an oblique issue while Clarkin missed two weeks with a sprained ankle.
  • RHP Brady Lail and LHP Caleb Smith were both promoted from Charleston to High-A Tampa, the River Dogs announced. Matt Kardos says LHP Francisco Rondon and RHP Diego Moreno are going down from Triple-A Scranton to Double-A Trenton.
  • In case you missed it yesterday, OF Jake Cave, LHP Jacob Lindgren, and RHP Luis Severino were all promoted as well.

Triple-A Scranton is off until tomorrow for the All-Star break. The International League beat the Pacific Coast League by the score of 7-3. Here’s the box score.

  • 2B Jose Pirela: 0-1, 1 R, 2 BB — started the game and batted second, played five innings … he was the only Yankees farmhand elected to the game

Double-A Trenton is off until tomorrow for the All-Star break. The West Division beat the East Division by the score of 5-2. Here’s the box score.

  • LF Ben Gamel: 0-3, 1 K — started and batted second, played five innings
  • PH-C Gary Sanchez: 0-2, 2 K — entered the game in the sixth innings
  • DH Peter O’Brien: 0-4, 1 K — started as the cleanup hitter and played the entire game
  • LHP Tyler Webb: 0.2 IP, zeroes, 2 K — eight pitches, seven strikes … got the final out of the sixth and the first out of the seventh

High-A Tampa (3-2 loss to Palm Beach)

  • SS Cito Culver: 1-4, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • 1B Greg Bird: 0-4, 3 K

  • RF Aaron Judge: 2-4 — 10-for-26 (.385) in his last seven games

  • RF Mark Payton: 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 BB, 2 K
  • SS Tyler Wade: 3-5, 1 R, 1 RBI — 12-for-33 (.364) in his last eight games

  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-4, 1 2B
  • LF Michael O’Neill: 0-3, 2 K — ejected after arguing balls and strikes a check swing in the sixth
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB
  • RHP Gabe Encinas: 2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 26 of 43 pitches were strikes (60%)
  • LHP Omar Luis: 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HBP, 3/3 GB/FB — 27 of 44 pitches were strikes (61%) … 24/27 K/BB in 39 innings

Low-A Charleston Game Two was postponed because Game One took forever, thanks in part to the lengthy rain delay. They’ll play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Short Season Staten Island (7-3 win over Williamsport)

  • C Luis Torrens: 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB — 22-for-52 (.423) with five doubles, two triples, and a homer during his 13-game hitting streak

Both Rookie GCL Yanks teams were rained out. They will play doubleheaders tomorrow.
