Yankees place Beltran on 7-day concussion DL, recall Solarte

The Yankees have placed Carlos Beltran on the seven-day concussion disabled list and recalled Yangervis Solarte from Triple-A Scranton, the team announced. Beltran suffered two small facial fractures during a fluke batting practice accident yesterday — he hit a ball off the cage and it ricocheted into his face. He will be eligible to return after the All-Star break.

Solarte, 27, was sent down last week and went 12-for-20 (.600) with three doubles and a triple in five games for the RailRiders. It would be totally awesome if that got him going and he comes back to hit like he did earlier in the season. Beltran has not played since Sunday due to a  minor knee/hamstring problem, and he also missed about a month due to the bone spur in his elbow earlier this year. The 37-year-old is hitting .216/.271/.401 (79 wRC+) with nine homers in 61 games this season.

  1. Jorge Steinbrenner says:

Because, you know, getting hit in the goddamn face with a ball is toally a sign that you’re old and decrepid. It just would have bounced right off Rob Refsnyder’s face.

In other news, the Solarte dream is still alive.

    • Farewell Mo says:

No getting hit in the face isn’t a sign of being old and decrepit.

A wOBA of .291, -0.8 fWAR, a 79wRC+ and a -25.6 UZR/150 at age 37 with missed time due to bone spurs in his elbow and a swollen knee is however irrefutable evidence of being old and decrepit.

Signing said player to a 3/$45 million at age 37 is pretty epic fuck up on Cashman’s part.

  2. TWTR says:

They are just delaying the inevitable with Beltran and paying the price, but good for Solarte that he gets a ML salary again.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner says:

He got hit in the face. What is the inevitable there, that his face will melt, ROTLA-style?

      • Craig says:

All I know is that if the ball hit Sizemore in the face it would have burst into a million pieces.

      • Preston says:

He’s still beating the drum about how he should have gotten elbow surgery.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner says:

History may prove him right, but I agree with modern medicine and going with the least restrictive option first.

          • TWTR says:

I don’t want to be right, I only want a productive Beltran. Since he returned from his extended “rest” on June 5th, here is his slashline:

            .192 .252 .365 .618

So while conservative treatment may be great for non-athletes, it hasn’t been able to rerun Beltran to being anything close to his former self.

        • RetroRob says:

I suspect he will have elbow surgery, in fact I have always assume he is, but not until after the season. There is no reason to do it now based on the recovery time.

      • TWTR says:

Um, the surgery for the elbow………

  3. Bill says:

All I know is that Solarte went down to AAA and went 12 for 20. At least he didn’t go down and sulk. Maybe he gets hot again.

    • Preston says:

All it means is that MiLB production does not equal MLB production (Zelous Wheeler is also proving this). Despite what the proponents of calling up org filler like Kyle Roller, Jose Pirela and Adonis Garcia would have you believe.

  4. scott says:

Just not Belts year in NY. Probably should have had elbow surgery and just taken the rest of the year off. Give him credit for trying to stay with the team and play through.

Unfortunately sometimes the baseball gods smack you in the face the ball and break your nose.

  5. RetroRob says:

    It’s neverending.

Hopefully the extra days will be good for his elbow and knee. I think he’s out of body parts to injury.

  6. scott says:

I think Solarte stays hot and up with the big league club. Carries the Yanks through a winning streak into the ASB.

  7. cooolbreeez says:

At least Beltran finally hit something.

  8. Daniel says:

Yadier out 8-12 weeks. Is there any help we are a match with the Cardinals in a trade? I don’t know what they have that we could use, but wouldn’t they be interested in J.R. Murphy?

  9. MB923 says:

    Somewhere….Eddard is screaming of joy.

  10. Yangeddard Solarte says:

GUESS WHO’S BACK!!!!!!!!!!! HOT AS A FIRECRACKER DOWN IN AAA AND NOW HE’LL CARRY THIS OFFENSE ONCE AGAIN. He should be here to stay, Kelly Johnson needs to go.

  11. LarryM Fl says:

The Yankees are getting younger as the old guys just fade onto the DL. Next up could be Brian Roberts ( not wishing him bad luck but he has played more games this year than in recent past) with Rysnyder taking his place at second.

This team is just a Peace Time Mash unit.

  12. Jorge Steinbrenner says:

Usually, at trainings and conferences, this is about the time where folks get a bit food coma-ish after lunch. Can someone check on Dr. Ahmad?

  13. Yangeddard Solarte says:

Soley probably steps into the clubhouse tonight and shouts, “Miss me yet?” They’ve really been struggling for consistent offense without him. This could be just as big as a midseason trade.

  14. Winter says:

Why not recall Billings so he’s an option for Sunday and just play with a short bench for a couple days?

    • ikl says:

Probably because Billings is a stricky garbage time / inning eater specialist. He isn’t even a particularly good AAA pitcher after 400+ innings at that level. For meaningful innings even Lereux is preferable if it comes to that.

    • Chip Rodriguez says:

he was just sent down. 10 day rule.

  15. Well, the NL Central got completely drained of two stars, Brandon Phillips and Yadier Molina both out 8-12 weeks with the same injury, torn thumb ligaments.

Am I the only one who finds it just humorous that both Yadier Molina and Brandon Phillips get the same injury 47 months to the day after their infamous brawl?

  16. Derek Jeter says:

I’d rather call this season a wash and at least watch some young kids play ball.

  17. Derek Jeter says:

Montefiore is getting its money worth advertising the “Yankees injury report”

  18. mustang says:

Brandon Phillips Suffers Torn Thumb Ligament

Yadier Molina Out Eight To Twelve Weeks With Torn Thumb Ligament

This league is falling apart without PED

  19. EndlessJose says:

I love Beltran and unlike Teixeira, Granderson,Swisher and Cano he can hit in the postseason(which we won’t get this year) but it’s sad him and the Yankees forcing himself to play.

Bone Spur that needs surgery,Knee drained, two factures in his face and now a concussion.Give him the surgery for his elbow and if we make it to the post season than he will be alright.

  20. Pinedamaybegreata(formerlyMonterowasdinero) says:

Just heard on ESPN that the world champion Red Sawx started 5 rookies yesterday. Things change quickly. Imagine if we started 5 rookies. Refsnyder, Wheeler, Almonte, Murphy and Pirela.

  21. hornblower says:

Ref. homered in the first tonight. Kelly Johnson will be home for the All-star break.

  22. Naved says:

How come you don’t rip on Beltran like you did for Soriano? Beltran is an absolute joke right now. He is doing worst than Soriano.

  23. Jean says:

Just hope Beltran can stay health until we develop Judge to replace him and be RF for years…. looks like won’t work..
