Yankees claim Esmil Rogers off waivers from Blue Jays

By

The Yankees have claimed right-hander Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Blue Jays, the team announced. Brian Cashman says he will join the big league team and be available out of the bullpen for tomorrow’s series opener against the Red Sox. Scott Sizemore was released to clear a 40-man spot. No other roster move have been announced yet.

Rogers, 28, has a 6.97 ERA (5.41 FIP) in 20.2 innings for Toronto this season while going back and forth between Triple-A and MLB a few times. He owns a 5.59 ERA (4.45 FIP) in 396 career innings with the Jays, Indians, and Rockies, which is broken down into a 5.59 ERA (4.77 FIP) in 220.2 innings as a starter and a 5.60 ERA (4.04 FIP) in 175.1 innings as a reliever. The 29-year-old Sizemore made two brief cameos with the Yankees but was on the Triple-A Scranton disabled list at the time of his release.

  • nyy13

    YESS!!!!

    A guy with a 5+FIP!!!!

That’s why Cashman is considered one of the best GM in all of baseball.

Beltran, McCan’t and Tex are gonna hit .400 from now on and we would win the WS!!

    Thank God for Cashman!

I bet if Beane or Cherington were in the same position as Cashman with this team, they’d be selling Robertson right now.

But, we’re trying to make deals for marginal upgrades instead.

Than, Robertson will walk and next year, people will say “we were contending and we couldnt trade him!” just like they said about Cano/Granderson last year.

Thus continues the never-ending cycle of blidnly hoping to contend each yr without having a shred of honesty about the abilities of your current roster.

    • Mikhel

But you also gotta remember the biggest Yankees trade for a star in the trade deadline was… David Justice 14 years ago? Soriano helped last year but he was awful for the Cubs and they wanted to get rid of him.

Well there were also other acquisitions like Bobby Abreu in 2006 (8 years ago), Aaron Boone in 2004 who hit 0.125 AVG but also hit THAT HR.

In all, Yankee fans can only expect to add a piece that will be DFA’d in a week or so after the acquisition, contributing as much as an already in the system minorleaguer.

      • HansDavenport

Yes. Justice was just about my favorite trade deadline deal.

        • Yankee$

Abreu and Lidle was a great deal too.

    • nycsportzfan

Yeah, because teams right in the playoff hunt should always give up in late July and sell of there pieces. That makes a ton of sense.

Don’t you know that a gap of 3 games is impossible to make up over 55 games?

    Two thoughts:

    1) Your move Baltimore!

    2) The writeup on MLBTR is kind of unintentionally funny:

The 28-year-old Rogers has allowed 16 earned runs in 20 2/3 innings this season (6.97 ERA), but he posted a superior 4.77 ERA with 6.3 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and a 47.6 percent ground-ball rate in 137 2/3 innings for the Jays in 2013

I’m not sure “superior” is the best word to use next to a 4.77 ERA – I get what they were trying to say (‘better’) but it just kind of sounds funny

Evidence Cashman has been working hard.

    #vindication

  • The_humorisironic

    Jays fan here
Rogers could be a number 5 pitcher

    • Tom

I believe #5 has been retired.

      • Mikhel

        LOL

  • Bret The Hitman

Cashman didn’t just throw us a bone. He threw us the whole buffalo.

    • HansDavenport

      More like a boner.

our statistics team has dived into investigating cash’s latest move

    2010 whip 1.7
    2011 whip 1.9
    2013 ERA 4.77
    2014 20 IP 16 ER’s 28 hits

cash is a world class GM

  • nycsportzfan

I woulden’t even of wasted my time picking this guy up. If you gotta go to Esmil Rodgers, you mines well go to what ever you all ready have.

    • http://riveravenueblues blubber123

      might as well

      sorry

  • Jay D

Good buy low move. He’ll do better once he gets to wear the pinstripes.

  • Lehman College Rocks !!

the A’s gave away a nice pitcher for basically NOTHING

    http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/e.....r-sam-fuld

the outfielder they got was claimed by the twins earlier this year on waivers from the A’s

Yanks could have offered much more (ichiro for example) and gotten a nice pitcher

cash has let us down big time again

    • Evan3457

Fuld younger than Ichiro, hitting better than Ichiro and just as good a defender. Plus the Yanks have no one to replace Ichiro. Yet.
      Fuld was an expendable part.

Other than that, your idea is fine.

    • Steve (different one)

I honestly can’t tell if this is satire or not.

Is this the new realty here?

    • Dicka24

I dig your logic, it’s sound, but I don’t think Millone is a good fit in NY. He throws like 86 mph, and has a GB rate in the 30’s. Works in Oakland, would likely get ugly here in NY. That being said Millone > Ichiro.

  • nycsportzfan

Jim Bowden reported Yanks traded for Byrd and then it turned out he was dead wrong. Whats wrong with Bowden?

    • Evan3457

He stole the news from a false tweet from a false Joel Sherman Twitter accout.

      Imagine that.

    • HansDavenport

He’s not a well man. That’s what’s wrong with him.

    • Chris Z.

he sucks. he loves the nationals to death and will sing their praises. He acts like everything going on with their success is the direct result of his hard work. Look pal, if you were any good they wouldn’t have fired your dumb ass. he isn’t afraid to rip off peoples stories. I am glad he got it wrong.

  • telescopicmongoose

I think you’re all missing the point that there is nobody out there to realistically get. In order to really give this team a shot, we need something big. We don’t have the prospects to get something big and even if we did, the 2 best guys on the block were/are from within our division, so we couldn’t get them anyway.

What do you want/expect Cashman to do?

    • Mikhel

And what has been his excuse for the past 14 seasons? Maybe people are getting angry not because of this season’s inactivity but of the past 14 seasons, or roughly since Cashman has been the GM. He just throws bunches of cash at old, over the hill veteras with long contracts assured.

  • Mikhel

Here’s something to remember us the big trades on july 31 made by Cashman (which also indicates that Esmil will be the biggest name we’ll hear connected to the Yankees):

  • JonS

Gotta have a pitcher on the roster that just gives you that CC feeling…

  • Dicka24

Yanks reportedly entering the Price sweepstakes according to mlbtr. Scares me to think what they would have to give up.

  • nycsportzfan

Esmil Rodgers has never been good. Literally hes never been even remotely close to good or even solid for that matter. Honestly, your better off going with the Bryan Mitchells of the world.

  • Farewell Mo
  • no no Cano

For this I get mlb alerts on my dumbphone

  • nycsportzfan

Why did I waste my entire day on the net?lol Is it me or do we seem to strike out alot at the mid season deadline alot now?

But that said, I don’t nessecarily care if we make a trade but its seemed to be obvious to most we would, so I of course stay glued to the Net to see it happen. Ugh!

  • Roy Munson

It’s really is amazing, this teams reluctance to sell. Especially given what teams are getting for pitchers and they are holding on for what? to stay relevant and turn into the knicks/jets/raiders? They could get a nice haul for Kuroda and D-Rob, no?

This is a useless move. I would rather see Herndon, Daley, Montgomery, Jose Ramirez or Claiborne. Not even worth the 40 man spot.

  • Mike

I don’t get this one at all. Claiming a guy with an ERA over 6 and a career WHIP over 1.50.

  • Mike

I don’t get this at all. Claiming a guy with an ERA over 6 and a career WHIP of over 1.50?

  • Mike

Sorry for the double post. I wasn’t sure if the first one was accepted.
