Yankees call up Capuano and Goody, send down Pinder, designate Jones for assignment

As expected, the Yankees have made some moves to beef up their bullpen following last night’s 16-inning marathon loss. Both Chris Capuano and Nick Goody have been called up from Triple-A Scranton, the team announced. Branden Pinder was sent down and Garrett Jones was designated for assignment to clear roster spots. The Jones move also clears a 40-man spot for Capuano.

Pinder threw two innings and 20 pitches last night, taking the loss. Joe Girardi has thrown Pinder into some tight spots the last few days and he wound up with two losses on his record. Sucks. Jones re-signed with the team last week following Dustin Ackley‘s injury and did not get into a game. Bryan Mitchell, who threw 60 pitches last night and won’t be able available for a few days, is still with the team.

Capuano was scheduled to start for the RailRiders today, so he’ll be available for multiple innings tonight if necessary, which I really hope is not the case. He was able to get stretched out to 65 pitches in Triple-A after being designated for assignment two weeks ago. Capuano had a 6.97 ERA (5.00 FIP) in 31 innings for the Yankees before being cut and accepting his assignment to Triple-A.

Goody threw 16 pitches in Triple-A last night and was called up simply because there weren’t any other options. Caleb Cotham and Nick Rumbelow were both sent down last week and were unable to be recalled due to the ten-day rule. Goody was the only healthy call-up-able pitcher on the 40-man roster. He allowed one run in 1.1 innings with the Yankees earlier this year.

The Yankees have been talking about using a spot sixth starter at some point during this road trip and keeping Mitchell around will allow them to do that at some point. Had he been sent down, they wouldn’t have been able to call him up for ten days. Cutting Jones means the Yankees are down to a three-man bench, however. That will change once rosters expand in three weeks.

CC and maybe Capuano pitching tonight.
Indian hitters salivating like Pavlov’s dog!

    • Judge-mentioned_day_is_sept1

      We’LL tire them out tonight

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

        from salivating?

  • Re2pect

do we ride out 3 weeks with a 3 man bench or make a move? I cant remember the last time we had a 3 man bench for an extended period of time.

  • Luis Seveddardino

Capuano again. Insanity. Pure unadulterated insanity.

  • drewskie

Wat was the point of resigning g I Jones to a new contract and not even using him and then cut him again lol yanks are all messed up

  • imadominiCAN

poor jones…i feel bad for that guy… yet stephen drew and Brendan Ryan continue to be on this team…how stupid…

    • Judge-mentioned_day_is_sept1

      That’s baseball Susan

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

it’s gone past the stupid stage. It’s in the insane category

  • Judge-mentioned_day_is_sept1

Well, these moves are just what the Yankees needed. Season saved.

  • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

crapuano again? We’ve gone through this too long before he was sent down? What has he done in the minors to warrant another call up? Is he going to pitch crappy again? these guys are up and down up and down. It’s a shuttle ride back and forth and nothing really changes

    • Austinmac

He pitched great the last time out which does show the gap in talent level.

  • drewskie

The writing was on the wall for Jones. There were plenty of times Yankees needed a PH, but he was never used after returning.

  • JacobyWanKenobi

    Poor Garret Jones :(

    • TIME WILL TELL

Who backs up 1st base ?

      • Austinmac

Ryan. It’s always good to have a slugging first baseman on the bench.

        • JacobyWanKenobi

I thought you meant Ryan Howard at first, I almost threw up

          • Austinmac

Brendan probably has us all gagging a bit too.

        • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

I don’t think he’s ever played first base

          • Austinmac

This may be a first. I bet he hadn’t played much third either. McCann is the only other option unless Headley was moved over and Ryan plays third. That seems to weaken them in two spots.

            • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

Arod tried it but that’s didn’t work too well. McCann wasn’t great at it either. We could have added Swisher as back up and utility outfielder but he’s been injured most of the year

            • TIME WILL TELL

It’s only a matter of time and Ryan will be on the dl.

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

McCann can/can’t. Just hoping Teix doesn’t get hurt or doesn’t need a rest

      • NYCORNERSTONE

No, WHO is the name of the player that is on first.

          Mccann or arod

        • TIME WILL TELL

I thought Headley was all “banged up” with his legs , arm , head ? When we slump it’s 100% all in

  • Dan A.

If they have the same 3 man bench and the same second baseman come September 1st, they are not going to be in First place anymore.

  • Yankee Trader

” Cutting Jones means the Yankees are down to a three-man bench, however. That will change once rosters expand in three weeks.”
In three weeks the current offensive offense might have the Yankees in third place. But I suspect our GM is feverishly working the phones, maybe right now telling the Phillies why they don’t want to send Utley to the Giants in a few hours.

    • Austinmac

I very much doubt it. I think they will call up someone, probably Pirela who can fake infield and outfield.

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

he feverishly worked the phones at the TD(or at least that’s what he said) but what did that get us?

      • Yankee Trader

What do you mean? We got a super utility in Ackley, who injured his back immediately, his job, loading the bats onto the team bus, leaving Chicago for the airport!

    • Dave Guarnieri

Utley can refuse a trade (10/5). With the Giants, he’s a fill-in until Joe Panik comes off the DL which is soon, I know Utley is from the Bay Area, but I’d think he’d like to play everyday.

  • imadominiCAN

spare yourselves and don’t even watch tonight. It’s very likely to get ugly with CC “i get paid too much to be bumped from the rotation” Sebathia and wait for it… long man cris can’tpuano ready to come in when CC inevitably gives up 5 runs in two innings…

  • Luis Seveddardino

They pretty much already had a 3 man bench anyway. Jones never played a lick since they brought him back. No PH opportunities, no spelling one of the OFers, nothing. Wait until September and bring up Slade.

    • imadominiCAN

there were pinch hit opportunities every time Drew came up to bat after the 6th inning, they just didn’t use him for some stupid reason…

      • Austinmac

It’s Drew’s hit velocity. He is working on two years of bad luck. Read the back of one of his old baseball cards. Those the best answers I can come up with. Please pick one.

        • imadominiCAN

I think you mean “exit velo” lol

        • NYCORNERSTONE

Sign him again for next year ?

        • NYCORNERSTONE

To bad he can’t leave the team that fast

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

by then it might be too late, at least too late for the playoffs

  • Beauee

CC and Capuano? The reverse lock is ours!

  • Rick

Sure is tough to keep up with the Jones

    • renzostew

I thought Jones would be in the lineup tonight now he is gone.

  • YankeeFan™

    That sucks for Jones

  • JacobyWanKenobi

Watch CC and CC throw a combined no hitter

    • Austinmac

4 Cs leads to an average grade.

      • Yankee Trader

A C would be an improvement over last night’s game. 8 hits, 16 strikeouts, 3 walks.

  • Bob Loblaw

is toronto gonna lose again all year?

    • Rick

      Might not lose again ever.

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

      they don’t think so

    • ScottinSJ

They just need to keep this roll going for another week or two and then play decent ball thereafter. The division is theirs to lose right now.

    • Some Asshole

      No.

      • Tom

They’ve already wrapped up the division. No need to play any more games.

  • Pkyankfan69
  • Jman1213

    • NYCORNERSTONE

Not really Cashmans paying him 5 million has to get his value out of the deal , this is how cashman thinks.

          • Preston

No, it goes to show that you have no idea what he is doing. Which has nothing to do with whether Cashman does. He’s been part of managing a big league roster and all the intricacies that go with it for 20 years. You just said he’d never cut a player for monetary reasons that he in fact cut two weeks ago. Who’s the idiot here?

Yeah what the Yankees need are 2 more pitchers.Ellsbury should be joined on the bench with McCann. He has not hit in a month and Gardner who batted under .200 the last 2 months last year seems like he needs a few days off.

    • ScottinSJ

It’s actually just one more pitcher . . . and Capuano.

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

        that’s 1 and 1/8th pitchers

  • SteveNj

Poor Garret Jones! Hope he catches on somewhere

    • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

he’ll probably be a productive player on another team that needs him and plays him regularly

      • SteveNj

Exactly he is a solid player just no playing time for him here. The hate for him on RAB was absurd in my opinion

        • 86w183

Agreed… blame it on clumsy roster assemblage.

Tex who only plays 1B, Jones who plays RF/1B (poorly @ 1B), Beltran RF only, A-Rod DH only. That’s terrible flexibility/versatility. Plus a roster that is way too LH offensively because Tex, Headley and Beltran are all better from that side.

          • SteveNj

Bingo lol amen brother. Jones has had a solid career just not a fit for us

August has seen Ryan’s BA fall from .316 to .255, his OPS fall from .876 to .708. His line for this month is .125/.176/.125. Yes, SSS. But, can we please stop pretending he’s any sort of solution at second? He should have been DFA’d (not Jones), Capuano on the roster for a day, and the Ref called up tomorrow. But you know, at this point, Cashman will say he doesn’t want to cut Ryan because he wants to keep his options open come September 1st. Meanwhile, that’s over 2 weeks more of this crap.

    • Some Asshole

Okay, I’ll bite. Who is pretending that Brendan Ryan is the solution?

      • Dan A.

    • grandedan

You’re right. They could have designated Ryan, sent down Pinder and brought up Cap and Ref/Pirela. It’s not like Goody probably can pitch tonight anyway. Could sent down Cap in a couple of days if you wanted Goody back.

This team is committed to Drew/Ryan at 2b. That’s all there is to it.

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

Back up 1b is literally the least important spot on the roster. Garret Jones has played all of 101 innings at 1b this season. It’s not a big deal. Capuano is in a glass case labeled break in case of emergency tonight, he’s only here because of the 16 inning game last night. They’ll add another bench player soon. Heathcott or Figueroa seem like the most likely candidates, although there is also Refsnyder.

      • http://yankeecanada.com/ robertg

all this friggin around back and forth with different prospects for short periods is really doing nothing for our lineup or our results. It screws up the chemistry(if you think the yankee team has any at present) and they never get long enough in the lineup to really prove themselves.

That would have been a sweet get. I was hoping the Yanks could trade for him at the deadline. Still have a chance for him as a FA this winter. He’s a second tier guy who the Yanks should be able to afford. Would be good for the six man rotation.

      • Preston

Takes two to tango. There is zero indication that the Mariners shopped him.

        • grandedan

Which as I pointed out at the time, makes little sense unless the Mariners thought they had a realistic shot at a WC berth. It’s possible the Mariner’s believe they’d have a reduced chance of signing him in the off season had they traded him but I’m not sure that’s worth the possibility of losing him for nothing to free agency.

Be that as it may, if the Yanks feel the need to add pitching this winter, and Hal doesn’t want to raise the budget, Iwakuma should be a primary target.

DFA’ed, twice. Cold. Hopefully Jones goes somewhere he can play, and we get some no-name A ball relief pitcher in return. Let go CC, hopefully he tosses something of a late career-CC gem, and Caps isn’t even needed.

    • Preston

And tomorrow or the next day they’ll DFA Capuano for the second time. But Cashman would never cut either, because he loves his vets and he owes them each 5 MM dollars.

      • Mandy Stankiewicz

Early October, somewhere on a giant yacht in the Algerian Sea; Capuano, Drew and Cashman raise flutes of champagne above their meals of endangered spotted owl, laughing about this baseball nonsense. Meanwhile, covered in soot and wearing ragged, torn, dirty, turn-of-the century clothing (ala newsies); Refs, Pirela and Zolio Amonte work tirelessly in preparation for 2016, a year where none of these players will even sniff the decadent, lusty lifestyle of MLB baseball. #narrative

        • Preston

Do you really think that adding Kyle Davies to the roster, or prematurely bringing up Brady Lail after 2 starts in AAA is the better move? Emergency mop up guys are in the role they are for a reason. If they were good they would be playing a more significant role.

          • Mustang

Yea, I do. Maybe they would bring something better to the table.
This was a shit signing from go when people were trying to convince me that he be ok as a 5th starter

            • Preston

I’ve seen Kyle Davies pitch. I’m not excited to see it again. And I’d rather have Lail, who has a real future with the org, focus on his own development than get prematurely added to the 40 man roster (burning an option year) to sit in the bullpen and miss a AAA start. Capuano still out-pitches either against AAA competition (he has a 1.93 ERA down there in limited time this season) no reason to expect the other two to be better against MLB competition at the moment.

              • MikhelB

But in some way that helps youngsters to learn from stablished majorleaguers, though the best move would be not to bring players RIGHT NOW and wait until september, youngsters like Lail who already pitched in AA should have to be added to the 25 man roster early in the season to get the most of them. If he is brought right now he could end up pitching just four times until september gets here.

              • Mustang

“no reason to expect the other two to be better against MLB competition at the moment.”

I would rather take my chances.

          • MikhelB

What is premature in the case of young players? Is AAA really that different than AA in terms of talent? From what I have seen the best players do not last long at AAA and are promoted to AAA, but usually are left a bit longer at AA, so, if any I think a pitcher could very well be facing inferior talent at AAA, though more experienced lifetime minorleaguers, but not AS much.

In that regard I think that MLB teams should again start sending their best prospects for a month or two to winter leagues in the caribbean to face a highest pool of talent to refine their skills.

            • Preston

“From what I’ve seen the best players do not last long at AAA”, Brady Lail is a former 18th round pick who projects as a back end starter. He needs more than 2 starts at AAA before becoming an MLB option.
And since he’s likely to be an up and down arm even when he is ready to contribute to the MLB team, he’s more valuable with his option years in tact. Which is why you don’t add him to the 40 man to come up and be a mop up guy when you have a 36 year old journey man who can do a similar job.

        • Preston

    • grandedan

This guy runs super hot and cold and overall he’s about average now. Expect some inconsistency from Severino as well. One thing nice about our guy is he has more pitches to get guys out with. Lefty with a big arm is always a nice thing though.

    • Hank

ERA is now just a touch under 5

I fully expect some reports on “he’s tipping his pitches” from Cafardo/Edes which is the go to article after any bad Rodriguez starts (as obviously he is too good to actually get hit)

This guy is a slightly better version of Felix Doubront.

  • grandedan

I think I talked about this a year ago. The Yanks really need to make McCann the backup 1b. It’s becoming harder and harder to have a primary backup 1b on the roster. This is something that should be a priority in the off season. It’s not like McCann couldn’t use a break from behind the plate either and it would give JRM more ABs and perhaps even some ABs to Sanchez if he makes it to the big club. It kills about three birds with one stone.

If it’s a crappy game, just let CC go 6 and Cap finish it…at least you can say the bullpen got a day off.

Roller coaster couple of weeks for Garrett Jones. The business side of the game so sucks.

  • Novava

It’s hard to believe they don’t use Jones. But yet they use Cap? I guess that really explains everything. I predicted they would finish fourth in the Division. I’m sticking with the prediction. This team needs a lot of changes including FO and ownership.
