Game 76: Save Us, Masahiro
Youngsters thrive in a 12-3 blowout win against the White Sox

Here are some notes to start the day:

  • In case you missed it earlier, 3B Miguel Andujar was called up to the Yankees and 1B Chris Carter accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Scranton. He hasn’t reported to the RailRiders yet, but will in the coming days.
  • Four Yankees farmhands were selected to the Double-A Eastern League All-Star Game: SS Thairo Estrada, 1B Mike Ford, RHP Yefry Ramirez, and LHP Justus Sheffield. Congrats to them. Here are the Eastern Division and Western Division rosters (PDF links).
  • SS Kyle Holder was placed on the High-A Tampa 7-day disabled list, the team announced. I’m not sure what’s wrong with him. IF Daniel Barrios was brought up from the rookie Gulf Coast League to fill the roster spot. Calling up a GCL kid suggests a short-term injury.
  • Make sure you check out Andrew Marchand’s article on OF Clint Frazier, who spoke about everything he’s learned since joining the Yankees. “I’m not going to shy away from letting people know I’m confident in my ability,” he said.

Triple-A Scranton Game One (7-6 win over Syracuse) completion of yesterday’s game, which was suspended due to rain with one out in the top of the first

  • CF Mason Williams: 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB — first homer of the season
  • RF Dustin Fowler: 1-1, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — homered before the rain yesterday, though he didn’t play in either game today … he is still with the RailRiders (photo evidence), so maybe the Yankees were holding him back in case they needed to call him up (to replace Tyler Austin, maybe?) … either way, that’s his 13th homer of the season and a new career high … he had 12 all of last year
  • PH-RF Mark Payton: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB — threw a runner out at the plate
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-1, 1 R, 1 2B — I’m pretty sure he’s the first player to play in a big league game and appear in DotF on the same day … he played the start of the game yesterday, before the rain (duh)
  • PH-3B Abi Avelino: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • LF Clint Frazier: 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS — had been in a 3-for-22 (.136) slump
  • RHP Chance Adams: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 14 of 24 pitches were strikes (58%) … he started the game yesterday
  • LHP Caleb Smith: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 5/3 GB/FB — 63 of 100 pitches were strikes … only the second time in 15 starts that he allowed as may as four runs
  • RHP J.P. Feyereisen: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 27 of 46 pitches were strikes (59%)

Triple-A Scranton Game Two (3-1 win over Syracuse in seven innings) they faced old pal RHP Jaron Long

  • CF Mason Williams: 2-5, 1 K, 1 CS — nice doubleheader for him
  • DH Clint Frazier: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K
  • 3B Abi Avelino: 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Matt Wotherspoon: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0/4 GB/FB — 30 of 47 pitches were strikes (64%) … nice spot start in the doubleheader for the Scranton native
  • LHP Tommy Layne: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 16 of 19 pitches were strikes (84%) … first hits and run he’s allowed since being sent down … now 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K in five appearances

Double-A Trenton (5-1 loss to Richmond)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 0-1, 4 BB, 1 K — second career four-walk game … he had one in the Dominican Summer League way back in 2012
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-5
  • RF Billy McKinney: 3-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 K — threw a runner out at the plate … 17-for-42 (.405) with five doubles, one triple, and one homer in his last 12 games
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 0-4, 1 K
  • LHP Josh Rogers: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 5/4 GB/FB — 44 of 74 pitches were strikes (59%) … he’s already allowed more runs in Trenton (20 in 39 innings) than he did in Tampa (16 in 52.2 innings)

High-A Tampa (2-1 win over Charlotte)

  • LF Tito Polo: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K — 13-for-30 (.433) during his eight-game hitting streak
  • RF Trey Amburgey: 0-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • 2B Nick Solak: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding)
  • SS Angel Aguilar: 0-2, 1 K
  • RHP Brody Koerner: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 13/6 GB/FB — 67 of 103 pitches were strikes (65%) … he’s gone at least seven innings in his last three starts, which is pretty unheard of in the minors

Low-A Charleston (14-1 win over Rome)

  • SS Hoy Jun Park: 1-3, 2 R, 2 K, 1 HBP — left the game in the sixth for an unknown reason, two innings after the hit-by-pitch
  • 2B-SS Diego Castillo: 2-6, 4 R
  • LF Blake Rutherford: 2-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K — only his fifth multi-hit game in his last 26 games
  • CF Estevan Florial: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 HBP
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 1-3, 1 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB
  • RHP Nick Nelson: 5 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 6/3 GB/FB — 49 of 76 pitches were strikes (64%) … 49/21 K/BB in 47.1 innings
  • RHP Matt Frawley: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 23 of 33 pitches were strikes (70%) … 17/1 K/BB in nine innings since the trade

Short Season Staten Island (5-4 win over Vermont in ten innings)

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 0-5, 2 K
  • RF Leonardo Molina: 0-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 SB
  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 0-4, 1 BB, 4 K — 1-for-10 with six strikeouts so far
  • DH Kendall Coleman: 3-5, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 K
  • RHP Drew Finley: 2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 40 of 62 pitches were strikes (65%)

Rookie Pulaski (10-6 win over Bluefield)

  • DH Pablo Olivares: 2-4, 2 , 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — 9-for-22 (.409) through six games for the 19-year-old
  • RF Steven Sensley: 2-3, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP — first pro homer for this year’s 12th rounder, who is just up from the Gulf Coast League … he’s 4-for-9 with two double and a homer so far
  • 3B Dermis Garcia: 2-5, 2 , 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) — second homer in six games … he hit 13 in 57 games at this level last year

  • LHP Tony Hernandez: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 5/0 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing) — nice debut for the 20-year-old, who was last year’s 15th round pick
