It’s been a while since I’ve updated the standings, so let’s do that today. Here are the day’s notes first:

  • LHP Justus Sheffield was placed on the Double-A Trenton disabled list with a right oblique strain, the team announced. Manager Bobby Mitchell admitted to Kyle Franko it is a pretty significant strain. Sucks. There is no timetable for Sheffield’s return. At least it’s not his arm, I guess.
  • Baseball Prospectus released their midseason top 50 prospects list, which includes three Yankees: SS Gleyber Torres (7th), RHP Chance Adams (37th), and Sheffield (47th). Prospect eligible players in the big leagues (so OF Clint Frazier, OF Dustin Fowler, and IF Tyler Wade) were not included, ditto 2017 draftees.
  • OF Zack Zehner and LHP Nestor Cortes have been added the Double-A Eastern League All-Star Game, it was announced. Zehner is replacing 1B Mike Ford (promoted) on the roster and Cortes is replacing Sheffield.
  • Welcome back, Mason Williams. He cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Scranton, the Yankees announced. That’s good. Never hurts to have a spare center fielder lying around.

Triple-A Scranton (4-3 win over Buffalo in eleven innings, walk-off style) they are 54-32 and have a one-game lead in the North Division

  • DH Jake Cave: 2-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-6, 2 RBI — two-run walk-off single in the 11th
  • 1B Mike Ford: 3-4, 1 R — Conor Foley says Ford left the game with hamstring soreness and he’ll be reevaluated tomorrow … the first base depth chart is really, really thin right now
  • RF Billy McKinney: 3-5
  • 2B Jonathan Diaz: 3-5, 1 R, 1 K — first game back with the RailRiders after yesterday’s minor trade
  • LHP Dietrich Enns: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 7/3 GB/FB — 67 of 92 pitches were strikes (73%) … 28/5 K/BB in 28 innings around the shoulder injury
  • RHP Jonathan Holder: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 13 of 24 pitches were strikes (54%) … he’s going to have to do better than that to get back to the big leagues
  • RHP Ben Heller: 2 IP, zeroes, 3 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 18 of 28 pitches were strikes (64%)

Double-A Trenton (6-3 win over Reading) they are 57-28 and have a five-game lead in the Eastern Division … they have the best record in all of Double-A this season, including the Southern League and Texas League

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — this qualifies as a “poor” game for him since the promotion
  • DH Tito Polo: 1-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB — left the game for an unknown reason in the fifth inning
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K — hitting streak ends at 18 games
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 1-4, 2 K, 1 SB
  • LHP Daniel Camarena: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 5/3 GB/FB — 48 of 77 pitches were strikes (62%) … eleven runs in 14.2 innings since coming back from the shoulder surgery

High-A Tampa (8-3 loss to Fort Myers) they are 47-36 overall this season … they won the first half North Division title and have already clinched a postseason spot

  • 2B Nick Solak: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K

  • RF Alex Palma: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB
  • RHP Brian Keller: 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 5/1 GB/FB — 58 of 94 pitches were strikes (62%) … first start with Tampa after a 3.29 ERA (2.84 FIP) with 27.0% strikeouts and 5.1% walks in 82 innings with Charleston
  • LHP James Reeves: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 B, 1 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 15 of 20 pitches were strikes

Low-A Charleston (13-9 loss to Asheville) they are 45-39 overall and 9-4 in the second half … they’re tied for the Southern Division lead in the second half standings, and a second half division title clinches a postseason berth

  • 2B Hoy Jun Park: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K
  • SS Diego Castillo: 0-5
  • CF Blake Rutherford: 1-3, 1 2B — left the game for an unknown reason in the sixth inning

  • RHP Austin DeCarr: 2 IP, 4 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 3/0 GB/FB — 27 of 56 pitches were strikes (48%) … he’s really struggled since coming back from Tommy John surgery last year

Short Season Staten Island (5-3 win over Hudson Valley) they are 13-2 and 4.5 games up in the McNamara Division

  • 3B Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI
  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 E (fielding)
  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 0-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB — got picked off first
  • RF Leonardo Molina: 1-4, 1 K — threw a runner out at the plate
  • RHP Alex Vargas: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 11/4 GB/FB — 48 of 72 pitches were strikes (67%) … he missed all of last season due to injury, so it’s good to see him come back strong

Rookie Pulaski (6-4 win over Danville) they are 11-4 and two games up in the East Division

  • CF Leobaldo Cabrera: 1-4, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB
  • RF Steven Sensley: 3-3, 1 2B, 2 BB — this year’s 12th rounder is now 12-for-31 (.387) with four doubles, three homers, eight walks, and nine strikeouts in nine pro games

  • DH Canaan Smith: 2-5, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 HBP, 1 SB — this year’s fourth rounder is hitting .286/.474/.357 with nine walks and ten strikeouts in eight pro games
  • LF Raymundo Moreno: 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — 19-year-old went from .200/.294/.267 to .300/.391/.400 in one game
  • 3B Lisandro Blanco: 3-6, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 2 K — a single, double, and triple should count as a cycle in the GCL because home runs are pretty darn rare down here
  • RHP Wellington Diaz: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 4/4 GB/FB
  • RHP Harold Cortijo: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 3/3 GB/FB
