CC Sabathia heading for tests on troublesome right knee
Yankees lose Sabathia to injury, game to Blue Jays 4-2

Got some roster notes to pass along:

  • RHP Dillon Tate has been promoted from High-A Tampa to Double-A Trenton, the team announced. He has a 2.62 ERA (3.64 FIP) with 19.3% strikeouts and 6.3% walks in nine starts and 58.1 innings since coming back from a shoulder issue. Tate came over from the Rangers in the Carlos Beltran trade after being the fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft.
  • RHP Jonathan Holder has been placed on the Triple-A Scranton disabled list, the team announced. That’s not good. The Yankees really beefed up their bullpen at the trade deadline, but losing pitching depth is never a good thing. Hopefully it’s minor and Holder will be back quickly.
  • OF Carlos Vidal was placed on the Low-A Charleston disabled list, the team announced. Not sure what’s wrong with him, but he left yesterday’s game after a single and running the bases. Vidal’s had a bunch of injury problems over the years. OF Dom Thompson-Williams was bumped up from Short Season Staten Island to take Vidal’s roster spot.
  • The Short Season NY-Penn League All-Star Game rosters were announced (North and South) and no Staten Island Yankees made it. Huh. Can’t remember the last that happened. Staten Island has been in first place pretty much all year too. Chances are someone will go to the All-Star Game as an injury/promotion replacement, so whatever.

Triple-A Scranton (7-2 win over Gwinnett)

  • CF Mason Williams: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-5, 1 R, 1 K
  • DH Tyler Austin: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — 4-for-16 (.250) in his five rehab games
  • LF Jake Cave: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • 1B Ji-Man Choi: 1-2, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB — keeps socking dingers … that’s 12 in his last 26 games between Triple-A and MLB
  • LHP Caleb Smith: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 62 of 95 pitches were strikes (65%) … 102/31 K/BB in 100.2 Triple-A innings this year
  • RHP Nick Rumbelow: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0/2 GB/FB — ten of 13 pitches were strikes

Double-A Trenton (7-4 win over Hartford)

  • SS Thairo Estrada: 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — had been in a little 4-for-27 (.167) slump
  • DH Aaron Hicks: 1-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB — 7-for-20 (.350) with three doubles, one triple, three walks, and two strikeouts in six rehab games
  • 1B Mike Ford: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB
  • 2B Nick Solak: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 0-4, 2 K

  • RHP Colten Brewer: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 24 of 37 pitches were strikes (65%) … 58/12 K/BB in 50.1 innings … how long until he’s traded to the Orioles for international bonus money? he feels like the kind of guy who could go in a deal like that

High-A Tampa (1-0 win over Clearwater)

  • SS Hoy Jun Park & 2B Kyle Holder: both 0-4, 2 K
  • CF Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K

  • RF Alex Palma: 0-3, 1 K
  • RHP Taylor Widener: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 50 of 77 pitches were strikes (65%) … first time since June 25th that he completed five innings
  • RHP Matt Frawley: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 23 of 29 pitches were strikes (79%)

Short Season Staten Island (3-2 win over Williamsport, walk-off style)

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K — walk-off single
  • RF Timmy Robinson: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Jorge Guzman: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 Balk, 2/4 GB/FB — 51 of 78 pitches were strikes (65%) … 64/15 K/BB in 47.2 innings

Rookie Pulaski Game One (9-3 loss to Princeton in seven innings)

  • CF Evan Alexander: 0-4, 1 R, 2 K
  • 2B Eduardo Torrealba: 3-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 HBP, 1 SB — the Red Sox signed the 18-year-old two years ago, but MLB voided the deal because Boston was cutting deals under the table to skirt the bonus pools
  • SS Jesus Bastidas: 1-2, 1 HBP, 1 SB
  • 1B Eric Wagaman: 0-3, 1 K
  • RHP Luis Medina: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 WP, 4/1 GB/FB — only 29 of 61 pitches were strikes (48%) … one hit and six runs? not even mad, I’m impressed

  • DH Jhon Moronta: 1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB
  • C Hemmanuel Rosario: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 1 E (pickoff) — 17-year-old signed for $247,500 as an undrafted free agent a few weeks back … he’s got some skills, could be a nice little find for the Yankees
  • RHP Yancarlos Baez: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 6/1 GB/FB

Rookie GCL Yanks West (13-5 loss to GCL Tigers East)

  • CF Terrance Robertson: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1 SB, 1 E (fielding) — the 2015 12th rounder is 12-for-27 (.444) with four doubles during his little eight-game hitting streak
