Yankees sign Aaron Judge, Luis Severino, three others to one-year pre-arbitration deals
Thoughts with Opening Day two weeks and one day away

The good news: The Yankees didn’t lose today. The bad news: The Yankees didn’t win either. They played to a 2-2 tie with the Tigers. Lame! The Yankees had a runner on third with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but two strikeouts and a ground ball stranded him. So it goes. Didi Gregorius hit a home run, and both Aaron Hicks and Adam Lind had singles. Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gary Sanchez went a combined 0-for-9 with five strikeouts. Womp womp.

CC Sabathia got the start moseyed on through four innings, allowing only a solo homer to Leonys Martin. Adam Warren, Aroldis Chapman, David Robertson, and Chad Green each threw a scoreless inning. Their combined line: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. Gio Gallegos blew the save that led to the tie. Gallegos might wanna get some outs at some point. He hasn’t had a good spring. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here are the rest of the day’s notes from Tampa:

  • The Opening Day starter could be announced soon. “We’re starting to hone in on it. Nothing final yet. Could be a week from now. Could be less. But we haven’t finalized it yet. Those conversations are starting to happen with a little more urgency,” said Aaron Boone. Masahiro Tanaka lines up for Opening Day right now, for what it’s worth. That could always change though. [Bryan Hoch]
  • Two more roster cuts announced today: Gleyber Torres and Kyle Higashioka were optioned out. Gleyber looked pretty rusty this spring. I’m more surprised Higashioka was sent down than Torres. I would’ve guessed the Yankees wanted the third catcher around a little longer to work with the pitching staff. Oh well. I count 47 players remaining in big league camp.
  • New second baseman Neil Walker got some at-bats in minor league camp today. He’s going to go through a full workout on the minor league side tomorrow, then play in his first Grapefruit League game Friday. [Marc Carig]
  • The Yankees will be on the road to take on the Orioles tomorrow afternoon. That game will be televised. Chance Adams is the scheduled starting pitcher.

Here is the nightly open thread. If you’re interested, today’s game will be replayed on YES (10:30pm ET) and MLB Network (11pm ET). MLB Network will have the Mets and Nationals live tonight in the meantime. The Knicks and Nets are playing as well. Talk about those games or literally anything else here, as long as it is not religion or politics. Thanks in advance.
