Update: Yankees sign Adam Lind to minor league deal
Brett Gardner and the future of the leadoff spot

Beating the Mets is always a good time. The Yankees did exactly that this afternoon. Billy McKinney swatted a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning. It was his fourth dinger of the spring. He’s now tied with Miguel Andujar for the team lead. Brett Gardner went 2-for-2 with a walk and Austin Romine had two hits as well. Romine is 8-for-12 (.667) this spring. Kyle Higashioka and Kyle Holder both had two hits off the bench. Trey Amburgey smacked a homer too.

Domingo German started and struck out five in 2.2 innings. He allowed two unearned runs when Estevan Florial dropped a fly ball. Womp womp. German was commanding “that fastball the way he would need to to be a dude up here,” said Aaron Boone to Billy Witz after the game. Dillon Tate allowed an unearned run in his two innings. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here are the rest of the day’s notes:

  • CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka, and Dellin Betances all threw simulated games today. Luis Severino will make his first spring start tomorrow. That game will be televised. “I feel very good. If they tell me to cool it down, I will. They know what they’re doing. I feel very good,” said Severino about last year’s workload. [George King, Brendan Kuty]
  • Clint Frazier (concussion) feels better. He’s been riding a stationary bike and throwing. He’s hoping to be cleared to start swinging a bat again soon. “I kind of feel like I’m turning a corner,” he said. No update on Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) today. [Kuty, Pete Caldera]
  • Hal Steinbrenner was at the complex today and he was asked about the luxury tax plan. “We’ve got as you know a good deal of breathing room and we’re not afraid to spend it come July or even sooner if we feel we’re not good enough in a certain area,” he said. [Caldera]
  • The first round of cuts should be coming soon. The Yankees have to go to the other side of Florida again on Sunday, so maybe the cuts will come after that. Spare catchers (Francisco Diaz? Chace Numata? Jorge Saez?), lower level minor league guys (Jonathan Loaisiga? Florial?), and extra arms (Cale Coshow? J.P. Feyereisen? Brady Lail?) are usually among the first cuts.

This is the open thread for the night. Today’s game is being replayed on SNY right now and there is one college basketball game on tonight. That’s about it. Talk about anything except religion or politics right here. Thanks in advance.
