Mackanin lands in New York

By Benjamin Kabak

Pete Mackanin, the man who ended 2007 as the Reds’ interim manager, will join the Yankees as a scout. Mackanin has scouted with the Reds, Pirates and Expos in his career. That family tree of baseball hardly screams success, but Mackanin is well-regarded as a talent evaluator among his colleagues.

steve (different one) says:

i don’t know a lot about his guy, so i am not an expert on his resume, but don’t the Reds have like the 2nd or 3rd best farm system in the majors? wouldn’t he have had something to do with that?

honest question.

Mike A. says:

For what it’s worth, he’ll be serving as a Major League scout, not an amateur scout.

steve (different one) says:

ahh, thanks. was that his role in Cincy?

Mike A. says:

Wikipedia says he was an advance ML scout for the Reds prior to being named interm manager. Before that he managed the Pirates on an interm basis, and a slew of minor league teams.

Where would we be without wikipedia?

I think Mackanin was the advance major league scout for the Reds before becoming the interim manager for that org. Is there anyway to know how successful he was as an advance ML scout, besides going on reputation alone?
