It’s Derek vs. the Yanks in Spring Training

By

On March 3, the United States’ representatives to the World Baseball Classic will square off against the Yankees in Tampa. While it won’t be weird to see most of the U.S. team on the other side of the ball, it will be quite strange to see Derek Jeter facing his own team. The Yanks’ captain will be battling his teammates, and while Derek hopes none of the Yanks’ hurlers bust him up and in, he better watch out for that Jorge Posada character behind the plate.

Soooo who plays SS for the Yanks? C. Ransom?

Is it confirmed that jorge actually going to play?

    • Ben K. says:

Jorge is playing for the Yanks but is not playing for PR in the WBC.

      • Tom Zig says:

I’m pretty pumped to watch the game. Do you know if it’ll be on ESPN or MLB Network?

      • YankInBeantown says:

I’m pretty sure Tom Zig was referring to who would play SS for the Yanks during the Exhibition game against Team USA next month at Steinbrenner Field…seems to me like the obvious choice would be new pickup and former AL ROY Angel Berroa.

But can I just say that I think the new name for the Yankees spring training home is annoying? I mean, Legends Field just sounds so much…cooler.

  2. Manimal says:

Should be interesting. I’m sure both Jeter and other Yankee players are scheming something. I doubt he tries to steal on Jorge, got to watch out for that shoulder.

I honestly hate that Jeter’s playing in this thing. ARod too, but Jeter worries me more PRECISELY because pitching him inside works so well. His hands are so very vulnerable out there, we just went through a season where he couldn’t drive the ball for three months due to getting plunked on the hand, and pitching inside is HARD. Some kid with crap control tries to come in tight and overthrows because OH MY GOD THAT’S DEREK JETER, and all of a sudden we have a singles-hitting, crap defending shortstop who refuses to sit on the bench and let his hand heal because he needs to lead by example and be a hero — regardless of how bad it is for the team.

that will be so weird watching jeter bat against the Yanks! I say he goes 1 for 3 with a single, walk and a strikeout.

Via mlbtr, the Angels have said again that they are not in on Manny. My question for you guys is why would a team say they aren’t interested in a player? If they said they were interested, wouldn’t that drive up the price for the Dodgers or whoever signs him? Any dollar more that that team has to spend is good for the Angels, right?

    • whozat says:

      a) Hey! A big reply button!

      b) I figure the Angels don’t really care about the Dodgers; it’s not like they play them. But…yeah, I don’t really know why you’d ever say you’re not in on a player, unless you’re concerned about your offseason getting cast as a failure if the media portrays you as having lost out on hordes of free agents.

    • cor shep says:

Why drive up the price when it just raises the free agent asking price in the future.

The giants are in another division and league than the angels, so it doesn’t really matter. Maybe they don’t wanna drive up the price so next year when the angels try to sign someone, the money won’t be referred to Manny-money, ya know?

      • A.D. says:

Exactly. I’m pretty sure the Dodgers would dump the Manny idea at this point if they weren’t convinced he’ll end up playing for less for the Giants. and they have to play him 18 times a year.

  5. A.D. says:

Somewhere Congressman Mondesi is so damn excited over the reply button

  6. Rob S. says:

Posada is not projected to start Spring training games until March 8. I don’t like the implications of this as far as the pitching staff goes.
