Open Thread: Oh no, minor injuries

By Mike Axisa

PeteAbe has a couple of small injury notes:

· Jesus Montero (strained right groin) was injured sliding to track down a passed ball. Joe Girardi said it seemed like a “moderate” strain. Given his status and youth, they’ll be cautious bringing him back.

· Jon Albaladejo caught a ball off the back of his left leg near the ankle and has a bruise. He’s day-to-day.

A pair of small nothings, if you ask me. Both guys have plenty of time to get healthy before the season starts. The more important injury news, that you might have missed earlier, is that Jorge Posada’s shoulder is okay, and he could DH as soon as tomorrow. My educated guess it that the team will hold him back until Tuesday.

Former Yankee Updates: Chad Jennings checks in on some former Yankees and how they’re faring during Spring Training. Of note is the news that Carl Pavano managed to throw two scoreless innings without chipping a nail, stubbing his toe or bursting his appendix.

Here’s your open thread for the night. The Nets are the only local team in action because the Devils won this afternoon. Anything goes, just be nice.

Ah, finally, I can post about the Devils! Marty Broduer with his 100th career shutout! Winners of 18 of their last 22.

It’s good to be a Devils fan!

Also, I now have a title for my thesis. It is all things pompous and pretentious and probably I’ll be told to change it. But it’s better than nothing.

Matt says:

The title is…?

Oh and Go Whalers.

Maid Marian or Rosie the Riveter: A study of women and work in Nottingham, 1350-1500

Doesn’t sound pompous to me.

Matt says:

I like it. You wouldn’t, by any chance, happen to mention “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” from The Canterbury Tales? She’s a very different portrait of a woman in that time…and she’s English!

Hahaha! Alas, the Wife of Bath is in no way, shape or form connected to Nottingham, so it’d be hard to give her due credit in the paper.

Matt says:

Haha, alright. We just did TWOB in my Chaucer class; that and “The Miller’s Tale” are my two favorites.

Yeah, Chaucer is brilliant.

All praise be to Mo, but Marty IS pretty godlike. I’m getting a little anxious about the trade deadline. They’re rolling right now, kinda tough to start adding/subtracting when things seem to be pretty ideal. Very interested to see where Pronger winds up. I can’t imagine rooting for him, but at the same time the Bruins would be pretty scary-good if they add him.

The Bruins are already kind of scary.

You know, I’m not sure what you do with the Devils. I mean, Lou’s supposed to be in the market for a defenseman, but I’m not really sure you want to break up the chemistry as is

Agreed. If there’s a clear upgrade to be had, a true impact player, I’m cool with it (even if it means subtracting a useful part, like Gio), but unless Lou is going to get a Pronger or a Niedermayer, I’d rather dance with the ones who brung us. No need to relive the great Ken Klee experiment.

Matt says:

Someone mentioned Goose in the previous thread and it got me thinking: will there ever be a return in baseball to a three-inning closer? I think it’d be pretty cool, honestly.

Drew says:

Good thought, why don’t we move CC and have a 6 inning closer?

Matt says:

Every game, by inning:

1. CC
2. Hughes
3. Kennedy
4. Pettitte
5. Aceves
6. Burnett
7. Bruney
8. Joba
9. Mo

Bruno says:

Kennedy over Wang = FAIL.

Matt says:

Wow I TOTALLY forgot about him. Jesus, I’m losing it.

Mike Pop says:

What a jackass you are. Take that crap to LoHud.

RichYF says:

So if we have the “Mexican Gangster” should CMW be the “Taiwanese Wangster?”

I laughed at this comment and am totally on board with this idea.

Makes sense, since the 8th inning is one of those 3 innings. And as well all know, the 8th inning is more important than the other 8.

That’s a given.

That’s unbelievably revolting.

Drew says:

well, so is ur pointing out the obvious.

Did John Kruk get eye surgery or does he thinke he looks cool wearing sunglasses at night?

Mike Pop says:

He pretends he can shoot laser beams out of them.

John Kruk is a LazerCat.

Mike Pop says:

Not right now, Kemosabi.

He’s taking lessons from Kei Igawa and Anna Wintour.

Matt says:

He has to wear them from now on because otherwise, his gaze may instill stupidity on who so ever it sees.

Mike Pop says:

Manny is going to sign soon. Heyman says they are 1.5 apart. He is speaking right from Boras, I expect a deal to be done in the next 24 hours.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....rez-r.html

anonymous says:

So only 23 hours till Boras calls Cashman and triggers the post hypnotic suggestion he planted.

Mike Pop says:

If I understand this right, Manny has an opt-out for his ssecond year. You know he exercises that and Borass calls the Yanks.

Drew says:

c’mon man, he doesnt call cash, he goes straight to the little stein.

A.D. says:

all that effort and Manny will essentially have the same 2 year deal that the Dodgers offered months ago

anonymous says:

And the Dodgers potentially have an unhappy Manny now. Good luck Joe!

A.D. says:

eh, I think it just shows that the Boras’s touch hasn’t really been the same with the economic issues.

Chris says:

So Manny get’s more money than he would have in his old contract, and gets to skip most of spring training. Those are two positive things for him, so I’m not so sure he’ll be disgruntled.

Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

It will be interesting to see if Heyman has the inside scoop on Manny, who of course is another Boras client.

Rich says:

Canty, Boley, Bernard.

The Giants will have a dominant defense.

Mike Pop says:

Canty, I’ll miss ya but the Boys’ weren’t going to give ya that much.

Nady Nation says:

Makes sense. You like the Brooking deal? Seems like that pretty much eliminates you guys from the Ray Lewis talks.

Matt says:

I’m not huge into the football “hot-stove” thing, but I have a feeling that Ray Lewis is going to be the Manny Ramirez of the NFL free agent season.

Mike Pop says:

Eh, I would of loved Ray but I heard he wanted 13 mill a year. Too much. I like Brooking even though he’s on the downside of his career. Can help out on D, the D looks pretty bad right now. Need a SS real bad but I do like the Kitna pick up to be honest. It’s not like a crazy game changer but just in case Tony gets hurt again we have a better backup then Brad Johnson. Would love to move some picks for J Peppers but priority number 1 is signing D Ware long term and they can’t afford both of them. So Ware is the right way to go.

Nady Nation says:

I actually liked the Kitna pickup too. Definitely agree with you on Ray Lewis. Can’t give a 34-35 year old LB that kind of money, you never know when guys like that will just completely drop off in performance.

Mike Pop says:

I figured if they had a healthy Kitna last year instead of Brad Johnson starting, they might of won another game and made the playoffs haha. Plus Brooking is only getting 6 million over 3 years. Nice little deal.

Yes, but you had to give up to Anthony Henry to get Kitna. Who’s starting across from T-Newman now? Mike Jenkins?

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Mike Pop says:

Henry is wack at the corner spot now anyways and played some safety at the end of the year. That is where Det will probably use him. Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick will battle it out. Scandrick is a baller and so is Jenkins. Scandrick was a steal in the 5th round. Both of them are better options then Henry at this point in time. Jerry will probably pick up more secondary depth though, in the draft and FA. I want Sean Jones.

“Scandrick is a baller and so is Jenkins.”

Your Cowboys optimism is so cute, Mike. Scandrick is a nickelback, at best. Jenkins has potential but he’s greener than Earth Day.

Mike Pop says:

I’m sorry man but your wrong. Scandrick is much better than a nickelback. He came out of nowhere during the combine and opened up eyes as the analysts say. He ran a 4.32 at the 40 and has a solid vertical. 3 year starter at Boise State and there were some saying how he was a 2nd round talent pre-draft. He is much more than a nickelback, I usually don’t disagree with you but you are definitely wrong here. He played so solid at the end of the year last year. You were drooling over the Lito trade and you tell me Orlando is a nickel at best. Okay..

Fair enough, we’ll see. I’m skeptical.

Nady Nation says:

Yea, loving what Reese is doing. It should be interesting to see if Robbins is cut, though. He’s been solid throughout his contract, but he’s 32, coming off a boatload of injuries and knee surgery, and is in the final year of his deal. I read that we’d save $1.3 mil in cap space by cutting him. 3rd and longs with Tuck, Osi, Kiwanuka, and Bernard/Canty rushing should be no fun for offensive linemen.

Matt says:

Having Osi back is going to be fantastic.

Nady Nation says:

I was just talking about that with my friend. That could be the best part of the offseason, the fact that Osi is just coming back to the lineup. We now have 3 solid DE to rotate, along with 3-4 solid interior guys. It’ll be very interesting to see the direction Reese now goes in for the draft. Obviously WR is a glaring need, but we could really use another LB and a safety as well.

Mike Pop says:

Yea, you guys are set at defense and will once again be the key part of your team. If Plax doesn’t play next year, that is where your in trouble I think. Eli will have to step up big time.

Nady Nation says:

Yea, I’m curious to see what we’ll do with WR. I think one of our first 3 picks will be on a WR, but the more things progress, the more I think Plax actually will be back, assuming he’s not in prison.

Mike Pop says:

You better, if he gets cut…The Boys’ pick him up!

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Rich says:

The draft is deep in WRs, and/or they have excess picks to trade for a veteran WR if they want. So now that the defense is set, they have the freedom to focus on adding another offensive weapon.

Here’s the only problem with this:

Last year the Giants were 10th best against the rush (95.8 ypg). They seem to be replacing two guys who are stout against the run (in Cofield and Robbins) with two guys who specialize in passrushing (in Canty and Bernard).

I wonder how well they’ll stop the run.

Nady Nation says:

Canty’s not really a pass rushing specialist though, he’s more effective against the run. Even though he was a D-End, he mainly lined up there b/c the Cowboys run a 3-4. He’s only had 9 sacks over the past 3 years.

True, but Canty plays more in the 295-305 range, and Cofield/Robbins are more around 315-325. Canty’s a good 3-4 end, but in that scheme he’s usually going against guards and tackles, not centers and guards. I think he can make the transition inside to a 4-3 DT, I’m just not sold that he’s necessarily an upgrade over Cofield or Robbins. He’s just younger; he’s not really bigger, though.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Again, I’m not saying the Canty or Bernard deals were bad deals the Giants shouldn’t have done; I’m just saying I don’t think they’re really “great” moves that make you markedly “better”.

They’re both just solid moves. It’s more like acquiring an Albaladejo or a Veras, and not like acquiring a Teixeira or a CC.

Nady Nation says:

That’s fair, but I do like the overall matchups we can create, depending on the situation, using a rotation of Bernard/Canty/Cofield/Robbins (if not released).

Nady Nation says:

I agree with you. I just think the signings, combined with the return of Osi, and as you noted, the continual growth of our secondary, should provide for an overall improvement in defensive performance.

Like I said, none of them are bad moves.

Bruno says:

Haynesworth baby!!!

Canty is good, Boley is above average, Bernard is slightly above average.

There’s nothing wrong with any of the signings. But this doesn’t make them a “dominant” defense. Only the return of Osi and the continued development of Ross and Webster will do that.

These moves are depth moves, not star moves.

Matt says:

Don’t forget about Kenny Phillips. BEAST in the making.

Oh, yeah, Phillips is a beast, no question there.

Don’t forget, though, that Spagnuolo is apparently hot after James Butler, so Phillips may be losing his runningmate.

yeah, I would assume there are NJites that would, friend of mine is Yankees-Jets-Nets- Doesn’t care about hockey.

Bruno says:

Nope. Knicks fan here, but most Nets/Jets fans go the dumb route and rhyme with the Mets. I know they don’t do it because the names rhyme, just seems to play out that way.

Kevin G. says:

Nope, I’m one too.

Kevin G. says:

No wait Giants not Jets. I read too fast.

A.D. says:

Hopefully neither injury effects these guys spring, especially Alby who’s fighting for a spot

Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Yeah, especially Alby after the great winter ball he had. Plus, he’s a good fit for the bullpen as a ‘get me a ground ball’ guy out of the pen. Sort of a latter day Ramiro Mendoza.

But before we go even there, let’s see if Edwar starts throwing again, which hasn’t happened yet. The fact that he was bothered by the same thing towards the end of last year HAS to worry you about him.

A.D. says:

So far this has to be one of the more active NFL trading offseasons in recent memory… at least this early, before the draft.

Nady Nation says:

So, I’ve been doing a little closet cleaning recently, and I have an item which might interest a fellow RABer. It’s a Robinson Cano home jersey, size Large, which I’ve worn a couple times at most (bought the wrong size). It’s not the official Majestic Authentic jersey, but it’s got no name on the back, and the MLB patch on the neck and everything. Just looking to get a few bucks back on my faulty purchase. If someone’s interested, let me know and we can arrange something. Hopefully, Ben/Joe/Mike can pass along my email address to you.

Nady Nation says:

#24. So a Tino throwback, for all you True Yankee Fans out there, and I know you’re one, TSJC.

Matt says:

TSJC isn’t a True Yankee Fan. He uses his head and analysis instead of his gut.

24 just happens to be my favorite number ever.

I might be willing to take that off your hands.

It’s not covered in ketchup (and semen) stains, is it? You didn’t kill a hooker and use the jersey to disguise her body as your buddy so you could drive the corpse upstate and bury it, did you? Is it haunted? Is it 100% cotton?

Nady Nation says:

No, only once, no, yes. I can provide a digital photo for you if you’d like.

Yeah, hook me up with the photo.

Nady Nation says:

Cool. I actually don’t have a digital camera, but my girlfriend does, so I should be able to get it to you by tomorrow or Tuesday.

Matt says:

But speaking of Tino, a few years ago I was wearing a Tino t-shirt jersey to work (camp counselor) and there was this one kid who was about…seven or eight? who wore at least one piece of Yankees’ apparel every single day. So my co-worker (also named Matt, also a Yankee fan) and I are standing around talking and the kid reads the back of my shirt and asked who it was. It was the first time in my life I ever felt old.

I just wrote a lengthy explanation of the relationship between URL and URI, but the post didn’t show up.

Lame.

Mike A. says:

There’s nothing moderation, sorry about that.

“URI” is a Wordpress default.

whozat says:

Huh.

Well, anyhow, URI = Uniform Resource Indicator, while
URL = Uniform Resource Locator.

The latter is what web addresses were called at first, but then the web standards people changed to URI because they felt that “Locator” was too limiting a term. URIs had come to describe more than the mere location of resources.

Mets. My whole family are Mets fans, and I wish them well. Unless, of course, they’re playing the Yankees. Then I want them to be crushed and humiliated.

BigBlueAL says:

Has anyone downloaded IE 8??? Ive been basically just using Firefox exclusively for the past year or so since I couldnt stand IE 7 but just curious if IE 8 is good and if I should check it out.

Love Firefox BUT man sometimes it freezes up alot and I am constantly forced to do a complete uninstall and re-install to get it back to 100%.

Firefox freezes all the time for me, but still better than IE.

BigBlueAL says:

Yup agreed. But thats why Im curious about IE 8 because at least IE doesnt freeze up anywhere near as much as Firefox but it just is way too slow compared to Firefox at least for me.

BigBlueAL says:

I downloaded it and tried it but just didnt like it. Kinda like Safari.

What didn’t you like?

BigBlueAL says:

I dunno, seemed like it was too simple and plain if that makes any sense. I didnt like the display much, granted I didnt really look into it that much in terms of its features and stuff since I was able to get my Firefox back up and running smoothly.

I do know what you mean. I’ve just never been that big of a fan of Firefox. I love the smoothness of Chrome, though. And it’s faster for me than anything else has ever been.

BigBlueAL says:

Problem was when I tried Safari and Chrome my laptop was really messed up but I was able to clean it up (see post further below) so in a way I didnt give Chrome or Safari a chance.

I love chrome. The simplicity isn’t too bad and it does have some good features. And I also think its faster than the rest.

Mike A. says:

I don’t have too many problems with it freezing, but for whatever reason it just stops remembering my saved passwords after a while, and I have to do a complete reinstall to get it working again.

I can’t go back to IE though, I just can’t.

whozat says:

File a bug :-)

They can’t fix the problem if they don’t know about it!

BigBlueAL says:

Well I dont mean freezing, really its the Not Responding crap where I have to exit and re-open Firefox.

I went back to IE a bit because my Firefox was really killing me because I was making the mistake of not deleting the file folder when uninstalling so even when I re-installed it wasnt working any better, I had to delete the file folder myself since it doesnt get deleted when uninstalled even if you choose to uninstall your personal settings and stuff.

IE 7 is a bit better than I remember so thats why I was curious about IE 8, even though now that my Firefox is back at 100% (plus with Adblock Plus its even faster, sorry though for you guys since you have a boatload of ads hope it doesnt affect your advertising) it again reminds me how much better it is than IE.

handtius says:

If you’re on a pc, use chrome, it has the fastest processing time of all the browsers and limits the ram usage on your computer so you can run other apps more smoothly. if you are on a mac stick to firefox (until the goog chrome is worked out). It’s the most integrated into the mac osx. Also, the issue with the passwords can be taken care of in the preferences. there is a quick key that deactivates the password saver. just turn it back on in preferences.

Mike A. says:

Turning the quick key back on doesn’t help. That’s what’s so frustrating about it.

BigBlueAL says:

Could it be that you are deleting your saved passwords/cookies by mistake??

A.D. says:

IE generally sucks… use Chrome for surfing or live with FireFox, haven’t had the issues with FireFox other mention

BigBlueAL says:

Sorry for more computer talk, but what Anti-virus do you guys use and is the most effective?? I recently just completely uninstalled McAfee (get if for free with my Comcast Internet account) because it was interfering with my PC Tools Spy Doctor and I found it that was causing my laptop to go nuts on me.

Just using PC Tools (plus its Registry Mechanic which has been a God send, I mean a Mo send) has made my laptop work like its brand new again!! Plus for the price (30 bucks for each for a 1 year subscription so basically 60 bucks total) its cheaper than McAfee for those who have to pay for it (although no firewall so i have to use the Windows Vista built in Firewall).

I know Karvosky (i think thats how you spell it) is considered the best Anti-Virus but for me PC Tools is more than good enough.

handtius says:

get a mac. no anti-virus software needed. never have had in issue in 10 year since i made the switch.

BigBlueAL says:

I would LOVE to get a Mac book but too expensive. I have a pretty cheap laptop but it works fine when I take care of it. I really only use my laptop to go online and to add music to my ipod so i dont really need anything to hi-tech. I must say though I realize why people hate Vista. Its not as bad as most make it out to be but its a pain in the ass if you dont constantly maintain it.

Mike A. says:

Vista was a pain in the ass at first, but once you get used to it it’s fine. The new Office programs suck ass though, I had to go back to the 2003 versions.

Mike A. says:

I use Norton (my laptop came with 18 months free) and Spybot: S&D for those hard to find adwares.

Joey says:

I use Kaspersky and it’s worked awesome. I got it for free, you can usually get it free about once a year on sites like bensbargains.net, but even if I didn’t I would pay for it in a second, it’s definitely worth the money. I’ve had it for 2 years plus now, never had any problems, doesn’t clog up the short or long term memory like McAfee and Norton do, pretty simplistic for idiots like me but you can use more advanced settings if needed. Definitely recommend it.

…but if you weren’t downloading all that porn you wouldn’t need it ;-) j/k
