Reports: Hughes to start Tuesday

By

At this point, any official announcement is simply a formality, but two stories in New York papers say that Phil Hughes will be Tuesday’s starter in place of the injured Chien-Ming wang. Both Tyler Kepner and Kat O’Brien are reporting that the Yanks’ 22-year-old right-hander will take the hill against the Tigers.

Hughes has had his ups and downs in pinstripes and has impressed the Yankee brass this year. On the season for AAA, Hughes has made three starts. In 19.1 innings, he is 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA. He has allowed 17 hits and has walked 3 while striking out 19. Two years ago, injuries forced Hughes into the Yankee rotation on April 26 for the team’s 20th game of the season. This year, Hughes will make his debut two calendar days later, but it will be the Yanks’ 20th game of the season. The more things change…

Looking forward to it, hopefully Hughes makes the most of it.

Dammit. This is the first Tuesday game not on My9 =(. Radio it is. Go Phil!

  3. At this point I kinda feel bad for Phil. He has a bad start or two and everyone’s gonna start labeling him a bust, again…

    *improbable

This is a very exciting development.

  6. Joe R says:

Already picked him up in fantasy. He’s going to take me to the promise land. Detroit has a scary offense tho. Be nice to see the help act as a little stop gap to this losing “streak” we have goin on.

  7. Kevin G. says:

Wow, he is still only 22?

  8. JobaWockeeZ says:

0_0 he’s 22? Man he really wash rushed. But the normal Yankee fan doesn’t know that and says he’ll suck because of a few bad outings. Meh then I’ll pick him up in fantasy and let him own.

    • andrew says:

He wasn’t really rushed though, he is just that good of a prospect.

      • Accent Shallow says:

Well, if almost everyone ahead of him on the depth chart hadn’t gotten injured in ’07, he probably would have gotten at least a half season at AAA. Doubt that would make a difference in the long run, but maybe he doesn’t pull the hamstring, and who knows how the rest of the season turns out.

As long as it’s not Igawa or Kennedy.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Both Igawa and Kennedy has been doing good in the minors…
Though I’d still not take Igawa, IPK is still pretty good.

Just call me TMVP or LGY.

  12. Brooklyn Ed says:

over/under the times of the 3 stooges (miller, morgan, phillips) going to mention how Melancon is the Yanks top prospect and kept missaying his name, if he’s in the game tonight?

  13. rsam says:

Hughes will be fine just needs experience hope he shuts down that potent tigers lineup.

  14. Holy caps lock, Batman.

    Rangers Suck. Let’s Go Devils!

  15. Steve H says:

B-jobber. I could tell just by the CAPS.

  16. Matt ACTY says:

Making a hole in the rotation to fix one in the bullpen is a bad, bad move. I said it last night and I’ll say it again: any solution that includes putting Chamberlain in the bullpen is a short-sighted solution.

  17. UWS says:

    Seconded.
