Reports: Hughes to start Tuesday

By Benjamin Kabak

At this point, any official announcement is simply a formality, but two stories in New York papers say that Phil Hughes will be Tuesday’s starter in place of the injured Chien-Ming wang. Both Tyler Kepner and Kat O’Brien are reporting that the Yanks’ 22-year-old right-hander will take the hill against the Tigers.

Hughes has had his ups and downs in pinstripes and has impressed the Yankee brass this year. On the season for AAA, Hughes has made three starts. In 19.1 innings, he is 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA. He has allowed 17 hits and has walked 3 while striking out 19. Two years ago, injuries forced Hughes into the Yankee rotation on April 26 for the team’s 20th game of the season. This year, Hughes will make his debut two calendar days later, but it will be the Yanks’ 20th game of the season. The more things change…

A.D. says:

Looking forward to it, hopefully Hughes makes the most of it.

Matt ACTY says:

Dammit. This is the first Tuesday game not on My9 =(. Radio it is. Go Phil!

At this point I kinda feel bad for Phil. He has a bad start or two and everyone’s gonna start labeling him a bust, again…

Yankeegirl49 says:

I agree..but look at the bright side, it’s highly improbably he will do worse than the guy he is replacing.

Matt ACTY says:

Obviously I’ll be friggin’ pumped if Phranchise has a great start but I don’t know if I’ll be able to deal w/the B-Jobbing morons that will scream bloody murder if Hughes does well and the bullpen gives up a single run.

Steve H says:

Like Buster Olney talking about Joba’s mediocre start. Joba’s ERA is 3.94. Beckett’s is 6.00. Lester’s is 4.88. Dice-K’s is 12.79. Penny’s is 7.80. How come no mention of moving them to the bullpen? Is it because their starts are much worse than mediocre?

Matt ACTY says:

Put them in the eighth and they’ll be fine. I mean look at those guys. Boston could make it a five inning game!

A.D. says:

They could probably just throw wake every other day for 5 innings.

Graeme says:

This is a very exciting development.

Joe R says:

Already picked him up in fantasy. He’s going to take me to the promise land. Detroit has a scary offense tho. Be nice to see the help act as a little stop gap to this losing “streak” we have goin on.

Kevin G. says:

Wow, he is still only 22?

He’s two months younger than I am.

Steve H says:

A year younger than David Price, and just one month older than Strasburg.

Steve H says:

Cancel that on Strasburg

JobaWockeeZ says:

0_0 he’s 22? Man he really wash rushed. But the normal Yankee fan doesn’t know that and says he’ll suck because of a few bad outings. Meh then I’ll pick him up in fantasy and let him own.

andrew says:

He wasn’t really rushed though, he is just that good of a prospect.

Accent Shallow says:

Well, if almost everyone ahead of him on the depth chart hadn’t gotten injured in ‘07, he probably would have gotten at least a half season at AAA. Doubt that would make a difference in the long run, but maybe he doesn’t pull the hamstring, and who knows how the rest of the season turns out.

andrew says:

I like the Sox pitching better than the White Sox or Tigers. I’d also take the Sox lineup.

As long as it’s not Igawa or Kennedy.

JobaWockeeZ says:

Both Igawa and Kennedy has been doing good in the minors…
Though I’d still not take Igawa, IPK is still pretty good.

Just call me TMVP or LGY.

Brooklyn Ed says:

over/under the times of the 3 stooges (miller, morgan, phillips) going to mention how Melancon is the Yanks top prospect and kept missaying his name, if he’s in the game tonight?

Matt ACTY says:

Well, Buck said it right yesterday so I have SOME faith.

Honestly, probably zero. McCarver and Buck didn’t mispronounce his name yesterday, and there’s a very good reason for that. The TV producers give them pronunciation sheets well ahead of time. They might suck at analyzing the game, but they’re professionals.

Maybe — maybe — Joe Morgan gets it wrong, but Miller will not.

JobaWockeeZ says:

But they act so unprofessionally. Like yesterday’s game someone was laughing at a fan’s comment that a foul ball would be a HR in our stadium. If Fox gets it right, then ESPN probably wouldn’t.

Matt ACTY says:

but they’re professionals.

I wouldn’t go that far ;)

They get paid for it, which is more than I can say for myself.

Brooklyn Ed says:

its funny how every week the Post bashed Miller and Morgan. just funny.

Brooklyn Ed says:

just saying. correction fixed.

rsam says:

Hughes will be fine just needs experience hope he shuts down that potent tigers lineup.
