Game 46 Spillover Thread II

By Benjamin Kabak

Raise your hand if you’re going to be absolutely exhausted at work tomorrow morning. At least coffee in my office is both free and right around the corner from my desk. Also, I don’t want to stay up until 2 to watch the Yanks lose. Let’s get on that.

Drew says:

Word to that, Ben.

Chip says:

Well so much for that idea

Accent Shallow says:

Drew says:

Okay, a BG HR would give us the lead.
And lol that was the weakest one he hit all night.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Come on Gardner i would love to see a triple.

Chip says:

Well here’s a chance for Brett Gardner to start getting his name mentioned in the CF debate again. A double here would do wonders

BigBlueAL says:

Catching fly balls that arent hit right to him would be nice to.

Chip says:

O come on, Melky wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near that ball

BigBlueAL says:

Oh I agree. But Gardner is supposed to cover more ground due to his speed so he should be making those plays.

Some call me...Nick says:

He’s winning right now, with Leche due for an MRI…

V says:

“Raise your hand if you’re going to be absolutely exhausted at work tomorrow morning. At least coffee in my office is both free and right around the corner from my desk. Also, I don’t want to stay up until 2 to watch the Yanks lose. Let’s get on that.”

I get to work from home tomorrow (remotely), hehehehehehehehehe.

Accent Shallow says:

Huge fan of Robbie, but he’s not exactly a base-stealer.

Chip says:

I’d love to see Gardner swing at one of these meatballs on a 2-0 count sometime

Accent Shallow says:

And deposit it . . . over the head of the second baseman.

Anthony says:

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

nice piece of hittin for gardner wow

handtius says:

GRIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jamal G. says:

The fuck? Is Brett Gardner resembling a Major League hitter?

daveg says:

Bobby steals one base and suddenly he warrants three pick-off attempts?

J says:

nice hit by Gardner!

Ian says:

great at bat for Gardner.. he’s really had a nice stretch of swinging the bat ironically since he was demoted from the starting spot.. we have to be pleased to the uptmost over how Melky and Gardner have played up to this point

Tom Zig says:

As soon as we start getting to a pitcher, Ron Washington comes out and takes him out

Chip says:

Isn’t that his job?

Drew says:

Grit officially exclaims, “guys, I really don’t suck! I was just fuckin with ya.”

Chip says:

All we need now is a fly ball. PLEASE don’t groundout Matsui

Also, do you run Gardner here? It’s risky but it could keep them out of the double play and Salty can’t throw anybody out tonight. Of course they could always just walk Matsui then and pitch to Cervelli

e mills says:

Swisher is due up

Anthony says:

With the way Gardner has been able to reach without it being too close, I say go for it.. Dare I suggest double steal?

Chip says:

That would be ballsy as hell (of course not as ballsy as a straight steal of home!!!!!)

/Gammon’d

daveg says:

Matsui-Swish-Cervelli, no?

Chip says:

My bad, Swisher seems to just be non-existent lately

Drew says:

Might be tougher with C.J.

BigBlueAL says:

I guess Ill be the first to say it, please Matsui no GIDP.

handtius says:

seriously…Gritts hits when he fills in for some taken out..just like that game he came in for Damon when he got ejected.

Chip says:

I was thinking the same thing when he first came in

How many pitchers does Grit have to take out before he starts getting some respect?

Tony says:

SSS!

Gardner is like 320/440/660 for May

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Ian says:

o no.. please not another injury..

Drew says:

Okay Swisher, just don’t look at strike 3 this time. Mmmkay?

I’d almost rather take my chances with Cervelli with two outs than Swish with one out at this point.

That’s all they need. Get ready for the Berroa at DH era.

Matt-Pitt says:

Gimme the Miranda at DH era please.

Anthony says:

A Swisher Slam would be all kinds of awesome right here.

Chip says:

Matt-Pitt says:

Swisher.. Do what it does homie.

Slu says:

Swish will not K here.

Tom Zig says:

yeah but he’ll GIDP. GOD DAMN IT

Drew says:

Man he coulda smashed that pitch

BigBlueAL says:

Pete Abe just said he calculated that Joba’s ERA is 10.38 in the 1st inning and 2.45 in all the other innings. Maybe they can please the Joba to the bullpen people by bringing Joba in the 2nd inning.

al says:

i would rather see a chat format than have to reload every 30 sec.. this sucks..

pat says:

a chat format would be HORRIBLE

Ian says:

Swisher. I’d say you’re a bit overdue for a big hit

A HR would be nice here.

V says:

Wow. Swisher. Way to suck.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

pat says:

fuck this bullshit.

BigBlueAL says:

This is ridiculous.

Matt-Pitt says:

Wow, Swisher… Unreal…

Anthony says:

Swish, you’ve got to be kitten me!

handtius says:

what the…FUVCKYDGRDFJFGHDSFCK

Drew says:

Slu says:

Well, at least he didn’t strike out.

Matt-Pitt says:

I think people would rather a strike out and at least give someone else an opp with 2 outs. Killing the inning like that is just a deflating feeling and could be the ballgame.

10 times out of 10, I’d take the strike out over the double play. Give me a break.

handtius says:

It must have been a joke..right?

Slu says:

Ian says:

could’ve taken a better approach and tried to hit the ball in the air at least though

Accent Shallow says:

Can’t buy a hit right now.

BigBlueAL says:

Lets just have Nady play RF and just underhand the ball into the infield when he comes back, better off than the way Swisher is hitting right now.

Tony says:

Swisher is real bad right now. Every aspect of the game.

Chip says:

You have to be kidding me

Ian says:

Drew says:

S-Dunc would have been nice in that spot against a left handed fastballer.

daveg says:

Pretty much any right-handed major leaguer would have been nice.

At 1.00 AM, Wed 27 May 2009, my love affair with Nick Swisher came to an end.

BigBlueAL says:

It was fun while it lasted.

handtius says:

I say if melks ok, we go with gritts and melk. swish needs a break.

Chip says:

Well if anybody was wondering how we got this guy for a back-up third basemen, this is it. Would it kill Girardi to sit him for a game?

BigBlueAL says:

I would rather get blown out from the beginning than lose games like this, if they lose of course.

Tony says:

Melky to RF, GGBG to CF, Swisha to bench. This is ridiculous.

V says:

I hate to say it, but I agree. Would greatly improve the defense, too.

handtius says:

swish needs a time out.

At this point, I don’t see why the Yanks aren’t considering it. Swisher has been a non-factor for weeks. He’s OPSing .668 over his last 144 plate appearances.

Nick Swisher is now hitting .170 over his last 35 games. The Yanks have played only 46 games all season. Can we end this obsession with him now?

Drew says:

Sure, as soon as we have someone else that can play rf. Looks like Melk will be out a couple of games at least.

What obsession? His OBP is still .365. Where’s the better option?

Since April 17, his OBP is .328. I’d say Gardner is the better option.

Tom Zig says:

2-11 with RISP = :(

Anthony says:

I see Girardi’s content with leaving Aceves out there until this one’s out of reach.

Drew says:

Poot. This really sucks

Ian says:

great. we leave the bases loaded, and of course they come right back and threaten with 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs.. gotta love baseball, huh?

Wow. Shockingly, Aceves is going to give away this game. Let’s not use our very well rested bullpen tonight, Girardi. Brilliant.

Anthony says:

Especially with an off day on thursday, ugh.

Tom Zig says:

I don’t know why Kinsler doesn’t try to break for home on that play. Not like Gardner’s arm is that great

Jamal G. says:

I’m going to go the MSM route and blame Nick Swisher for every unfortunate occurrence that occurs in the game henceforth.

BigBlueAL says:

Would you rather have them talk about sending Joba back to the pen????

He’s not the problem, Jamal, but it’s tough to deny that he is not a problem. His last few months have been worse than Melky 2008.

Chip says:

Aceves couldn’t go forever right?

BigBlueAL says:

I still hate this bullpen….

Tony says:

Look at GGBG hold those runners. Melky’s range plays better in right anyway.

Drew says:

Melky’s range is fine. May be as good as Brett’s.

Tony says:

Melky’s scapula begs to differ right now

handtius says:

Didn’t gritts just jump into a wall and miss a ball that he should have had? so their range is just about the same. And I believe melks was a harder play…straight over his head.

Drew says:

People just love to bash the Melkman, even when his AVG is the best on the team.

handtius says:

I know. It’s sad.

Matt-Pitt says:

Andddd Texas is setup perfectly… Swish would ground into a DP and Texas would captalize… Swish had the at bat of the game and pretty much blew it. Lets hope Coke can keep it them only scoring a run. I still have faith in the offense to comeback in this.

daveg says:

Call me optimistic, but I feel like the Gangster’s gonna get out of this one somehow.

daveg says:

and by get out of it, i mean, he’ll leave the game and someone else will get out of it

al says:

im not sure if my hands are on a wang or a tomko..

If your hands are on a wang, don’t tell us. TMI.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Hope to get a k and walk cruz and den try to double up murphy.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

never mind the strikeout he already drove the runner in.

Drew says:

Why the fuck wasn’t the infield in?

Drew says:

But they bring it in for an IBB

BigBlueAL says:

Keep the infield back again, 3 runs in 2 innings is nothing to come back from.

If this innings goes wrong I guess we will all be able to go to sleep?

pat says:

It’s alright we’ve been pounding their pitching all day this is still very win-able.

Slu says:

No doubt. Their closer is due to give up some runs as well.

dkidd says:

Considering Aceves’ results tonight, they really should have just used Wang. That’s a complete hindsight critique, but when do they plan on using CMW anyway?

Anthony says:

True, but imagine how much more out of hand this game would have been when Wang’s sinker wasn’t sinking in Arlington.

pat says:

Agreed. If not tonight, when?

dkidd says:

nobody wang chung tonight

pat says:
handtius says:

Slu says:

If not then, then I don’t when you would use him. If you can’t use him in this situation, that means he is only pitching in blow outs, one way or the other. And if that is not a good situation to be in.

if lead = +- 3 runs then reliever == Wang

Anthony says:

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Why can’t we do that?

Matt-Pitt says:

C’mon offense… Do what you do and comeback in the late innings.

Andy Stankiewicz says:

Swisher sux and very well may be the worst RF in baseball. Its late and I just wanted to say that before I go to bed.

Accent Shallow says:

Three runs against their pen? Hmmm. . .

Anthony says:

I like the way you think

Matt-Pitt says:

O’Day is very hittable… They can do this.

handtius says:

.188 ave against ain’t to shabby.

Matt-Pitt says:

It isn’t… But the Angels and Mets let him go… 2 bullpens who are pretty questionable so it has to say a little something about the guy.

pat says:

Cervelli chip shot ofer the LF fence.

pat says:

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

y the hell did the mets let him go.

Drew says:

he’s not so good.

Drew says:

C’mon Jetes. Start somethin

Drew says:

Thanks bro. JD, keep it movin.

Slu says:

Top of the order gets it done.

Anthony says:

handtius says:

do it. do it. do it now!

handtius says:

in an arnold voice.

How long before we start considering pinch hitting with CC?

Matt-Pitt says:

There you go, Cap’n… Keep the train moving, lets do this.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

come on johnnyyyyyyyyyyyy.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

handtius says:

i’m going to sleep.

Matt-Pitt says:

Wow… awesome…

Accent Shallow says:

All these groundballs are killing me.

Anthony says:

Damon grounding into a double play? Wow, we must really not be destined to win tonight.

Drew says:

Ah, this game.. this game, I don’t like this game.

Accent Shallow says:

Something like that.

BigBlueAL says:

Didnt see that coming….

Slu says:

That’s why the batting order was changed!

BigBlueAL says:

It wouldve been nice to be in a tie for 1st place in the division after the 1st week of the season for the first time since 2006.

You know, maybe everyone is cranky due to the late hour, but this thread is startlingly similar over the last hour to the one over at Lohud. Blasphemous, I know, but also a little bit true.

Perhaps it’s frustration watching the Yanks go 2 for 11 with RISP. Perhaps it’s frustration with he lack of depth due to injuries. Perhaps it’s frustration with an 84-pitch four-inning Joba start.

If you’re not frustrated by this game, I don’t think we’re watching the same one. The Yanks have had plenty of chances and have capitalized once. It’s frustrating.

Of course it’s frustrating. But I thought the difference between this blog and some others was that the people here were less prone to knee jerk reactions.

What are the knee-jerk reactions? Giving Nick Swisher a day off in a month in which he’s hitting far below the Mendoza Line? Using another reliever from a rested bullpen? Hardly seems knee-jerk to me.

I’m pretty sure Swisher had a day off two days ago. He is their best option right now. Going to Aceves looked might good when the team tied the game, not so good once he gave up runs. Just the kind of second guessing I’m not used to seeing here.

Drew says:

Most of us wanted Joba in for the fifth not Alf. I wouldn’t call it second guessing.

Drew says:

Complaining about a game, and also a batter that has been awful for over a month is knee-jerk?

BigBlueAL says:

Plus at least the weather down here in Miami was horrible today. Ugly day/night all around!!!!

Drew says:

What do you want from us man? It’s been a tough one..

pat says:

No freaking way. This one isn’t nearly as bad as other ones here hve been.

Accent Shallow says:

With the hour and the way this game has played out, isn’t crankiness understandable?

I’d also say that we’re a far cry from LoHud. We all seem to recognize that these crappy games happen. We’re not calling for Girardi’s head, Dave Eiland’s head or Joba to the pen.

Fans are certainly allowed to get frustrated after a game like tonight’s.

Agreed. All I said was that this one particular chunk of the thread was a lot more bitter than I’ve gotten used to here. Sorry if I struck a nerve by mentioning Lohud.

Jamal G. says:

We’re not calling for Girardi’s head…

Really, now? ;)

V says:

Well, that HR is ballgame. I don’t see a 4 run 9th. I’m popping out.

pat says:

wow, now it might be bedtime

Drew says:

Don’t do this to me Phil. Why… Why?

BigBlueAL says:

Phil Coke loves giving up HR’s to lefties.

Tony says:

At least Robertson gets to see what it’s like to pitch without 2-3 men on base

BigBlueAL says:

David Robertson in the role he does best, mop-up time.

Accent Shallow says:

Three straight strikes from Robertson? Hopefully he can keep that up!

V says:

Ok, I lied – this was too funny. mlbtraderumors.com

“According to Chico Harlan of the Washington Post, the Nationals designated pitcher Daniel Cabrera for assignment tonight. Acting GM Mike Rizzo was frank: “I was tired of watching him.” We all were, Mike. Cabrera told Harlan he would not accept a minor league assignment.”

pat says:

Drew says:

I think we might do sumthin in the top of the ninth.

Accent Shallow says:

I have an irrational dislike of Vizquel. Perhaps we should have brought in Jose Mesa for this series.

dkidd says:

just for kicks, let’s win this one

Drew says:

You know what? That sounds like a good idea.

pat says:

For pure shits and giggs I’m down with pullin some runs outta our collective asses.

Sean C says:

I’d certainly prefer a win for staying up this late…

pat says:

I like how ken ominously called this a non save situation. He just did it again.

yankees=warriors says:

LOL, come on, guys, I do this all the time and I actually like staying up for games!

V says:

Godawful AB by Teix.

Starts 2-0. Fouls off a strike, then swings at balls.

pat says:

AROD garbage time HR plz, kthanksbye

pat says:

Accent Shallow says:

Bright spot: at least Robertson looked good tonight.

yankees=warriors says:

I just don’t understand why Girardi didn’t use Wang today.
I hope this doesn’t mean he’ll come out tomorrow while we’re winning!

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

ok this one is over well get em tonight wit burnett.

Accent Shallow says:

Burnett v. Holland should be an interesting matchup. Maybe Burnett can start pitching well again.

Drew says:

ohhhhh give em a base hit! That shit was in the hole

pat says:

crack in the armor baby

dkidd says:

is it greedy to ask for a 4th hit?

Accent Shallow says:

If Gardner manages to reach, what are the odds against Swisher making the last out? 5-1? 25-1? 100-1?

Tom Zig says:

If Swisher sits tomorrow…who plays right field?

dkidd says:

V says:

In a stunning trade, the Yankees have acquired Nick Markakis for Kennedy+Brackman+Venditte.

I keed, I keed.

Drew says:

I’m not the GM or anything but I say call on Singleton.

V says:

Oh well. Can’t win em all.

pat says:

Bat off shoulder?

Drew says:

Grit, I know the games over, but do ya really have to look at the last out? Aysh

dkidd says:

he likes to watch

Accent Shallow says:

Here’s a link to the Brooks Baseball Pitch F/X plot for Holland’s first start. Gas from the left side, but you knew that.

http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....evDate=522

yankees=warriors says:

Get them later today!

Drew says:

I can’t believe the umps made us sit through a 2 and a half hour rain delay. We clearly lost because of that. This one shouldn’t even count.

Sean C says:

I know they’ve tried pitching Joba through a simulated first inning just to get him ready for real game-time, but to day was just overkill, haha.

Andrew says:

Nothing compared to Detroit last year. Survived them both, proud to say.
