Towers to meet with Yanks, others in Indy

By

Ken Davidoff reported late Thursday evening that former Padres General Manager Kevin Towers will meet with the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Mariners at the Winter Meetings in Indianapolis. At that point, says Davidoff, the well-respected baseball mind will decide which team, if any, he will join as an adviser. Davidoff believes that, with the close friendship between Brian Cashman and Towers, the Yankees have the edge.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Towers’ name in relation to the Yankees. Mike originally urged the Yanks to court Towers, and Joe reported on rumors suggesting that Towers would join the Yanks. Towers, as Mike said in early October, is “an exceptional evaluator of talent on the mound” and would be a great addition to the Yanks’ Front Office.

I would love Towers working along with Ca$hman. That braintrust would decrease the chances of bad moves and increase the chances of good moves.

If you read some of Towers quotes over the last week or not, his description of the type of team he wants to work for is basically a description of the New York Yankees. Let’s remember that he won’t be working from a desk in the front office, but will still live in California while doing scouting and evaluating for whatever team. He might even watch some minor league teams too for those type of player evaluations. He will of course be a special advisor when it comes to player acquisitions.

It might be a year or two before he gets another GM job especially if he wants to be an AL GM. A lot will depend on what happens to the Texas ownership situation. The Cubs with new ownership might be something that might open up next year as well as the New York Mets with their current GM problems. Also, a good chance that the Dodgers might be sold next year too which would fit Towers well.

I’d bet a buck he takes a job with the M’s. Jack Z gave him his first break as a scout in baseball and Towers owns property/has family in the NW
