Yankees call up Ivan Nova, send down Sanchez
ByVia Donnie Collins, the Yankees have called up Ivan Nova in advance of tonight’s game. With Sergio Mitre and Javy Vazquez set to start the next two games after A.J. Burnett‘s short outing yesterday, the team was in need of a fresh long reliever, which is exactly what Nova is. He had a 3.15 FIP with a 32-12 K/BB ratio in 37 IP, plus a tidy 1.78 GB/FB ratio. I told you everything you need to know about Nova back in December.
Update by Ben (3:40 p.m.): Per Bryan Hoch, Romulo Sanchez is off the Yankee roster. He wouldn’t have been available for a few days anyway following his 52-pitch relief appearance. Of the remaining AAA pitchers on the Yanks’ 40-man, Jonathan Albaladejo now could come up without a corresponding DL move, and Mark Melancon will be eligible to rejoin the Yanks by the end of the week.

I wish they would make him the surprise start tonight. That way you can keep Mitre in his current role.
starter
Yeah, that.
I would love to see that happen, but I seriously doubt it will.
It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. Nova is stretched out from starting in the minors while Mitre would be able to possibly go up to 65 pitches. He threw 29 on the 5th against the Orioles and 46 against the White Sox on the 1st so 65 might even be a stretch. If he was tiring on the 25th to 29th pitches against the O’s how should we expect him to do against the Tiger’s line-up? Throw the kid out there and give him a shot.
With Mitre starting, it guarantees Nova will be used for a few innings.
Start Nova and he can give you 90-100 pitches (assuming he’s effective) then he can hand it over to the other guys. And Mitre stays available for tomorrow’s start.
Do it Stone Cold style. Cue: Breaking glass sound…
Michael Kay: And it looks like we are about ready to get underway with the first pitch from Mitre.
Al Leiter (shocking at the top of his lungs): Wait a minute! Is that Ivan Nova? Oh my God, he’s breaking through the bullpen window with a baseball bat!!! Now, he is running straight towards the mound!
Kay: Looks like Jeter going to trying stop him. But no, he shoots past a diving Jeter!
Leiter: Looks like he is telling Mitre to get off his mound. Oh my!!! He just hit Sergio in the head with the bat!
Kay: C-Ya!!! Segio has just been sent back to the bullpen. Nova is starting this game.
Leiter: This is unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!! It was damp and chilly afternoon, so I decided to put on my sweatshirt!
it is a slobberknocker
OHMIGOD STONE COLD, STONE COLD, STONE COLD
What on earth are you talking about?
if you don’t know I cant explain.
lol i know what he’s talkinbout, hard to explain
i lol’ed
Hearty laughter.
+1
I am going to laugh if Nova and/or Mitre pitches better than Javy.
I’m not, we need Javy to pitch lights out and win 3 of the next 4 games.
Also, I hope Pettitte gets the start on Saturday against the Twins.
well the yanks should send down aj too work on his mechanics its obvious their is some thing wrong with his shit cuz of last night. Too much bad aj for this rotation.
Nah! Just kidding! This is great news. We haven’t seen a AAA prospect starter with as much hype — albeit not a TON of hype, but enough worth mentioning– called up since Teh Big Three.
Nova’s ceiling, in all probability, would be a #3 starter?
Probably, he looks to be a backend of the rotation guy most likely. His chances are slim to be a #1 or #2 due to the fact that he will have a high WHIP, and not an amazing K/9.
So, this series match-up’s are:
Mitre vs. Willis
Javy vs. Porcello
Hughes(?) vs. Bonderman
CC(?) vs. Verlander
I know the first two are accurate (barring a surprise start from Ivan The Terrible… does the schedule make sense for the last two?
Yes.
Willis has been scratched with the dreaded flu-like symptoms. Brad Thomas is taking his place.
Hughes and CC are slated to start on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, on regular rest.
This Thomas looks like a real dynamo… yep… I smell a pitchers dual.
What is up with Porcello? Is he legit and just stumbling out of the gates or is he kinda like a Feldman?
He is legit, but is young (thus inconsistent) and was probably over worked last year (breaking his previous inning high of 125 IP by 45 IP). Also, the Tigers rushed him, he had only pitched in A+ in the minors.
Also, he has been unlucky with a .396 BABIP and a 58.4% strand rate. His FIP sits at a more reasonable 4.42, actually lower than last year’s FIP of 4.77 (his xFIPs are 4.32 and 4.63 for 2009 and 2010, respectively).
…OR…he was extremely lucky last year.
He might be experiencing Verducii-itis.
Why don’t I get you his last five starts?
and a diet coke.
I wonder if Willis might still pitch this series and allow us to miss Verlander? I live in Michigan and I noticed last time he scratched a pitcher for flu like symptoms he came back and pitched a day later. It would be awesome if the only good pitcher we had to face was Porcello.
I like that thinking but it’s of the wishful kind. The Tigers would love to get Verlander out there against the Yankees instead of Willis.
He is IVAN THE GREAT to me until proven otherwise.
I would almost rather them send down D-Rob to work out whatever problem he’s having
His main problem seems to be a BUNCH of bad luck.
Between Romulo and Ivan, who is the better. Though it was mop-up, Sanchez was pretty good last night. Does he figure to be a starter or a bull-pen arm.
* who is the better prospect.
Ivan Nova, I think.
Nova. Much better control. Romulo looked good last night, but he walks a lot of guys.
I am curious to see who Scranton has set pitch tonight and how they are going to fill to starting spots. It seems as though a number of players need to change addresses.
jason hirsh will pitch every game this week.
If he can get off the couch next to you.
I laughed.
Did the Chris Garcia 60 day DL move happen already.
Not yet.
Michael Kay is reporting that Damon will not play tonight. No reason given. Perhaps calf is acting up again
he is obviously afraid of the sergio mitre experience
What is the origin of this meme?

Michael Kay is reporting that Damon will not play tonight. No reason given. Perhaps calf is acting up again
This is another lie spread by the Yankee propaganda machine after they lost out on signing the ageless Johnny Damon. In fact, Johnny Damon has the calves of a young Pheidippides. If he’s not playing this afternoon, I assure you that it has nothing to do with his legs. In fact, if he’s not in the lineup tonight it’s probably just because he’s working out to make sure that he’s in the best possible shape of his life, which he always is.
Sincerely,
Scott Boras
He is always in the best shape of his life, because he is always getting in better shape every second of every day.
Damon wears these?
Shape-Ups wear Johnny Damon.
They made a movie about Johnny Damon’s life. It was called Highlander.
I saw both of them last year in Scranton and this year in ST and I thought Nova was more impressive. Better mechanics/better athlete. I was impressed with Sanchez’s changeup last night however. Something good to take out of a bad night.
Is Nova someone to be considered for the #5 spot next year. Once Javy goes back to the NL.
I hope that Joba gets another shot before Nova.
If he has a strong showing in AAA this year will be in consideration
I would think Nova would be considered for the #5 spot if the offseason plays out with Pettitte calling it quits and Javy leaves. Even if we brought in Lee like I think we will our rotation would be:
CC
Lee
Burnett
Hughes
?
Unless they put Joba back in the rotation it should be a spring battle between Z-Mac,Nova,Ace and Mitre.
Leaving not leaves.
I think it’s safe to say that Nova is the best Dominican pitching prospect the Yankees had in recent memory. Even better than Jorge De Paula. Even better than Domingo Jean.

*ahem* Melvin. Hello?
Hey Romulo thanks for playing. Your parting gift is a big fat 10x raise to mlb minimum.
