Thames hits the DL with hamstring issue, Huffman recalled

Is Phil Hughes' pitch selection really a problem?

Leftfielder/designated lefty masher Marcus Thames left today’s game with a hamstring issue, and although the MRI came back clean, he’s been placed on the disabled list with a strain. Chad Huffman has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton to take his place.

Huffman was claimed off waivers from the Padres in April, and he’s pretty similar to Thames. Righty hitter, mashes lefties (.903 OPS vs. LHP in the minors, .830 vs. RHP) and is limited defensively to leftfield and first base. Considering that Thames is hitting just .176-.314-.250 since May 2nd with awful defense, chances are Huffman can step right in and the Yankees won’t miss a beat, if not improve.

Huff is limited defensively to two positions, but how bad is he in LF? Obviously he’s better than Thames, but wasn’t sure just how bad he was.

Scouting reports sat average at best, TotalZone says he’s saved nine runs with his glove in 1,324 total chances in left coming into this year.

So Willie Mays in his prime compared to Thames.

Only guy I can say is worse than Thames in the Outfield was Canseco and at least he used his head!! How about his unaggressiveness to the Double that scored a run when he threw high to Jeter a good throw to the cut-off and the runner is out by 10 ft.

            Lmao, used his head. Gold.

I’m pretty sure Carlos Lee is the worst defensive LF ever. Any chance the Yanks can get him for DH?

good! ive been wanting to see how huffman would be in the majors

This is a blessing in disguise! Thank you baseball gods! I was looking at all of the Yankee loses and 9 of them were when Thames started in the outfield. Considering he doesn’t start every game those are some pretty awful #’s…

Meh, one injury I don’t care about.

Thank you lord! Outside of his hot streak in April along with the walk-off HR, he’s done nothing at all. I’m a big supporter of Huffman getting called up, he provides some raw power off the bench!
