Open Thread: The final 10pm ET game of 2010
ByThat has nothing to do with baseball, but it’s amazing nonetheless. So yeah, watch it.
Here’s an open thread if you’re just killing time until the final 10pm ET game of the Yankees’ 2010 season. Oh happy days. Talk about whatever, just be civil.

What do you think the yanks will do with montero and romine in september? i think montero will be brought up but romine I’m not so sure about. what do you all think
You don’t call up major prospects from AA to sit them on the bech, so no. Montero would only be called up if he suddenly starts to defend, continues his hitting tear, and Posada is for some reason compeletly relegated to DH.
You’ve never heard of September call ups?. The minor league season ends in late August/early September, so you call up your top prospects to get a taste of the big leagues, since they wouldn’t be playing anyway. Usually happens around first week of September.
Montero I’m thinking will be up for sure considering he’s in AAA now and starting to improve. Itd be good for him to see some ML action and start his progress to get there. Romine I was thinking that too. He was solid in Spring Training so maybe they would give him a couple AB’s instead of having him sit at home and watch the yanks on tv
I get it, but why would you call up Romine? It seems like a big jump, I don’t know much about these things, but isn’t it generally AAA players called up.
generally, yeah. but for a big prospect like him maybe some mlb exposure wouldn’t be bad
Is Romine on the 40-man roster? Does he need to be added this offseason? If not, there’s no way he’s getting called up. They’re not going to start his service time clock for no reason.
He might travel with the team for a bit, like they’ve done with some other guys (Hughes comes immediately to mind), but he won’t get into a game unless they need to add him to the 40-man anyway.
Sure, but there’s no harm in letting Romine travel with the team. It really depends on the Yankee future plans, and everything you hear is that the Yanks consider Romine closer to being an everyday MLB Catcher because of his complete overall game. He’d already be in AAA if Montero wasn’t there. On the heels of the Lee stuff, I saw a report that Romine would have been called up immediately to AAA had Montero been traded.
Really? I believe you an all, but do you have a link?
I think they’ll both start ’11 where they are now and then move up as necessary.
Woops, totally read “September” as “next year.”
if montero stays hot through August, I could see the Yankees giving him a callup just to get an idea of what they have in him at the major league level. The minor league season will be over and he could probably, depending on the standings get a few starts.
Montero’s 1-2 with a solo homer (oppo variety) and a sac fly thus far in tonight’s game.
I love Jack Zduriencik.
JEEESSSUUUSSSS
Montero sending a little “fuck you!” to Cashman for thinking he was worth just 3 months of Cliff Lee, adn to JZD for thinking Smoak was even close to the prospect teh Jesus was.
From tonight on, Montero’s line will be 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000.
Bust.
Yeah, but will he have sick numbers like this: 147 640 522 131 174 34 3 44 165 2 4 96 131 173 346?
/Januz’d
147 games 640 PA 522 AB 131 H 174 TB 34 2B 3 3B 44 HR 165 RBI 2…ah fuck it i give up
http://www.baseball-reference......html#ALmvp
I was about to ask how Manny didn’t win the MVP that year, but that’s also the year that Pedro went berserk on the whole league and still didn’t win! I know that pitchers winning the MVP Award is a divisive scenario but, knowing what we now know, and assuming what I assume we all assume (that Pedro was clean) he REALLY should’ve won that year. Still, the stats for the top 10 players on that year’s ballot are unquestionably jaw dropping.
And coming in at number 11? Our great friend Bernabe Williams with a ho-hum line of:
.342/.435/.536/.971, 25HR, 115RBI (I know, I know), 202 hits, 28 2B, 317 TB, 149 OPS+, 116 runs (yes, this too), and a 5.0 WAR
Nobody fucks with the Jesus.
jesus over > half season of cliff lee
Jesus>everyone
Jesus > Cashman’s sins
About the 3D broadcast, this is a really stupid game to do it for. First, the broadcasters are mostly the Seattle ones other than Singleton so why would YES broadcast it this way. Next, its not at Yankee Stadium. Its a 10 pm start so ratings are down for that reason. Only like ten people have 3D TVs*. And its not like you can go to a bar or something and watch 3D. Yea, here I am walking in with these stylish 3D glasses.
*Ten people might be exaggerating but regardless very few people have 3D tvs.
Perhaps it’s Seattle driving it, and the Yanks and YES agreed to go along with it. Seattle, it turns out, has a pretty techy and gadget-y population.
yea but YES is broadcasting it. I doubt that many people in Seattle get YES.
So Adam LaRoche was a late scratch in Arizona..
hrmmmmm
ZOMG Derek Jeter for Adam LaRoche!
Maybe he’s headed to LAA. According to MLBTR, the Angels are looking for a corner infield bat.
What is all of you’s take on brandon laird? I’ve heard he could be a better slugger than montero but I’m not so sure about that. What do you guys think?
Who ever told you that was both drunk, high, and completely possibly Brandon Laird’s cousin.
yeah thats what i was thinking. but how good is he really?
I don’t pretend to be an expert. From what I’ve deduced, he has a very solid bat with very un-solid fielding.
He’s certainly better than Montero at slugging security guards.
http://www.azcentral.com/news/.....31-ON.html
http://hiyoooo.com/
No, Montero is one of the top sluggers in minors with true Manny hitting potential. Outside of Domonic Brown, he’s the top hitter in the minors. Laird has a nice swing with impressive power (though not Montero power) but questionable on-base skills.
His defense is a liability and he profiles as a first baseman in the majors, and possibly not a plus, either. He’s not a great athlete at all. He’ll need to keep working on keeping his weight down.
Still, he’s had a tremendous year and frankly, I’ve underrated him all season. He’s got a legit bat, possibly one of the best in the system. It’s all the other questions that remain.
Signed,
Eddie House
Better than Miguel Montero?
Back to back 97s from brackman
99 mph on the black ends the inning against Waring. Goodness.
from Lohud that someone got off twitter.
Trade him for Jason Werth while his value is at it’s peak!
/not that different then some of Ruben Amaro’s other trades’d
from Lohud that someone got off twitter.
It’s almost like being there!
It is so funny how the Yankee Haters aka Mainstream Media is saying how Texas can match-uo with the Yankees now they have Cliff Lee. Everyone knows the history of Texas (Wilting in the summer), so there is no guarantee they are even beating out the Angels. I cannot think of a better outcome than to see the Yankees win Championship 28 in 2010, Justin Smoak (Turn into Justin Choke), and see the New York Yankees with the help of Cy Young Award Winner Cliff Lee and Rookie Of the Year Jesus Montero, win the 2011 World Series for Championship 29.
AL Rookie of the year and AL MVP Jesus Montero.
I’ll say this: If nothing else, you’re definitely an interesting poster here.
You know, past seasons have nothing to do with this season wrt to the Rangers ‘wilting’ in the past. Totally different players. I guess the heat could affect teams, but that’s it.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/st.....rk-yankees
Unofficially, Jorge Posada has become our backup Catcher this year.
Shhhhhhhh!
Well, he has been injured a lot.
In May, yes. But Frankie played a lot in June, although he only had 3 starts so far in 9 games in July. Still looks up in the air to me. If Frankie’s bat heats up again we’ll see what Joe does.
If Frankie’s bat heats up again we’ll see what Joe does.
Hopefully, he’ll get to a fire extinguisher before Posada tries to pee on it to put the fire out.
You can order the list by any column you choose. It’s ordered by games played. 55 > 35…
Right, I should use Games Started under the fielding category. BR has it, here it is:
http://www.baseball-reference......fielding_c
Considering that Jorge missed the last 2 weeks of May with a hammy, it’s been about even.
I understand that vets need off days, but why did Jeter and Posada both play against the scrub last night, but against King Felix, they’re on the bench?
And why is Swisher DHing so much?
Wouldn’t it be nice if post-game interviews asked questions like this, instead of “Joe, didn’t winning this game feel special?”
no, because if that question is asked everyday, our team is 162-0.
And why is Swisher DHing so much?
I heard he has a sore bicep.
Source: Mike Axisa
I think Girardi has a man-crush on Colin Curtis.
Dj’s at-bats looked pretty bad last night. The man needs an off-day. Posada on the otherhand needs at-bats, so sitting him against Felix makes little sense.
They’ve won the first five games of a seven game CA trip. Giving your vets a day off against one of the league’s best starters is understandable.
Not when you could have rested during what looked to be a much easier game the day before.
Justin M. out of ASG, looks like Youk will get in after all.
Was he the next 1B on the fan ballot? That’s how they do it, right? However you got in (fan vote, player vote, manager pick), if you’re next by that criteria, you go?
If thats how it is then Miguel Cabrera starts and Teixeira is in as a reserve.
http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/0.....g-results/
Think so.
Girardi just picked Konerko, so I guess not. That is actually awesome, because he’s been similar to Youk, so the Sox fans can’t yell at Joe.
Except Youk’s defense is FAR, far better these days. I know he’s nursing an injury, though, so he likely would have just withdrawn.
Albaladejo comes in with 2 on and no out. Strikes out the side and the Yanks win.
Wow SWB just got into a little bit of trouble with men on 1st and 2nd and no outs. Albaladejo comes in and strikes out the side. Why isn’t this man a Yankee!?
If Tex gets in to the ASG over Youk because of the fan voting with this whole Morneau thing, yes I know Youk has been better, but AHAHAHA I AM GOING TO LAUGH SO HARD. SO. HARD.
SO HARD.
Too late, Girardi picked Konerko.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_.....8;c_id=mlb
Good.
9 AS’s! If we can get an OF to drop out, we can replace him with Gardner for an even 10!
Nevermind, apparently Konerko’s going as Morneau’s replacement.
Still, no Youk at the ASG makes me laugh like no other, especially considering how all the Boston beat writers have been pushing for him so hardcore. They’re gonna whine. It’s awesome.
If the AL loses, you know it will all be because Girardi picked Konerko instead of a battler like Youk.
General doubt on draft picks.
If Yanks offer arb to Javy and he signs elsewhere : we get 2 picks
If we sign Lee and Crawford do we lose our original pick and the pick we got for Javy or is the that protected.
Why would we sign Crawford?
/feels very good to say that’d
Why not sign Crawford and trade Gardner while his stock is high?
80 million dollars.
Doubt he will cost that much, but he will cost enough to scare me away.
It’d be interesting to see what the Yankees could get for Gardner. Especially if you believe he can’t keep this up next season.
He’s having a phenomenal season. He has a war slightly below Cano.
Any picks we get from Javy are protected. If we signed both Lee and Crawford, Texas would get our original first-rounder and Tampa Bay would get our original second-round pick. Assuming Lee is rated higher than Crawford.
If Crawford’s rated higher, it’s the other way around.
Doesn’t really matter, since we can’t sign both, and we don’t need Carl.
Thanks.
My question was to understand the process, not suggest we hv to sign them both.
U explained it well.
No I don’t believe you can lose compensation picks.
http://wiki.soxprospects.com/M.....ick+System
^ that says that they cannot be “forfeited.”
You can’t lose compensation picks for anything. The Yanks got a pick for not signing Gerrit Cole in the first round in 2008, and they kept it even though they signed CC, Tex, and AJ.
Cool. Now i remember we didnt lose the picks we got for Gordon too. Thanks
Assuming Montero can’t catch does it make sense to put him in right next year to get ready to replace swish or do we just let him DH and spot start behind the plate.
I’m sure he will alternate with Posada to catch and DH. I don’t think it would make sense to stick him in right field unless they give him a chance to catch. Otherwise they are relying on Romine to be major league ready in 2012.
That’s possible if Romine continues to spend 1 year at every level. But I agree nonetheless.
i think he will C/DH, so I doubt they are going to change his position. It’s not out of the realm of possibility though. Just doubtful.
Cashman is determined to keep Montero as a viable catcher as long as he physically can. Montero’s only going to get stronger and might even add some more weight as he enters his physical prime. Montero’s never been noted for his athleticism, and to play the OF, even at a Dunn-esque level, requires athleticism.
I’ve always believed that Montero’s future lies as a Full-time Yankees DH. Nothing wrong with that, especially if Montero fulfills the Edgar Martinez-with-power comp.
Heyman-Hughes would have been moved to the pen
Evan Roberts-“Obviously, Cliff Lee is an elite pitcher, he’s one of the best pitchers in the sport right now, that’s how good he is. So you can understand why the Yankees would want him. But what was the plan if they pulled this off? Was Javy Vazquez going to be turned around and traded right away?”
Jon Heyman-“No. As it turns out, from what I’m hearing and I’ve talked to a few people today as well, they were going to use Hughes in the bullpen, even though he’s been an All-Star as a starter. Their plan was to have excess, to give Hughes some extra breathing room, and see how it went there. And I don’t think that’s a bad plan. If you have Cliff Lee, and you’ve got Sabathia, and you’ve got all these pitchers, you strengthen your bullpen, I think it’s not a bad idea. “
Evan Roberts-“Wow, that’s incredible. “
http://www.theyankeeu.com/2010.....-pen-19513
Sorry to self promote, but it’s a bit of an exclusive. Heyman made some news this afternoon on WFAN and I’ve haven’t seen it anywhere else.
That non-trade just keeps getting better and better.
I wonder if the plan would have been to trade Javy eventually. You still have 3 weeks left in July, so they could have reasonably moved Hughes to the pen for the rest of the month and taken their time trading Javy (it’s never good to seem desperate to move someone). Then in August and September, Hughes could go back to the rotation and still get pretty close to his innings limit.
It’s not an easy transition from the bullpen to a starter. He would need to build his arm back up, and risk getting injured because players aren’t used to doing that. Just too risky.
I read abt this on Andrew Marchand’s ESPNNY quip too.
That would have been a horrible idea.
Thanks. Twitter or website? I’d like to add an update.
I found it. Thanks for the heads up.
Sorry. But I don’t believe it. Cashman wouldn’t pull the plug on Hughes. Heyman’s waaaayy off on that one, and if he indeed heard that from “people”, it was said with the purpose of smoothing any sore feelings Vazquez might’ve experienced yesterday.
Think he tweeted it, too.
Yup. http://twitter.com/SI_JonHeyman/status/18216200923
Thats what I think too. But i feel like they would be minimizing value unless he proved to be horrible in right field. But even then he couldnt be worse than Ethier’s -12 UZR and Ethier is valuable.
Five Minor Leaguers handed suspensions “Four of the players were pitchers, including two Yankees’ prospects, Daury Aquino and Alexander de los Santos. D-backs pitcher Joel Matos and Royals hurler Freddy Rodriguez were also found in violation of the policy. All four tested positive for metabolites of the drug Stanozolol.”
http://zellspinstripeblog.com/.....nn-aceves/
so two pitchers on the DSL Yankees 2 with really high ERAs. NBD.
Travis Wood has something special going on in Philly right now.
That video is amazing. Must have been a lot of work, but it is incredible.
Cliff Lee has an era of 9.00 as a Texas Ranger as of right now.
What a bust!
Travis Wood, perfect through seven at Philly (though the game is 0-0).
JINXED IT!
If Travis Wood gets it done in Philly, we will have seen four perfect games in a season. I picked a good year to get into baseball.
2 no-no’s as well. We’re usually lucky to get one per year! This is beyond ridiculous
THIS IS BEYOND BASEBALL.
(Couldn’t resist)
This Reds/Phils game is awesome. As someone said on Twitter, the games in this series have been, like, playoff-level excellent.
NLCS preview? No wait, Philly’s going to miss it.
No idea, but it certainly feels like a playoff series.
If the Phillies get into the playoffs, I think they have a decent chance in any series with Roy Halladay at the front of their rotation, even if it’s kind of scary beyond that. I mean, that was the case last year. Though they had a better offense, but the meh offense this year is mostly due to injuries and slumping. If everyone comes back and gets healthy for the playoffs, they are obviously extremely dangerous (thanks, bexarama Morgan.).
It really is, I’m glad yankee text alerts let me know.
Holy shit, this is Travis Wood’s second ML start ever!
It’s his third, but still!
these Reds better score here
Oh yeah this could very well end badly.
If Wood throws another perfect inning and the Reds score, does he come out for a tenth?
It’s Dusty Baker, of course
Dusty will let him go for 175 pitches. But not 176. Depends what innings that happens in.
I’m pretty sure Dusty Baker would send him back out there for the 10th even if he wasn’t throwing a perfect game.
Zing!
He’d probably send him back out for the 10th even if the game is over.
We’ll finally test that theory.
He’s at 92 pitches. if he has a quick next inning then i bet he’ll be back
You can’t predict baseball, huh?
Oh god, a p______ g_____ that might have to go into extras. Halladay is still in! I’m freaking out!
I’m like hyperventilating over this game and I don’t care about either team. OH MY GOD.
I do. I hate the Phillies again.
This shit might be better than Halladay’s perfecto.
NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
ugh
oh well I applaude this kid
Well shit that’s done and over with.
There it goes.
Unfortunately, now I won’t ever know if the Philly crowd would have shown the right amount of respect and applauded him had he done it.
now I won’t ever know if the Philly crowd would have shown the right amount of respect and applauded him had he done it.
Ohhhh yes you do. (They would have reacted… poorly.)
Hopefully no one would have intentionally thrown up on him.
Yea, you don’t throw up on a chief of police.
White trash phillies fan can kiss my ass. Ruiz sucks balls too.
Wilson Valdez pinch-hitting for Juan Castro. Meet your 2010 Philadelphia Phillies.
There have been an awful lot of perfect or near perfect games this season so far.
Oh, and iPads are awesome.
What a catch!
Super ridiculously epic regular season game is super ridiculously epic
Oh man that was almost incredible
So I just realized that a score in blue on espn.com means a no-no’s going on. Not a bad idea.
I think the blue just means they’re featuring the game because of some big story line, which of course, a no-hitter is.
They had the TEX/BAL lit up in blue earlier tonight because it was Cliff Lee’s debut. They typically have any game Strasburg’s starting in blue too.
So every single Heat game is gonna be blue isn’t it…
My fantasy SP have allowed 8R (6ER) in 38.2IP this week so far. My RP have allowed 22R, (21ER) in 6IP.
Middle relief experiment is over.
Just got here. How come, with just 5 base runners the whole game, Javy used 117 pitches through 7? Were there a lot of full counts or something?
BS call.
Oops, wrong thread.
