Yanks looking to improve bench

By

Via Marc Carig, the Yankees primary goal at the moment is to improve their pathetically weak bench, which explains the Ty Wigginton rumors. “The bench is the area of priority as of right now,” said GM Brian Cashman. “That doesn’t mean we’re not open to anything else. But if you ask me what’s the priority? What’s the area of weakness? It’s the bench.” Colin Curtis and Chad Huffman were great in that comeback win against the Dodgers, but are otherwise unspectacular. Ramiro Pena is an automatic out, and Kevin Russo seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth. So yeah, having some decent reserves would be nice.

Hopefully the bullpen will be fixed shortly thereafter.

Mike, are there any enticing bullpen options even available right now? The only one I can think of is Dotel, and that’s because you profiled him a few days ago. Certainly wouldn’t want anyone from Baltimore or Arizona. Houston? Nothing I can think of.

Alas, it’s not as if this current unit is any good either, aside from Mo.

What about that “Hotspur” or whatever his name is who was playing third for the BJs? seems a gutsy guy focused on fundamentals, and hungry and nailsy enough to do whatever it takes to stay in the bigs. Also seems to have had a lot of family (possibly two brothers with biblical names from the same delta area, and maybe even a grandpa) who tried hardball but just couldn’t get it done. Or did I just read too many Decker/ Tunis books in my youth (CS Forester, too, as you can see from my attempt at his name)?

He’s their starting third baseman and I believe he’s a rookie, so extremely doubtful.

    • Joe

caught a foul ball hit by him yesterday so i am all for it lol

  • Pounder

Would not mind getting Hairston or Hinske back.

    • rbizzler

Being that the Padres and the Braves are both currently in contention, I wouldn’t hold your breath before getting either of those two guys back.

I hear that Wigginton is a huge douche… but people say that about lots of guys too i guess.

This is insane! The Yankees may have good bench help but when they rot and rot on the bench how can you tell? Russo was good then he sat and rotted on the bench just like Pena, Hoffman and Curtis. All this is going on while Jeter, Tex, Cano, A-Rod and Swisher do not get any days off. The problem is Joe not the bench.
Also why no mention of DFA Park and Gaudin and sending Joba back to the minors so he can search for his 97mph fastball.
Once again are Yankee fans that foolish that they always want a washed up hasbeen garbage like Thames and Winn on the team instead of a young player that is hungry?

By the way looks like the Curtis Granderson trade is the Worst in Yankee history since we lost not only AJ but Coke who is just a few mile s better than Marte.

I LOL’ed. We have no young players that will be both good to go against major league pitching but is also bad to be on the bench.

You didn’t know who Austin Jackson was last year do you? Coke is just a LOOGY, same with Marte, big difference.

      • Joe

You do realize Marte has better numbers than Coke and Jackson never showed power in the Minors and struck out at an alarming rate. Plus, he is hitting .180 against lefties.

Worse than Buhner for Phelps? McGriff for Murray? Bahnsen for McKinney?

You know, it’s one thing to be frustrated – we all are at times, and especially after games like yesterday’s. But being frustrated doesn’t mean you have to make utterly stupid statements.

Is it worse than Cash for Babe Ruth
or Jim Fregosi for Nolan Ryan,
or Ernie Broglio for Lou Brock,
or Ray Sadecki for Orlando Cepeda,
how about Pierzynski for Nathan and Liriano
also please consider waiting until at least
the end of the year to make such a strong
      pronunciation.

      Thanks for the laugh.

      • nsalem

actually i reread the post i was responding to and realized he
said Yankee history and I thought of
        Maris for Charlie Smith
Leiter for Barfield (which took a few years to be a “bad trade”)
        Buhner for Phelps
        Drabek for Rhoden

    • Cecala

Its been 3 months? How is it the worst trade in history?

    • JobaTheHeat62

      go away

i’m also thinking about upgrading my bench. I’m thinking of adding jessica alba and cutting scarlett johansson

    • nsalem

Send Scarlett to SWB she has a few options left and you may need her again one day

  • Dave

Can anyone explain why we don’t give Albie a shot? I mean it seems like an obvious move to me but maybe there is something I am missing. I know he has had numerous chances in the past but I thought he retooled his arsenal and added a very effective new pitch.

    • Sweet Dick Willie

I’d be willing to wager that he’ll get his shot within the next few weeks.

      • Joe

he better. better to go in house and test before we test the “market”. Truthfully, there aren’t any relievers out there that are enticing.

  • Captain Jack

This is why I’d like to acquire another outfielder who hits righties well, Russo disappeared, the team has a couple of weak hitting outfielders against lefties and if they’re able to get an above average defender in right they can DH Swisher more often (not that he needs to be…gotta improve the team where you can). Don’t get me wrong, adding an infielder is my preferred choice (though I don’t see the moves as mutually exclusive) Jhonnhy Peralta and ALex Gordon are two players I’d like to see the Yankees look at. Peralta has MINF experience, and Gordon still has everyday player upside.
