Report: Yankees to sign Rafael DePaula

Via Melissa Segura, the Yankees are expected to sign Dominican right-hander Rafael DePaula later today. The bonus is said to be around $700,000. DePaula was suspended from signing for a year after lying about his age and identity, but he was cleared by MLB’s verification process earlier this year. The soon-to-be 20-year-old (in March) was considered one of the best available this year, standing 6-foot-3 with a fastball that has touched 97 in workouts. Here’s video.

The Mariners, another Latin American powerhouse, made DePaula an offer as well.

… ain’t nothing wrong with that.

  • JobaWockeeZ

Totally unexpected. Holy crap we must have the best farm in regards to pitching. Wow good signing.

  • YanksFan

What does it matter, the Yanks can’t develop pitching anyway.

Seriously, great move. Always nice to add high-end potential to a farm system.

  • pat

All your Latin American fireballers are belong to us.

  • Thomas

Just looking at that video, he can really dial it up with a very easy arm motion. Awesome.

  • Doug

Mike, MLBTR says “He turns 20 soon”. Is it 19 (as you indicated) or 20?

    • Mike Axisa

No, he’ll be 20, I had the wrong date. He lied and said he was born April 1992, it’s really March 1991. I fixed the post, my bad.

    • Mike HC

Who knows. You can’t take any of the ages seriously even after their “investigation.” I just assume Cano is like 30 as well. I’m pretty sure the Yanks realize these ages are a joke and don’t base anything of off that.

      • Mike HC

        off of, ha

  • Reggie C.

AndyinDaytona must love this news. Finally, a signing of some note! Put DePaula in your top 20 yanks prospects list! IIRC, DePaula had the best arm in his class a couple years ago; before the suspension came down of course.

I’ve been popping champagne all morning……but just the cheap stuff…Korbel.

      Nice lunch time surprise.

I’ve been popping champagne all morning……but just the cheap stuff…Korbel.

Korbel? Damn, you’re breaking out the good stuff already? What are you, J.P. Moneybags?

        • Andy In Sunny Daytona

Wow. I’ve had my share of bad alcohol in my life….but Malt liquor champagne? Should be called Shampain?

          • tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

It’s an acquired taste. As in, you’ll acquire bad taste if you drink it.

      • Kiersten

Korbel is the cheap stuff? In college (and shortly thereafter), that’s high class.

        Andre all the way.

        • Andy In Sunny Daytona

You have a job now. Splurge.

BTW, all dry champagnes taste the same to me. The difference is in the hangover.

  • Thomas

Hopefully, his career is better than Jorge DePaula.

    • tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

      Or Rafael De La Ghetto.

    • Chris

      He had a career 114 ERA+!

  • vin

Do we know if he’s ready to come to the US in 2011? Or will he spend a season in the DSL?

    • tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

If he’s 19-turning-20, I’d hope he’d be old enough to at least make the stateside jump right away and go to the GCL.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Keep in in the DSL to learn a thing or too from Melvin Almighty.

      • Andy In Sunny Daytona

It’s hard to come up with a birth certificate when you’re immortal. After 9/11 it’s tougher for deities to get into this country.

  • Yank the Frank

What does a 20 year old Dominican equate to in non-Dominican years?

    • pat

MLB chopped off a fingertip and counted the rings to confirm his age. He’s legit.

      Mi abuelo

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

I bet a 16-year old Evan Longoria would not have been signed by a ML team. I see why these Dominican players lie about their age, it seems like if they’re not physically mature at 16, no one looks at them again.

Not to mention Daniel Nava….when he was 16 he was 3’2″ and weighed 34 lbs. /Gammons’d

      • tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

I can’t wait to see how big Dustin Pedroia gets to be when he finally turns 16.

        • I Voted for Kodos

He’ll only get smaller, grittier, and, therefore, better as he approaches puberty.

  • vin

Might this be the “small” deal Cashman has been working on?

    • Granderslam

Good point. Probably. Unless a trade for Justin Upton will be considered “small” (kidding).

  • What Won’t Jesus Montero Do f.k.a. WWJMD

Cliff who? But in all seriousness I find it hilarious Cashmoney prefaced this by saying it was a small deal. It’s not like he signed the best free agent but it is one of the top Dominican arms of the year.

  • jimmy

all other Gms in baseball just sighed “he was signed by the ninja, damn!”

  • Uke

Speaking of Ninja, use it’s awesome, lol

  • Avi

Here’s an article from BA on DePaula (no subscription needed)
Mid 90′s FB and an advanced curve? Good get for the Yanks.

  • murakami

If we officially have DePaula under wraps, then that is awesome.

  • murakami

We’ve been on DePaula for what seems like forever. Maybe the age thing helped us. Even though I’m bummed hearing we sent Miranda to Arizona, I am just crazy stoked we got DePaula.

    It’s like winning the lottery.

    • Jamie

We sent Miranda to Arizona?? Can you elaborate on this please?

      • Jamie

        Sorry…just read about the trade.

  • Not Tank the Frank

    Bonus. Arodys who??

    • murakami

Actually, his low effort delivery and effortless velo makes me think of Arodys.

Arodys who? Arodys whom we gave away for NOTHING, that’s who.

Would love to still have Arodys to go with DePaula and Jose Ramirez.

      • dr mrs the yankee

I agree, though Arodys was my pet prospect so I miss him a little more than most.

Yeah, nice video. That hook (the second pitch) looked very sharp.

  • yankees1717

    LOVE this.
not much of a bonus for a guy who could really be a good player even on the yankees, whether it be as a reliever or a middle starter.
