Mariano Rivera Jr. commits to Quinnipiac

Via Matt Eisenberg, Mariano Rivera Jr. has committed to attend Quinnipiac in the fall and will attempt to make the baseball team as a walk on. Mo Jr. trying to walk on? Walk on water maybe.

Lame humor aside, you might remember that Senior and Junior visited the campus back in December. “My mind was already set then,” said Mo Jr. “I had to show [my father]. He liked some of the stuff and he fell in love with it, from security to the people to the faculty. He liked it; he liked it a lot.” According to the article, he owns a pretty standard fastball, slider, curveball, changeup repertoire, but not his father’s famed cutter. For shame. I’m setting the odds that the Yankees draft him at some point this summer at like, 3-2. Even that seems high.

  • Total Dominication

Mo can teach it to him.

    • Sabermetrically Challenged

      He better

  • vin

Might as well draft him… worked for the Dodgers & Piazza.

    • Gonzo

They better make sure to ask Mo first. You don’t want a CHW, Ozzie, KW incident.

  • mbonzo

It would be too bad if he doesn’t end up with the Yanks.

  • A-ROD fan

    How old is the kid?

    • Kiersten

      I’d imagine 17 or 18 if he’s graduating HS.

  • Sabermetrically Challenged

Now here’s a difficult question, is mojo allowed to wear #42 because of God’s permission? Or is it still not allowed with permission of the number’s retiree?

    • Will (the other one)

Is Mo trumping Jackie Robinson in this scenario?

    • Mike Axisa

There’s no chance anyone ever wears 42 again, nor should anyone be allowed. I’m usually anti-retired number, but that one can’t be touched.

      • Sabermetrically Challenged

there has to be some kind of loophole because of the fact that he has the same legal name as his father

      • Dino Velvet

I say they officially retire Eddie Gaedel number

  • zachy b

faced him on varsity last year when he was a junior, nothing special lol

    • Sabermetrically Challenged

That’s what scouts said for God after he was signed for a $1700 bonus

  • steve (different one)

If the yankees draft him, we might have to start calling Montero “the other Jesus”

If I were walking around campus and Mo passed by on a tour I’d pretty much have a heart attack.

On a somewhat related note, A-Rod (and Jorge to a lesser extent) worked out at my campus all the time in the offseason and I never once saw them. Sad.

  • Marcus

You gotta laugh at how many athletes name their kids [Name of Player] Jr. I mean, as hard as it is going to be for that kid to live up to expectations already, you give him the same name also?

    • steve (different one)

True, but if he’s 17-18, he was named before Mariano became MARIANO…

    • The Constant Gardner

It worked for Ken Griffey Jr….. and, um, Tony Gwynn Jr.

      • Plank

        Maybe Delino Deshields.

  • Ori

They should retire ortiz’s number throughout all of baseball, because he broke the ogre-barrier

    • Pat D

OK, I have to admit, I definitely lol’ed at this one.

      And I’m ashamed I used internet-speak.

    Serious question:

You’re a high school pitcher, looking to do it and college. Obviously you want to do well.

    Your dad is Mariano Rivera.

How do you not learn the cutter?

    • Mister Delaware

Why didn’t Reid Ryan learn his dad’s 100 mph fastball?

    • Corey

      cutters dont break metal bats

      • The Big City of Dreams

There is a first time for everything

  • Bryan L

I’m going to Quinnipiac this fall.

    • Mister Delaware

I looked at it when I was choosing schools. Lender, the bagel guy, is an alum and huge donor. And I’m 90% sure Pagliarulo went there but I’m too lazy to look it up.

  • Plank

In other Yankee related news, what is Babe Ruth’s grandniece’s dogwalker doing for Easter?

  • Another Bronx Dynasty

If GOD really is a Yankees fan than Mo Jr will be drafted & by the Yanks & Sr will teach Jr the famed cutter.

Imagine another decade and a half of another Rivera coming out of the pen to Enter the Sandman!

  • Will

To paraphrase Homer Simpson, the kids can call him Mo-Ju.

  • Rich Under Achiever

Jr. doesn’t even play for his HS team. If you want to play in college, why are you not playing in HS? Especially, walking around with the name Mariano Rivera. How do you not learn the cutter?
He probably has the best coaches money can buy, hangs around MLB players all the time, and trains with his dad, and STILL no cutter.

Would anyone look at this kid at a D1 school if he wasn’t from a famous yankee? I guess certain rules don’t apply when you are a wealthy under achiever.

  • jko09

Sorry dudes, but Mariano’s kid is not Mariano. There’s a reason he chose Quinnipiac, as it is probably the weakest DI college baseball program in the country. Essentially, they take D3 quality recruits and get lucky every once in a while. They cant go after quality D1 players unless they have had discipline problems or criminal records, as they have facilities that could be considered poor for a high school program, let alone a D1 school that just spent 200 million dollars on arenas for their hockey and basketball programs. QU also has a senile idiot coach and literally no pitching or hitting coaches. This is really Mariano Jr’s only chance of playing D1 ball, because the other side of this is that he just isn’t good enough to play D1 ball in any other circumstances. And the reason he cant throw the cutter is because you CANT throw a cutter unless you can throw it 87+ mph Not knocking on him or anything. Its probably just a shitty situation for him where he is expected to do something he just cant do and shouldn’t have to do.
