Keith Law’s Updated Top 25 Prospects
ByKeith Law posted an updated list of the top 25 prospects in baseball today (Insider req’d), and Jesus Montero jumped from number four in the preseason rankings to number three. That’s only because Domonic Brown graduated to the big leagues though, Montero basically maintained his spot. “I’m holding on this one,” said KLaw, “because I think he’ll hit and no one is reporting anything significantly wrong with him except over-eagerness at the plate; I imagine there’s some frustration that the Yankees are employing a guy hitting .174/.292/.348 in a spot Montero could fill.” He has no idea.
As for Manny Banuelos, he jumped from number 12 to number eight, again because of graduation more than anything. “Not a great start to the year, although the stuff is largely intact (if not quite as electric as it was in the AFL last year) … every source save one said he was still an elite prospect in their views, worthy of a top 10 spot.” Unsurprisingly, no other Yankees cracked the top 25 even though three others cracked Law’s preseason top 100 list.

Can’t decide what’s more annoying Anthony Ranaudo or Arodys Vizcaino being on the future watch list.

Arodys.
Does it matter? We have ManBan and Betances, it’s all good.
Ehh, if only I could limit what was annoying to stuff that mattered.
Two top twenty guys? Meh, I’ll take it. Casey Kelly and Anthony Rizzo also cracked the top twenty, the Adrian trade may end up working pretty well for the Pads.
Two top eight guys. Top twenty is for suckers.
He’s having a slightly better 2011 yet outside of this I haven’t heard much from him in the media. Oh wells he’s only a potential number two anyways.
As far as trading either of these two or anyone else in the farm, it feels like a bridge year is coming with jeter and A-Rod’s decline and the instability in the rotation. I’d hesitate to make a move that’s too heavy onthe “win now ” side.
They’re in first place with the best run differential in the league. It’s not a bridge year.
I wasn’t saying that this is the bridge year, it could quickly turn into one if Garcia or Colon turn into a pumpkin…but the team looks like a big playoff contender this year. They’re getting huge contributions from Colon and Freddy, which I’m glad that it’s happening, but I’m not so sure that will continue to happen next year or even for the rest of this year. I don’t think this is the bridge year, but I can see one coming next year with AJ, Jeter, and Alex a year older. Bridge years happen, I’m not trying to bitch or be negative about it…but when two top 40 players of all time go into their decline years their franchise is going to suffer. The Rays and the Red Sox are two pretty good franchises and some years the Yankees are going to miss the playoffs. I’m thinking that might be next year given the overall state of the rotation. Because of which, I think they should value players like Betances, Banuelos, Brackman, Romine, Montero, and even some of the lower level players like Mitchell, Flores, and Sanchez very highly.
Bridge year? If we’re lucky one of the B’s and Montero will be up in 2012 and that’s IF someone doesn’t trade them. That’s to much of a transitioning period.
But I wouldn’t dish out prospects too unless some CLiff Lee esque pitcher this the market. I don’t think it’ll happen though.
That’s not much of*
Pretty sure they’re not trading Manny or Jesus for a trade out of desperation. They offered Jesus for Lee & Halladay, they’re not going to suddenly offer Jesus for Joe Blanton.
Supposedly they offered him for Soria.
I remember hearing that too. But when I read that rumor however long ago, I started coughing and sneezing violently because I’m allergic to bullshit. Still am.
If KC turned that down he should be fired.
If Cashman offered that for only Soria he should be fired.
Yeah, I don’t think they’ll deal a Betances or a Brackman for a Beltran or something like that. If they’re going to trade some of the big chips make sure they get a kick ass player. I have faith in Cashman and the Baseball brass not named Randy Levine, so I’m not too concerned.
