Golson, Noesi, Pena and Kontos heading to New York

Betances may soon join Yankees
Open Thread: Labor Day

The Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees finished up their season with a win today, and Donnie Collins reports that the quartet of Greg Golson, Hector Noesi, Ramiro Pena and George Kontos are heading to New York to join the big league team. We’ve seen Golson, Pena and Noesi before, but Kontos will be the new face. The righty reliever struck out 91 and unintentionally walked just 25 in 89.1 IP this year, his first full season in the bullpen following Tommy John surgery. Kontos would have been Rule 5 Draft eligible after the season, and the Yankees will have to make room for him on the 40-man roster.

I’ve always seen MR in Kontos as far back as 2007. I’d like to see what he can do. They’ll probably need Noesi tomorrow night since the pen had a rough afternoon…good moves.

i was going to ask why whelan didnt get called up but now we know who the 40man spot loss will be

    • Am I the only Kevin?

That’d not be the best idea, no? Perhaps Laffey or Proctor will be DFA’s since they were pitched today and have no chance of being retained in the offseason.

I knew that. Updated the post later to added Pena, forgot to change it.

I’d like to see Greg Golson nail Crawford with a strong throw from the OF one more time only with Crawford in a Sux uniform this time.

He’ll nail someone if he gets the chance. Any Red Sock will do.

    • Thomas Cassidy

No chance. Crawford has to get on base first.

Might wanna change the “trio” of four players to a quarter

I have been a big Kontos fan for years. Thought that he actually had starter stuff before the injury. This is so great to see him make it. The kid has a huge heart and some pretty nasty stuff.

    • Am I the only Kevin?

Agree. His slider is a legit strikeout pitch, so he’d be a nice stealth addition to the back of the bullpen like Robertson was. Give him Ayala’s innings as the last short relief guy in the bullpen for the rest of the season and see if he’s ready for a spot next year.
