a balk!!! hahahaha.
hahahhaha balk.
Patience, young Padawan.
Jesus will not be pleased with his rbi being balked away.
Jesus works in mysterious ways.
ooops, swung at ball 4
Great research about our catching depth
Cmon Jesus!
Clutch.
JESUS!!!!!!
Jesus!
Monster!
Jesus
Jesus broke his playoff cherry!
Hey-Zeus!
Yankees have all the momentum.
Sweet baby Jesus!
is it just me, or does Betemit suck at defense??
It’s not just you.
Only thing he’s good at is trading to Kenny Williams for players he dislikes.
All of a sudden I am so relaxed. Weird.
Jesus fucking Montero.
The first of many
I wonder how many boobirds aren’t posting right now because they’re busy sucking on AJ’s nuts.
At the end of the day, you’ve got to play the actual game.
there have been a lot of bed wetters on this site lately, pissing at the first sign of trouble.
So, both of you thought he’d go 5.2, 1 r? I admit I wasn’t keen on AJ having to pitch a win or go home, and I think it was only natural for most people to think the same, given his season.
I thought he would throw 3 solid innings and Joe G would pull him for Hughes.
I did not know if he would allow a run or not. But, yes I thought he would be effective and I thought we would go to game 5, which I think we will win.
new name: Jesus!
Put this bitch in the win column.
I’ve seen Montero hit a post season RBI, I can die happy.
Hopefully, you’ll see more against Texas.
HOORAY JESUS!!!
Uh oh, we may be entering. (Cue the impending doom music)–AYALA TIME!
Too late to put Proctor back on the roster?
I say DRob and Mo get an inning no matter what, which means we’re entering (doom music) – non-save zone.
I don’t care how many runs they score here; I still want RoMo to remove all doubt from the game
anything less than a ten run lead, absolutely
and really Mo should pitch no matter how big the lead is, he could use the work
Hip hip Jor-Jesus!
The power of Jesus compelled that balk.
ladies and gentleman, the jesus
I really like this Albequerque guy.
Tiger fans should get on Leyland for leaving Coke in to face Arod, Teix, and Swish as much as we got on Joe for bringing in Ayala. There’s no rationale for it. Teix and Swish are far better hitters from the right side.
A-Rod AND Tex AND Swisher get hits in the same inning????? WTF???
Jesus is loose!!!!
And a balk??? 6-1 Yanks!!!
Game 5 is within reach indeed. Just hope we don’t blow our wads today and shoot blanks tomorrow.
Thursday. We have an off day to go back.
Refractory period FTW.
Jesus got a playoff hit off a righty???
Analysis paralysis.
Dude has torque and bat speed like no one else on our team (except Cano).
Good eye, Russ, keep the pressure on.
nice lolpen.
Game over. Don’t screw around Girardi. RoMo!
comerica is a library
/sterling’d
its funny how montero now has the same amount of hits as a-rod in the playoffs
and a bit sad.
yeah mostly sad
If the Tigers want, we can give them Ayala, heard he’s pretty good out of the pen
I say let Hughes try and finish this one out. I want Robertson and Rivera available for 12 outs if need be Game 5.
The odds of that happening are very remote.
yes 100% agree, if he can keep runners off base
THE GRAPH LOOKS G00D……
What a fucking game. See you in New York, Detroit. Nova’s gonna fuck ‘em up.
Who pitches Thursday, Fister, right?
yup
The Great Albuquerque hasn’t exactly had a dazzling series
Jesus has more RBIs than swisher and teix combined
he walks on water and causes balks
he’s tied with Swish at 1
I will gladly take losing my under bet tonight for a bases clearing double. Let’s get this so RoMo don’t have to both throw an inning.
I sure would love the prospects of having SoRoMo available for the last 4-5 innings of Game 5, no matter what score.
Let’s get there first!
Nova will have 9.0 IP anyway.
Right, I’m talking about the 10th-15th innings.
If anyone cares, Arizona is up 3-1 in the 5th inning.
What’s an Arizona?
Poor Al Albuquerque, two postseason games, two bases loaded situations, for a rook. Bad Jimmy L.
girardi to pena: should I bunt gardner?
::Pena burns The Binder::
ietc
We are going back to New York!
I hope Yankee stadium has the red carpet out for Valverde
dude, Gardner with RISP is ridiculous this series
Gardner is the man, he’s like a ’96-’01 throwback. Ice water.
The Best Bullpen In Baseball****
I am not a big Girardi fan (as an in-game manager) but putting in Montero over Jones and green lighting him 3-0 was so nice and forward thinking.
Gardner for clean-up hitter on Thursday.
GARDY!
If we’re fortunate enough to make the ALCS do you sit Gardner vs the Texas lefties with the way he’s swinging the bat?
I hope not. Andruw can DH.
Jesus will DH.
Even better, as long as Gardy still plays.
Leyland’s really fucked up the pitching matchups here. All the people who hit lefties best are getting their at bats against them
I guess this is a big Fuck You to Valverde
Valverde’s thrown over 50 pitches in the past 2 nights, no?
Still, fuck you Valverde.
Girardi has managed a brilliant game tonight. He had the bullpen ready at the first sign of trouble and pulled AJ quick to avoid trouble.
Not really.
Results make him look good, but you have to like how he’s playing the bullpen today. If he can manage with the same urgency Game 5, Tigers might need an early Nova implosion or an absolute shutdown from Fister to win it.
I am already hoping for a Montero ab in the 9th.
I want another one this inning.
Verlander doesn’t look so cocky now!
Mo needs at least a batter or 2 tonight.
Apparently according to Darling and Smoltz Fister pitched better than what his line indicated in game 1. 4.2 innings 6ER is bad no matter how you look at it. Sorry fellas.
I would say they are right. He left with the bases loaded and all three inherited runners scored. If he had stayed in, they would have probably not all have scored.
Where is that troll stuart a? Nothing to complain about??
Tigers pitchers have timed their bullpen implosions quite well. By run differential we might be nearing a sweep.
take out girardi’s bad pitching decision making re: garcia, cc, avila, and that might have held true. oh well, cant complain we get one more shot in the bronx all things considered.
Burnett is an animal.
Tex and A-Rod have back to back hits.
Montero has an RBI.
Who saw this coming?
Ayala for the 8th and 9th, I should probably add.
why ayala? you close this game out def by using d-rob. hes fresh and theres an off day tomorrow. f that mediocre middle relief bs, step on their necks.
ok, now its 9 runs, i amend; can use some garbage unless a couple runners get on.
lol Jeter….even with Bases loaded and no pressure you still swing at a pitch out of the zone
Man, Jeter looked struck out three separate times in that at bat
whoever closes this out should dance in the mound
really don’t see Mo doing that
it’s a 7 run game. Mo better not pitch today
he’s thrown 3 pitches since last Tuesday, and they have an off day tomorrow, he will likely pitch, he could use the work
where are all the trolls who said the season was over?
This is fun.
I say again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TWGPFpeyPw
TBS seriously thinks the Yankee pen is going to give up 6 runs? Not happening.
Where have you gotten that impression?
“If they go back to the Bronx.”
they have to say that; they cant definitely say its going back. i actually hate when announcers speak in absolutes either way.
What a rally.
Just don’t hit a homerun… that’ll kill it!
That was the weirdest wild pitch I’ve ever seen
Release the Ayala!
wheels coming off
save some bad mojo for thursday, tigers
Schlereth is even uglier than his father is.
Where did all the Debbie Downers go? Each spillover thread gets progressively more optimistic. Did the whiners log off? Past their bedtime?
probably using different usernames!
Probably so. Something makes me think most of them have actual usernames like sawxfan or yooklover.
If Cano gets a hit, I think we could see Hughes.
or maybe Wade. Save Phil.
I’d still bring Mo in for the 9th to get him an inning of work.
This inning is awesome.
BABIP gods are smiling upon us. Save some for tomorrow boys.
Cano!
Detroit Demons exercised
My heart needed this inning.
You speak for all of us
mercy rule: ayala
Game / Set / Match….Good Night
I’m still a bit worried. Valverde GUARANTEED they weren’t going back to Yankee Stadium
Yes — fuck him
nothing quite like enjoying a Stella and a Yankees win
Amen!
I have definitely whined during the darker times, but this is great, most relaxed I felt all series. I really don’t think it is that unnatural for a die hard fan to take that roller coaster ride between highs and lows, but, to each their own.
All these runs are actually making the bullpen decisions tougher for Girardi. Who do you throw here in the 8th? Ayala? Hughes? Or stick with Robertson?
Probably not Robertson, just because he’s pitched. Mo should still get an inning in
I’d prefer it to be maybe 1 or 2 outs (just in case they force 20+ pitches out of him), but I’m with you.
Not Ayala
I would go with Hughes for the eighth, just to take a look since he hasn’t pitched yet, and Mo for the ninth, since he’s only thrown 3 pitches in the last week (or maybe just the last out or two)
The only thing is that Hughes is probably the de facto long man game 5 if, say, Nova gets injured early, so they might be thinking to keep him rested.
one inning would be somewhat the equivalent of a bullpen throw day for a starter, but keeping him available for multiple innings on Thurs. is why I think he’ll likely only pitch 1 inning today
Excellent point. It’s played out that way exactly.
Is this lead AJ proof? Ow wait. Never mind!
Save some runs for game 5 please.
my blood pressure desperately needed this inning…
AHEM!
I’ve never been so happy to tell somebody this: You were right, congrats.
Lets hope I’m right about the Nova v. Fister rematch.
Ok smartass, now who do you like in the third race at Belmont tomorrow?
Girardi – Please go against your binder and give Robertson and Mariano some work. Mariano has thrown 3 pitches in this series. We’ll need him sharp. Send them out there.
Fuck Ayala. He and Logan could give this lead back. See Game 162. Don’t do it.
hughes is good for work here; mo for a batter or two to finish would be good to keep him well oiled, not that he really ever needs it.
A-Rod with two hits this inning? What the fuck is this?
Maybe 2009 redux??? They’re warming up, or so it seems. Let’s hope.
I think ARod’s back
Lol now Smoltz is saying this is a “good loss” for the Tigers. what an idiot.
I can’t believe I’m missing these gems. Thank God for my selective hearing.
I was honestly just thinking, “wow, I didn’t hear that at all…have i started subconciously ignoring Smoltz?” (If have thank god, and it only took 4 games lol)
I don’t agree with his exact wording nor with any loss being a “good loss”. But I think most people would rather lose 10-1 than 2-1. I can see what he’s trying to say,
We’re getting the band back together, everyone is getting warmer.
Smoltz trying to play this off as a “good loss” for Detroit. It’s always good when you put yourself on the brink of elimination.
This guy is an asshole. It’s kind of amusing though.
This guy is an asshole.
—————————
The guy is Rambo
/Wallstreet’d
Good loss for Detroit if you’re a Yankee.
Seriously WTF is he talking about? Verlander can’t pitch anymore. They are going back to NYC for Game 5. They are getting beat 10-1. A good loss???
remember, he is an ex-tiger farmhand, and very anti-yankee = dumb biased statements.
Still bitter about ’96 and ’99…
Smoltz: “Mariano Rivera has not gotten a save in only to serieses…”
I have to give him credit for the Delmon Young first pitch fastball call and the “at ‘em” ball from AJ in this first inning.
I don’t think A-rod finds Miggy too amusing at first…see him talking right away when he got over there?
Miggy was asking A-Rod if he wanted to go out for drinks tonight.
Yeah, and Miggy even offered to drive.
A-Rod said no, he’s going to a titty bar.
save some runs for thursday boys!
I feel comfy with SuperNova on thursday.
If he comes up big in that one, it will plant the Pettitte 96′ seed within him.
So can Ayala pitch 2 innings?
But hey, Darling noted that the Yankees had 4 runs off Verlander yesterday. Smoltz is sure that Verlander through a no-hitter.
Gotta say this Detroit pitching staff has not been that impressive when anyone not named Scherzer is pitching
Yeah, that dude whatshisface yesterday that was pumping in 100 mph+ fastballs in the 8th inning, he’s a bum.
I wouldn’t call 9 innings, 5 earned runs in the series “impressive”, especially for a Cy Young lock. CC has a decent game yesterday and this series is already over.
Scherzer ERA: 0.00
Verlander ERA: 5.00
Detroit team ERA: 6.69
Detroit team ERA for pitchers not named Scherzer: 8.07
Justin Verlander says hi
Hughesy!
I like using Hughsey here…see what ya got
Phil Phor the Phinish. Phuckin Phantastic.
Anyone else find it funny that there are Scotts grass seed ads on the benches and yet the grass at Comerica looks like shit? If I was the ad exec I would be pulling funding right fucking now.
Pretty sure Scotts is the official grass seed of MLB.
Granderson’s wearing center field on his jersey.
Hueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees
Hughes breaking ball looks frickin good so far.
Well, for me the best thing about the inning was the two ARod hits. Hell, even that fly-out of Tex’s at the end sounded like it was whacked. They’re not back in New York YET, but things look a lot better than they did around 8:30.
AJ deserves a Roman-style triumph in the Bronx.
Hughes at 95, me gusta.
So this has gone from a
1. 5 game series, Yankees with the homefield advantage, Tigers with the pitching advantage.
2. 3 game series, Tigers homefield advantage, Tigers pitching.
3. 1 game series, Yankees homefield advantage, Yankees pitching.
ninety phive phor phil! I’m just phillin’ in phor the other commenter.
And the best part is that tomorrow we can watch some stress free baseball.
Right, this has made watching those games much more palatable.
Damn Hughes looked pretty good.
I’ll take one of these Phil Hughes for ALCS
Philthy.
Wow, Hughes looked incredible there…
Oh man, if we can have this Hughes outta the bullpen for the rest of our playoff run….
Certainly no reason to ever see Ayala in a winnable game if this Hughes is available
Ayala shouldnt sniff the mound anywhere near +/- 5 runs rest of the series. Wade, Hughes, maybe logan, then big three, that should be it.
Hughes breaks out the lawnmower…
Those were some Philthy Pitches.
That’s an extremely impressive inning from Hughes.
Hughes looking good.
Hewz 2 da bullpen!!!!
Phil Hughes missing bats, you’re eating onions, you’re spotting dimes, I don’t know what the hell is going on.
IETC
They were mailboxes, you idiot, I didn’t have the heart to tell you!
Phil. Hughes.
wow Phil wow.
so Hughes looked pretty sharp, it would be great if he could be another reliable weapon out of the pen
I thought A-Rod may have done it in 2009, but I was wrong. Hopefully, AJ did it tonight. What is “it”? Kill the narrative.
AJ doing what he did tonight just..doesn’t…fit… the narrative.
But here’s the truth: he’s just a professional athlete who is more prone to volatile performance than most. He’s not a head case. Head cases hurt people and are not fit for normal society. That’s a headcase.
Contrary to popular belief, he was not “guaranteed” to pitch poorly. Nor is he suddenly cured of “mentally ills” that held him back. He located his fastball better (for the most part) and got lucky on some hard hit balls. That’s it and that’s all.
Maybe, just maybe, this will lead the sports pundocracy to forget about narrative and leave the pop psychology where it belongs: in freshman literatures seminars.
Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure it would be foolish to hold my breath…
Never happen. They live for narratives.
I remember Mike Schmidt saying, after the Phillies finally won the Series in 1980 after many playoff failures, that the difference between the current team and the ones that had been deemed “chokers” was a few hits that fell in, maybe on pure luck, and that it was idiotic to credit anyone’s Character for that.
Needless to say, no one in the press backed up his thought.
95?!?!?!!?
Team Hero: AJ
nuff said
Yup, and a number of honorable mentions, starting with Granderson for the two, possibly game-saving, catches.
I know Hughes can’t go all-out in his starts because of their length versus relievers’ one-inning stints, but, man his stuff sure looked good. Let’s hope he can have a dominant postseason out of the pen and then use it as a springboard to a redemptive 2012.
overall awesome win for the good guys.
Anderson just said Cabrera struck out Hughes. Rooting for Detroit just a little, Brian?
I personally have really liked Anderson’s calls.
Good for you.
TBS inane banter spoken in monotone is my lullaby.
Wait till we listen to Joe Buck.
Did Smoltz just say that AJ is not very demonstrative? Does he know the meaning of that word or is he just talking out of his ass?
I think we all know the answer to that question.
Jesus Jesus Jesus
I love this guy.
Jesus is not impressed by your postseason pitching.
Montero can’t be stopped.
I love Jesus
Does anybody know Sterling’s home run call for Jesus? Does he have one yet?
Jesus is loose or has been turned loose. It’s dumb.
Yuck I agree with Big City of Dreams, he better do some work on that this offseason “_____ is loose” is reserved for Mike Mussina.
Hopefully he adds something to or changes it completely during the winter.
Jesus!
Okay, this Montero kid……2 at bats, 2 hits. LOL!!!
Stop cheering morons
This Montero kid can get 2 hits off a righty? In the same game? In the post season?
/stunned
Jesus not caring about tiger pitching
He gives zero shits about tiger pitching.
Montero can’t hit righties. Ignore the complete body of his professional career. It’s science!
(I know Jorge has hit righties well and has been the Yanks best hitter in the playoffs. I have no problem with him starting over Jesus against righties. I don’t like all of the quotes from Girardi that make it seem like Joe G sees Jesus as a straight platoon player. Straight up ignant.)
It seems like platooning players is how Girardi starts all his guys. Don’t forget that Gardner started out as a platoon player this year.
Politics and respect for all of Jorge’s service. Montero needs to bat every game he is healthy next year. He should be looked at the same way Jeter and ARod are looked at. Everyday player.
Lineup lock. He will crush equally.
I want a Super Nova avatar for Thursday. Anyone?
So since Ernie Harwell was traded for a player…can we trade Cervelli for Heidi Watney??
Adjusted for Boston she’s a 34 out of 10.
ietc
I think she’s a player.
I like hearing about these old timers from other teams. For once I don’t mind having to listen to the announcers bullshit.
ha, how do you still have your anti yanks sign still held up: ‘go to sleep ny’? good job tiger fans, good job.
Yea we’ll go to sleep, with a victory! Ha!
Best game of the season? Best game of the season.
Great job, Boone!
What a game. Absolutely huge.
Suck it Valverde, you’re heading back to the Bronx!
Who is this Boone Logan who strikes out the side? He’s been really good lately.
And LOL at John Sterling’s lackluster “The Yankees win”, in a but-I-announced-it-two-innings-ago way.
Fister?
I barely even know her.
Heyoooooo!
Boone Logan strikes out the side to end the game!!! Who woulda thunk it?
Now what were these very same announcers saying about momentum??? Yeah, they aren’t saying the same tonight. Shocking.
/shamelesslybiasedannouncing
Wow, I was reading something…completely oblivious to what they were talking about in the game knowing it was about to be over. I never heard them call the end on it. Their monotone-ness never changed throughout the end of the game. At least pretend to be semi happy about the win in the both.
PS why are they chanting asshole at Grandy in the stands? I thought he was a well liked player in Detroit?
he’s their enemy now
So? I dislike the Red Sox, and hate a good number of them, but I’d never chant asshole at Aceves, he was much to valuable to us while he was here and it isn’t really his fault he’s gone.
I wasn’t watching. I wonder if it was 20 something’s, i.e., post-adolescence. A time of dependency coupled with pseudo-defiance and anal aggression.
Taken personally seeing as how I’m 21 =P
It didn’t show them though you just heard them chanting it from right behind the interview.
Most likely drunken slobs from Toronto.
Monotone when Yanks score and are winning, screaming in excitement when Detroit scores. Predictable haters.
It’s the stadium effect. Loud noise = loud call. Quiet stadium = subdued call. It goes both ways. Re-watch Cano’s grand slam and see what I mean.
Consider the context: Empty, silent stadium. Blowout game. Anything more than a conversational tone would sound over-the-top.
If the Tigers were blowing out the Yankees in the 9th inning in Yankee Stadium, I’m sure the TBS crew would be reviewing the plaques in Monument Park while a Detroit pitcher strikes out the side to end the game. I’m sure Darling and Smoltz have plenty of anecdotes about Bill Dickey.
Most well liked players that join the yankees automatically become hated.
And the man was traded, he didn’t leave on his own. The stupidity of some fans…
Boone Logan. Wow.
Curtis Granderson really is a class act.
Fuck yes.
I just hope scoring all these runs they dont have none left for thursday
If they score runs on Thursday, we’re all in trouble.
Tomorrow’s a day off.
Joe Girardi laughs like a nerd =P
If only he understood the stats like one.
Hahah. Joe has an Industrial Engineering degree from Northwestern, there’s probably a reason he laughs like a nerd.
http://twitter.com/#!/Yankees/.....to/1/large
damn what a photo.
Wish that was a bit larger. Would make an awesome Desktop background.
