Yankees outright Kevin Whelan to Triple-A

Via Anthony McCarron, the Yankees have outrighted Kevin Whelan to Triple-A Scranton.. He was designated for assignment last week to make room on the 40-man roster for Hiroki Kuroda, but no team claimed him off waivers. Whelan will remain in the organization, and at the moment I have him penciled in as SWB’s closer, the job he held last year. As you probably know, he’s the last remaining piece of the Gary Sheffield trade from way back when.

Whatever happened to Humberto Sanchez? The key piece in that deal. I remember reading a scouting report on him. He had sick stuff.

Speaking of Humbertoes, Humberto Quintero is where now?

  • Fernando

Wow, no one took a chance on him. You’d think the Mets, Astros, Twins, A’s. etc could have found a spot for him.

I agree. Given the kinds of guys who get gobbled up in the Rule V draft it seems like there’s a decent chance he could make some teams bullpen.

It maybe timing. Every team is faced with a packed roster, looking to move players about. There may be other players just like him passing through waivers every day, but no opening on teams’ rosters.

So is he the new Colter Bean? Late 20s AAA reliever with no control to speak of that people still dream on because he can get the Gerald Williams of the world out in AAA? And despite evidence that no other team sees anything in him either, people decide that the Yankees are screwing him over and dedicate websites to “freeing” him?

I think Colter Bean got a lot more love then than Kevin Whelan does now.

I don’t think the Colter Bean comparison is fair. Whelan throws mid 90’s. Bean threw junk. The knock on Whelan is lack of control, though last year it looked as if he finally got a handle on those issues (with the exception of his brief call up).

If he repeats his performance from last year, either the Yankees or someone else will give him a shot.

      Bean –> Britton –> Albaladejo

If for some ungodly reason Whelan needs to be called up sometime this season, who’s the Reegie Corona on our 40 man in 2012?

  • AC

At time they said he was highest ranked pitcher in DET system too. Crazy. We don’t do real well trading with Dombrowski.

how’s that curtis granderson trade working out for ya?
