Yankees made offer for Brendan Ryan

Via Jon Heyman, the Yankees made an offer for shortstop Brendan Ryan, but it was declined by the Mariners. I suppose they were looking at him to replace Ramiro Pena and be part of that third base platoon while Alex Rodriguez is on the shelf. Ryan, 30, can’t hit a lick (61 wRC+ this year, 77 career) but is arguably the best defensive shortstop in baseball. He also has experience at second and third.

The Yankees would have been able to keep Ryan next year as a arbitration-eligible player, so I wonder if acquiring him would have made them more comfortable with trading Eduardo Nunez for … Chase Headley? I dunno, speculate at your own risk.

How’s he hitting against lefties? Slight Nix upgrade maybe?

    • RetroRob says:

Nix has shown good power against lefties in his career, and this year as an .800 OPS against them. Ryan will never hit that well.

      He’s a glove man. Period.

  2. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Do you really think that Nunez would be the guy to hold up a potential Headley deal?

If the Yankees still have big plans for Eduardo Scissorhands, they’ve had a funny way of showing it this season.

  3. Knoxvillain says:

No thanks. He sucks wang. Defensive is nice and all, but I have no problem with Nix/Chavez/Pena right now. But seriously, M’s? Do you insist on sucking forever?

  4. RetroRob says:

He’s the anti-Jeter. Both are providing at 2 WAR in value, one with the glove, one with a bat. Put them together and we have a HOFer. Actually, we already do.

He’d be nice to have just because his glove is so good, but he’s so good that Girardi would have to bring him in for defense at SS with a lead after seven innings. Can’t wait to see what reaction that would get.

  5. E-ROC says:

Isn’t Ramiro Pena the equivalent of Brendan Ryan? That trade seems like a waste.

I don’t care if Ryan is Ozzie Smith, we need someone who can hit.. I’m sick of people thinkng our offense is so awesome.. Its not! Tonight we got a guy on 2nd with no outs, down a run, and again lost and stranded the runner.. This team needs players who can hit to mesh with the HR power..

Aramis Ramirez makes sense… Of course i have no idea about his contract status though, but he’d be a great fit in this lineup…
