Yankees juggle upcoming rotation

The Yankees have decided to use yesterday’s off-day to juggle their rotation a bit. To make a long story short, everyone will pitch on regular rest rather than get the extra day except for Freddy Garcia, who was bumped back to accommodate the rest of the staff. Instead of Hiroki Kuroda, Garcia, and David Phelps against the Orioles this weekend, it’ll be Kuroda, Phelps, and Phil Hughes. CC Sabathia, Garcia, and Kuroda will start the three games against the Rays next week.

“There’s not one exact reason (for the juggling),” said Joe Girardi this afternoon. I’m guessing Hughes’ home/road split had something to do with it, ditto breaking up to the two innings-eaters in an effort to spread out the bullpen rest a bit. Freddy will only face the Orioles once rather than twice as well, and they’re the closest competition right now. So yeah, doesn’t seem to be one reason in particular.

    Smart move.

  2. The Real Greg says:

I like this. The Yankees understand the importance of this series and have juggled their rotation accordingly.

I would prefer Garcia against the Rays because of their now slumping offense.

  3. Better off Eddard says:

Gives us a better chance to win the series. Phil is coming off one of his best outings. Nobody beats Hiroki Kuroda in Yankee Stadium. The Rays just don’t have a consistent enough offense to win enough ballgames. One week they’re getting perfect game’d by Felix, the next they’re getting shutout by the Royals, Darvish and Carlos Villanueva.

    • Laz says:

Anytime you can limit freddy pitching is a good thing. He has been valuable depth this year, I just don’t want to see him pitching if they can help it.

  4. Kevin says:

    O’s are 56-0 if leading after 7…that can’t stand.

    • Rocky Road Redemption says:

      Yeah, that’s just nuts.

The O’s are just such a bizarre team. If I were a fan of them I’d be loving it but as a Yankee fan they drive me crazy.

    • RetroRob says:

It can’t, but neither can their record in one-run games. Yet that doesn’t mean their historic run won last another month. They’re just having one of those seasons.

    • Mike says:

Would be interested to see if they get their first loss in that this weekend and the Yankees get their first win. Wonder when something like that happened this late in the year

Any loss that could have been a win is a 2 game difference in the series. The difference between being up 4 games (if Yanks win 2 games this series) and being up 2 games (If Yanks win 1 game this series) is huge

  5. Should be excellent in pitching. Not happy with the crew we’ve been assigned of umpires though.

  6. Hoss says:

Tomorrow is Binder Day at the Stadium. Do you need any further explanation?

  7. Edmond says:

I hate the Os more than the rsox! They were nothing. I hope we beat them. This looks like a good pitching matchup!
