Heyman: Mark Teixeira will participate in WBC

By

Via Jon Heyman: Mark Teixeira will suit up for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic in March. He’ll be joined on the team by Andy Pettitte. Robinson Cano (Dominican Republic) and Frankie Cervelli (Italy) are also scheduled to play in the tournament.

Teixeira, 32, has a history of starting the regular season slowly, so maybe the WBC will help get him on track a little earlier than usual. Then again, I feel like we say something similar before every season. Those four guys are likely to be the only Yankees to play in the tournament unless David Robertson sneaks onto the USA roster, which will be officially announced on Thursday. I suppose Josh Spence could crack the Australia roster as well. Hiroki Kuroda and Ichiro Suzuki have already announced they will not play for Japan (the two-time defending WBC champs) while CC Sabathia, Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera are all coming off surgeries. I believe the club can prevent them from playing.

I’m not as concerned because he’s not a pitcher, but in general, I wish no Yankees would play.

Why are the N.Y. Yankees allowing these guys to play?

Petite is too old and injury prone
Cervelli has a problem with concussions
Teixeira’s been hurt, and his averages are all falling.

And why hasn’t Cashman trades Cano away already?

are they allowed to tell them not to? This might be part of the CBA that it’s up to the player.

Also, if you’re dealing with a player that isn’t coming off surgery it could be a bad PR move if they disallow a player to participate.

I can hear the sports-talk callers now “The Yankees are un-American!”

Pettitte is old, but not “Injury Prone”, unless there is a specific part of the WBC that I am not aware of that requires you to sit there and have line drives shot at your extremities.

Cervelli’s concussion problems should not limit him to play anywhere at any time. One could say that getting Frankie as many reps as possible is to the benefit of the team he is competing for a starting spot on. And for someone that no one wants starting on this club, this doesn’t seem like something we should care this much about, no?

Tex… well, I could agree with the injury concerns. But his averages could in fact be helped by starting earlier than March (see the above article).

And Cashman hasn’t “trades Cano” yet because he doesn’t want to and you shouldn’t want him to either. This isn’t the Astros, we’re trying to win a ring around here. Trading away the BEST 2B you will likely see in your lifetime doesn’t fit the mold.

I’ve also got three kids in private school in Greenwich, Connecticut. You don’t have three kids in private school in Greenwich, Connecticut, do you Turtle?

  • 189 million

This news makes my hamstrings hurt.

  • Preston

Maybe this helps him avoid his usual slow start.

  • KeithK

I doubt playing in the WBC will do much for Tex. Tournament games just replace a few spring training games, right in the middle of the ST slate.

  • B

I can’t believe the cervelli would participate.

you think trying to secure the starting/backup job in ny after spending the year back down in aaa would be more important. Weird.

*waits for joke about Chris Stewart representing Shitsville*

      hehehe…

Some people enjoy representing there country and playing the game that they love for the colors of their nation…. I see nothing wrong with Yankees playing in the WBC, am actually glad they are doing it.

      Isn’t Cervelli Venezuelan?

      • Austin Aunelowitzky

Raised in Venezuela but of Italian descent.

      • The Doctor (formerly known as G formerly known as Matt Smith formerly known as David Tennant formerly known as etc)

Italian ancestry. Perhaps he feels more strongly attached to that.

        • MannyGeee

Also, I am going to guess, much like Johnny Damon playing for the Philippines THIS SEASON, that you can probably on that Italy Roster with a little less competition than Venezuela.

        • fat jeter

          they do have better colors

        • RetroRob

Perhaps he’s also taking into consideration that Salvador Perez and Wilson Ramos are from Venezuela, and he would have little chance of catching! (BTW Have no idea if either are scheduled to play. My guess is Ramos won’t since he’s recovering from injury, and may have no desire to ever return to the land of his kidnapping.)

  • Joe R

Maybe this will help him to run out of excuses for starting slow.

I thought the Yankees had already told Cano he couldn’t play? Wasn’t there a story on this site stating as much?

    • Andy Pettitte’s Fibula (formerly Manny’s BanWagon)

I thought the same thing but it was winter ball, not the WBC.

    • http://rivaveblues.com doug

My bad, it was the Dominican Winter League Playoffs… http://riveraveblues.com/2012/.....all-80837/

  • theyankeewarrior

Can’t wait to hear how Tex’s quad, ankle, foot, hamstring and and back are sore come April 4th.

  • I’m texy and I know it

    C’mon guys..let me play.
After all, I’m the best American 1B.
P.S.- Give me ideas to make my twitter feed more interesting.
    :)

  • blehmann

They said Cano could not play in the Dominican Summer League.

  • Gonzo

C’mon guys. I’m disappointed. No one cracked the joke about this being his last chance at a title.

  • Robert

Look at it this way, this opens up playing time for the rookies at these positions at Spring Training.Guy that could benefit besides Romine is Tyler Austin who can play 1B and OF.

Cojo and Adams could benefit also in the infield.

When does the Spring Training roster get announced?

    • MannyGeee

Future HoF’er Ronnie Mustelier approves of this comment.

    • Bob Buttons

Whenever Cashman finally convinces Hal that he should take some money out of Get Hal Some Action Foundation and use it to bring more guys down to Tampa.
