Yankees call up David Adams, designated Chris Nelson for assignment

The Ichiro Problem
Update: NHL will play two games at Yankee Stadium next January

3:59pm: Yep, Nelson has been designated for assignment. He had a nice little two weeks in pinstripes, specifically going 8-for-26 (.308) at the plate in the last seven games. Nelson was always just a stopgap until Adams could be called up.

3:45pm: The Yankees have officially called up infielder David Adams, the team announced. No word on the corresponding roster move just yet — they need to make both a 25-man and 40-man move — but I’m guessing it’ll involve Chris Nelson. They’re completely redundant.

Adams, who turns 26 today, hit .316/.407/.490 (155 wRC+) with three homers in 26 games for Triple-A Scranton this year. They Yankees couldn’t call him up any sooner because of some silly roster rules, but he is expected to get a chance to play everyday with Kevin Youkilis on the DL. Adams started his career as a second baseman but shifted over to third in the second half last year, exactly when Alex Rodriguez had his hand broken by a pitch.

I was hoping they’d choose to keep some left side of the IF depth over whatever purpose Ben Francisco doesn’t really have, especially with ARod, Youk, Jeter, and Nunez all still injured.
But alas, it appears the Ben Francisco experience will live on.

    • jjyank

I agree. I was arguing that point in an earlier thread. While Nelson and Adams may have some redundancy, Francisco is just a dead roster spot. I don’t see any reason to waste a 25 man spot on him, regardless of any similarities between Nelson and Adams’ positions.

      • trr

Ain’t that something? Sombody else said it, and it’s true:
Francisco has 9 lives. By my count, he can survive for 5 more cuts!

  • jjyank

Welcome to the bigs, Mr. Adams. Looking forward to seeing him play!

    • Larch

      I’m irrationally excited.
      2013 splits: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=adams-002dav&type=bgl&year=2013

      vs RHP as RHB: .309 .405 .456 .861
      vs LHP as RHB: .333 .412 .567 .978

I don’t think it’s crazy to expect him to be at least league average vs LHP.

      • jjyank

I like to temper my expectations with non-elite prospects, but I am at least confident that he can be an upgrade over his replacement. I look forward to seeing if he can surpass my cautious attitude.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Adams batting 6th tonight.
    Welcome to the bigs.

  • Eddard

You know what’s redundant, Ben Francisco! Nelson has at least done something. He had 2 hits last night, which matches Francisco’s entire production as a Yankee. If Nix plays SS and Adams plays 3B then Nelson can be the backup to both. Francisco is no longer needed because Ichiro is the backup outfielder.

  • Max

Was Nelson really so bad that they had to sacrifice yet more infield depth? Does David Adams have a better chance of being productive?

    • Brian S.

Chris Nelson had a .230 wOBA. So it would be pretty damn hard for Adams to not be as productive.

    • Havok9120

      Yes. Yes he does.

Maybe not hugely more productive, and maybe not a high chance, but still yes. And keeping them both on the roster is positionally redundant even if Nunez is out for an extended period.

      • Brian S.

I would say there is definitely a high chance. Chris Nelson had a 35 wRC+. Adams will probably triple that.

        • Havok9120

I could see it. I could also see him slumping hard at just the wrong time. Or him having a great week until MLB pitchers find a gaping hole in his swing.

You’re probably the most bullish prospect guy on here. Doesn’t make your wrong, but we’ve seen too many prospects crash and burn for me to let my expectations be so….untempered.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Nelson has been below replacement level over 700 MLB PA, career 83 wRC+.
Who knows what Adams will do, but it’d be hard for him to be worse, and he could potentially be much better. I’d say definitely worth a shot.

As for the depth, I would have preferred they keep Nelson for the time being and drop Francisco instead, but there’s a chance Nelson will clear waivers and be outrighted.

  • Havok9120

Happy birthday Dave. Time to bust a move from the six-hole.

  • Brian S.

Play him everyday until Youkilis comes back. I kind of want Nelson to be DFA’d over Francisco just to make sure that this happens.

  • Rick

Congratulations and good luck to the young buck.

  • Brian S.

Francisco’s wRC+ is only 7 points lower than Nelson’s. And he can play outfield. I want him off the team just as much as anybody but it makes sense to DFA Nelson here instead and get rid of Francisco for another person that isn’t complete trash.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

I’m not sure him being able to play OF is a big deal. With Gardy, Grandy, Wells, and Ichiro, he shouldn’t play OF, except in case of emergency, which as a role Nix can fill.

    • Havok9120

I agree. I can see the arguments for preferring the depth (especially since Adams is hardly the picture of health), but having 3 UTILs and a converted 2B on the roster at the same time makes me cringe too hard to be for it.

  • Havok9120

Meanwhile, San Diego has been helping us out this week. Always nice to get some help from unexpected places.

    • vicki

      go preachers.

  • SDB

    Excited to see Adams tonight.

I just wonder what incriminating photos Francisco has to remain on the roster.

    • trr

All I know is Girardi’s face gets red when he’s asked about him.
      Somebody check that goddam binder

      • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

        ^^^THAT DAMMIT.

      • jjyank

These binder jokes are so old. Enough already.

Besides, you know that Girardi doesn’t cut people, right? If Cashman wanted him gone, he’d be gone.

        • vicki

i dunno. maybe they’re so old they’re fresh again.

  • mitch

So when exactly does Francisco go?
    Nunez for Gonzalez
    Tex for Overbay
    Youk for Francisco? Adams?

Playing no position and batting right-handed is going a long way.

    • trr

imagine if Wells ever got hurt?

      • mitch

Maybe they give Neal a shot over Francisco now that he’s healthy?

  • Matt DiBari

I’m pretty sure this means Ben Francisco will be here until the rapture

    • SDB

      Probably after, too.

The rapture may claim true believers, but I don’t see what use there’d be for a non-hitting, average throwing righty outfielder even in an afterlife.

      • trr

what use is there for him here?

  • Jacob the OG

ridiculous, I don;t care if francisco is an OF and nelson is an IF BEN CANNOT HIT A BEACH BALL!

  • Ranebaeu Dix

He’s gonna suck! Mark my words.

    • jjyank

      Mariners fan, I presume?

  • Vern Sneaker

I now hereby declare Ben Francisco a non-person on RAB. If a person appears in a game in a Yankees uniform announced as Ben Francisco, that player shall be referred to as Brenda Jones.

  • pat

But I thought Brian Sux0r Cashman hated Adams and cut him just to be spiteful?

    • Sweet Dick Willie

The comments when Adams was cut were unbelievable.

I don’t claim to understand all of Cashman’s moves, and I certainly don’t agree with all of them, but the one thing I do understand is that he has a fuckton more information on which to base his decisions than I have.

But yeah, he’s the Sux0r because he traded for Javy. TWICE!!!!!

      • jjyank

“he has a fuckton more information on which to base his decisions than I have.”

This. Seriously, 1,000 times this. It’s something us internet arm chair GMs forget way too often.

Not that no move can be criticized, but too many people forget that the Yankee front office in all likely hood does a far better job than any of us could do.

  • steves

Hopefully the Yanks can stash Nelson in minors (thought he was more athletic/versatile than Gonzales). Once Nunez and Youk are back Adams and Gonzales won’t be on the 25 man anyway so sort of much ado about nothing.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

I think there is a chance Adams sticks over Francisco when Youk comes back if he performs well enough.

  • vicki

    all the young dudes!

    Another addition to the Wannabes

  • shittyshittybangbang

Defense ? I know 3rd is new to him.

  • tommmy cassella

what i can’t understand is why the yanks sent nuno down. all he did was pitch eight scoreless innings. i thought keeping him would be a no brainer. asman han proved he is an asshole. like i previously said the yanks should trsde that piece of shit to kansas city for eight steaks, fourteen cheeseburgers and for good measure some baby back ribs. from my point of view, that’s all he is worth.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They’re in first place with half the team on the DL.
