Yankees sending Williams, Austin, and O’Brien to Arizona Fall League

Heyman: "Forgone conclusion" that Joe Girardi will be back next year
Game 132: Just Win

The Yankees are sending OF Mason Williams, OF Tyler Austin, and C/3B Peter O’Brien to play for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League after the season. Each team sends seven guys to the AzFL, so New York must still name four more players. Expect most if not all of them to be pitchers. The entire Scottsdale roster is right here.

Josh Norris says Austin (101 wRC+) will spend some time working out at first base with the Scorpions. He’s played the position plenty in the past. Austin was placed on the Double-A Trenton DL with a bone bruise in his right wrist in mid-July, though he did play in his first rehab game with the Rookie GCL Yanks this afternoon. He’ll be making up for lost time in the AzFL. Williams has had a down year at the plate (87 wRC+), so hopefully he’ll rebound in the extreme hitter’s environment. O’Brien has had a strong year (146 wRC+) and will look to continue progressing.

Lets hope Austin was just trying to gut out a bad wrist injury, and that will explain his subpar year.

As Yankee fans, that’s what we’d like to believe since it’s explainable and offers hope for a rebound. What we don’t want to believe is that he just might not be as good as hoped.

Yet I do think there was something going on. Understandable he got off to a slow start. AA is a big dividing line, and players often stuggle there at first. He was also young for the league. After a slow start he was coming on strong before he went into a tailspin again right before the injury was announced. Reports of lost bat speed were around. Kind of unusual for one so young, so that’s why I’m guessing an injury played a plat.

Looking for a strong rebound in 2014.

Smart move. All three have rather important 2014 seasons to look forward to.

Definitley OK with this. These guys could use the work, and as Robbie said, 2014 is HUGE for all…

Why 1B for Austin? Is the wrist a problem for throwing?

  • Spaceman Spiff

Why are they playing him at first? because the outfield is packed or because thats his future position (hopefully not)?

  • Preston

Austin is back in action playing RF in the GCL got two base hits today.

  • Andrew Brotherton

Tyler Austin was 2 for 3 today with 1 run scored for GCL Yankees 2

has any minor league system fizzled out more than the Yankees? None of the OF’s did anything (Austin, Williams, Heathcott, Flores, etc) that would indicate that they are any where near ready. None of the pitchers did much of anything. It’s fair to say that we don’t have one top line prospect right now.

    • Robinson Tilapia

How dare Mason Williams, who started the year in A ball, not seem ready.

Even the most “ready” of these prospects started out in AA.

By contrast, the team the Yankees are facing tonight has had an entire rotation’s worth of actual homegrown MLB-ready pitchers either get derailed or not amount to anything near their billing in the past several years.

It’s fair to say that we don’t have one top line prospect right now.

So you don’t think Sanchez is a top line prospect?

    • Yanks

Except that guy named Gary Sanchez who is a unanimous top 40 prospect and is a 20 year old catcher who can hit and catch…… and Rafael De Paula who showed nasty stuff but is probably gassed since he’s thrown a lot more recently than he has in the past couple years….. There’s a lot more to the system than the three outfielders (Flores isn’t a top prospect since he’s a tweener OFer)…

There’s also been the emergences of Bird, Avelino, Jagielo, Cave, Refsnyder, Davis, Vargas, etc…..

      • All Praise Be To Mo

Plus the 3 #1 picks we just got in the system.

Fuck ! The Yankees have under-achieved in minor league development and drafting, it’s been already discussed, delineated and confirmed by your deity, Mr. Axisa. Cut-it-the-fuck out and let people speak their mind…., and rightfully so !
