Jeter voted in as starting shortstop for AL All-Star team, Tanaka and Betances also selected to roster

Yankees hang on for unnecessarily close 9-7 win over Twins in series finale

As expected, Derek Jeter has been voted in as the starting shortstop for the AL All-Star team by the fans. His double play partner will be Robinson Cano. Masahiro Tanaka and Dellin Betances will also represent the Yankees at the Midsummer Classic. The full All-Star Game rosters are right here.

Jeter will be playing in his 14th All-Star Game and starting at short for the ninth time. His performance this year doesn’t really warrant the selection, but he’s a star of the first order and fans want to see him in the All-Star Game in his final season. That’s what the All-Star Game is all about in my opinion. Tanaka and Betances are obviously very deserving of their selections. They will be the first Yankees rookie pitchers to make the game since Spec Shea in 1947. Congrats to all three guys.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

    Congrats, captain.

Liking that DP combination for old time’s sake for sure.

    Dellin is in!!!

Question is do the Yankees want him to get rest? He’ll be there I’m sure

    • vicki

can’t ask him not to live out a dream, but if farrell uses him for more than one batter i call bullshit.

    • Deep Thoughts

Sweet. *Now* we have enough for a package to get Price. ;-)

    • RetroRob

I’m sure they’d love him to have rest, but they don’t really have control over that unless he’s injured. One additional inning pitched won’t matter in the greater picture, but it would have been nice to give him at least four days off.

It’ll be exciting for him. Glad to see him make it.

  • forensic

I just wish the ASG didn’t count so I could be more excited about some of the guys making it that I don’t really agree with.

    • http://www.twitter.com/mattpat11 Matt DiBari

Unless you think a) This particular Yankee team is going to the World Series b) They desperately need home field in that series and c) Derek Jeter is going to somehow singlehandedly cost the American League the game, I can’t imagine caring that much.

      • forensic

I never mentioned Jeter in my comment. There are guys other than him that fit that category. And while I don’t believe it will end up affecting the Yankees, I’d still want to see the best players out there and I’d want to see home field determined the correct way.

        • vicki

it’s probably silly to nitpick these squads, but how does mfiky not make it? i would’ve wanted a more deserving starter than zimmerman as well.

and matt carpenter? no morneau, no upton. worst manager pick since laRussa took lance lynn?

          • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Agreed. Untuck has been lights out.

  • Jimmy

Absolutely. When the guy passing Honus Wagner in all-time hits has his last season, how is he not the starting all-star SS?

  • Reverse apache master

Go Dellin!! Crazy to think he will end up with around 150 k’s from the pen.

    • Slap-Ass

IDK. He seems to be slowing down a little with the K’s. His arm may fall off by then too.

  • Cool Lester Smooth

    That guy from Seattle, huh?

He’s alright, I guess. I’d love to see him in pinstripes, though

    • Chip

Not worth sacrificing the future for though

    • RetroRob

So would I, but another ten year deal is not something the Yankees need. I suspect for at least three seasons it will be difficult watching the best 2B’man in the game playing for Seattle, but the decline will begin and the backend of the deal won’t be pretty. Hopefully Refsnyder can make an impact in the next season, which will make it easier.

      • Alfernon blackeood

Right, watching the decline of McCann Beltran and ellsbury will be much more fun.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

Beltran’s will be over much sooner, and let’s not put the cart before the horse yet on the other two.

  • forensic

Good stuff for Betances. It’d be kind of nice, though, if he (like Tanaka) didn’t pitch in the game and got some good rest instead.

    • JGYank

Part of me really wants to see both of them in there for entertain purposes (plus I’m curious how they would do) and part of me is concerned about them getting fatigued and I’d scream if they got injured…

      • JGYank

        *entertainment

  • BigBlueAL

BIG congrats to Betances. Its a great story he is living out this season.

  • stuart a

congrats to Dellin. He deserves it big time…

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

From potential minor league wash-up to All-Star in his first full MLB season. A mighty, mighty congratulations to an NYC born and bred New York Yankee in Dellin Betances. Couldn’t be prouder.

    • hornblower

AL rookies of the year Tanaka and Dellin. Start of a new era. Love it.

    • Looser trader droids FotD™

      Clearly, Cashman failed. Amiright?

  • ropeadope
  • Ethan

No Chris Sale blows my mind.

    • RetroRob

      He probably should be starting.

      • JGYank

I would say it’s between Felix and Tanaka and since Tanaka will be unavailable I’d go Felix (Sale would should get the ball if not for those 2). Sale certainly should be there. Don’t care how good Kazmir or Buehrle were in the first half.

      • forensic

He missed more than a month on the DL and because of that has thrown 50 fewer innings than Felix. Sale’s been awesome when on the field, but I can’t overlook that much missed time. Given that Tanaka is starting on Sunday, and thus can’t pitch, I would start Felix.

  • Dalek Jeter

Matt Wieters being voted a starter is a fucking joke. Dude’s played 26 games and has like 112 plate appearances. This is why homefield shouldn’t be up for grabs.

  • Hiroki Kureddarda

Like Mo last year, Jeter should be ASG MVP regardless of what he does in the ballgame. This is a celebration of his career above all else. Hiro should start, Delin should close as a tribute to Mariano. Hiro should start regardless of whether he pitches on Sunday or not. That’s such an antiquated rule.

  • JGYank

14th selection for Jeter in 2014. Coincidence? It’ll be special. Congrats to him, Tanaka, and Betances.

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

And just a few months ago Dellin was considered a bust around here…
Big congrats to the hometown kid.
