Yankees place Kelly Johnson on 15-day DL, recall Chris Leroux

Carlos Beltran resumes throwing program
Scouting The Trade Market: Minnesota Twins

The Yankees have placed Kelly Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain, the team announced. Right-hander Chris Leroux was called up from Triple-A Scranton to replace him on the roster. Bruce Billings was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man spot for Leroux.

Johnson left last night’s game with what was initially called a cramp, but he went for an MRI that showed the strain. Leroux was scheduled to start for the RailRiders today, so he’ll be able to give the Yankees a bunch of innings out of the bullpen if needed following last night’s 14-inning marathon. Hopefully the three-man bench, eight-man bullpen setup will only last a few days.

Are they just going to stick McCann at First until Tex comes back?

    • MB923

Yep that ssmes likely. I think Tex is only out maybe 1 or 2 more games

Knowing the Yankees, they’ll probably try Brendan Ryan at 1B (and they already have if I’m not mistaken)

      • Old Man Time

Ryan played 1st 7 innings over 4 games.

  • Adam

It’s really only a two-man bench considering Teixeira is hogging a roster spot with his latest “injury.”

    • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead

Using quotations like that implies you don’t think it’s actually an injury.

      That’s a pretty large accusation.

Or you just don’t know how to use quotation marks.

      • Old Man Time

It’s “Adam”…that’s all that needs to be said.

    • Get Phelps Up

      That selfish bastard.

  • Chip

What possible purpose does Leroux serve? The Yankees already have a long reliever that they don’t use in Jeff Francis.

The pen didn’t really get abused last night at all – D-Rob and Huff were the only guys to throw multiple innings.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

Leroux is someone they can DFA tomorrow for that same 40-man slot. It means they value everyone else on the 40-man more. He’s as extra as an extra arm gets.

      • cheese at the knees

Sadly, the Yankees’ 40-man roster is littered with guys you could DFA tomorrow and suffer no long-term impact on the franchise.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

So is everyone else’s. Spend about 15 seconds on MLBTR and look at who is in DFA limbo at any time.

          • RetroRob

The Yankees probably manage this part of their roster as well as anyone. They have a core group of quality relievers, and then they have a stream of guys shuffling back between AAA and the Majors then to the DFA list. Players are constantly being picked up and added. They keep the rest of the pen fresh.

A+ to the front office on this.

    • MB923

Maybe he is here just for tonight’s game to use up innings in case we get another long game tonight?

      • I’m One

Yup. Gotta believe that’s the case, then DFA him if necessary. They did use a few pitchers last night.

        • MB923

Francis was their last one…..guess it would have been Ichiro after should the game have continued on for awhile

    • Scott

      Chip,

About this time tomorrow, Leroux will be back in Scranton with a position player on his way up to NY. Don’t look too much into this. If Phelps is getting killed in the 2nd inning (which I think is highly unlikely given the way he has pitched and Texas’ pathetic Yankee like offense), Leroux is the long man.

He is an insurance policy, nothing more.

      • MB923

Yep. Only question is who do they bring up tomorrow. Another IFer? OFer? Could be anyone. Is Sizemore still with the team?

        • Scott

I think it should be an OF’er. Wheeler is now the back up IF. Sizemore is at SWB but on the AAA DL.

        • swizmo

If it’s Refsnyder, it would probably break RAB.

          • Cheval Anonyme

It won’t be Snefryder. They already have three second basemen up, and the best thing for Snef and the Yankees long-term is to have him play out the year in AAA.

  • Ben

I’d assume that once huff and Francis have a couple of days off leroux will be shipped down for almonte or another outfielder.

  • Coolerking101

Not going to pretend I expect much out of him, but geez, call up Roller already. At least he’s got some pop in his bat and plays 1B. Let’s not trot out Cervelli everyday so McCann can play 1B.

    • Chip

      THIS!

Roller has cooled down some from his hot start but at least he’s a 1b and can maybe hit a few home runs for a team desperately in need of power.

    • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead

Unless Roller plans on pitching a few innings tonight, I’m not sure he’s going to be much help.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

If Tex is going to miss much more time, then absolutely.

If he’s just going to miss a couple of more days, it’s not really worth the 40-man roster move.

  • Frank

What a poorly constructed roster. The back up first baseman, who never played the position until this season, is now on the DL. So, to replace him, they use another player who has never played the position until this season. And if he gets hurt with Tex out, then who plays frst? And only 3 OFs as Beltran can’t throw. How do they not bring up Almonte rather than Leroux? I realize they had a long game last night and used a lot of pitchers, but how do you go into tonight’s game with 3 OFs? That just speaks of how bad their farm system is that they don’t have an OFr worth a damn they can bring up. It’s obvious they have no faith in Almonte.

    • MB923

I’m sure Almonte will be a Yankee again by tomorrow, barring another very long game tonight.

      • Frank

But that doesn’t help them tonight.

        • MB923

No but Leroux will if it goes late. If it doesn’t, hopefully it’s a quick 9 inning game (with a Yankee victory of course) and they get Almonte tomorrow.

        • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead

          *mumble mumble mumble burrito….something something*

        • Get Phelps Up

Neither would Almonte if there’s another long game.

          • Frank

It’s not about a long game, it’s if they sustain an injury.

            • MB923

Injuries can happen to pitchers too. You’ve overthinking this. I will say if Leroux isn’t gone by tomorrow then I’ll be surprised, but I can bet you he is only hear because last night’s game went 14 innings. And unless tonight’s game goes to extra innings, he will be gone after tonight (I assume)

              • http://twitter.com/#!/Clay_Bellinger Clay Bellinger

The only reason he’s here is last nights game. I can’t fathom why anyone is complaining about this.

                • MB923

                  Exactly

              • Scott

I would bet 1,000 Jorge internet dollars you are correct.

            • Get Phelps Up

Well, it’s not likely that Gardner, Ellsbury or Ichiro will get injured enough to have to come out of the game.

If one of them does, then Wheeler has played OF in the Minors this year and even Headley was a full time outfielder a few seasons ago.

Calling up Almonte would leave them at risk in case of another long game. Calling up a pitcher leaves a risk in case of an injury to an outfielder. There was no one move that could have been made to completely avoid playing short for a game or two.

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

I thought you were only watching two more games this season.

      • HansDavenport

Why bring up Almonte if Girardi won’t play him?

    • TheGhostOfEricDuncan

I wouldn’t say the farm system is bad because they don’t have an outfielder to bring up. Most of the talent is just at AA or lower. I’m personally glad they don’t bring up Refsnyder just to potentially trot him out to right field. Almonte or Pirela would have been nice tho.

    • Cheddard Headley

McCann or Frankie will play 1st, the other will catch. Zelous can be backup 3rd/OF. But they should have brought up Zolio, hopefully they do after the arms get some rest tonight. I suspect BGDP will give them the game of his life against Darvish.

      • MB923

And if 1 of those 2 get hurt God forbit, Joe will put Brendan Ryan at 1B.

      • Frank

But what if McCann or Cervelli gets hurt? They have no other cather. If an OFr gets hurt tonight, they’d have to stick Ryan or Wheeler in the OF.

        • Get Phelps Up

If McCann or Cervelli got hurt then the catcher would be…the one that’s not catching.

          Just like last night…

          • Frank

            Then who plays first?

            • Get Phelps Up

              Ryan or Wheeler probably.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting & Defense

The same person that would play first in that scenario even if they called up Almonte … Brendan Ryan.

            • Jorge Steinbrenner

Why do you care? You’re only watching two more games this season.

      • Scott

I actually agree with you for once. I think due to Texas’ crappy line up and the competition he is facing (Yu), that Phelps will pitch well tonight.

Now will the offense score for the Yanks? That is debatable. I said before the start of this series I think the Yanks go reverse lock on Yu and pound him. I’ll stick with that, but I know it is a long shot.

        • MB923

After looking terrible against 2 pitchers with terrible stats, are we due for a breakout performance against one of the games best? I say YES!

        • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead

Phelps has actually pitched well lately regardless of competition.

  • Pego

Once Leroux goes down, assuming Tex is ok, there are a few options. Personally, I vote for Zoilo. The organization clearly doesn’t think much of him, but Ichiro has been a zero lately. Just see what he can do. He’s already on the 40 man roster. What is there to lose? We have enough infield depth (again, assuming a healthy Tex).

    • Frank

The first thing is the Yanks never got a bonafide backup first baseman in the off season knowing Tex was coming off major surgery and not knowing how he would react to that surgery. Fortunately, that hasn’t been an issue for him. But he has had other nagging injuries. Yet, they go into the season with an unproven Kelly Johnson as the backup.

      • Deep Thoughts

You’re busting chops becaues they didn’t build a roster around a backup first baseman? Seriously just stop.

        • Scott

          +1

          • MB923

            +2

        • Jorge Steinbrenner

He posts here and bitches every day, yet said the other day he really was only going to watch two more games this season, Jeter’s farewell, and Jeter’s last game in Fenway.

That should show you what his comments are worth.

      • HansDavenport

C’mon really? Seriously, you’re just splitting hairs. How often do you actually have a play at 1st base where you need a tested back up?

        • RetroRob

          Sarcasm?

If not, every time the back-up 1B’man is out there, which is a lot, sadly.

  • Chip Rodriguez

I’ve got a hunch that Team Sizemore will be rejoicing tomorrow morning.

    • Scott

I would say you are on to something but he is on the AAA disabled list.

    • Jorge Steinbrenner

He’s on the DL, sadly, saving the world.

      • Jim Is A (Bored) Peckerhead

We actually underestimated how awesome he is.

    • HansDavenport

Now Girardi would play him. Probably in high leverage spots. A tried, true and tested, mediocre, journeyman.

  • the Other Steve S.

Who the hell was Bruce Billings?

    • MB923

He is the son of Bruce and Emily Billings.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Bruce really lived up to his Billings.

        I’ll show myself out.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Bruce really lived up to his Billings.

        I’ll show myself out.

      • HansDavenport

        Of Billings Montana

  • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

It just never fucking ends with this team. Has any team outside of the Rangers been hit with this many injuries this year?

    • Josh S.

The Rays were hit pretty hard at the beginning of the season in their starting rotation.

      • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

True, but their current rotation at least resembles a major league rotation as opposed to a 4A rotation.

  • Scott

On a completely different topic, I really thought the O’s would fold in the second half, they have one good starting pitcher and had a brutal schedule. They lost 2 of 3 against the A’s, no shame in that. Then they traveled to LAAAAAAA (whatever they call it these days) and have taken the first two, much to my chagrin.

Is their offense good enough to carry them through the rest of the year? Was I wrong to think they will fold?

And what about Seattle and Toronto, will they be problems for the Yanks in the Wild Card hunt?

    • D23

Don’t count the Os out. They got one of the best offense in MLB, and ranked top 5 in AL in pitching. They are going to be the team to beat in the AL East. They also have the weapons to make a trade or two…

  • jpk

Leroux for a day or two till the pen is rested again then he has to go for a either Almonte, or one of the these Murphy, Romine, Pirela, Roller.
Romine has been playing a decent amount of 1B and been better with the bat lately then Murphy. Also same as if Murphy got the call it would free up either Cervi or McCann to backup Tex.
Pirela would give them another multi position player especially one that has seen time in the of and 1b lately…
Roller is a option just as a 1b which is needed
Almonte only really solves a issue that should have been resolved a while ago…. which is the total lack of production from RF

  • Scott

    I laughed

    • Scott

This was meant as a reply to The Other Steve and MB923’s posts about Billings.

  • D23

Not sure where some of you are saying that we have enough arms in the pen available tonight? Warren, Huff went back to back games, Betances pitched what 3 of the last 4 games. Thornton is in the same situation. No long relief guy is available and got to bring up an arm like Leroux. As some stated, he will be there only for a day or two pending on the outcome of tonight’s game.

Wheeler is providing to be valuable utility player that can play pretty much anywhere except CF.
