Earlier today, the Yankees designated first baseman/outfielder Garrett Jones for assignment, the team announced. The move clears a roster spot for the recent acquired Dustin Ackley. Joe Girardi confirmed Ackley will fill the same role as Jones: seldom-used backup outfielder and backup first baseman, plus he’ll take some grounders at second.

Jones, 34, hit .215/.257/.361 (67 wRC+) with five homers in only 152 plate appearances this season. He had a brutal start to the season — 6-for-40 (.150) in the team’s first 41 games — but kinda sorta picked it up of late, hitting .240/.288/.413 (92 wRC+) in his last 111 plate appearances. Jones did hit one huge home run this season, so thanks for that.

The Yankees acquired Jones in the Nathan EovaldiMartin Prado trade this past offseason and still owe him the rest of his $5M salary, which is a relative drop in the bucket. Brian Cashman explained they replaced Jones with Ackley because Ackley is younger, more versatile, and under team control beyond this season.

Still dont.get this trade. Ackley is terrible.

    • Deep Thoughts

He is Cashman’s new (two-point-)Six Million Dollar Super Utility Man. “We can rebuild him. And his swing.”

Greatest TV series opening of all time.

  • MattPat11

I’m not certain this is even a lateral move. But I’m certainly not going to die on the Garrett Jones hill.

  • just_add_bacon7

Welcome to the 24th or 25th spot on the roster. You and Brendan Ryan can battle it out for the right to be last man DFA’d.

    Good luck to you, sir.

  • TC1

Farewell Garret Jones, we hardly knew ye.

  • Angel Serrano

Everyone is having a titty attack. Has anyone noticed that these trades are only temporary. Some of these players may not stay with the teams that their in. All will become free agents once the season is over. The Yankees still have a chance to sign some pitchers to 3 years at a great price, instead of a long contract and getting burned at the end. With all the problems the Yankees been having with injuries, and what not we should be happy where we are at right now. Let the rookie pitchers throw so our regular pitchers can rest a little. As much as the Yankees don’t want to place a regular pitcher like CC Sabathia in the bullpen, explain to him that we need him there to make a great contribution, and at the same time he may rest, and get stronger.

  • JGNYC

Teixeira is healthy now and Jones rarely played mostly because of that. But it feels like every season before now we’ve been caught with our pants down because we’ve had no legitimate backup first baseman. Jones was mostly an insurance policy, and we haven’t needed it this season. But once again, we have no legitimate backup first baseman, and that worries me.

    • calripyankee

      G Bird..

  • Austinmac

Nothing statistically says this is an upgrade. Yeah versatility for a guy who doesn’t hit at any position. I was no Jones fan, but he could occasionally run into one.

Cueto vs. the Jays tonight. That will be interesting.

  • Angel Serrano

About Jarret Jones. He was a good player, but didn’t have the intensity, and at the same time we needed to make room. We need to place on the field players with heart, and intensity, like Paul Oniel. We have some now like Ellsbury, Gardy, Tex, even A-Rod, but we must catch fire. Run out fast to first base all the time, because when you go full speed the infielders rush and make mistakes. A hit is a hit. More contact when batting, think more hits, not home runs, that will come automatically. Bat for average consistently. Jesus, what happen to that pride of having a great batting average.

  • joeman

Ackley trade did nothing for this team

    • https://youtu.be/alYXF7a9N3U Memory Bread

For the 40 man roster going forward it did.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Absolutely. The problem is that we have people running their mouths here not knowledgable enough to get that.

    • Ma-kun Fronaka

Cleared 40-man space in the deal, and is a slight update over Jones due to age & position flexibility. Not meant to set the world on fire. Ackley sucks, and I’d still prefer Flores and J-Ram in a perfect world where roster space wasn’t something to consider, but it makes sense.

      • John

Flexibility??? The Yanks need power off the bench. So your bench is made up of CY, Murphy, Ryan, Ackley. That’s just great. One of Ryan/drew had ro be DFAed.

        • Ma-kun Fronaka

I don’t really get your argument. Want power off the bench? Meet Chris Young, 12 HRs is pretty nice for a 4th OF’er. Ackley and Jones have similar power, and literally fill the same role, except like I said, he plays more than 1B or RF, and he’s younger. Jones and Ackley on the same team is redundant, so this only makes sense.

          • BearNJ

I agree. Jones has struggled without regular ABs for the first time in his career. Cash expected more down time with Tex, A-Rod and Beltran to get Jones plate appearances.

  • Hank

I think I’m in the minority here, but I believe this is an upgrade (albeit a very minor one)

2015 wRC+: Ackley: 77, Jones:67 (Which makes them both terrible this year, but surprisingly Jones has been worse)

It’s an upgrade because Ackey is at least an averagish corner OF (he has a career +3 UZR/150 in left), can play 2nd and I do think Ackley has more actual upside with the bat. He can also fake CF – though that is not a need on the current roster.

The only issue is even though Cashman referred to him as potentially playing 5 positions (I assume all 3 OF, 2nd and 1st?), he has never really played RF (2 innings!) and has very limited time at 1st base (79 career innings) And that is kind of the main positions Jones was covering as a backup. I assume he can pickup RF seeing as he can play LF.

But I still see this as a hedge for 2016 for 2nd base – If Ackley hits well the next 2 months I think he goes into ST as the “his job to lose” 2nd base competition , with all due respect to future HOF’r Rob Refsnyder. And if they sign a 2nd baseman (or Ref wins the job), he basically becomes the utility guy again.

Not going to do much for them this year, but I’m not sure why people seem down on this.tradeoff

    • John

At least Jones could run into 1

      • Hank

        2015
        Jones: 5HRs (152 PAs)
        Ackley 6HRs (207 PAs)

        2014:
        Jones 15 HR’s (547 PA’s)
        Ackley 14 HRs (542 PA’s)

Jones has more raw power, but its not like he’s hitting substantially more HR’s

        • Bruce

I think we all just kind of liked the guy (Jones). Dude seemed like a solid teammate and I guess I just rooted for him to get a chance to play/win a W/S here. Getting cut sucks!

  • just_add_bacon7

I took a look at the schedule, in the next two series vs. Tor, CC is not scheduled to pitch.

I have no idea on salaries in the NFL, but Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Luck, are all definitely better.

      • levendis

Wilson is barely a top 10 QB. That system hides alot of his flaws. He fits in that system perfectly though. He’s sort of the Kawahi Leonard of the NFL.

Jones was doomed in many respects to Beltran’s contract. The Yankees were going to give Beltran as much leeway as possible to produce. So Jones missed out on playing time in RF as Beltran played through some of his issues. Ackley maybe a diamond in the rough if he could play some second base and rejuvenate his swing to the promise of his draft number. We can only hope that some player in the MLB can replace Mr. Drew.
Now the Yankees should give the young guys some starts such as Severino and Mitchell. So the AAA shuttle will show their cards and maybe we will be pleasantly surprised.

    • dave_8

Doomed by A-Rod’s good health and success at DH against all pitching.

Exactly. A-Rod’s production and also Teix’s health ate into a lot of the playing time Jones may have received.

Who did Brian Cashman consider truly untouchable in trade talks? “Severino, Judge, Bird, and obviously in most cases, Mateo,” Cashman said.

Cashman confirming Preller is a nutjob. Feel like we dodged a bullet with that crazy offer.

    • Mustang

      You know how I feel…LOL
But I’m happy for you that it didn’t happen but now Mateo is your boy!
That means I will keep an eye on him to see if your faith comes true.
      LOL

Thanks for the heated, but respectful discussion before.

      • n0exit

Well, it’s not just that I didn’t want Mateo traded for a reliever, but to also offer to take on all of Kimbrel’s contract AND most of Gyroko’s contract as well is insane. Come on, you can agree with that. We laugh at the dodgers for pulling that Alex Wood trade, but at least they got Alex Wood.

Anyway, we’ll see wha happens. I’m happy to say Mateo is my boy.

        • Mustang

I don’t think its as crazy as you think it is for a 27 year old 4 time All-Star closer with 3 years of control that would of made a strong bullpen amazing and would of help the starters by basically making games 6 innings.
I think Cashman agrees with me, but many here agreed with you.
Whatever it is what it is and hopefully Mateo will live up to expectations because if he doesn’t and Kimbrel keeps being Kimbrel YOU WILL KNOW IT!
          LOL

        • WT2

Yup asking for Mateo and to paying the rest of the contract was as stupid as it can be. Hell, asking for Mateo for a reliever was stupid by itself.

I would had been really frustrated and call Cash’s brain into question if he would have given Mateo for a reliever.

The kid has really star potential in him. Not going to give him up for a reliever.

    • Mustang

I totally agree with the Preller is nut job part.

  • Rick

As Big Dan always says, by listening you will learn a lot. Michael Kay just absolutely nailed what’s going on in Yankees Land. There are going to be deadlines like this, similar to last year. The Yankees are doing the unenviable task of trying to compete while rebuilding their system. As a result, it’s gonna be salary dumps and free agency to build the big league club until the farm is ready to produce sustainable talent. At that point, hopefully only one more year, the Yankees can rely on their own guys and start being a team that gets to sign talented players to team friendly extensions.

Michael Kay reading my RAB comments and repeating them: should sue for copyright infringement.

        Rub ketchup on them. Deterrent.

      • Rick

You’re 100% right. You can’t claim ownership though until you remind us every day that you said it first.

        • n0exit

Wrong, I have to tweet it multiple times then get others to tweet that I had it first.

    • Wkamm

      I’m okay with it.

Nothing new there really. So the hope is that Bird can replace Tex, Judge replaces Beltran, Severino replaces CC, Ref replaces Drew in the next couple of years. By then Gardner, Headley, McCann and Ellsbury will be further into their declining years and considered bad contracts, and they will need a replacement for Arod at DF. Nova, Eovaldi and Pineda will be free agents. Tanaka might opt out and if he doesnt replaces CC as the rotations bad contract

JD Martinez homers. Buck Farmer now has himself a 4 – 0 lead over BAL with which to work.

  • Rick

So Matt Harvey is the first pitcher since Andy Messersmith to have 2+ RBI’s in 3 straight games. Without googling, some trivia, can anyone tell me why Messersmith is important to baseball history?

    • ScottinSJ

      First $1 million+ annual salary?

      • Rick

If this is true, I would be learning something. I will have to look that up.

      • Some Asshole

I think I found Nolan Ryan had the first yearly salary, though I seem to remember Messersmith having a contract worth at least that much.

    • cashmoney

      Free agency?

      • Rick

Well done, sir. Curt Flood is the big name, but Messersmith was the case that enabled free agency.

    • Adam

      He sued MLB, right?
For FA rights or something like that.

  • Mustang

Totally loved how Cashman handled the card he got given at the trading deadline.

  • ScottinSJ

BAL has designated Bud Norris for assignment, just four months late. (Norris shoves Sabathia’s stats in my face).

  • Super Sub-Par ACK!ley

Hope mateo goes 4-4 tonight and steals 5 bases.. SUCK IT PADRES

  • cole3244

jones got a raw deal from yanks and never had a chance to succeed too bad we need guys like him.

    • Douglas Rau

Maybe but at the time he was acquired, NOBODY thought A-Rod would hit this well. He’s the one who took at-bats away from Jones.

      • cole3244

he should have been given more starts in right imo.

        • Douglas Rau

Chris Young got all the starts against the lefties and Beltran’s big money (and more consistent bat after the month of April) meant he was going to be in there against righties.

          • cole3244

            excuses excuses.

Gotta make room for… Ackley?? We’re screwed.

  • Asher Dratel

I think it’s kind of bullshit that they replaced Jones over Drew with this, but that’s business I guess.

  • Nick_CT

now that Ackley is going on DL i bet Jones comes back if he clears waivers. Also I cant believe it took me until now to find out Jones comes up to Inis Mona from Eluveite, thats just so fucking awesome
