Top stories from last week:
- The regular season started yesterday and Masahiro Tanaka turned in a rare disaster start. He failed to make it out of the third inning and the Yankees lost 7-3.
- Late last week the Yankees finalized their Opening Day roster. Aaron Judge is the right fielder, Luis Severino is the fourth starter, and Pete Kozma is the utility infielder. The Yankees will use off-days to skip their fifth starter for the time being, though both Chad Green and Jordan Montgomery are being lined up for the job.
- Jon Niese has re-signed with the Yankees on a new minor league contact. He’ll go to Extended Spring Training to build arm strength. Rule 5 Draft picks Tyler Webb (Pirates) and Caleb Smith (Cubs) were returned. Luis Torrens made the Padres, however. Mark Montgomery has been released. Johnny Barbato is preparing to work as a starter.
- And finally, Gleyber Torres will be featured in this year’s Prospect Watch. He won the James P. Dawson Award as the best rookie in camp.
