Despite standings, Red Sox still an expensive draw

Only three more home games separate the Yankees from the end of their regular season slate in the Bronx, and because baseball’s scheduling gods tried to create some dramatic tension late in the year, the Red Sox are in town. Unfortunately for Boston though, they’re on the brink of a postseason spent watching the playoffs on the couch as the Yanks enter Friday’s game with a Magic Number of three.

Still, Yankees/Red Sox tickets, as our partners as TiqIQ report, are in high demand. The chart at the bottom of this post shows that, on average, tickets on the secondary market for this weekend’s set are selling above the Yanks’ season average of $90 per ticket. Saturday’s mid-afternoon Jon Lester/Ivan Nova match-up is pacing the field while tonight’s Andy Pettitte/Josh Beckett showdown is significantly lower and the Sunday night Phil Hughes/Daisuke Matsuzaka game, which threatens to feature way too many pitches thrown, is the cheapeast.

In fact, as the chart at top highlights, tickets for Sunday’s game are the best deal for any Yankees/Red Sox game in the Bronx this season. That’s what happens, after all, when the Red Sox could be mathematically eliminated by then, and the Yanks could toss out a lineup resembling that of Scranton’s. So far, Red Sox tickets outpacing Rays’ series

As the final homestand of the regular season gets started this evening, ticket prices are on the rise. After a few homestands featuring mediocre opponents, the Yanks end their Yankee Stadium slate against Tampa Bay and the Rays, and RAB Tickets still has some great deals.

As the above chart from our partner TiqIQ shows, seats for the Rays’ games are currently going for less than those against the Red Sox. Only Thursday’s CC Sabathia/David Price rematch is going for above the season average. Meanwhile, even though the Red Sox face an elimination number of seven, the seats for this weekend are still going for a pretty penny. I’d expect the weekend prices to come down by a few bucks before all is said and done, but the Battle for First Place and potential ALCS preview should outpace yet another Yanks/Red Sox series.

Yanks winning the Jay-Z/Eminem ticket prices battle

When the Yankees hit the road next week, Yankee Stadium won’t remain empty. Instead, on Monday, September 13 and Tuesday, September 14, Jay-Z and Eminem will bring their concert to the stadium. Hip hop fans are eagerly anticipating these shows, and many Yankee fans will get to see Jay-Z perform “Empire State of Mind” in the Bronx again. Who doesn’t love the de facto 2009 playoffs anthem?

So far, the reviews out of Detroit have been strong. B.o.B. is opening up for the co-headliners, and last night, Dr. Dre, Drake, 50 Cent, and Young Jeezy made guest appearances. Of course, RAB Tickets and TiqIQ have some seats for those still looking to grab a spot at the show.

As the graph above shows, the ticket prices in New York, a city not facing a foreclosure crisis and economic death, are far outpacing those in Detroit, and the secondary market is insane right now as well. For the Sept. 13 show, tickets in the 400 section behind home plate are averaging $267 while tickets in the 300s sections for the Sept. 14 show are going for an average of $245. Tuesday, it seems, is the best bet.

Meanwhile, baseball remains on everyone’s minds this weekend, and the Blue Jays, while a popular draw, aren’t burning down the house. Tickets for this series are going for below the season average of $95, but the Saturday and Sunday games, when sunny weather and cooler temperatures sweep through the area in the wake of Hurricane Earl, aren’t exactly cheap. As always, RAB Tickets has all the best seats for this weekend’s games.

A’s series tickets going for cheap

As the Yanks return home after a six-game road trip, they’ll face off against the Oakland A’s in a four-game set at Yankee Stadium. Time was that the A’s in late August and early September would serve as a playoff preview, but the days of Jason and Jeremy Giambi, of Miguel Tejada, of Eric Chavez and the Big Three are long gone. Today, the A’s are a young team with some solid pitchers playing .500 ball.

And so with many New Yorkers still on vacation and the big September series still a few weeks away, tickets are selling well below average on the secondary market this week. For those interested in making it to the Bronx this year, now is a great chance to go. The tickets against the Blue Jays this weekend will go up, but the Orioles won’t command a premium. After the Yanks leave town on the 8th of September, they return home only for seven games against the Rays and Red Sox, and tickets to those contests are sure to cost a fortune.

Secondary market again under average for weekend set

The Seattle Mariners, as Cliff Corcoran detailed in his extensively entertaining series preview at the new Pinstriped Bible, aren’t a very good team. The team is 48-73 and have somehow managed to average 3.28 runs scored per game. It is no surprise then that tickets for the weekend are selling at 20 percent below average.

Surprisingly, tonight’s game — the one top-notch pitching match-up that features Felix Hernandez and A.J. Burnett — is the one with the lowest prices. Tomorrow’s game, an afternoon affair on a nice day, is selling strong, but with bad weather moving in on Sunday, the prices dip a bit. With so many New Yorkers out on vacation this week and next and an uninspiring Mariners club in town for some mid-August games, it’s no wonder ticket prices are a bit depressed. Tigers series drawing little secondary interest

As Johnny Damon and the Detroit Tigers stumble into town for a mid-week four-game set, the Motown Nine’s post-season dreams have all but faded. They team is in third place at 57-60, and they find themselves 10.5 games behind the AL Central-leading Twins. As such, as our partners at TiqIQ report, the secondary market for this week’s set is less than robust. On average tickets are selling at 35 percent below season levels, and only Thursday’s afternoon affair sees the average price approach $100. TiqIQ has a bit on the Johnny Damon factor as well.

With Boston in town, resale ticket prices jump

Whenever the Red Sox come to Yankee Stadium in August, something special seems to happen. Last year, the two teams played an epic 15-inning affair that ended with an Alex Rodriguez blast off of Junichi Tazawa en route to a sweep. What will it be this weekend?

This year, the games have lost some of their immediacy. Boston comes to town in third place either six or seven games behind the Yankees, and the Red Sox are only hanging around the fringes of the pennant race. If they can’t take 3 of 4 from the Yankees this weekend, they’ll have a very tough climb to get back into the October picture. Still, the tickets are going like hotcakes.
