Open Thread: Oh, noes!!1! Sabathia meets with the Red Sox

Checking in on A-Rod's undies
Jaffe plays GM for a day

It’s Friday before the Winter Meetings. That means it’s time for the Red Sox to scare the crap out of Yankee fans everywhere. Via the tireless Buster Olney:

The Red Sox are meeting with CC Sabathia sometime in the next few days, and so will Yankees GM Brian Cashman, who reportedly met with Scott Boras, the agent for Mark Teixeira and Derek Lowe. It’s unclear whether the Red Sox are seriously interested in trying to compete with the Yankees’ $140 million offer to Sabathia, or if they are just doing their due diligence and preparing alternatives in their winter shopping.

The Red Sox are doing what any team in their position would do. They’re being a pain in the neck for the Yankees, Angels and any other team interested in Sabathia. Are they going to sign him? No. Do they want to make their opponents pay more? Of course. Welcome to business.

Anyway, that’s that. Use this thread as your Friday night open thread. Discuss anything. Play nice. Just don’t accidentally shoot yourselves in the hip.

When I loaded the page and saw the words “Sabathia” and “Red Sox”, my heart stopped for a second.

  • Goosemania

Congrats Red Sox youve become what you were against ever being… the Yankees, welcome to the club

  • Spaceman.Spiff

Nah, we’re the Evil Empire remember? I love how the Red Sox vilified the Yankees and everyone jumped on their side like they weren’t a weaker version of the Yankees (at the time).

    • kenthadley

typical creep strategy…..give them the name, then play the game….

  • kenthadley

this is to keep the Yanks away from Tex…..get us all lathered up over losing CC that we miss the mark……no way Sox go 140 for CC…..and if I’m CC, why do I want to pitch in Fenway, in Boston, when I can make the same or more in NY?? let’s get real……no one believes that Boston is the best place to go to win a WS, especially if they are married to the west coast……this is all froth……IMO

    • Sweetness

Why wouldn’t some one believe Boston is not a place to win a WS? They’ve won 2 out of the last 5?

    • andrew

yea agreed… if somebody wanted to go someplace right now to win the world series, id say the sox are a pretty good bet… obviously i love the yankees.. but “let’s get real”… the sox are very good and are more of a sure thing at this moment

  • J.R.

so this hot stove has quite catch 22. Theres an article saying CC is waiting to see the Texiera contract b.c if the angels dont sign Tex, then they would go after CC.

And it seems like Texiera is doing the same thing. If the yankees miss out on CC they will go to lower tier FA pitchers and beef up their offense.

It will be interesting to see what agent accpets a deal first.

  • MLB2009

The Red Sox haven’t become the Yankees.

The Yankees are failing at being like the Red Sox.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Remember, folks: Don’t feed the trolls.

      • MLB2009

Even when the trolls are your own fans?

    • kenthadley

yeah, especially from 1918 to 2003……..

    • andrew neves

who’s been winnning the championships lately the yankees or the red sox. so we’re better than your stupid yankees

      • andrew

OMGGGGG he called us stupiddddd!! well atleast our short stop is better looking that your short stop! so ha!!

  • MLB2009

” let’s get real……no one believes that Boston is the best place to go to win a WS”

Is this guy honestly suggesting Boston isn’t among the best places to have a shot at winning a WS ??

I hope this guy is just kidding.

You may hate the Red Sox, but they are pretty good at assembling a Title team

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

You see how the comments say “Reply to this comment”? Use that link.

      • MLB2009

Okay, I’ll use that link to reply to idiotic posters from now on.

        Feel better?

anyway, Kenthadley….. you haven’t watched much baseball since 2003. I guess you’ve been lost since 1918-2003 (the golden years you cited) .

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Be nice. Play by the rules. Or don’t play. Those are the rules. If you start calling other posters “idiotic” and using other names, you won’t be commenting. You can root for the Red Sox; you can disagree with people’s (incorrect) statements. But if you can’t do it in a way that’s respectful, you’re gone.

I’m only saying this because you’re new. Just everyone needs to keep it civil.

        • kenthadley

I am an African-American lefthanded pitcher, and I have a choice between Boston and New York, between Fenway and Yankee Stadium, and the money is similar, where do I go? Hmmmmmm…….

and Buckaroo, I go back to before Pumpsie Green……..ask Jim Rice how warm it is in Boston……..

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

You, too, Kent. Play nice. That’s the one major rule of the Open Threads. Don’t get too nasty while the three of us are gone for Friday.

            • kenthadley

sorry Mr. K, we wont do it again….can we please have our ball back?

          • mustang

I wouldn’t of been that harsh, but kenthadley does have a point.
But kenthadley stay above them that’s where we Yankees fans belong.

            • Whitey14

That’s right dammit! Good Yankees fans belong up here with the good Red Sox fans ;-)

Seriously though MLB2009 and andrew neves, don’t come in here and act like asses. You’ll find that the majority of commenters here won’t care that you’re a Red Sox fan as long as you have some class. Bring facts to back up your points, don’t take or make things personal and just be nice. This blog isn’t like some of the more typical ones where fighting and cursing are the norm. They taught me that when I arrived over a year ago and I’m just trying to share it with you. Take it however you please.

              • mustang

What’s up Whitey14 the only Red Sox fan that I almost like.
                Just kidding.
                Drop the knowledge baby.
                Happy Holidays.

                • Whitey14

Hey Mustang! Nice to hear from you. Happy Holidays to you and yours my friend.

That goes for all of you guys as well. I hope you enjoy the Holidays and get ALMOST everything you want ;-) I still hope Teixiera ends up under our tree, but you’re welcome to the 300 lb fat lefty, the injury prone former Marlin (we already have one) and the former Red Sox postseason crotchgrabber. I’m not saying I wouldn’t take those guys, but not at the years and dollars they’re asking for right now.

I look forward to chatting a bit during the meetings next week. Hopefully there’ll be some action to chat about.

                • Jay CT

Just curiou- Why would Red Sox fans want to spend their time reading through Yankee blogs? I personally don’t care, I was just curous what they might look to get out of it. I guess thats just the therapist in me…

              • MLB2009

The fact that you’re a Red Sox fan (and don’t take issue with what kenthadley just said is alittle hard to undertstand), but to each his own. I guess Pumpsie Green still plays for Boston..

            • MLB2009

but what point does he have?

He’s using Pumpsie Green as an example of racial relations in 2008’s Boston.

Let me simply ask, do you live in Boston?

          • MLB2009

Wow… You make a comment like that in the year 2008?

I think there are a lot of good posters here.

but after reading your comments about the old Boston and racial relations, I cannot believe any Red Sox fan like Whitey14 doesn’t have more of an issue with you than me.

Let’s just stay in the year 2008, not go back to Pumpsie Green’s days.

I would never rehash the NYPD’s brutality incidents against minorities or the Crown Heighs, Brooklyn riots.

  • Jeff

Sabathia doesn’t want to pitch for the Yankees, plan and simple. he’ll wait to see if the Angels sign Tex and if not that’s where he wants to be. Cashman should pull the offer move on. Pick up Sheets, Perez, Pettitte, and Tex and improve the defense instead of wasting time on a guy who doesn’t want to be there. Remember RJ? He wanted yankee dollars but never to pitch and NY and he was miserable and showed it on the field. Just move on from sabathia and don’t put the team through a guy who doesn’t wanna be there.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

I take it you missed Tyler Kepner’s voice of reason. That’s all.

    • Jack

Pick up Sheets, Perez, Pettitte . . .

      Dear Mo in Heaven, why?

    • Mike W.

I would respond to your comments and agree with you, but then Ben would just remind me that last night he called me to stupid to understand the word patience.

  • VO

We need CC, just as much as we need teixiera, we cant sign both, and frankly NY is not either one of their first choices, lets just hope we can sign one.

    • Chuck

whats texeira’s first choice? I dont think it is Anaheim

      • Ivan

His first choice is “who will pay me the most money”

    • J.R.

Im really not sure where this idea that we can’t sign both came from. We deffinently can. The question is more a matter of whether or not we should.

I think the Yankees are trying to keep the price of both from spiraling out of control using two very different methods.

CC method: come out throw down the biggest offer ever and know no one will top it.

Tex method: Pretend you are not interested. As soon as it looks like Tex is about to sign, make a slightly larger offer. And for the argument that they wont know when he is about to sign, I wouldnt doubt that Boras would give them the chance to top the highest offer.

      • mustang

BINGO we have a winner !!!!!

“And for the argument that they wont know when he is about to sign, I wouldnt doubt that Boras would give them the chance to top the highest offer.”

Like he did with BELTRAN , but this time the Yankees are not going to pass.

        • mustang

At the end of all this I’m betting that the Yankees end up with:
          CC
          Tex
          Sheets
          Andy
And they trade IPK and prospects ( relievers) to KC for DeJesus.

And Santa I have been really good this year.

          • AMS223

So then you have Tex at first DeJesus in Center, Nady if RF, Damon in LF…..where is swisher???

we all like to dream but this just doesnt make much sense unless we flip swisher for an arm

            • Ed

Which would be pretty pointless, considering all it took to get him was Marquez. No one’s going to offer us more than we paid for him, and Marquez was pretty far down the list of guys we care about.

          • http://jobatheheat jobatheheat

That woulld make it a wonderful christmas.

  • Ivan

Wow seeing OJ like that was just absolutely pathetic and just hard to take.

Talk about a fall from grace.

    • J.R.

Talk about the karma train making a stop.

      • Ivan

        Oh well.

By the way, can the judge spare me the “this wasn’t payback” crap. It was quite obvious it was.

        • Steve

Of course it was. Its not like he has a long rap sheet or something. The one other time he was ever accused of something he was acquitted, so in the eyes of the law that shouldn’t count.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not crying any tears for that murderer. But the sentence should fit the crime, and this one didn’t in my view.

          • Ivan

            tru dat.

        • J.R.

The other guy who helped OJ got the same sentence also.

    • Steve

Gotta admit, the jail sentence he got for what he did seemed excessive to me. You have to believe the Judge was attempting to make up for past transgressions by OJ, and if that’s the case this will likely get reduced on appeal. 30+ years for holding somebody up? Minimum of 9 years before parole? You’d think he killed somebody.

But then again, I think the NYC gun law is draconian and arbitrary. In most other states Plax wouldn’t serve a day in prison, and he’s looking at 3.5 years here. 6 months would get the point across, don’t you think?

      • Ivan

        “You’d think he killed somebody.”

Well…..he did lol. Why you think he got a minimum of 9 years.

It was clearly for payback. I mean 9 years for a crime like that should at best be the maximum not the minimum.

        • Count Zero

There’s a point here which you guys are missing…

It’s Las Vegas. They are prepared to ignore all kinds of criminal activity in Vegas. Except one — they get really hot under the collar when someone pulls a gun on someone in a casino or the attached hotel…especially if it makes national news. Very, very bad for business. Do it in some back alley and no one even notices, but in a hotel with a casino? Crucifixion is de rigeur.

The one thing you don’t do in Vegas is mess around in a casino. Juice made a big mistake there. People like to know that when they walk away from a table with $30K, no one is going to come into their room with a gun. Shatter that illusion — be prepared for a reaming from a local judge who knows where the bread is buttered. If the judge doesn’t do it, someone else will.

          • Ivan

            Vegas is like that dude?

            • Jay CT

Absolutely. Vegas tolerates almost anything (see: Bunny Ranch) but do not mess with their casinos.

And I think its sad that someone kidnaps someone and pulls a gun theating to kill the person, and you don’t even feel that it warrants 9 years. What exactly does warrant 9 years? Rape? Murder? I think the country would be a better place if they stopped letting people off with a free pass for first offense, then a slap on the wrist, etc…

Do you have a problem with Rae Carruth? He didn’t actually do the crime, so does he not deserve a life sentence?

          • Steve

            Hmmm. That’s interesting.

The penalty seems excessive, but the judge has to be following a law of some sort.

          • Old Ranger

You hit it, they are very protective of their cash cows and publicity. The judge gave him the minimum years for robbery with a gun…9. She could have given him, up to and including life for that, and the kidnapping.
What were they to do, let him off because he is OJ? No way, the evidence was air tight…do the crime and do the time!
Besides, if LV had let him go, the feds could have stepped in…kidnapping is also a fed crime…and NO, one doesn’t have to cross state lines. 27/09.

    • mustang

That’s what happens when your to stupid to realize that you got away with something big time.

      Don’t drop the soap. !!!!!

  • dkidd

    question:

cano/hughes/brackman for peavy and adrian gonzalez

    do you make that deal?

    • Ivan

      no.

Next you know it 6 years later, Hughes and Brackman are battling for a CY Young award on the same team and Cano just won a batting title.

    • VO

Tough one, I would say no deal.

      • dkidd

it is tough. i wouldn’t do it either, but i wonder if i get emotionally attached to yankee prospects and over-value them. ag in yankee stadium would be insane. hughes might win a cy young someday bur peavy’s already won one

        • VO

I agree with your point not only you a lot of yankees fans including myself get attached to the prospects because they hear such great things about them, and want them to succeed, but in reality it will take time for Hughes to become his Cy Young self in the big leagues.

        • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

Peavy + bad division + pitcher’s park = just ONE Cy Young? haha!

Naw, but Peavy is not going to put up sub-3.00 ERAs in the AL East, and his stamina (on the mound that is) has been called into question. Gonzalez would be a bigger pickup in this deal IMO, but there’s no way SD trades him. He is still very cheap.

    • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

Padres would never do that, and as the Yankees, it isn’t exactly a coup. Peavy’s contract is not as great its hyped up to be, and Adrian is still cheap. It’s not realistic.

      • dkidd

san diego is in full on owner-ordered fire sale mode. who knows what’s realistic?

        • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

          09:$3M, 10:$4.75M,
          11:$5.5M club option (no buyout)

          *Cited from Cot’s Contracts

I doubt he’s totally off-limits but you’re not going to get him and Peavy for Hughes, Brackman and Cano. The Padres don’t need Cano’s salary if they are trying to dump it, not to mention the fact that we would have to send Jackson and more just to get Kevin Towers to stay on the line.

          • Steve

At those prices for his production, he would fetch a ton in return.

I would deal him now if I was Towers, and maybe even in a mega package with Peavy. The fact that he’s signed cheap means he’ll be very attractive. The Peavy market seems dry, but packaged with A-Gon Towers could ask a few teams to back up the truck, and the Yanks would be one of them.

Don’t forget, the Padres have Kyle Blanks destroying AA last year, so he’s just about ready to take over at 1B. Its not as crazy as some would make you think, and it could set up the Padres for years to come.

    • Eric

      Like I did below:

I’m gonna say this in every language I know.

      English:No.
      Italian: No.
      Spanish: No.
      German: Nein.
      French: Non.

    • mustang

      NOOOO !!!!

    • Zack

You all saying no obviously: 1) Don’t live in San Diego as I do, and therefore don’t get to see both AG and Peavy play a lot, and 2) have no concept of what is a good deal.

Hughes Cano and Brackman? hell yes you make that trade. AG put up those #s playing half his games at Petco with ZERO protection or help. And I mean ZERO. Peavy has actually put up pretty impressive road #s, especially in ’07 and ’05. The guy is a flat out ace, and its very very very hard to argue otherwise. Oh yeah, and his contract? its quite reasonable, despite what some may say.

And what do you give up? Hughes and Brackman are prospects. A straight swap of Hughes and Brackman for Peavy would probably be a steal for the Yanks, or at least a wash. Yes, Hughes will pitch great in Petco, but so would Igawa…

And Cano for AG, well that’s tougher, but as a total package, its a pretty damn fine deal for the Yanks.

      But it won’t happen…

      • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

But why would you trade the farm for a pitcher and a first baseman when you can sign CC and Tex, and get arguably better production?

        • Eric

          Yeah that, too.

        • mustang

          agree.

        • andrew

because we wont sign cc and tex

      • Eric

It’s not just about that. It’s about money.

Not to mention the fact that trading for/signing big-ticket players hasn’t exactly worked out for the Yankees this decade.

If the deal could somehow get done without Hughes or Austin Jackson then yeah. But including possibly the best pitching prospect to come out of the farm system this side of Mariano Rivera…not so much.

        • Old Ranger

          Moose?
          A-Rod?

      • Ron

“Hughes will pitch great in Petco, but so would Igawa”

Okay, if we get to substitute Igawa for Hughes, I’m down.

  • VO

I made a comment like this yesterday, if Cano is traded what do you guys think about Nick Punto? The guy can play a pretty god second base, he is only 29 and hit .284 last year.

    • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

He also slugged just .382, his career high. OBP-wise he isn’t terrible but other than some defense, I don’t see what purpose he serves on an AL team.

      • dkidd

are we talking about the same gonzalez? didn’t ag slug like .500? playing half his games in the grand canyon?

        • dkidd

          never mind. punto!

    • Eric

I’m gonna say this in every language I know.

      English:No.
      Italian: No.
      Spanish: No.
      German: Nein.
      French: Non.

      • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

Funny thing, my friend Eric speaks like 3-4 languages… and his last name is Hosmer… pretty weird huh?

    • VO

who would it be then? thats the issue

      • dkidd

san diego is a seriously motivated seller. like marlins in 1998 motivated. they have a legitimate ace and a 26 year old first baseman who hit 36 hrs playing in san diego and plays better d than tex. i don’t wanna give up hughes either, i’m just wondering what people think it would take?

        • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

Probably more than that, even. From Cot’s Contracts:

          Adrian Gonzalez 1b
          4 years/$9.5M (2007-10), plus 2011 club option

If anything they would look to move him in the summer or next offseason.

      • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

If Cano is traded this offseason, the Yanks would should go after one of Hudson, Grudzielanek or Felipe Lopez. Failing that, I think they would probably ask about guys like Freddy Sanchez, Emilio Bonifacio, Uggla, etc. Overall trading him seems like a bad idea. He came off of a career-worst year. He just signed an extension. He plays an up-the-middle position. Keep him at least one more year unless someone wants to give up a lot.

        • Eric

Yeah Cano won’t be traded. As it’s been said how many times around here…the Yankees have invested a shitload into Cano this year. Getting rid of a guy with his upside after one down year would be pretty dumb, unless it’s something like Cano for Billingsley or Kershaw straight up which will not happen. Or Cole “My Constant Man Crush” Hamels.

        • dkidd

my point is that divorce-related fire sales (combined with a planetary financial meltdown) don’t happen that often. there may be an opportunity to get a legitimate ace and our 1st basemen for the next 8 years. what would it take?

          • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

            If I were Kevin Towers:

            Hughes
            IPK
            Jackson
            Brackman
            Romine
            McAllister

You are not going to get TWO stars for three players. And as I said before, Cano doesn’t make sense for them, since they are trying to cut salary.

            • pat

No way u eviscerate your farm for peavy and a-gon

          • pat

We could easily buy a firstbaseman for the next 8 yrs without having to give up any talent. You dont trade young good up the middle players and a young potential ace for a 1b.

        • Manimal

Uggla didnt do so well in Yankee stadium…

        • Zack

Yeah, and those second base options make me want to throw up

        • VO

          wonderfully said

  • dkidd

    clearly i’m bored

  • Manimal

Did anyone see Moose on Rome is burning? He knew he was going to retire for about a year.

  • VO

Now before you read this, I DO NOT want this to happen. Why hasnt there been any Joba rumors, I understand he is pretty much untouchable but usaully we would here something wouldnt we?

    • pat

The short list of people I would trade joba for; Hanley, Grady timmy, felix, joe mauer and evan

      • pat

double.. my bad maybe ben can delete it

      • Ron

        Cole Hamels?

      • Mike Pop

I wouldnt trade Joba for Evan

The short list of people I would trade joba for; Hanley, Grady timmy, felix, joe mauer and evan (if we didnt have arod)

    • MyNameIsNed

Why in the name of Mariano Rivera would you even mention such blashemy? People get all defensive when you mention Hughes, then you throw out Joba. Go play intermurals brother.

“Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the latest on A.J. Burnett. The Braves will hold off on other moves for starting pitching until they hear from A.J. Burnett’s agent Darek Braunecker about their offer (said to be five years, $75MM if the fifth-year option vests).

Braunecker says he has numerous offers, though Burnett’s next team will have to be within driving distance of his suburban Baltimore home.”

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....-rumo.html

Because when you plan on spending half the season on the DL and not traveling with the team, you don’t want to have a long drive home.

    Chad Gaudin > Oilver Perez.

If Gaudin is really nontendered by the Cubs, Cashman should take a shot at him. He could catch a lighting in a bottle with him. Gaudin has the stuff to be a mid-rotation starter.

ASSUMING the Yankees don’t add any more players and they carry 4 benched positional players, they really don’t have a spot to give up. I guess you could send Coke to AAA, but honestly I’d rather have him in there. I think you’re overrating Gaudin here, he’s only pitched 100 innings once . And his numbers — even as a reliever — are not really that great.

    • Brooklyn Ed

before his first full season in the majors, he’s been up and down which he wasn’t really been given a chance. actually he pitched 199 innings.

this season, his role wasn’t really permanent hence the reason why he sucked this season.

    • Steve

That team will be lucky to won 81 games. God forbid a pitcher gets hurt, but lets face it, that’s a long shot. That never happens.

    Cano for Kemp?

“Olney says the Yankees would ask for Chad Billingsley or Clayton Kershaw from the Dodgers for Robinson Cano. After the Dodgers turn down that request, the Yanks will ask for Matt Kemp. If the Yankees do move Cano, they could then pursue Orlando Hudson.”

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....atest.html

Sorry, but I still think Cano’s upside is higher than Kemp and his glove will be better at his position. Kemp’s position is more valuable, but 2B is valuable as well. There have also been some rumblings about Kemp being a bit of a malcontent, and the clubhouse issues that they brought Torre in to fix were in part related to him.

They’ll have to do Kemp+. I don’t do that deal straight up.

    • pat

funny becasue the dodgers wouldnt do the deal unless it was kemp for cano+

    • http://incumbentgm.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

If Kemp was an above-average CF, maybe, but he’s really a LF.

    • Baseballnation

The more interesting question is not if they are equal value, but who has more overall value at his position. You’d be hard pressed to get someone to deal up a young stud infielder like Cano. There’s a premimum for guys like him. Just look at the free agent market this year of middle infielders. Cano just isn’t easy to replace, Kemp on the other hand is much easier to replace as far as the outfeld goes.

I starting to get a bad feeling about this postseason. I think the Yanks have nothing to fear from the Red Sox in the CC chase, but I do have a feeling he will go for a West Coast team. I don’t like the way Cashman is screwing with Andy, I suspect Andy, who is probably doing a slow burn, will jump ship to show the Yanks up. These two things happen watch the club overpay for Lowe (who doesn’t interest me in the least).

This postseason boils down to Manny and CC. The Yanks desperately need a hitter of Manny’s ability, get him, pencil him in as DH for 150 games and watch the Yankee batting order hum, this is the classic case of a rising tide lifting all boats. CC is another must, there is no subsitute. Cashman has to do everything in his power to make CC happen. Stay away from sure trap doors, Lowe is a classic example of that. I love Tex but forget him, figure Swisher for first base and try to work something out with Matsui so he can be moved to another team (maybe the Giants). I already think it’s too late but try to mend fences with Andy. I would rather have Andy than AJ or Sheets to be honest about it.

  • Bill

Just wondering hows Mannys arm? right field capable?, and also whats a good fielding percentage?

  • ortforshort

I saw Joltin Joe’s Yankee lineup up there. Can’t even beat out the Orioles with that mess. Meanwhile Yankee fans think theat the Red Sox are talking to Sabathia to try to mess with Cashman’s head. That ship has sailed a long time ago. The Red Sox need Sabathia if they want to overcome their real competition – Tampa Bay. The Yankees are way back in the rear view mirror. Unless you’ve all forgotten, the Yankees have lost their two most productive starters from last year and the thirty four wins they had plus their second best hitter and their second best power guy – and all they’ve added is a lifetime .240 hitter. Like I said, Boston isn’t talking to Sabathia because they’re worried about New York.

    • MLB2009

great post by ortforshort, very sound points about the many improvements the yankees need to make to get back to their winning ways of 96-2000

Is Cody Ransom a free agent now, or still on the team?

    • Old Ranger

      Still with the Yanks.

Just reading SWB (Chad) and saw his take on CF for 2009. Also his link to Baseball Am. in which they write; The best “D” Catcher…Francisco “Sisco” Cervelli but, there is a catch…he also posts the 2012 line-up Catcher–Romine. As stated by (who cares) Sisco is the only “In house option” for back-up, as of now. We have two or more “not prime time” catchers coming in a few years…they pan out, we have some “prime time” guys, Romine, Montero, and some lower down. 27/09.

  • Old Ranger

I have been thinking about Melky and his situation for a few days. The thing is; the kid is still only 23 years old, with his best years ahead. Just a thought but; could it have something to do with his after hours play time with A-Rod and followers? I know he comes to ST out of shape (or lets say, not in shape) and never seems to get fully in playing shape.
If (here we are, another if) he could reach his 2006 numbers, he could be our CF for the year. Now if he only reaches his 2007 numbers…platoon him with the other guy in CF. With the two of them around respectability (hitting), it would make us stronger up the middle and keep the pitchers happy.

  • http://www.soxaddict.org Michael Christopher

Heh don’t try to make it look like Boston is the big bad guy here. They’re doing what any team in their position would do. Not only that but I’m sure CC Sabathia is thrilled because now other teams will up the offer.

  • LeftyLarry

Don’t lose Burnett Cashman. He’s going to end up the real steal.Braves are smart about pitching, always have been.
Sabathia doesn’t want to be a Yankee.
    Burnett will go anywhere.

    • Steve H

      Mike Hampton anyone?

      • http://www.soxaddict.org Michael Christopher

I was thinking the same thing. Might as well throw some money at Ben Sheets (actually, why isn’t his name mentioned more often? because he ended the season hurt?)

    • Mike Pop

He’s going to end up the real steal

As much as I love AJ and his arm he is more likely to steal your money than be a steal himslef

      • Steve H

Coming from you that carries a ton of weight. We all know about your Burnett love, but it’s not clouding your judgment. It’s funny, I don’t want Burnett, but if we do sign him, I’ll be excited based on the tiny chance he puts it all together.

        • Mike Pop

Hey I got his autograph back when he was a Marlin at training camp.. He probably was injured at the time and thats the only reason I got his autograph

          • Steve H

Did he have to sign left hand?

        • whozat

He’s 31/32. He’s unlikely to “put it all together” or even stay healthy for a full season.

Every other year that he’s made 30+ starts, he’s missed significant time the next season. So, that doesn’t bode well for 2009, AND then there’s his injury track record in general — a litany of arm and shoulder problems.

He also walks lots of guys.

          Boo.

  • Mary

    Ty wigginton first base??

  • Dave

Why are the dodgers pushing for cano so badly when it is crystal clear, the yanks are committed to him, dont want to trade him and will aim for the sky if teams wants to talk trade. I read these comments in mlbtr about how kemp is soo much better. Maybe he is but maybe the perception of him is right now. Cano is coming off a big down year and kemp is coming off a big season with 35 steals and 18 homers. Of course, kemp looks better RIGHT NOW but in a year, who knows? Billingsley is the same deal – coming off a huge year so he looks far better than cano. I would never trade cano right now unless the offer bowls me over.

Are the sux serious? They actually think that this ridiculous conversation will get the yank’s panties in a bunch. it is beyond obvious the sox will not offer CC 150 mil to get him away from the yanks. Especially, with the constant expression of interest in Tex for the last month or so.

I have to say Derek Lowe MUST be dreaming – he wants 5 years and 90 million. That is beyond ridiculous. I wouldnt pay that to him if he was 30. He is pass his mid 30s already. He never made more than 10 mil in his prime. Why would he make almost 20 mil between the ages of 36 and 40. And he is coming out of the NL west trying to get back into the AL east. I heard he has changed since leaving boston but his last year in boston he had a 5.5 era. His 3.5 average the last couple of seasons could easily turn into 4.5 on the yanks or sux. hMM, Do we know any 200 innings pitchers who pitch to around 4.5 eras and play for the yankees? PETTITTE maybe – and the yanks didnt even want to risk giving him 1 year at 16 mil to try to get draft picks. Why is Lowe so much better that he deserves 5. Cash prolly offered Lowe 3 years in that meeting with Scotty B in his “expression of heavy interest.” To me, even 3 is pushing it to a 36 year old.

Giambi wants 3 years – YEA RIGHT! He was good last season but not good enough to forget the rest of his years on the yanks.

If bedard is in the rule 5, shoudnt teams be somewhat interested like the yanks. Even if he is coming back midseason – he could be a big boost if healthy.

It seems the yanks will have to give burnett five years and at least 15+ million to get him to the bronx. Thas alot for a pitcher who has made 10 trips to the dl dont ya think? I mean logically one would assume 10 dl trips in 10 seasons – what are the chances he stays healthy for 5 seasons in which he is already past the age of 30? I like Burnett – with a little more control, he could be the best number 3 starter in baseball. He proved he could hold his own in the AL east. But five years for a guy that only seems to stay healthy and pitch well in his walk years is far too much. Would Aj give the yanks a discount over the braves because he would be closer to baltimore where he lives? I also think AJ is worth more to the braves in the NL east than he is to the yanks in the AL east. He would be higher than their number 3 starter so more demand would be placed on him and he would have an era possibly a full run lower.I am still in the sheets camp – 2 years for 30 mil with a team option for another 15 mil should get it done – worst case scenario – he only pitches 100 innings per season (the lowest of his career.) I dont see him pulling a pavano – he seems far more willing to pitch through pain and minor injuries. Thas why he has never pitched less than 100 innings in a season even though he made 6 trips to the dl in his career.
