Report: Cash ducks Vegas for CC meeting
ByBrian Cashman is a busy, busy man. Earlier this evening, he ducked out on the beat writers to meet with A.J. Burnett. But now reports have him jetting off to catch a bigger fish. According to Kat O’Brien, Cashman has left Vegas to meet with Mr. and Mrs. Sabathia in San Francisco. It has to be a good sign if Cashman’s gearing up to pitch New York to Amber. Hopefully, Cashman will get lucky on the third date.
Update 11:30 p.m.: Dan Graziano has a very optimistic report about this meeting. I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch, but this seems like a rather promising development right now.

Option #2 wouldn’t have taken a face to face in which Cash had to leave the GM meetings to meet in SF. If CC called Cash and Cash flew to SF, I’m sure it wasn’t to be rejected.

I hate to play the speculation game about this stuff… But I can’t imagine CC and his wife would drag Cashman away from the Winter Meetings, all the way to SF, just to say “thanks but no thanks.” I’m definitely not saying Sabathia’s signing or anything, but this news doesn’t make any sense if the reason for the meeting is for the Sabathia’s to decline the Yankees’ offer.

They are discussing a life-altering move. I think it’s pretty understandable that this is both a career and a family decision.

Don’t hold your breath on the latter. The fates would have to align just right for Peavy to come to the Yanks, and it’s really been more of a pipe dream than a reality.
Where are all the Peavy rumors coming from? It almost sounds like the “Peavy Rumor Mill” hired A-Rod’s media spokesman to keep dropping hints about it or something. The thing doesn’t make sense, but it won’t go away.

What’s not cool is to see a targeted free agent spurn the Yanks even though the Yank offer is far & away superior to the field. We can’t have the latter happen b/c it diminshes the pinstripes.

If they have CC and Pettitte, I’d honestly rather have them direct any remaining budget towards a bat and a second-tier starter. At that point, you’re signing a 4/5 guy. You REALLY don’t need to blow your wad on Burnett.
If Sheets is there, go for it. But if CC and Pettitte are on board…honestly, spend DRASTICALLY less money on someone like Paul Byrd or Randy Wolfe, expecting Hughes/Kennedy/Aceves/Horne/Coke/etc to push him out of the rotation come July. Then bring in a CF stopgap, if possible, or a corner of/1b bat if not.
Or go whole-hog on Tex and fill the 5th slot internally.

First off, he left in the afternoon so the meeting is or has already taken place by now. Second, yet another meeting at CC’s request which is also a positive sign.
