Report: Cash ducks Vegas for CC meeting

By

Brian Cashman is a busy, busy man. Earlier this evening, he ducked out on the beat writers to meet with A.J. Burnett. But now reports have him jetting off to catch a bigger fish. According to Kat O’Brien, Cashman has left Vegas to meet with Mr. and Mrs. Sabathia in San Francisco. It has to be a good sign if Cashman’s gearing up to pitch New York to Amber. Hopefully, Cashman will get lucky on the third date.

Update 11:30 p.m.: Dan Graziano has a very optimistic report about this meeting. I’m not counting my chickens before they hatch, but this seems like a rather promising development right now.

  1. Greg P says:

Well, it’s hard not to see this development as a positive. 3 meetings in 3 days, and this one in SF? Could this happen sooner than we thought?

  2. MP says:

AHHH!! i’m pumped! GO GET ‘EM CASHMAN!

  3. Joey H says:

After 3 dates you got to get laid! Third time is a charm so they say.

    • RustyJohn says:

So does that mean that Cashman is going to hook up with Amber? That might not win over CC’s heart, unless he’s a big perv.

  4. Mike Popavero says:

    This is kind of awesome

  5. Manimal says:

Enough with the reports and meetings. Just get it done Cash.

  6. Lancer says:

    Facts:

    1) 3rd meeting in 3 days
    2) Meeting with not just CC now, also visiting with the wifey
    3) Leaving the action behind in Vegas just to meet with them

Add it all together and things are beginning to look a lot better. C’mon Ca$h you could do it.

  7. Mike NYY says:

    Probably wonb’t know until morning

  8. Matt says:

Hopefully this isn’t a “four date Reid” situation.

  9. Mike Popavero says:

This can be great or horrible
    1. He says he is interested and his wife is okay with it (you know what I mean) and he says just give me a little more time or he signs right there (cross my fingers)

    2. He says I cant play you anymore and we arent interested in your offer anymore

    • Mike Pop says:

Wow that wierd I typed in my full last name..

      Remember the Name !!

    • Steve H says:

Option #2 wouldn’t have taken a face to face in which Cash had to leave the GM meetings to meet in SF. If CC called Cash and Cash flew to SF, I’m sure it wasn’t to be rejected.

    • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

I hate to play the speculation game about this stuff… But I can’t imagine CC and his wife would drag Cashman away from the Winter Meetings, all the way to SF, just to say “thanks but no thanks.” I’m definitely not saying Sabathia’s signing or anything, but this news doesn’t make any sense if the reason for the meeting is for the Sabathia’s to decline the Yankees’ offer.

      • steve (different one) says:

        gotta agree.

this can only be good news.

doesn’t mean it’s a done deal, but think about buying a car. you only bring your wife to look at it after you’ve made up your mind….j/k.

      • Mike Pop says:

But to play buzz killington, CC could of requested Cashman meet face to face with Amber. I know it sounds unrealistic but anything can happen with these rumors. Would be messed up on Sabathia’s part to do that

        • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

I’m not following you here… Why would a request by CC that Cashman come to SF to meet CC’s wife be unrealistic or messed up?

        • Steve H says:

But that’s still not Cash flying in to be rejected. And it’s also not his wife saying No to New York. Maybe he’s convinced, and just needs help nudging her along. But seriously, shouldn’t the person with the $140 million arm be the one that makes the final decision?

          • Mike Pop says:

She has sex with him though.

            • Steve H says:

I think CC and his $140 mill in NYC would afford him an opportunity or two to have sex with some decent looking women. Hell, just tell him he can have Jeter’s sloppy seconds (don’t suspend me!) and I’m sure he’d be more than pleased.

          • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

They are discussing a life-altering move. I think it’s pretty understandable that this is both a career and a family decision.

            • Steve H says:

Oh I can see it being a family discussion. But in the end, it’s $140mil. If my future wife had a $140 mil offer on the table, I would follow her to all ends of the earth.

          • steve (different one) says:

i take it you’re not married.

            j/k…

          • Mike says:

Maybe its like in Dark Knight where he flies to Hong Kong just to reject him, and the guy says “a simple phone call would have sufficed”.

  10. 34hughes says:

hopefully cash finishes this off tonight or tomorrow so he can get back to vegas and stop this peavy to the cubs madness

    • Ben K. says:

Don’t hold your breath on the latter. The fates would have to align just right for Peavy to come to the Yanks, and it’s really been more of a pipe dream than a reality.

      • Lancer says:

Where are all the Peavy rumors coming from? It almost sounds like the “Peavy Rumor Mill” hired A-Rod’s media spokesman to keep dropping hints about it or something. The thing doesn’t make sense, but it won’t go away.

  11. 34hughes says:

you never know remember its the cubs they tend to screw this things up

  12. The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Word is that Sabathia and his wife are meeting with Brian Cashman in the San Francisco area sipping cocktails with Brian Sabean in the Haight while laughing about how the Sabathias ditched Brian Cashman while Mr. Cashman used the restroom after his plane arrived at San Francisco International Airport tonight. (I must stress that’s unconfirmed, but talk is spreading fast.)

    /Baggarly’d

  13. Mike NYY says:

Would Sabathia and his wife have Cash come all the way to California just to say no? I doubt it.

Unless the price for Peavy has dropped considerably then no thanks, I`ll settle for Lowe?

  14. 34hughes says:

no hughes montero or romine involved peavy deal must be made

  15. A.D. says:

Maybe Cash is going to San Fran to pull the offer off the table in front of CCs wife just to show they mean business!!!1!!

NO MORE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF

  16. Noone important says:

I think this meeting might be to just tell his wife about new york but i hope its more than tht

  17. dan says:

What if A-Rod were a free agent and had Cashman do this (fly to his home)? Would Cashman have to pitch NY to Madonna? That’d be awkward.

  18. Brooklyn Ed says:

Ben Sheets to sign with Texas?

Nolan Ryan says the Rangers examined Sheets’ medical records and determined he’s healthy. Sheets seems to have mutual interest, though the Rangers would need to move players to fit him in the payroll.

    http://www.dallasnews.com/shar.....37148.html

this can’t be good. Cashman has to get on it once he gets back to Vegas.

  19. Mike Pop says:

Look at that, Moreno says they are not in the CC picture at all. Gammons damn you !

  20. BigBlueAL says:

If Cashman gets CC to sign with the Yankees, the Knicks should hire Cash in 2010 to get Lebron. Man tonight’s Knicks loss was a tough one, but its nice that they are competitive enuff and close enuff to the 8th seed that Knick games matter at least. If only Nate was healthy….

Sorry back to the Yankees, go get’em Cash!!!!

  21. 34hughes says:

well moreno just said the angels are not going after cc

  22. Frank says:

    This could easily be:

CC – my wife and family aren’t into it. i can’t do it
Cash – can I have one last chance to talk to them face to face?
CC – sure, but I don’t think that will help. but with the money that is on the table, I owe you that much

If CC needs another man to convince his wife his should play in NY, we are screwed.

  23. Steve H says:

Could be, but I would think the odds of that are much smaller than this being a positive meeting.

  24. Chip says:

Awesome, I’d like to wake up tomorrow for work and see that he’s signed

  25. Lancer says:

Seems like things are really beginning to move forward.

Ca$h hops on a flight to San Fran, leaving the Vegas scene… now Moreno comes out and says that the Angels aren’t going after CC….

    • Noone important says:

well the flight to san fran from vegas is just under 1 and a half hours so figure 3 hours in flight back an forth, and a cuple hours there, plus traveling to mcdonalds to bribe him figure hell be back at 5 in the mornning with some good news

    • Mike Pop says:

      Moreno scared of Cashman ?

  26. Mike NYY says:

I doubt we`ll hear any more Yankees rumors tonight with Cash on a plane to California. I also doubt anything major will happen. I`ll probably go in the next few minutes.

    • Lancer says:

It’s not a long flight from Vegas to San Fran. If it’s a serious meeting now, things will happen lighting fast. The money is there, way above what any other team is prepared to pay. All we’re waiting for is the decision…

      • Reggie C. says:

Hopefully its a good one. Its one thing for us to disagree on which free agent the Yanks should target. That’s fine and healthy. What’s not cool is to see a targeted free agent spurn the Yanks even though the Yank offer is far & away superior to the field. We can’t have the latter happen b/c it diminshes the pinstripes.

    • Chip says:

They could accept it tonight. I mean if the first two meetings were to convince CC, maybe the only person that still has doubts is the wife. Cashman goes and gets her approval and it gets hammered out tonight

  27. dan says:

No clue if this means anything at all, but Sheets lives in Texas–a half hour from Arlington.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Sheets

  28. Noone important says:

My predictions, Lowe a redsock, Burnett a Yankee, Pettite a Yankee, and Sheets a ranger, as for CC, must i even type it?

    • Chip says:

I’d be surprised if we signed CC, Burnett and Pettite. I guess I don’t see us throwing that much money around if we already have CC. I’d think Sheets was more likely.

I’ll go Sheets, CC and Pettite are Yankees, Burnett is a Brave and Lowe a Red Sox

    • Mike NYY says:

      My Predictions:

      Texiera- Angels
      Lowe- NYY
      Burnett- Boston
      Sabathia- NYY
      Sheets- Texas
      Dunn- Nationals

    • Manimal(on iPod) says:

lowe a phillie, Burnett a brave, Cc a yank, sheets a yank, tex a angel, and manny a nat

    • whozat says:

If they have CC and Pettitte, I’d honestly rather have them direct any remaining budget towards a bat and a second-tier starter. At that point, you’re signing a 4/5 guy. You REALLY don’t need to blow your wad on Burnett.

If Sheets is there, go for it. But if CC and Pettitte are on board…honestly, spend DRASTICALLY less money on someone like Paul Byrd or Randy Wolfe, expecting Hughes/Kennedy/Aceves/Horne/Coke/etc to push him out of the rotation come July. Then bring in a CF stopgap, if possible, or a corner of/1b bat if not.

Or go whole-hog on Tex and fill the 5th slot internally.

  29. JeffG says:

Only one explanation Cash has pics of CC nailing a Vegas hooker. Big boy is trying to cut him off before he gets to the house. He’ll sign.

Anyways, seriously, I think this sounds like the deal is getting done. Knock on wood…

  30. Mike NYY says:

Oh, and Pettite to the Yanks

  31. Mike Pop says:

Apparently Melvin is flying out to CC’s home too.

Cashman: (walks in the front door)Wait… What the hell are you doing here Melvin !!!!? Is this some kind of joke CC??

Melvin: (spits up his alcohol) What, what the hell is he doing here CC ?!?!?!

CC: (drops 2 wooden sticks on the floor in front of them) Duel and whoever wins is the team I will sign with

  32. Ivan says:

Cash must of promise CC that in the contract, he will get a free supply of Popeye’s Chicken. CC just couldn’t resist.

  33. Lancer says:

Cashman flew to San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon to meet with Sabathia and his wife at the pitcher’s request.

First off, he left in the afternoon so the meeting is or has already taken place by now. Second, yet another meeting at CC’s request which is also a positive sign.

  34. Noone important says:

ok well we will deffinately know something by tommorrow morning

  35. UWS says:

I just have to say this: however this offseason turns out, these rumor threads have produced some of the funniest stuff I’ve ever read, either on RAB or elsewhere. You fine folks have made long working days bearable. So, kudos.

Now back to your scheduled snark.

  36. Noone important says:

10:57pm: Heyman says the Yankees’ topped the Braves offer for Burnett by a few million dollars. He says the Yanks apparently will attempt to sign all three top free agent starters – C.C. Sabathia, Derek Lowe, and Burnett

    • Ivan says:

      I seriously doubt that.

Pettitte is alot better investment than Lowe. Plus, if ATL goes 5 years on the contract, I think the yanks back out especially if they have CC locked up.

      • Mike Pop says:

Ill take CC, Burnett or Sheets, and Pettite.. Forget about Lowe. Burnett or Sheets is just a bonus. When they are healthy we will have the best rotation and while they are not Hughes steps in and we are still filthy

  37. Noone important says:

    that means no pettite?

  38. Michael says:

The Mets sign K-Rod. You how the Yankees love to steal the back page of the paper from the mets. Go get him Cash!!!

  39. 34hughes says:

oh no cash dont ruin the day by making dumb offers to burnett and lowe

  40. Ivan says:

While the movie “ATL” sucks, it’s worth watching if you wanna see Lauren London’s fine self. That’s a cutie.

  41. mo from the OC says:

According to Heyman, Yankees also have highest offers for Lowe and Burnett now. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html

I just hope Cashmen just comes back to vegas with CC signed. The Yanks will finally have that #1 front of the line starter that they so desperately need!
