Teixeira agrees to deal with Yanks

By Joseph Pawlikowski

As first reported by Jon Heyman and confirmed by Buster Olney, the Yankees are finalizing a deal with first baseman Mark Teixeira on an eight year deal worth $180 million. The deal reportedly includes a full no-trade clause. There is no word on a possible opt-out.

This comes in on the heels of a confusing morning in which many sources thought Teixeira would sign with Boston today. Some questionable sources even said that the two parties had an agreement in principle. That doesn’t appear to have been true, though.

Balls Deep says:

Damn right; they are spending the $$ they have… and will be able to put some of next year’s cap $$ back into the stadium and not in the hands of Marlins/Rays/Royals… let’s see what happens to them now.

Now it’s Pettitte or Lowe/Sheets

Brian Cashman: … so, I know I’m kind of rambling here, but I guess what I’m saying is, Yeah, that’s the offer, and we think you’d do yourself and your family a good service by exploring it before you make your decision. So, what do you think?
Mark Teixeira: Brian, you had me at “huge pile of money”.

I just want to say, for all the people excited about Swisher (and rightfully so). He’s now on the bench/platooning. Think about that

Joey H says:

Believe me, the tears are streaming………

Chip says:

If we got Tex, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Nady trade. I think if Cashman can get something back better than 2 draft picks, he’ll probably take it. Maybe the Braves are in it at the deadline and feel like giving up one of their outfielders? We can only dream……..

Zebidiah says:

Agree – Nady for one year @$6M can sell.

Ari says:

Seems like they have to look to trade somebody. They just have too many guys making too much money for too few outfield spots. I guess they could put Damon in center, and play Nady and Swisher at the corners, but it seems to make more sense to sell high on Nady, or try and get some return on either Damon or Matsui by eating some of the money on their contract. Things should get interesting now.

Matt says:

Or, you could put Swisher in right and have a Nady/Matsui DH platoon. I think that’s a much better move.

Stryker says:

get your ass on AIM.. NOW

He’s now on the bench/platooning. Think about that.

All of these scenarios are highly likely:
1) We deal Nady to somebody in need of an outfielder (Reds?) for some youngsters; the OF is Damon-Gardner-Swish
2) Matsui gets hurt or isn’t ready, and Damon moves to DH; the OF is Nady-Gardner-Swish
3) Swish impresses defensively in the spring, and the OF is Damon-Swish-Nady

Matt says:

I think 3 would be fine. I projected a lineup with Tex in my blog that had Damon in CF, Swisher in right, and Nady in left.

To quote myself:

“1. Damon CF
2. Jeter SS
3. Teixeira 1B
4. Rodriguez 3B
5. Posada C
6. Swisher RF
7. Matsui DH
8. Nady LF
9. Cano 2B

This configuration would score 5.689 runs per game, a total of 921. Again, that could out do any defensive problems with Damon in center and would compliment what could be a dominant pitching staff.”

Also, CHONE has Damon at -2 in CF for 2009 (Swisher projected for -3) and Swisher at +5 for the corner (Damon at +6) so I think an OF alignment of Nady (-5 corner)-Damon-Swisher would be alright—esp. with that lineup and pitching staff.

Mike Pop says:

How many runs will that lineup score ?

Mike Pop says:

Nevermind. Im so excited I didnt read the whole post.

Joey H says:

Those Chone Projections are awful. Go check what they gave Doc Halladay.

Matt says:

Those are absolute baseline projections. He could easily outperform his baseline projection. Click the “expanded” button for more information.

Matt says:

For the record, the offensive projections in my blog and above post are using Marcels projected OBP/SLG.

Mike Pop says:

If you could get a deal centered around a young pitcher with the potential to be a 2 or 3 I would do it. But I dont think the Reds would do that because they are more than just Nady away from contending.

Just posted on MLBTRADERUMORS:

Aside from the Red Sox, the Brewers and Blue Jays also lose here. Each team’s draft pick from the Yanks is pushed back one round – the Brewers get a second-rounder from them for C.C. Sabathia, the Jays get their third-round pick for A.J. Burnett.

Chris says:

Sounds like the same money the Sox were rumored to offer. Wonder what the difference maker was (assuming the contract length/$$$ rumors are correct)?

Full no-trade? Opt out? Both?

Wonder if this means they’ll still be interested in bringing Pettitte back?

Looking forward to them having a real all-around 1B for the first time since Tino’s prime.

emac2 says:

I wonder if the sox attitude after their meeting the other day led Tex to take a little less from the Yanks.

alright, guys seriously. Don’t be too spoiled, I think this is the end of free agents. No “now on to _______(Manny,Abreu,Pettite,Lowe)” Yankees cant afford any more free agents. MAYBE they can get Cameron for center but highly doubtful.

Joey H says:

Why rain on a parade?

DP says:

Also, who cares? Do we need anyone else? We have 6 OF/DH. We have an infield of A-Rod, Jeter, Cano, Teixeira, Posada. And we have one of the best rotations in baseball. At this point present day Whitey Ford could be our 5th starter.

Jonny not the Damon says:

Whitey Ford for 5th starter!

I’m totally on board.

Cashman is the tits baby! He just earned his HOF plaque. This offseason (besides the AJ money/length) has been masterful. The team is not only huge favorites this year, but should retain that title for the next 4-5 years minimum. CC and Tex? Both 28?

It’s totally high noon on my sun-dial if you know what I mean.

“It’s totally high noon on my sun-dial if you know what I mean.”

You think Pettitte might come back for cheaper now because he will want to win one more ?

Conan the Barack O'Brian says:

yeah, i can’t wait to see how he backpedals on this…he made his point weeks ago, and instead of just waiting it out, he belabored it by making it over and over again. sorry pete, the yanks will just maybe win a championship and you’ll have to write a (gasp) homage to Joe G. and his tactical capabilities. Of course, not before you write about how he’s on a big hook a thousand times.

Jeff says:

Haha I can’t wait for all the Red Sox fans to start bad mouthing the deal when they were on the verge of signing him. It’s hilarous…

Manimal says:

try living in MA. This is awesome. First the super bowl and now this.

Kayp says:

I think them and other yankees haters already started on MLBTR, check the comments on their.

Conan the Barack O'Brian says:

Just got a Christmas kitty for my kids. They will have to name her Teixeira, Sabathia, Cashwoman, something like that.

The mind reels…Teixeira, Cano, Jeter, A-Rod for an infield? HOLEE-SHITT.

I think Bobby A. wants in at this point for $1.

Manimal says:

I’m gonna miss Abreu, but Tex is a beast! We now have a good defensive first basemen! No more cringing when theres a play at the plate and a ground ball to Giambi.

“A”side from the Red Sox, the Brewers and Blue Jays also lose here. Each team’s draft pick from the Yanks is pushed back one round – the Brewers get a second-rounder from them for C.C. Sabathia, the Jays get their third-round pick for A.J. Burnett.

Joe says:

So much for a lower payroll? Thats what..another 30 million dollar check for taxes next year? Not to mention if we sign Andy again

TONY says:

I think that was a ploy – Cash played it perfectly.

emac2 says:

So, If Manny will sign a deal that only pays 13 mil the first year and we can trade Matsui, do we sign Manny now knowing that we will have the extra money to bump his salary next year when Damon comes off the book?

It’s only a 4th round pick….

World series in the first year of the park?

Kayp says:

I think damon comes off next yr or the one after that, same wit matsui.

Dimitri says:

Someone should go check and see if Peter Gammons still has a pulse. He might have had a massive heart attack about 30 minutes ago when this was announced.

TONY says:

Mark Teixeira a Yankee – It is a proud day to be a Portuguese American.

SmittDogg says:

We should really all write a giant thank you card to Cashman from his RAB supporters for this. And while we’re at it, another thank you card to the “brilliant young mind” of Theo Epstein who master negotiated his way right out of this one.

Kayp says:

I wouldnt mind signin it.

Ryan S. says:

This is going to go down in history as the greatest off season ever for the Yankees (or any other team) since the beginning of free agency.

Jay CT says:

I hate to say it, but that is not a very bold statement. The bold statement would be “this goes down as the worst off-season in baseball history.” I am all for the signing, I just don’t know how hard it is to say that they had a good offseason. Know what I mean?

Jamal G. says:

1. Johnny Damon – CF
2. Derek Jeter – SS
3. Mark Teixeira – 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez – 3B
5. Hideki Matsui – DH
6. Jorge Posada – C
7. Robinson Cano – 2B
8. Xavier Nady – RF
9. Nick Swisher – LF

American League, prepared to be fucked.

TONY says:

you wouldnt platoon the outfield – with gardner & melky as well?

Jamal G. says:

Nah, the Melky-Gardner platoon in center field does not offer as much defense over Johnny Damon that make up for the offensive gap. Overall, the Yanks are better off with Damon in center field, and Swisher in left field.

Mike Pop says:

Jamal dont forget
CC
AJ
Wang
Pettite
Joba/Hughes..

Life is Good !

TONY says:

This is going to be a fun season!!!

jsbrendog says:

you have to platoon gardner with dmaon in CF or damon will not make it to the allstar break. tremember it was not his defense that pushed him to LF but his body
’s inability to stay healthy covering that ground. he’s not 28 anymore. hell he’s not even 33 anymore

as for melky, he is gone baby gone good bye na na na na dont let the doo r hit you in the ass on the way out.

Chip says:

Between off-days for Tex, Matsui, Nady, Swisher and Damon’s days off, I doubt we see too much Damon in center. I mean you’d have these possibilities:

LF Damon
CF Gardner
RF Nady
1B Tex

LF Swisher
CF Gardner
RF Nady
1B Tex

LF Damon
CF Gardner
RF Swisher
1B Tex

LF Damon
CF Gardner
RF Nady
1B Swisher

that also doesn’t accound for the DH slot. This is a very flexible lineup right now so I’d imagine Gardner or Melky still gets 400+ ABs

jsbrendog says:

god i hope its gardner

Brooklyn Ed says:

=D

so im guessing either Melky or Brett will be the 4th OFer?

Jamal G. says:

Holy shit, the Yankees have three switch hitters (Teixeira, Posada and Swisher), three right-handed hitters (Jeter, ARod and Nady) and three left-handed hitters (Damon, Matsui and Cano). Sweet.

Manimal says:

7/9 have been allstars, Just Swish and Nady werent at one point.

SmittDogg says:

If it were just that line up with league average pitching they’d still win the division, but with the revamped rotation, the upside kids ready to jump in, and even a worst case bullpen with the hammer of god closing things out, they may be contending for records.

Jonny not the Damon says:

With that offense, I think we can afford to let Damon play center most days. Runs, runs, runs. And serious OF depth, too for when the old guys break down.

Manimal says:

seriously, Assists from the outfield is over rated. who said the ball gets in the outfield anyways :P

Jonny not the Damon says:

With Tex’s defense, we don’t even *NEED* an outfield. He’ll just spear everything with his mad hopping skills and mystical flexibility.

Mike Pop says:

Teix covers the outfield in some games. Angels Right Fielders took 3% of innings off last year after the acqusition.

Zach says:

So what now? Do we sign Manny still if we can?

If we also get manny, I would think this would have to be considered the deepest MLB team ever assembled on paper.

Ryan S. says:

Nope, need for ManRam anymore, and i was one of the guy’s biggest proponents on the board. But with Tex, its just not necessary. We’re already probably gonna end up with Swisher being a bench guy if we keep Damon in LF instead of CF.

Colombo says:

I would rather put swish in right and nady on the bench…or see if anyone will give us something with value for him…

The Evil Dynasty says:

I wanted Manny, but I am satisfied with Tex, in fact, I’m happier than i though i’d be.
But I don’t think we need another bat, unless we let go of 2 OFs

Mike Pop says:

Give me Pettitte and Im happy.

Jonny not the Damon says:

Stealing from the Sox? Obviously awesome.

Stealing from the Nats? Surprisingly satisfying, as well.

Joe says:

While i’m elated that he got him now, is he really worth 170?

Joe says:
Ryan S. says:

He is to us. A world series victory more than pays for Tex, CC, and AJ – not to mention A-Rod.

Jay CT says:

Well, if you think about it finacially, the Yankees have a worth of like 2 billion dollars. So if missing the playoffs knocked even 2% of their net worth, that is a 40 million dollar loss. So I would say its all worth it.

Jon G says:

SIIIIIIIICK!!!

There’s your protection for A-rod, with the gold glove D to boot (badly needed in our infield)!

Now that’s gotta assure they leave CF to Gardner/Melky/Damon until AJAX is ready. At worst, Gardner is our speedy bench threat, and at best he can be a solid 9 hitter with good D and a decent bat. Not even really thinking about Melky…

Moshe Mandel says:

Anyone want to figure out the payroll including 10 million for Pettitte?

Joseph P. says:

I’m going to update my table once the final figures come in for Teixeira.

Thomas says:

C – Posada S 13.1 6
1B – Teixeira S 22.5 (AAV) 3
2B – Cano L 9 8
SS – Jeter R 20 2
3B – Rodriguez R 32 4
RF – Nady R 6 7
CF – Damon L 13 1
LF – Swisher S 5.3 9
DH – Matsui L 13 5

Bench
1B – Miranda L .4
C – Molina R 2
IF – Ransom R .4
OF – Gardner L .4

SP Sabathia L 23
SP Wang R 5
SP Burnett R 16.5
SP Pettitte L 10
SP Chamberlain R .4

Bullpen
Cl Rivera R 15
Set Bruney R 1
Set Marte L 4
Set Veras R .4
Set Ramirez R .4
Set Albaladejo R .4
Rel Giese R .4

Other
Brackman .3
Igawa 4

I got $217.9 million assuming these values and not including others on the 40 man and any buyouts.

Mike Pop says:

Doesnt CC only gets 14 this ? Or Does the signing bonus count towards payroll?

MS says:

Great, I don’t care about money because it’s not mine and he fits perfectly for us. We sign Tex. and Boston doesn’t, plus we don’t have to sign Manny now. As great as he is, he is also an idiot.

Ryan S. says:

anybody smell that? Smells like putrid beans and moldy chowder … oh wait …

That’s the smell of the entirety of The RS Nation shitting itself.

maybe i like Tex 4th to protect A Rod… not sure.

Ryan S. says:

I say keep A-Rod in the 4 hole and bat Tex 3rd. I think that’s where they’ve both been for most of their recent careers.

Zebidiah says:

Arod is the best hitter and has more speed, so I’d put him 3rd

mike G. says:

just for the record i got everything i wanted for christmas and chanaukah

CC, Burnett, wang, petite, joba

AND

my favorite top of the line up
damon
jeter
tex
arod

wow. i should’ve asked santa for a pony!!
(p.s. petite will re-sign)

MattG says:

I keep reading/hearing Swisher is a bench guy now. He’s not. He’s better offensively than Nady, and he’s better defensively than Nady. After Gardner, he might be the best OF on the roster (if you trust UZR ratings anyway)

Ryan S. says:

I’ll agree its a battle between Nady and Swisher – I don’t want Damon in CF.

TONY says:

either way where good

Elston32 says:

Darn it! I was hoping for Manny DHing and Dunn in LF.

Kidding aside – thanks Brian!

deezer says:

how long before we see the gammons column explaining to us how righteous theo and the small-market sox got screwed by the evil agent and greedy player?

Jamal G. says:

Not for nothing, but lets look at the defense:

Catcher: Jorge Posada is a toss-up at this point, we’ll have to take a wait-and-see approach.
First Base: Teh awesome!11!!!1!
Second Base: When right, this guy is second only to Mark Ellis in terms of defense at second base in the American League.
Short Stop: Yeah, we know…
Third Base: Basically average.
Left Field: Slighty above average with Nick Swisher playing left field.
Center Field: Not an ideal choice if it’s Johnny Damon, but hey, if he produces alongside his 2007 levels, we’ll all shut the fuck up and be happy.
Right Field: As bout as average as you get with Xavier Nady in this spot.

I like it!

Ryan S. says:

In the context of our awesome lineup and pitching staff, it is TOTALLY acceptable. Its not going to cost us many games when the rest of the team is so fucking strong. Keep in mind we might do Damon in LF which would lead to above average play in both LF and CF.

MattG says:

I think Cano supposedly sucks. It may just be lack of effort.

jsbrendog says:

gardner or swisher will HAVE to take time from damon in cf because damon;’s body cant handle it full time. and he is NECESSARY to the top of this order.

Yankeegirl49 says:

Merry Christmas fellow Yankee fans!

I want to thank the good lord for making me a Yankee fan!!!

Gotta love the potential of what this team can do.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Mo move over. Cash is god.

Mike Pop says:

SmittDogg says:

Slow down. Think of what you’re saying.

Quatro Jones says:

Assuming Teix gets $20m for 2009, the payroll stands at 199 mil. If they sign Andy for $10m then theyre back to last years payroll but not over it.

Merry Teixmas to all and to all a good night!

Mike Pop says:

mike G. says:

LMFAO

merry texmas!!

you KNOW that’s going to be on front page of the post tomorrow!

Jay CT says:

That is taken off the Yankees website. He should at least give credit when stealing someones line.

Barry says:
Brooklyn Ed says:

or one of the corner OF.

Mike A. says:

Damon in CF, Nady in LF, Swish in RF?

Brooklyn Ed says:

that could work, unless Cashman is planning on to trade Nady since Swisher is more controllable. Hopefully by next week, everything will be more clear.

Barry says:

Yankees Org. has next week off thanks to Hal.

Mike Pop says:

Swish-CF, Nady-LF, Damon-RF and Matsui DH? Thats probably the best offensivce scenario but we take a hit on defense. Also Swish said he didnt like Center. But that lineup is the REAL DEAL

Thomas says:

I agree with this idea. I think they’ll use Gardner as late inning replacement and starting once or twice a week.

Barry says:

I can live with Damon in Center, but realistically how long can he play there before he starts breaking down.

Curramba says:

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smart move:)

Infamous says:

I’m curious of how this went down.

You think Tex pulled a Beltran and approached the Yankees or do you think we were pursuing him the whole time?

Mike Pop says:

Hal said we cant let him go there and wrote the check

Chip says:

Cashman: How much do you want?
Boras: How much will you give us?
Cashman: 8/170
Boras: I need a new car
Cashman: Fine, 8/180
Boras: Done

Mike Pop says:

Lol a 10 million dollar car!

headstand says:

Or whatever his commission on 10 million is.

robo says:

i hope there is one more move coming…like matsui to the mariners or something. because i dont want damon in cf. and this is assuming posada can even catch everyday.

right now the lineup is something like:

cf damon
ss jeter
1b tex
3b arod
c posada
dh matsui
rf nady
2b cano
lf swisher

Zebidiah says:

I’d flip ARod and Teix, and Matty and George. Any way we do it it’s potent.

Jeff says:

I can’t see them standing pat with the money on the table. i wonder if there’s been some rumbling with other GMs to trade someone…

Ryan S. says:

Even if they don’t have any plans right now, they have all of the 2009 portion of the offseason to move some moves if need be

Brett says:

what a great offseason

John NY says:

Great report from Madden:

Bill Madden says Teixeira told the Yankees he preferred them all along, after the Angels and Red Sox backed off. Ha….RED SUX Nation !

Dodo says:

Good news, lame post.

Mike Pop says:

Honestly I think your gonna see this help Cano’s discipline at the plate. The Angel’s hitting coach said that he helped Aybar and some of the other young kids in LA when he was there.

Colombo says:

cashman is teh suxor!!1!!!1!

we should trade matsui for lincecum now, bc everyone knows the giants need a bat in left field!!1!!!

in all seriousness though, brian cashman is my new santa claus, bc he got me everything i wanted for christmas, and he even delivered it all early…

Kayp says:

Hmmm Lincecum for matsui is not gonna happen. Assumin you were being sarcastic.

E-ROC says:

Bill Madden says Teixeira told the Yankees he preferred them all along, after the Angels and Red Sox backed off. Ha.

MLBTR

Mike Pop says:

Bill MAdden says Teix told Cash he wanted to come here. Fact or fiction ?

Phil McCracken says:

I can’t stand Cashman, but I have to give him credit.

He went after the ace we needed this off season in Sabathia.

And he fixed the offense by putting another big bat in the lineup to replace Abreu/Giambi.

You’ve had some bad off seasons Cash, but this one I give you high marks for.

Jeff says:

You cant trade Matsui for lincecum… That will never happen. I’m talking realistic..

Colombo says:

Jeff says:

how do signing bonuses work in MLB? Are they like the NFL and prorated over the life of the contract?

Lancer says:

Haha! so much for my bud telling me about the source quoted on WEEI… they had it all wrong!

I still can’t believe this just happened…. WOW!!!!

Mike Pop says:

Lol, Stephen A Smith is saying Yanks NEED to sign Manny on “The Hot List”. Hes like you didnt halfstep with these 3 and you cant with Manny either.

RustyJohn says:

Damn, for some reason I didn’t check RAB or MLB Trade rumors this morning- just found out about this and I am so giddy I have an erection and am cancelling all client calls while I dance like a little bitch.

The Evil Dynasty says:

Stephen A. Smith says “If you spent 400M, what’s wrong with another 90″ He says we already broke the bank and should go after Manny as well.
Lets vote: Go for Manny?
Yes
No

Mine – Yes

Mike Pop says:

I cant say yes to that.

Colombo says:

manny would be icing on the already lavishly, excessively iced cake…if we really want to piss off the rest of the league, we’ll do it, but this is a world champion caliber team right now…

Thomas says:

No, he just isn’t needed anymore.

Ryan S. says:

I can’t wait to hear all the bullshit spewed by The Red Sox about what a dumb move this was. The Yankee hatred this year is going to be enormous, I am really looking forward to it.

Mike Pop says:

Like CRAZY hatred, ridiculous hatred

ceciguante says:

the best kind of red sox sentiment:

irrational, hypocritical hatred.

eat it, boston.

Ryan S. says:

Yes, ridiculous. I can’t wait for the venom to spew forth.

Thomas says:

The best part is they can’t even make the cancer argument, like they would if we got Manny. I bet we’ll see a lot of Teixeira was a luxury and we really never needed/wanted him or we were just in it to drive up the price, type bullshit.

Ryan S. says:

I dunno … every Red Sox fan out there was salivating for him when it seemed like a deal was imminent. They got teased so much, even after that, with claims they were the front runners. I’d say 99% of the fan base is pissed off or very depressed right now. But hey! They have Pedroia for 6 more years, yay for them!

Thomas says:

What I wrote is what Sox fans will tell Yankees fans, of course they’ll actually be pissed. Sox fans will go from “TEX IS TEH BESTEST1!!1″ to “WE NEVERN NEED;D HIM; TEX AINT THAT GOODO!!12!”

Bogie says:

I just thank the good Lord that the Steinbrenners didn’t invest their cash with Bernie Madoff!

Mike Pop says:

Sherman says in his article we are going to move somebody.

Ryan S. says:

“They played a great game of chess”

- Buster Olney

Wow. We’re actually getting props from Buster Olney … that is really fucking hard to do.

RustyJohn says:

This wasn’t chess- this was Cashman walking up to Theo, punching him the balls and then fucking Theo’s gf right in front of him.

Jamal G. says:
Jay CT says:

THAT was a classic post!

Ryan S. says:

and all of it televised live to millions of people across the world.

Barry says:
jsbrendog says:

you forgot “and awesome”

Jamal G. says:

Heh, Steve Berthiamue is PMS’ing all over the ESPN News stage; what a little bitch that guy is.

Mike Pop says:

Brian Cashman says:

Hal and I are planning to tell Hank all about this after Christmas, so expect his reaction sometime around New Years.

And thanks to you who suggested Whitey Ford to be the 5th starter, I’ve engaged in preliminary talks with him and he seems very open to a shorter deal with a higher AAV because of the Tex signing.

I’m thinking 3/90 or so. Hal really hit bank at the Winter Meetings.

E-ROC says:

Joel Sherman thinks the Yanks will trade one of the outfielders

Jamal G. says:

Joel Sherman thinks…

Nooo… NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Bobby G says:

I think I orgasmed when i heard this!!!!!

Jeff says:

Sherman says the yankees will now try to move one of Damon, Matsui, Nady, or Swisher…

RustyJohn says:

One would think Matsui- they need a lead off hitter, Swisher gives them fleixibility and is low cost and nady can play the outfield unlike Matsui.

RustyJohn says:

plus, find someone to take matsui and tex only costs less than 10 million this year

John NY says:

Who wants a guy with two bad knees who can’t play the OF

Mike Pop says:

Everyone ! Na but maybe the Rangers, A’s, Rays, Twins?

RustyJohn says:

A guy with one year left on his K, who can hit .300, 25 homers and 100 rbi and who will likely have a portion of his contract eaten by the Yanks?

Old Ranger says:

Matsui is going to stay, the guy hits lefty’s/rights as well and is a very good (so called) clutch hitter. They may trade Johnny or Nady even Melky, Jeter and Brett can lead off. Don’t get your shorts in a bunch, Brett has been lead-off hitter most of his life.

Jeff says:

so i guess this now means Montero will be the future catcher

Thomas says:

Montero is at least 3 years away, his position placement and future performance are not a priority or sure thing. A lot could happen, such as he could end up failing as a hitter (God forbid).

Mike Pop says:

I hope we dont trade Swisher. X or Matsui

C.Panella says:

Then who will lead off please of the 4 damon is the one it would hurt the most to trade trade X or matsui not damon no way!
