Teixeira agrees to deal with Yanks
ByAs first reported by Jon Heyman and confirmed by Buster Olney, the Yankees are finalizing a deal with first baseman Mark Teixeira on an eight year deal worth $180 million. The deal reportedly includes a full no-trade clause. There is no word on a possible opt-out.
This comes in on the heels of a confusing morning in which many sources thought Teixeira would sign with Boston today. Some questionable sources even said that the two parties had an agreement in principle. That doesn’t appear to have been true, though.

Seems like they have to look to trade somebody. They just have too many guys making too much money for too few outfield spots. I guess they could put Damon in center, and play Nady and Swisher at the corners, but it seems to make more sense to sell high on Nady, or try and get some return on either Damon or Matsui by eating some of the money on their contract. Things should get interesting now.
Or, you could put Swisher in right and have a Nady/Matsui DH platoon. I think that’s a much better move.

1) We deal Nady to somebody in need of an outfielder (Reds?) for some youngsters; the OF is Damon-Gardner-Swish
2) Matsui gets hurt or isn’t ready, and Damon moves to DH; the OF is Nady-Gardner-Swish
3) Swish impresses defensively in the spring, and the OF is Damon-Swish-Nady
I think 3 would be fine. I projected a lineup with Tex in my blog that had Damon in CF, Swisher in right, and Nady in left.
To quote myself:

Also, CHONE has Damon at -2 in CF for 2009 (Swisher projected for -3) and Swisher at +5 for the corner (Damon at +6) so I think an OF alignment of Nady (-5 corner)-Damon-Swisher would be alright—esp. with that lineup and pitching staff.

Those are absolute baseline projections. He could easily outperform his baseline projection. Click the “expanded” button for more information.
For the record, the offensive projections in my blog and above post are using Marcels projected OBP/SLG.
If you could get a deal centered around a young pitcher with the potential to be a 2 or 3 I would do it. But I dont think the Reds would do that because they are more than just Nady away from contending.

Nah, the Melky-Gardner platoon in center field does not offer as much defense over Johnny Damon that make up for the offensive gap. Overall, the Yanks are better off with Damon in center field, and Swisher in left field.

Holy shit, the Yankees have three switch hitters (Teixeira, Posada and Swisher), three right-handed hitters (Jeter, ARod and Nady) and three left-handed hitters (Damon, Matsui and Cano). Sweet.
7/9 have been allstars, Just Swish and Nady werent at one point.

If it were just that line up with league average pitching they’d still win the division, but with the revamped rotation, the upside kids ready to jump in, and even a worst case bullpen with the hammer of god closing things out, they may be contending for records.
With that offense, I think we can afford to let Damon play center most days. Runs, runs, runs. And serious OF depth, too for when the old guys break down.

I keep reading/hearing Swisher is a bench guy now. He’s not. He’s better offensively than Nady, and he’s better defensively than Nady. After Gardner, he might be the best OF on the roster (if you trust UZR ratings anyway)

Catcher: Jorge Posada is a toss-up at this point, we’ll have to take a wait-and-see approach.
First Base: Teh awesome!11!!!1!
Second Base: When right, this guy is second only to Mark Ellis in terms of defense at second base in the American League.
Short Stop: Yeah, we know…
Third Base: Basically average.
Left Field: Slighty above average with Nick Swisher playing left field.
Center Field: Not an ideal choice if it’s Johnny Damon, but hey, if he produces alongside his 2007 levels, we’ll all shut the fuck up and be happy.
Right Field: As bout as average as you get with Xavier Nady in this spot.

In the context of our awesome lineup and pitching staff, it is TOTALLY acceptable. Its not going to cost us many games when the rest of the team is so fucking strong. Keep in mind we might do Damon in LF which would lead to above average play in both LF and CF.

gardner or swisher will HAVE to take time from damon in cf because damon;’s body cant handle it full time. and he is NECESSARY to the top of this order.

Matsui is going to stay, the guy hits lefty’s/rights as well and is a very good (so called) clutch hitter. They may trade Johnny or Nady even Melky, Jeter and Brett can lead off. Don’t get your shorts in a bunch, Brett has been lead-off hitter most of his life.

Montero is at least 3 years away, his position placement and future performance are not a priority or sure thing. A lot could happen, such as he could end up failing as a hitter (God forbid).
