Marte placed on DL with a sore shoulder

By Mike Axisa

Well that explains it. The Yanks have placed lefty reliever Damaso Marte on the DL with a bum shoulder, according to PeteAbe’s 10:23 & 10:59am updates. Marte came back from the WBC with a sore shoulder, but he says this latest ailment occurred when the team was in Boston. No word yet on how long he’ll be out; Anthony Claggett has been called up to take his spot on the roster.

yankees=warriors says:

Why not call up Jackson (Steven)?

3 innings last night. i bet he gets called up later in the week.

yankees=warriors says:

Thanks, can’t believe I missed that.

V says:

At least there’s legit explanation as to why he wasn’t used.

I still don’t get why teams are so averse to using the DL – the Indians, at least, put Hafner on as SOON as there was a hint of a problem

Matt ACTY says:

Being hurt = lack of grit = sign of weakness.

Well, this should really put the whole “joe is clueless with the pen” thing to bed. 7 relievers have between 7 and 11 appearances, with Marte being at the low end with 7. The only weird thing was not using Marte this week, and now we know why.

andrew says:

Oh well. Hopefully he rights that ship and hurries back. We kinda sorta need him. Throwing all this shit at the wall and hoping some of it sticks isn’t exactly working as well as when we drew it up in the playbook.

Corey Nord-Podberesky says:

“Anthony Claggett was been called up”

They can’t call up Jackson cos it hasn’t been 10 days since he was sent down.

You know, I wish, when players were hurt bad enough to not be able to do their job, they’d say so…

They could have called up Jackson since it was an injury, but he threw three innings yesterday.

Oh wait. Nevermind. I’m an idiot.

Steve H says:

But relievers don’t get hurt. That’s what the B-jobbers want us to believe. And of course, Brandon Morrow, former starter converted to the pen (stupidly) just hit the DL as well.

Matt ACTY says:

FWIW, I think Morrow said he wanted to be in the ‘pen.

Steve H says:

And Ramiro Pena probably wants to be a #3 hitter. They should do what’s best for the team.

Matt ACTY says:

They are. Sending guys to the ‘pen fixes all your team’s problems.

Steve H says:

isn’t he on the DL, anyway?

V says:

Morrow also has diabetes, and has difficulty staying ‘up’ all game.

Matt ACTY says:

Really? I did not know that.

Doug says:

The DIABEETUS makes him uncomfortable with pitching deep into games, I’ve read.

teixeira is the man says:

time to release veras. he sucks more ass than an enema.

Eric says:

ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

While Veras has been far from good this season, how exactly does it help the team to release one reliever (Veras) when another one (Marte) goes to the DL?

Eric says:

Why not bring up a bat for pinch hitting purposes…that seems more logical than bringing up Clagget (he’s a bum anyway)

Pretty quick to call him a bum, after one bad appearance. In 1995, a Yankee pitcher made his debut, and allowed 8 hits, 3 walks, a homer, and 5 earned runs in 3.1 innings. His name? Mariano Rivera. Claggett’s no Rivera, but lets try to maintain perspective- he got rocked in his MLB debut.

Eric says:

if you like throwing crap shoots out to the mound that’s all well and dandy, however, we haven’t needed a 13th reliever for over a week and over that same period, there’s plenty of times a pinch hitter would’ve been useful

Matt ACTY says:

Just curious: who would you have called up to PH?

Eric says:
cult of basebaal says:

you mean the guy with the swine flu?

zs190 says:

Isn’t Miranda sick anyways? He got taken out of AAA game because he is feeling ill I thought, make no sense at all to call him up.

Reggie C. says:

The Bruney and Marte injuries only magnify Cash’s mistake of not signing Juan Cruz. Some of those Veras and Albaladejo blowups could’ve been mitigated with the Cruz addition.

Accent Shallow says:

I’m going to strongly disagree with this. Cruz comes with his own set of issues.

Andrew says:

RAB must feel pretty silly right about now.

Why on earth would RAB feel silly?

Jamal G. says:

Because of Mike’s post last night about Girardi’s reluctance to go to Marte. However, looking at the information that was available to Mike at the time, I don’t see why he – or anyone – should feel “silly” about wondering why the fuck Marte has been a no-show.

Tony says:

Because we’re supposed to mindlessly agree with everything the organization, manager and players do, except when we’ve all agreed not to. It’s a little complicated, but if everyone pays attention it’s fine.

Doug says:

Blogs have feelings too, you know.

Not RAB, we have a plugin for that.

Hey, so semi-on-topic about hurt players:

There’s no Peña or Swisher in today’s line up. I get Swisher’s elbow might still be bothering him =(, but I don’t remember seeing Peña get hurt yesterday…

Nady Nation says:

Only explanation I can think of is a lefty on the mound.

He’s a switch hitter.

Nady Nation says:

Did not know that. I have no explanation then. Berroa is a butcher at third.

Matt ACTY says:

But Pena switch hits.

Then again, he’s only had 2 PAs vs. lefties this season–one strikeout, one walk.

According to Girardi’s press conference they’re sitting Peña against the lefty.

ARX says:

So…A-Rod, Bruney, Marte, Nady, Ransom, plus Wang’s meltdown, Swisher’s elbow (hope that heals fast…) and Teixeira’s wrist, did I miss anyone? :/ Plus CC’s mediocrity and the pen being awful? Thank God for 13-11.

Having said that, PLEASE lets take 3 of 4 from the Angels, for once? ;)

I’m with you. How the hell are we over .500?!

Matt ACTY says:

Luck. But on the bright side, we’re only two games above our pythag. record so it’s not like we’re getting cray, super, ridiculous luck.

The blowouts skew that pythag, at least right now. It should even out over the course of the season.

Matt ACTY says:

Like the 2008 Angels who were what? 12 games over theirs?

El Generalissimo says:

This team has a different feel then in the past. Our “bad” hitters actually hit, there is just something different… as many have said if the pitching and hitting ever click at the same time we could rip off some long win streaks .

Agree. Much better vibe about this years team when compared to last year. probably has to do with knowing CC and AJ are likely to pitch like the back of their baseball card at some point and we should take off at that point.

cult of basebaal says:

I have a feeling they might not get this one in … looks like the 1st break in the rain is somewhere in West Virginia right now …

I can’t see how they play which is frustraiting because the weather’s supposed to be like this all week.

I don’t know what to do with myself with no baseball!

ARX says:

How is it in the Bronx at the moment? Its not too bad in Brooklyn, maybe the rain will be light/intermittent and they can get in at least 5?

r.w.g. says:

Right after you guys made that whole post about what a terrible job Girardi was doing with the bullpen… despite having a track record of bullpen success with two different franchises over two major league seasons.

Aren’t you guys always prattling on about sample size? Right.

ARX says:

Just because a sample size is small doesnt mean you can’t make note of it. If someone screws up, it maybe be one or two out of 5000 but theyre still screw ups and you have the right to point them out. And w/o knowing Marte’s been hurt, Girardi’s move were head-scratchers at best.

His only real headscratcher was using Veras twice this weekend without using Marte once. You can certainly point that out. Making the leap from there to “Girardi sucks at bullpen management” is what people took issue with.

yankees=warriors says:

The fact that he’s been taking the starters out too late still supports that opinion, though.

With the way the ‘pen has been pitching, I would much rather see the starters try to get those outs than the bullpen. CC Sabathia has shown no trouble in those situations in his career in the past.

E-ROC says:

That sucks. Hopefully, the injury isn’t lingering through the rest of the season. I guess Mark Melancon and Phil Coke will probably be the main “bridge” to Mo.

Accent Shallow says:

I think Melancon will definitely get more chances to prove himself, but I doubt he’s at the top of the list after the Matthews triple.

Brooklyn Ed says:

he made one bad pitch. a rookie mistake.

GG says:

I’m not in NY…Is this game going to be played today?

Matt ACTY says:

Petey Abe said the start will most likely be delayed.

Ok, I know i was blabbin about this yesterday but…
I found another pitcher who had comparable minor league numbers to hughes

clay bucholz

H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
6.6 0.6 2.5 10.9 4.39

vs

hughes

H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
6.0 0.2 2.2 10.1 4.52

vs
Beckett
H/9 HR/9 BB/9 SO/9 SO/BB
5.9 0.5 2.1 12.3 5.78

While clay is 2 years old his numbers are very similar. Beckett looks like he owns him with the K’s but Beckett never pitched in AAA so his stats are only at the lower level of the minors.

Looking for more pitchers with similar numbers trying to throw some graphs up, anyone got anything?
Sorry if this is getting annoying but I keep wasting precious studying time searching through tones of minor league numbers and i m finding very litte!

whozat says:

I’m just not sure why I’m supposed to care…are you trying to convince me that Hughes will be good? Because I already believe that…

whozat says:

and here I’m using “me” as a proxy for “the average RAB reader”

na i m trying to compile data on those who have performed similarly to phil hughes. I m trying to see how good and i want to follow his trends a certain way. Just wondering if anyone has better memory than me thats all. I m sure there are plenty of guys who dominated in the minors and sucked it on the big league level just wonder who is all lol

Drew says:

Why not call up a damn position player? This is getting ridiculous with the relievers.

nick blasioli says:

is that all they can do…call up a. clagget…i think he sucks…well, he sure did that last time up, and he did in spring training also…i just dont get it…

Yeah, he was awful in the spring- 8 innings and 3 hits…and one run. Awful!!!

rsam says:

claggett is terrible why dont we call up igawa instead let he earn is 4 million per year.
