Yankees add five to 40-man roster

With the deadline to set the 40-man roster for next month’s Rule 5 Draft looming, the Yankees added RHP David Phelps, RHP D.J. Mitchell, OF Zoilo Almonte, IF Corban Joseph, and IF David Adams to the 40-man roster today. The first three guys are not surprising at all, as I explained yesterday.

Joseph, drafted out of high school in 2008, was eligible for this year’s Rule 5 Draft because he graduated at 19 years old, so he had to protected one year earlier than usual. Adams is somewhat surprising to me; he’s missed the majority of the last two seasons following a brutal ankle injury suffered last May. He’s played in just 29 games since, so the Yankees must feel pretty good about his health if they protected him.

There’s only spot on the 40-man roster left open now, so some guys will get the axe as the Yankees add players this offseason. Kevin Whelan is probably first in line to go, and something will have to give with the out-of-options trio of Greg Golson, Justin Maxwell, and Chris Dickerson.

Interesting choice of Adams on the 40 man. At least its not Reegie Corona all over again. Seriously what did that guy have on the upper management?

Mike – Will you be live blogging the Rule 5 draft like last year?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yes, and it will be most uninteresting hour in the history of the internet. Again.

      • Adam

I vaguely remember a good amount of excitement the year that Jamie Hoffman was selected. Which perhaps also sums up the potential excitement of the Rule 5 draft.

    keep Dickerson.

Maxwell and Golston can take a hike.

Keep Maxwell. I like his upside when healthy. I’d take that chance given what Dickerson and Golson offer.

Is there some sort of code at work, or did he sit on his iPhone?

      I’ll guess the latter.

    • Genghis

Oh no, Peter must have had a stroke!

    • RetroRob

Does Peter Gammons even have a Twitter account? I do remember there was a FakePeterGammons account which was kind of funny. I opened a Twitter account a year ago, and fled after a month. It was the home for pointless comments and narcissistic behavior. Wait, of course Peter Gammons has an account!

Pedro Feleciano will be out for almost all year, can the Yankees just DFA to clear a 40 man roster spot?

  • David

Considering how long Adams and been out with the injury, does anyone think the Mariners were right to balk on him as part of the Montero deal and ask for someone else?

    • Thomas Cassidy

They asked for Nunez instead. Yankees said no, Lee went to Texas.

    • RetroRob

They balked at Adams because they didn’t like what they saw in the medicals, believing his injury was more severe than reported. All things considered, they turned out to be right. Yet I believe they will still regret not taking Montero and Adams and instread going for Smoak.
